Wanted to ask a question. Say you buy a new reel and turn it fast just to test it's smoothness. It is smooth but makes a soft winding sound only when you turn it fast.... Is that normal?
Fair assessment....and still get it, I am a Daiwa fan boy😂. I think they should definitely make servicing these reels more accessible to the home service man. Tools, mag lube and mag bearings. Magseal has been on the market long enough. Shot you an email as well
I hooked a 4kg fish with a brand new $70.00 real which i purchased from my local tackle shop. The main gear failed and i lost the fish a couple of feet from the shore. That is why i watch your reviews cost i need to know i am not wasting my money when purchasing a new real. i have two Daiwa ballistics very happy with them. i can even service them myself cos of these vids. Thanks very much for this review keep them coming.
Just buy a Fin Nor Offshore and you know you have something, body all alu with all gear stainless steel, the 6,4 mm axle supported in 3 points, front middle and rear for real effort, no compromise as alu, coated alu or zinc, even the handle, there's no schiki miki reverse switch and no one way ball bearings but the solid clutch anti reverse. It is heavy but strong, built to hold any fish and to last forever, you can't have both, whether strenght and endurance or lightness, the lighter it is, the less substance/atoms in it... I just brought a Fin Nor Offshore 10500, when you hold it in your hand and hear its clicking while turning the spool you know that's the thing a man wants. An endurance test would be interesting, alu gear, coated even, vs brass and stainless steel gears, so those Daiwa and Shimano vs Fin Nor and other stainless steel and brass gear reels.
Use the drag and rod to pull line in then then pick up line as you slack the line. Any gear will fail if improperly used. Don't grind through it, especially with spinning reels.
There's a sweet spot for durability and reliability when it comes to reels. The lower end of the mid price point will catch you plenty of fish, and the higher end of the mid price point will potentially catch you many more (without issue.) If you don't have the budget for premium gear but do have the budget for the midrange stuff, there a lot of fish to catch and a lot of fun to be had.... depending on what you target and how much you fish, there is a lot of fun to be had at the mid range price point.... beyond that point you're paying a lot of money for negligible benefits depending on what you target and how often you fish.
I'm nowhere near saltwater, never had to worry about any of the things you talk about in your tear downs, reviews, and what not but I do love your explanations, the detail and depth, and overall fairness. It always enthralls me to the point where I will sit and watch almost 2hrs straight about reels that I have no need for or any intention of ever needing or buying. Great work as always!
Been running this reel for a year and had it torn down. Seal at handle is perfectly fine. Btw. All salt water kayak and beach surf fishing. 2500 is absolutely a perfectly weighted and powerful gem. Maybe a little high in price but Shimano has jacked their prices up big time. This new BG MQ is a Ms nice or I would say nicer than my Stradic FL. My new go to inshore saltwater reel. Like my Ballistic for inshore as well.
Good point about the line roller bearing BTW. . Bushings are proven in the line roller. The Stradic is well known for their line rolling bearing wearing out very quickly. Mine were done after 4 trips.
I'll never own a spinning reel above a 3000 series, as a bass fisherman, but you're videos give so much information, I can't get enough. Just wish the frequency was more often.
I am impressed! :) not by this BG MQ but by the video. Watched it completely. Timestamps can be really useful looking back one day. Really good comparison to similar reels. Great video and many thanks for your time and effort you put in to this! 👍👍
Jeez......that's a bit much.....lol...Thanks man! Looking at the older videos....They were much better....but took so much longer...If you get a chance watch the slammer and saragosa saltist vids....those took a few hundred hrs apiece.....
@@TackleAdvisors Have already. I have several UA-cam ID's and have been a sub for a while. Not sure which ID is the sub ID though. Different ID for phone, ipad, PC. You deliver the best reel review. Never have I seen better passion and love. Keep it up mate.
Finally dude!!!!!!!! I literally was waiting on this video!!!!! You got me locked in all day waiting my notifications! I was pissed it wasn't out yesterday. Sorry it's that drama I enjoy..😆😆😆🤑🤑🤑 you got ballz brotha...thanks for your opinions! This video is going to make you famous! Guarantee your subs are going to spike after this!
I spent 14 hrs on the editing rig just for it to spit out corrupted files....today.....did nothing differnt....took half the time for each render....and both were not corrupt....no clue wtf was up...and that happens with any vid over 30 mins...for no damn reason....frustrating is not the word...
Also worth noting I had to unplug all pricey electronics after my high end surge protector burned out... That hurricane brought down lotsa trees on wires and surges were occurring very often.
@@TackleAdvisors hey man! Totally understand the process on editing videos...im sure its tons of work to provide this great content! That crap happens...but from what you shown in this...so far I'm impressed on the style of this reel. I agree the spin off housing with that o-ring is a great way to block debris to travel that shaft which i give kudos for that design...that's where I feel the majority of sand and water actually get in...and that boot gasket needs to be more accurate when re screwing it...it's way off...for sure it'll break when reinstalling it...but in those comparisons...the Daiwa is a solid reel...i really like the design...and to tell you in reality for my style of fishing dealing with saltwater...it comes down to the upper shaft sealing where the rotor spinning bring in debris from the beaches or rain if it's a sandy area is what makes and breaks the reel of longevity...water protrusion is what really causes the majority of reel failures. But money wise...i wouldn't pay for neither spinfisher nor this reel...Shimano FL to me still for the best bang of the buck especially that x-protect...and you know...there's no reason you have to go there. With my 4000 FL caught a 42" Tarpon with zero flex, flying out of the water like 5 times fishing from a bridge...no problem at all. So I don't know...even the spinfisher doesn't convince me to get it. And man that reel is sooooo butter smooth! Why do you think it's sold out everywhere!? Which to me Daiwa should pay attention to the Shimano Stradic FL.
I think you did a fair review of the reel. It's just not that special in any way. Daiwa has to know you call em as you see em. They should have just sent you the new Saltiga if they were looking for a better review. This reel just has above average gearing because of its size. I'd Much rather get the new, or old Gosa/Spheros. Great review as always Scoob 🎣👑👏
I'm glad you think so....Thanks man! Been hearing about a local capt. who has multiple trashed saltigas and diawa won't help them....Trying to find out the first hand info and if they can send me the trashed reels.
DAIWA BG MQ = Big Game Monocoque = BigˌKäk for short ( Monocoque = mänəˌkäk ) Head to your nearest fishing tackle retailer and ask to see the BIG käk TODAY!
@@Megalops_Mark Monocoque nice and pretty, offers some advantages, simplicity and a bigger gear, although if l think a bit deeper not necessarily a bigger gear, what holds a multiple screwed body from holding same dimension main gear? Straight this simplicity, a single threaded piece is dangerous, think about what happens if it breaks, yeah, fishing ends with it and you may throw it or best case scenario search for spare parts as the body and/or the handle threaded support. So this thread holds the whole torque and side forces which appear, that's just a thought, perhaps there won't ever be any issues with that.
I don't think I can ever go back to the Penn's. I have had several battle models and they all corrode horribly on the body, and just this weekend, one of my 4000's stopped oscillating. Opened her up and the gear was disintegrated, no teeth. No signs of water, and was greased well. Just seems it crumbled whatever that material is made of. I have done several repairs to most of them. So far, no issues with the Spinfisher V's. Just watched the reviews of the BG BQ's and was nearing purchase until I saw the materials inside made of zinc, etc. Decision now to go ahead and pay the extra for the Shimano Stradic FL and eventually replace my bigger spinning reels with the Saragosa's. My son in law has these and they are so smooth in comparsion, it makes my Penn's feel like $10 POS. He has had several seasons fishing exactly same as me from our boat in Saltwater and has had zero issues, no corrosion and no servicing and they are flawless!
Great information as always. Here’s my $0.02. Most freshwater fishermen don’t do a lot of maintenance, and for the most part, don’t have to and for a number of reasons this reel probably isn’t on their radar. Most saltwater fishermen buying this price point of reel want and possibly need to do some level of maintenance. One time use seals, specialty tooling, a million parts, etc. kill that for a lot of people. As you mentioned, the spinfisher and slammer iii are easy to maintain and get parts for. Daiwa may sell a ton of these, but at some point, people are going to get frustrated with the maintenance and repairs, especially at this price point.
I went into this thinking that this sealing was a response to people not being able to access daiwa magseal......and now it's the same damn thing..now you have to find a tool....40$ - 80$ is the price to expect...and often unavailble on ebay So it's pretty clear daiwa wants to grow their service end of the business....In my recent experiences with their service they're 0-4...and yeah..not everyone services their own gear....but a surprising amount would like to....and a 6pack goes a long way extending the good years of a reels life :)
Without that tool, that I have no way of buying, I won't be buying one of these. And I'm looking to purchase a 6000 size next. The Battle iii 6000 has a brass main gear for $135. The decision is made
@@hothmobile100 not really even a issue with me. I use the penn fierce 3 live liner and it's never gave me bad line lay to where it's a problem. I fish the surf on windy days also.
@@hothmobile100 I think that was only a problem with the battle 2's. And then I don't think it's all sizes. I have two 8000s and I don't have a problem with them. My 4000 is a different story. I can't even consider using braided line on it. It's just pathetic. Hopefully the 3's will be better
One of the best videos you've ever made. I thought it was fair. This is why I watch your videos. They teach me so much about reels. You definitely make the days I'm not able to fish on less boring. I actually bought a Bantam MGL thanks to you (found a brand new one for $199 in a tackle shop). Lovely reel for redfin perch crankbait and bladebait fishing I do.
Very interesting video. Personally, since I fish exclusively in fresh water, I’m pretty confident that either the Fuego LT or Ballistic LT are just about perfect for me. Plenty of water resistance, good smooth drags, very light, more than enough strength and stiffness for anything I catch around here. Interesting video on the new BG MQ for sure, but not quite the reel for me, I think.
The clear plastic washer on top of the drag stack is a cheap arsed heat shield like the white one on the Saltigas. Meant to prevent heat generated in the drag stack damaging the base of the drag knob which used to happen on the Z series Saltigas on big hard running fish.
@@mickdayday1152 Thanks man!!!! that was my fear...I called the daiwa rep on that. (no reply)...i was worried it was just a high temp plastic to act as a buffer instead of a heat sink...IF you saw the past video section about the saragossa sw I mentioned and showed a picture of a friends saltiga with a melted drag washer...and the saragosa sw has a metal pluger
This was wonderful. Very thorough and complete. I wish there were more reviews like this. Shimano in particular uses marketing jargon and then explains it with more jargon. It's hard to know what is in the reel. I own a Spinnfisher V and a BG. You are spot on when talking about the feel of these two reels. I surf fish in Florida and stay out of the water. I learned a lot about how to clean the reels when I come home. I wasn't aware of the issue with roller bearing or bushing so I will open them and see how they are doing. There were lots of parts on the table I just wonder if you had any leftover?
I'm convinced that something simple like a fishing reel is being overcomplicated. The day you have to buy special tools to perform maintenance on a reel, it's gone to far. Back up a bit daiwa. Fantastic, you created a solid body reel........noone has it, but let me tell you, most guys worth their salt that take care of the gear they spend their hard earned money on want ease of maintenance.
Here's the rub on the ONce piece body....I don't value it as much as what they're marketing it to be...IT's a threaded on sideplate....Used for decades....Most recently Van Staal, Tsunami Shield and their oem's, ANd abu garcia mgxtreme....nothing new......It benefits the VS the most....and it's just a plastic supsplied wrench to open....the Tsunami comes with the wrench too.....
Really? A new Saragosa? Wow! Perhaps that answers why there's no 6000s left here in uk, waiting for the new model to hit the shelves, will wait for that then, done deal, cheers for that info.
Great review in terms of sealing and smoothness of operation. Would like to see the difference in max drag between the BG and similar sized BG MQ. I get about 8 lbs at full spool with the BG tested on a calibrated brass scale and got owned by a jack crevalle this weekend. The reel was fine though after having half the line run out by multiple jacks and a couple 10 lb bonita. I had to thumb the spool to stop from being spooled a few times and broke the jacks off on purpose. What I like about the Diawa reels is they bottom out against metal and keep you from over flexing the spool against the drag. I'm either going to go up to the 4500 BG or maybe "upgrade" to the MQ if it puts out more drag. I can't see spending more for a Saragossa in that size reel and will reserve that for the 10000 size.
watching this elaborated review of the comparasion and the tear down made me decide so much better. Thank you so much for your time putting this out. I was in such dilemma and eager buying one just to get the experience of Monocoque feeling before I get the New Saltiga 2020. I guessed I will stick to my Daiwa BG 2016 and Penn Slammer 3 for now and save up for the new Saltiga.
wanted a gossa, but settled for BG MQ when the supply dried up. fished it this spring, mostly plugging. Happy overall. One complaint is I had a bail close on a cast. Been more conscious of opening and position and hasn't been an issue.
have you ever experience bad gear meshing? ive hardly used mine and intermittently during use, the gears start to feel bad and as soon as that happens i stop using it. When i get home it feels buttery smooth again.
All that money for a zinc gear....the spinfisher vi Even with 5500 and under have aluminum and 6500 above have brass. This reel is a little over priced for what you get IMO. BTW i purchased a ssvi 6500 for only $159 on amazon. Can’t beat that. Good review btw.
It's tough... Zinc is a helluva strong alloy.... And can be stronger than AL... But i know I want everything that comes along with a forged machined or forged how shimano does it main gear
Tackle Advisors we’re in a time where it should be the norm but you do in a sense get what you pay for. I love seeing new reels and technology but to me the average guy spending $200 or more is in the dream reel range and I believe people expect quality materials. The thought that these companies get materials cheaper than we can and bearings are sold by the cent. I believe that they could have made a better reel for the money instead of playing the “new shiny reel” ploy for sales. Thanks for the response btw.
Another great video! I’ll take the Penn ssvi in A 5500 or 6500 on a. Boat getting sprayed with salt water an the way out or home . Thanks ! For the dissection =Great information.
I don't see any issue. Been using all Japanese brands . Reels got sprayed by rough seas while boating. It worked fine. Just have a small WD40 on standby. But never use. Reels worked fine. Got BG 5000 for 45 years with very little maintenance. Bought a newer BG with double stopped. Only fished 5-10 kg fish on it. Just washed it after use. It will last for years Once I forgot to remove a fishing set on a boat for three days, the reel jammed. The boat is parking in the sea. Not moving. Dismantle the reel with lots of WD40, Presto ! It worked fine as before !
Why dont they get you to work with them in the design proccess instead of releasing the product then hoping you'll like it, thanks for your honest review.
One company has offered me a spot on the team doing just that...then covid hit....Daiwa and Shimano - everything begins and ends in japan....Friend of mine develops product for shimano.....ammazing how that process works..and how disjointed it is.
For me, all the daiwa reels up from the BG5000 are all mag sealed( nero, saltist, saltiga) which I just refuse to buy because I service my own reels and I can't afford a saltiga. The bg mq is the only daiwa stepup from the BG that is not magsealed. As for the special tool, surely some thin wall tube, with the slots cut in it would be easy to make?, that might be a deal breaker. Comparing it to the spinfisher for waterproofing, I think is a little unfair. The spinfisher carries a certified ipx5 rating. The daiwa talks itself up but never claims to have an ipx rating. Pricewise, does the bgmq handling and power trump an ipx rating? Only an on the water review will sort that out. Hint hint.....
I replaced the line roller bushings with crbb in all of my BGs. I put a drop of Liquid Bearings on there every time I finish with fishing and I've never had a problem with them. I don't really care for the bushings
Bent shafts were an issue I've seen enough of to be curious...It looked like by memory it was slightly thicker in the mq....I posted an ask on stripersonline....and a member (hk jonathan) cracked his and took measurements. A few years ago the same guy sent me his slammer 3 to tear down and use for a bit
@@TackleAdvisors I plan on getting a new cat-fish jigging/ shore jigging reel, and so far 6000 bg mq seems to fit the bill, i would love to see some tests from people on the water though, but looks a lot beefier then the regular bg i use in the 3000 size. What do you think, would it handle heavy 60g jigs + silicone in strong rivers?
I’m in the market of a surf reel, and I was looking at the Daiwa BG MQ when Daiwa announced its launch, but now I’m torn between the og BG, the Spheros, and the Saltist Backbay. Lots of great info and I really enjoyed listening to your teardown! Keep up the great content!
@@charliehandley1057 way late but I have the bg and back bay and I love the back bay, but the bg gets the job done fine, I just really love how smooth my mag sealed back bay still is where my bg is slower due to loading it with grease for protection
Could you do a saltist mq review like this, I just got a 6000 and I love it, but I would also like to get to know the insides a little bit better without having to learn real maintenance on the way
Thanks for the breakdown! I've used a BG MQ 4000 fluke/tog fishing exclusively for a few seasons. It works perfectly for shore based bottom fishing but I never thought I'd be able to surf fish with it and glad I watched your video. I'm looking at a new 6500 for surf fishing and I'll consider your recommendations.
That little song you were singing.... did Daiwa come and snatch you up??! I haven't seen any recent reel breakdown videos and your stuff was golden, creme de la creme bro. Nobody has replaced you since your departure ;(
That's a bucket list fish for me.....I want to catch a Monster......If we had them around my area I'd actually be into bottom fishing...Instead we have flounder, tog and seabass...tasty.....but meh fighters...tog are so so.
@@TackleAdvisors the irish west coast ist definetly the best area for big conger, cause tere are much and big ones, but also south european atlantik and meditteran sea are good, I go at least one time per year on a 1-4 week conger trip and believe me, for the big ones, especially from the rocks, you need powerfull rods, and, that's the key: the reel with the most cranking power around so you can crank the fish up from the bottom, even when you can't pull with the rod anymore cause IT's under too much load, but, if you fishing for them, dont set the drag higher than 20kg, cause it can always happen that something like a shark bites and you don't want to fall in the water from a 5meter rock in 10 degree cold atlantik water! another thing what needs that drag pressure is to stop big catfish between snags and if i say big than i mean over 150lb
If you are going to go with this reel then stick with the regular BG/ Saltist. You can do your own maintenance on them and the MQ needs a special tool that very few people have in the US to take apart. You will have to send it out to Daiwa to be serviced.

I have saragoas in every size and they have been great. Only complaint is the oscillation feels a little strange. Hard to explain but as if you can feel the top and bottom of the range.
Not quite in the class of these reels, but you need to bring in the fin nor lethal, for those $99 guys. I bet it will make it into your comparisons with some more expensive reels in the future. Re this video, lets hope Shimano don't try to monetise the Gosa brand in the same way Diawa just did with this new BG.
Moisture is a thing that you cannot control . Also you never know how long a reel has been just sitting in a factory before being sold grease can dry out also . seals are not the only problem . i personally like stripping my reels down every year even though i have over 7 reels i still do it to make shure they are not corroding away inside .
You absolutely can control moisture..but it's not water vapor / humidity types of moisture that cause trouble...it's sediment, saltwater, and particulates that come with the water. There are many reels that offer high levels of sealing, better than what the MQ offers at the price. lubricants can last a very long time without breakdown when not exposed to outside elements.
I’m deciding between the Stradic FL, saltist back bay, or this reel. Looking at 4000 size to pull big reds from structure. Which would you suggest? I have a 2500 FL and love it but I’m leaning towards the Back Bay
Honestly, give me a Shimano that I can open up to clean and lubricate and replace these bearings every season if necessary! Instead of replacing bearings on a Shimano, you can also install bushings! but hasn't the quality deteriorated over the years? the question is does it not get too hot with heavy catches. In any case, it's not going to make any noise to let you know that something is running rough!
You can tell the reel is good if you are a user not only a reviewer.., you are a fun of daiwa bg.,but daiwa is a craft only there high end reel is good, dont missed lead the people..choose shimano over daiwa.,Never regret on Shimano
the plastic washer I think is to keep the surface of the drag from wearing down an then allowing corrosion so the plastic washer kinda protects the metal I'm assuming tbh but think that makes the most sense but maybe its something else but my other reel doesn't have that an has small scratches on that top part of drag
As always, the most informative review... now if only we could get a "Gone With the Wind" style intermission in the middle. Seriously, thank you for sharing your savvy.
Yeah! you were absolutely fair in your assessment 'and so its with all that being said' im more interested in the new Saragosa. Probably get the MQ when you undoubtedly post a screaming amazon deal on it, thanks as always
Great video and great info. Thanks for all the work you put into it. Your assessment was very fair. I do not see how Daiwa can justify the price they want for this reel.
Awesome Scoob, was wondering what cleaning do you do to a reel that gets dunked in the salt? For the first time I took my reel apart using your BG breakdown video but was unsure of how to clean the parts if it’s dunked in saltwater (mineral spirits, corrosion X spray or clean water?) Also what reel grease do you recommend for salt and freshwater (if different) reels? Thanks as always for a great video.
Update from this old video. I have run my BG MQ now for 2.5 years hard in salt and fresh water and it’s still butter smooth. So now I’m wondering if all this hype about sealing is just marketing garbage. Take care and wash down all your reels. This big main gear. Zinc or Aluminum or brass. Who cares. Daiwa did a good job with their spinners. Better durability than any of my Shimanos after 2.5 years of being beat to death.
If you look at the rash guard lower internally you can see a raised lip thatI think is meant to hook the ring gasket and pull it down into place .But in order for it to work correctly you would have to re install the rash guard lower end first not upper end as you have done. correct me if Im wrong.
I took note of that... But that's a tough ask.. As it's blind and there's know way to tell if it's done correctly unless you remove everything and look from the inside out... Then take it apart again and then redo the booth hoping to replicate.. Know what I mean?
Great video and strip down but reels no matter what brand come with a warranty, why stress just pay what can afford n use it , if it breaks sling it back under warranty, simples .
Thanks for the review...at least now we folks in India know that we'll never buy this reel since there isnt a Daiwa service center in sight in this country!!! And if each manufacturer has to come out with a reel specific tool to even open it God help us all!!!
joe olivas had the bg fail on him multiple times because of that gear. granted he does fish nearly every day and puts lots of stress on his gear. nonetheless the gears were a common failure point for him. the spheros lasted him 10 times longer before any issue arose.
What would you buy....new Saragosa SWA, Penn Slammer III or Daiwa BG MQ? All in similar size to a Daiwa BG 8000 to use 65 braid for big tuna, slammer Mahi or even large King Mackerel to use 2-3 days a week.
Hi there, Big fan, thank you for all the work and details you put into your videos. I am looking for a 4000-5000 size spinning reel in either Shimano or Daiwa unless you can recommend any other brand. Looking to use for saltwater rock fishing and beach fishing. budget around $150-$250 what reels do you recommend and what has the better saltwater protection.
Was I fair in my analysis and assessment? Let me know here!
I think it was a fair review. When Daiwa sent you the reels, they probably meant "Just be fair. *wink*"
I'm with HN, did they mean be fair as in be honest or fair as in say it's a good reel
Wanted to ask a question. Say you buy a new reel and turn it fast just to test it's smoothness. It is smooth but makes a soft winding sound only when you turn it fast.... Is that normal?
Totally fair! I think that reel is solid 👌 but sorry Daiwa I'm not sold with it and neither does the spinfisher...I'd rather buy the Stradic FL.
Fair assessment....and still get it, I am a Daiwa fan boy😂.
I think they should definitely make servicing these reels more accessible to the home service man. Tools, mag lube and mag bearings. Magseal has been on the market long enough.

I am impressed! :) not by this BG MQ but by the video. Watched it completely. Timestamps can be really useful looking back one day. Really good comparison to similar reels. Great video and many thanks for your time and effort you put in to this! 👍👍
Most perfectly delivered review of reels on the face of the earth.
I always come here before I buy a reel! Great video like usual!
Thanks brotha!
DAIWA BG MQ = Big Game Monocoque = BigˌKäk for short ( Monocoque = mänəˌkäk )
Head to your nearest fishing tackle retailer and ask to see the BIG käk TODAY!
Somehow, I think it’s not gonna end up well for the customer! lol
Daiwa is never sending you anything again 😂
@@miamiwax5504 sure looks that way
@@Megalops_Mark Monocoque nice and pretty, offers some advantages, simplicity and a bigger gear, although if l think a bit deeper not necessarily a bigger gear, what holds a multiple screwed body from holding same dimension main gear? Straight this simplicity, a single threaded piece is dangerous, think about what happens if it breaks, yeah, fishing ends with it and you may throw it or best case scenario search for spare parts as the body and/or the handle threaded support. So this thread holds the whole torque and side forces which appear, that's just a thought, perhaps there won't ever be any issues with that.
Robert Dumicz I guess we’ll have to wait and see. The old model was highly regarded as a workhorse, I hope this one live up to our expectations.
I’ve never seen this much detail on a tear down video .... subscribed 👍👍👍
I went into this thinking that this sealing was a response to people not being able to access daiwa magseal......and now it's the same damn thing..now you have to find a tool....40$ - 80$ is the price to expect...and often unavailble on ebay
So it's pretty clear daiwa wants to grow their service end of the business....In my recent experiences with their service they're 0-4...and yeah..not everyone services their own gear....but a surprising amount would like to....and a 6pack goes a long way extending the good years of a reels life :)
Always look forward to these tear downs. Thank you for your hard work!!! Vanford and battle 3 next please.
Gotta secure one first
Tackle Advisors can’t wait till you do a vanford one
Without that tool, that I have no way of buying, I won't be buying one of these. And I'm looking to purchase a 6000 size next. The Battle iii 6000 has a brass main gear for $135. The decision is made
But penn line lay is never as good as modern Daiwa.
@@hothmobile100 not really even a issue with me. I use the penn fierce 3 live liner and it's never gave me bad line lay to where it's a problem. I fish the surf on windy days also.
The line lay on my slammer 3 and spinnfisher 6 is perfect.
@@hothmobile100 I think that was only a problem with the battle 2's. And then I don't think it's all sizes. I have two 8000s and I don't have a problem with them. My 4000 is a different story. I can't even consider using braided line on it. It's just pathetic. Hopefully the 3's will be better
Best analysis of any reel review I have seen on the net. Great job. A++.
1 hour and 48 minutes?! You're a madman.
Mwah ha ha ha ha haaaas
One of the best videos you've ever made. I thought it was fair. This is why I watch your videos. They teach me so much about reels. You definitely make the days I'm not able to fish on less boring. I actually bought a Bantam MGL thanks to you (found a brand new one for $199 in a tackle shop). Lovely reel for redfin perch crankbait and bladebait fishing I do.
Aww yesss, you made my day close to 2 hrs more interesting. Thanks a ton fellow Jersey angler!
Great job by the way Scooby, marathon edit bro👍🏽
@@mickdayday1152 Thanks man!!!! that was my fear...I called the daiwa rep on that. (no reply)...i was worried it was just a high temp plastic to act as a buffer instead of a heat sink...IF you saw the past video section about the saragossa sw I mentioned and showed a picture of a friends saltiga with a melted drag washer...and the saragosa sw has a metal pluger
No way to get in without this tool.
Challenge accepted, and warranty voided lol.
Well the refinement of the BG will never make me feel as warm and fuzzy as you putting my comment on your video 😂
LOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here's the rub on the ONce piece body....I don't value it as much as what they're marketing it to be...IT's a threaded on sideplate....Used for decades....Most recently Van Staal, Tsunami Shield and their oem's, ANd abu garcia mgxtreme....nothing new......It benefits the VS the most....and it's just a plastic supsplied wrench to open....the Tsunami comes with the wrench too.....
what was nice about the bg was it was a good value for money. At double the price, the BG MQ is not IMO. It's not even top 5.
I got the Certate LT4000 and passed on this BG MQ. Glad i did the certate is a hell of alot better. I lucked out and got it for $375 instead of $500
I've got my money waiting for the new Saragosa.
Same here!
@@TackleAdvisors So we can expect a review on the new gosa as well?
Better than the Twilight movies! Lol 😆
How dare you..... Team Edward 4life!
Was waiting for this one.
Hey Scoob, thanks for the shout out about measuring the main gear. Great review as always
watching this elaborated review of the comparasion and the tear down made me decide so much better.
My 20 year old baitrunner waterproof drag seal has kept the felt washers fresh since I bought it
Thanks for the review👍all your videos are the best reviews for reels. You try to be as very unbiased as you can and I like that🤘
wanted a gossa, but settled for BG MQ when the supply dried up. fished it this spring, mostly plugging. Happy overall. One complaint is I had a bail close on a cast. Been more conscious of opening and position and hasn't been an issue.
would you recommend for freshwater?
have you ever experience bad gear meshing? ive hardly used mine and intermittently during use, the gears start to feel bad and as soon as that happens i stop using it. When i get home it feels buttery smooth again.
Amazing what daiwa can do with cast zinc gears, strong and smooth as butter.
I'm found grease of control button of bait casting , Benzy Ventula reel . Oh protect from water !
The Michael Baden of Fishing reels...
They need to go look at the old Michael reel or the quick reel from d.a.m
And a crack
Another great video! I’ll take the Penn ssvi in
A 5500 or 6500 on a.
It will last for years
Once I forgot to remove a fishing set on a boat for three days, the reel jammed.
@@TackleAdvisors bloody covid, hopefully when its over you can have valuable input with with that company. Cheers from down under. 👍
Let me ask... Who's are you using? I used to do the same and then the quality went down.. This was 15 years ago...
@@TackleAdvisors I don't know what brand they are but it's the ones from hpr bearings in Miami. Either those or sometimes I order from boca
And I said crbb but I meant the stainless.
Great review man, I love how u threw in the diameters of the shaft and gear in comparison to the 4k bg!
Charlie Handley the BG isn’t the OG black and gold. But I know what you’re saying.
6atlantis yea you’re right, it just is at least to me, I’m a bit younger than most of you guys
@@charliehandley1057 way late but I have the bg and back bay and I love the back bay, but the bg gets the job done fine, I just really love how smooth my mag sealed back bay still is where my bg is slower due to loading it with grease for protection
Could you do a saltist mq review like this, I just got a 6000 and I love it, but I would also like to get to know the insides a little bit better without having to learn real maintenance on the way
I can’t be the first one to ask but I havnt seen the answer to “Does Diawa fix these problems in the Saltist MQ?”
Where do you buy the side plate removal tool? You should link all the tools in the video description.
Right now the gosa 6000 is the standard to beat. Slammer 4, is very good as well.

My fave reel in my lineup
Thanks for that review I was curious about this reel but I am not convinced its a good investment based on your review.
That little song you were singing.... did Daiwa come and snatch you up??! I haven't seen any recent reel breakdown videos and your stuff was golden, creme de la creme bro. Nobody has replaced you since your departure ;(
The black & gold version is for Proud Boys.
I fish 45lb of drag, to fight big conger without giving any line, but I use the biggest saltigas for this job
Thank you , another informative video. Just pick up spinfisher vi 5500 for 145. Off Amazon!
What's your opinion on the BG MQ a year afterward? And have you fished it a lot in that time?
If you are going to go with this reel then stick with the regular BG/ Saltist. You can do your own maintenance on them and the MQ needs a special tool that very few people have in the US to take apart. You will have to send it out to Daiwa to be serviced.
The BG is an awesome reel!
great review at least on there MQ reels they have got rid of the useless reverse switch, those things drive me crazy.
I just brought a Fin Nor Offshore 10500, when you hold it in your hand and you hear its clicking while turning the spool you know that's the thing a man wants.
An endurance test would be interesting, alu gear, coated even, vs brass and stainless steel gears, so those Daiwa and Shimano vs Fin Nor and other stainless steel and brass gear reels.
I have saragoas in every size and they have been great. Only complaint is the oscillation feels a little strange. Hard to explain but as if you can feel the top and bottom of the range.
I have heard the smaller Gosas have a balancing of the rotor problem. May be what you are talking about.
New daiwa bg 2020 and shimano saragosa 2020 .. which one better?
Gosa for sure
Great video
Great video and great info. Thanks for all the work you put into it. Your assessment was very fair. I do not see how Daiwa can justify the price they want for this reel.
Damn I had to take a break after 57 minutes, this video is long but worth it, well done as usual, very informative
Oooihhhh lawdy. Feature length goodness. Thank you!
Worth the wait on this video, many thanks🐳🐳🐳
Scuff the spool knob center and add epoxy to eliminate the line catching notch.
Waiting for your battle 3 video lol, I did enjoy this one.
Thank you for honesty and I look forward to Shimano Stradic SW 2020 review
joe olivas had the bg fail on him multiple times because of that gear. granted he does fish nearly every day and puts lots of stress on his gear. nonetheless the gears were a common failure point for him. the spheros lasted him 10 times longer before any issue arose.
What would you buy....new Saragosa SWA, Penn Slammer III or Daiwa BG MQ? All in similar size to a Daiwa BG 8000 to use 65 braid for big tuna, slammer Mahi or even large King Mackerel to use 2-3 days a week.
The Slammer!

Thanks. Looks like I'll save my money and keep using my slammer and normal bg for now.
great stuff .. get your hands on the new stradic SW .. that would be cool

Hi there,
Big fan, thank you for all the work and details you put into your videos. I am looking for a 4000-5000 size spinning reel in either Shimano or Daiwa unless you can recommend any other brand. Looking to use for saltwater rock fishing and beach fishing. budget around $150-$250 what reels do you recommend and what has the better saltwater protection.
