I'm a recent fan of Vivian's. I've been shooting since I was a boy, 50 years ago, and no where near her ability. But I learn best by seeing others' work and her's is some of the best.
Hi ! I happen to have the very same camera bought in 53 and still have it in a-1 shape...I hopde you mond mind what I want to stress here. Problbly many “amateurs” who bought these cameras carefully used the eveready case and shot thei photos asyou show...at waist level. Well this can be ok and even great in some instances but far from the best ! Next you and many others areall omitting to mention the the viewing/magnifier lens situateed right under the small opening at the back of the viewfinder when it’s open. (Same lens as the one on top) Well it seems to me that many people must think it’s there like a car having a spare tiree in the trunk !!! that unique feature from Rolleiflex deserves a lot of attention AND praise. most action photographers shot their photos ( of movie stars, public figures et...) making use of the “open direct viewfinder” and guess what...they used the rear magnifier lens (which is shaded) to ACCURATELY FOCUS ON THEIR SUBJECT in less that 2 seconds. viewing-focusing and back to viewing in 3 seconds !!! Trust me, I used my Rollei for weddings, sports etc until I then switched to the 6006 mostly because of the ease to reload, interchangeable lenses and more. But never lost my love for the TLR model. I stopped shooting 2 years ago at 92 ! Now many will say..”yes bu the open finder’ is like going back to the dark ages..how can it give accurate framing ? Well, it does not...but for these types of shot your biggest concern is getting your subject “somewhere” in the middle of your negative. You will correct the framing in printing. Also this open frame finder shows less than you will get (for safety). You will have to practice..yes...but you’l learn quickly. Please don’t call your “close-up lenses” filters....they are not. They are “close-up LENSES” the top one is made to correct for parallax. Parallax correction protects you from cutting heads etc but never forget that, at “close range” what you see is still not what you get ( that is not 100% ) Just like your left eye does not see “exactly” what the othe one does. (check it out !) This is not important most of time, but you should learn to look for that as it can be very important under certain circumstances (in relation to what’s in your background and the distance to it etc..) I hope this can help you enjoy your Rolleiflex at its best.
I liked the pace and content of this. The self-portraits give us a sense of what her presence was like as she walked the streets. People had a different (or rather 'indifferent') awareness and relationship to cameras then we do today. We've evolved (for better or for worse) into self-consciousness, as opposed as being engaged in life as they were then.
Nice review of both camera and artist. Having used a Rolleiflex 2.8F to photograph on the streets of New York myself, you described the process quite well.
I want to compliment an excellent video. Your topic was the Rolleiflex medium format camera and how the extremely talented Ms Maier might have used it. In a calm thought way, you described as an artist tool. Thank you...
shes holding a 3.5B EVS i guess, looks like the one that vivian is using but with lenshood, this model use tessar or xenar (the one in the video looks like a tessar)
Mine is an occupation 3.5 camera. Rolleiflex built cameras for american GI's while Germany was building Messerschmidts and shooting FLAK. It is an utterly comfortable camera to use.
HI ! Oh my god what I write gets changed (behind my back) by the stupid auto correction !!! I wrote “ please I hope you won’t mind” and see what it does with it !!!!!
I have this camera and always struggle with not having higher shutter speeds. I love shooting outdoor portraits but am forced to stop down to f11 or smaller. Great camera otherwise.
The title of this video is ‘Vivian Maier’s Rolleiflex Camera’. A deceptive title suggesting that the camera in the video was used by Vivian. Clip bait titles detract from quality of a video. 👎
I have come to believe that women have a great advantage in street photography, as they appear less threatening than men. Also, people are more willing to act hostile to men.
Getting tired of all these misleading titles, it’s not Vivian’s camera at all. Why not just be truthful and say Rolliflex the camera Vivian Maier used.
Your statements on 0:56 are incorrect and should be redacted and corrected. The word ''reflex'' refers to the mirror used behind the viewing lens that redirects the image-forming light onto a focusing screen. Do you research and do not talk about subjects you have no good understanding about.
Its not Roll"ee"flex, its Roll"ei" flex!!! Your pronunciation is very annoying. And the negative is not "about" 6cm by 6cm, it is precisely 6cm by 6cm. That's why its called medium-format.
Well this is awkward, it’s not called medium format solely because of 6x6 lmao, it’s called medium format because it’s bigger than 35mm and smaller than large format hence the name “medium” otherwise what would 6x7 be called? Medium large? Secondly it is “about” 6x6. The 6x6 cm was a conversion from inch to cm. Most of these cameras actually took pictures that were 5.6x6 cm, not precisely 6x6. Maybe educate yourself before blasting someone? Just a suggestion
Put the camera on a tripod, please ! Switch on the light, please ! Get a background, please ! I think you what to be the star of this review. So, good luck. What is normal? There has been 220 film; 24 exp. Do you homewerk better !
I love my Rolleiflex ! A true pleasure to use over the years.
I'm a recent fan of Vivian's. I've been shooting since I was a boy, 50 years ago, and no where near her ability. But I learn best by seeing others' work and her's is some of the best.
Wonderful introduction to the Rolleiflex TLR and Vivian's approach. I own a 1952 model and love using it. It is so different from a digital camera!
Thanks for trailing ;-)
Excellent video. Best insight I've seen (or read) into how Vivian worked. Thanks for sharing.
Great video I use my 1937 Rolleiflex 3.5 for street photography
I have an old Rollei from the late 40's or 50's. It's a 3.5 and quite dinged and scratched. The lenses are good and it still shoots great.
I have this same 3.5f rollieflex. Such a beautiful camera

Big thanks to you! Very informative about how Vivian took photos with the Rollieflex camera
Nicely presented! The Rolleiflex is my favorite 6x6 and a camera I enjoy using often. I've been a fan of Vivian since her work was first discovered.
I love my Rolleiflex 2.8F! The reverse viewfinder was a bit tricky at first but practice makes perfect.
I liked the pace and content of this.

Thanks for vid. Just became aware of Vivian Maier.
I love the sound of your voice.
Nice review of both camera and artist. Having used a Rolleiflex 2.8F to photograph on the streets of New York myself, you described the process quite well.
"Reflex" refers to the mirror housing and the way that the image is viewed. It doesn't have anything to do with the film advance.
The mechanism for advancing the film is referred to in the model designation Automat.
Very well done! Thanks.
Great video and introduction to Vivian and her camera, Jenny. We saw the show just before the lockdown and thought it was excellent.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank u for the great video
Great artist ❤️
Amazing 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻

Thank you...
I'm still bitter about not getting to see this. First I heard that she was in Calgary before.
great. thank you for sharing :)
Great !
What lenses were in the Vivian Maier's Rolleiflex cameras? Planar, Xenotar, Tessar or Xenar?
shes holding a 3.5B EVS i guess, looks like the one that vivian is using but with lenshood, this model use tessar or xenar (the one in the video looks like a tessar)

Is this the automat 3.5f ?
Looks like a first model mx evs to me.
Good review. However, contrary to the comment that changing film isn’t easy, it’s not at all difficult. Thread in the film properly, close the back.
Is 35mm?
No it is 120
I thought she went to South America once, also (?)

I agree, quite tired of it actually, I think their videos should be automatically pulled if the title is misleading, like this one.
I have come to believe that women have a great advantage in street photography, as they appear less threatening than men. Also, people are more willing to act hostile to men.
PHOTOGRAPHY LESSON ASMR
I don't think the word "reflex" has anything to do with the winding method. It means it uses a mirror to throw the image onto the focussing screen.
Art is for everyone lol can't even buy a print of hers if you don't have hundreds if not thousands of dollars....
How rich you need to be, to shoot 100.000 negatives today... 😅😂
Request for fine tuning the volume please, otherwise a very informative video
Getting tired of all these misleading titles, it’s not Vivian’s camera at all. Why not just be truthful and say Rolliflex the camera Vivian Maier used.
She wasn’t short of money… did you see the hoard of unprocessed film John had to sort. She spent huge amounts of cash on film.
Fala mais alto!!!

@@reecewynne2863 Dumbest American answer. I live in the town where Rolleiflex was made, so go back to your pick up truck and haul okra.
@@NorceCodine loooool, I never argued your pronunciation of rolleiflex just that they don’t actually record 6x6. And guess what? I’m not American lol
@@NorceCodine haha you’re from Braunschweig? I used to live quite close to you. Near Hanover. Don’t make assumptions or you just sound dumb
