The NBA Playoffs are here and although Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs are out of the playoffs, Wemby is expected to win the NBA rookie of the year award and become the next face of basketball. The French Unicorn has taken the NBA by storm after a stellar rookie season. But can the San Antonio Spurs build a championship team around Victor Wembanyama? Aside from being the NBA’s overall rookie leader in terms of production, Wemby also rivals Rudy Gobert as potentially the defensive player of the year. How good can Victor wembanyama really become for the Spurs?
The San Antonio Spurs have a solid young core with Wembanyama, Jeremy Sochan, Devin Vassell, and Keldon Johnson. Coach Pop might be a great mentor but the success of the Spurs rebuild still depends on how they manage their draft picks, cap space, and free agent signings. The Spurs can draft some talented players in the 2024 NBA draft to pair with Wembanyama, or they can trade for guys like Trae Young, Dejounte Murray, or whoever wants a new team. The Wembanyama is just so good that many veterans might want to sign with the Spurs to increase their chances of winning a championship with Wembanyama. Along with Luka Doncic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokic, and Anthony Edwards, Wembanyama could be the next face of the NBA.

Most of the players that could soon take us on a deep playoff run are too hard to get. I think we have to build patiently. Hopefully we get a couple of top 7 or 8 picks this draft. That would mean at least 1 more year of building chemistry and developing young guys. We might struggle again next season if we give 2 rookies decent playing time. I can handle 1 more season of tanking/development. We have so many picks coming up for 3 years we just have to be patient here. In 2 years some real stars will be begging to join us.
Agreed. Most fans or illogical because wemby is already good, but we can't win overnight. Spurs still need patience and development, so they can be like the Timberwolves and thunder. Instead of rushing out to make bad moves on aging stars
I think the Spurs will lean toward growing from the draft, but would take a vet if the fit is right. They will look for 1 or 2 more stars over the next couple of years and the rest will be role players.
wouldn't be surprised if they did that. they honestly have a lot of options which can't go wrong 👌

Next season, Pop will see how far Wemby can take the Spurs with no minute restrictions. Then go shopping for some star FA in 2026.
...you must not know pop...wemby is playing in the Olympics this off season...just another excuse for pop to start him on minutes restrictions till December...then any little injury he gets he'll put wemby back on minutes restrictions for a month...I have a feeling pop is going to try to tank again...I hope im wrong...if we keep all of our picks and don't make a play for a star pg...pop is going to tank

After hearing we got the number one pick it still feels like it was yesterday, one of the only moments in my life where I can almost put myself back in on that day vividly every detail and basically relive it over an over .. hoping we'd have a winning season wasn't the case although 2nd half of season made up for all the lows of the first half.. the way Victor transition into Alienbenyama an took over the NBA world like he did I feel confident not only to be playoff bound but at least make it past more than the first rd against any talented team, we can grind out a 7 game series even on the road unless we match up against a roster with deep bench without a true point guard...as is I'm happy with our development and in Wembys own words seems like were" heading in the right direction " we just lack experience. Even Victor is a part of our Kryptonite TURNOVERS TURNOVERS TURNOVERS. 7 game series we can beat a talented team but not so much a deep one because most people I think don't realize that our second half wins were clutch 4th qtrs by every single one of our players at one point whether it be the game winning shot or closing out the game playing spurs basketball GSG !!! can't wait for this season to start just as much as last
@@spursxx980 playing in the Olympics when we ended our season weeks ago is enough rest time . He's not going against team USA every night so there will be games he's not going to be difficult to recover, an if you didn't realize he hits the weight room hard after every game so fatigue is not something of concern going into year 2. He has stated plenty of times how much a brief return back home and to play for his country gives him a drive in stamina that he benefits from not deprived of. Didn't notice Wemby made it clear nobody knows his body(durability) better than him. That stupid ball boy was the reason he had to miss time not being overworked or overstrained

Spurs will be, at minimum, will be a play-in team. If a trade for an all-star is made, they will be a 5-7 seed.
As a Spurs fan I hope they just use the picks this next 2 years and in the free agency of 2025 they land the superstar to complement Wemby, so we can develop the young players and get Wemby more NBA experience. This isn't a 100 meter races, this is a Iron man race.
I think what the Spurs really need next season is a good center to replace Wemby and protect him from injuries. Collins is a liability most of the time, althought his end of season was much better.
This was a seriously well thought out video! Couldn't agree more with your analogy that this new Wemby era for the Spurs is like a whole new blueprint for an entirely different house than that which they built and maintained for Robinson and Duncan, and eventually Kawhi for a while.

Vassel, Johnson and Sochan are solid players, but if they are going to make a play for the championship, they are going to need solid players and Wemby HAS TO STAY HEALTHY. If he stays healthy and they use there picks well in the Draft, they will drastically improve and possibly be contenders in as little as 2 years. The problem is that the longevity of the tallest players doesn't have an encouraging statistical history.
We need to see how Wemby's body will support 70 games without minutes restriction. Than we must go to wi it all. Go Spurs Go!

The spurs organization is one of the best at development...I truly Believe we have all we need to win with this group once they all figure out their roles. Add a couple of pieces here and there and watch them compete for a championship in a few years..

Im liking drafting a robin for him
I'm an OKC fan so I say this with reservations but I think Josh Giddey would be perfect on The Spurs. He's an elite elite playmaker which is what they need. He doesn't really get a chance to properly show what he can do as we have Shai as the lead guard and J Dub and Chet can both chip in with a bit of playmaking so seeing Giddey hold the keys to a franchises offence and just run every play would be exciting. Plus Giddey's skillset isn't a necessity on our team and we need to keep our big money for Shai, Chet and J Dub so it's kind of inevitable that he will leave eventually.
I hope Josh never has to leave our team because of cap restrictions. The new CBA and salary cap should allow us to be more flexible in a few years so I believe we can keep him somehow money-wise if Sam wanted to
@@riroballs I don’t think we will keep him. We may end up dealing out three supermax contracts to Chet, J Dub and Shai. Look at what’s going to happen to Boston in a year after Tatum 60+ million per year deal is added to Browns 60+ million deal and then think about what would happen with 3 on a small market team 😬 and we will still need to pay Dort and Cason Wallace and Isaiah Joe and all the other important role players in the team. Paying Josh 25+ million will just be impossible. Maybe we’ll give him a nice contract this summer but once Chet and Dub get theirs we’ll probably have to find Josh a new home.

@@Chessheromusic Damn dude that was a load of rubbish. Josh is one of the best passers in the league, he can rebound and he's not as bad a scorer as you think. When Shai was out towards the end of the season and the rest of the team had to take his shots, Josh put in some high scoring games so he can do it, he just doesn't get those shots when Chet, Dub and Shai are all on the floor. Come to think about it, maybe we should keep him as a starter on the top seed in the West rather than send him to one of the worst teams in basketball 🤷♂
