This musical force combined with these beautiful synths made many of us children in the era grow up with a great musical influence. both in the local popular music of each country and in the styles Italo, Eurodance, Trance, Techno, House, Hardcore that are the force and base of the electronic music culture of the 90s.
It's so cool to see a breakdown of a style like this. It's really helpful to understanding what is going on in the songs. When I find a new genre, I usually start by looking for drummer videos for the same reason. I don't even play the drums, but there's so much foundational information, like here. It helps to figure out how all the parts fit together.
Yeah I think having a female vocal singing something would suit it perfectly (someone with an Alice Deejay type voice) and I feel it sounds a bit rushed, it's brilliant (especially the lead synth chord sequence and bass line) but feels like the samples weren't thought about too much to make them work as good as they could've. I would've also personally used a real 909 on it.
The sounds instantly evoke that period when acts like Capella, Livin Joy, Alex Party and (the British act) JX were having pop hits across Europe. Many of those used "illegal" vocal samples from old soul/disco tracks like 'Touch and Go' and the Loleatta Holloway records, but there were also tons of workaday dance tracks that used various "Ooh"s, "Yeah"s, and "Whoa"s from sample CDs that quickly became clichéd. (FWIW, the "woah" backing vocal on the big Haddaway tune was from the first ever sample CD released by Zero G). In that sense, this recreation is a very accurate pastiche. There were loads of records in the early '90s that sounded just like this.
If anyone knows Italodance, Paolo, you are the one! (He says as he stands in front of his computer making a complete fool of himself dancing to the beat.) 👍
A friend was in Gianfranco Bortolotti's studio (or knew someone from there i no longer remember) in 1994, he said he counted 7 or 9 Roland D-50's. Speaking of that saw wave lead, ala Capella, they do use 4 detuned partials but two partials are 1 octave below. It is instant "U Got 2 Know" sound.
Great info, Don, thank you - wow, seven/nine D-50s! Cool. Yeah, I tried to do the Lower partials -1 octave and the Upper partials at regular octave but to my ears for this video it sounded better at the same octave; it's very probably going to be different per song basis, of course! ;)
Thanks Don , you have know idea how long I've been trying to find the origins of that saw lead. I did read a while back D50 was used but now I really hear it through this vid. Top marks to Paulo.
I remember going into clubs in Edinburgh as a student where all you heard was music like this. The scene was huge at the time. We used to listed to Bonus Beats on Forth FM to get ourselves ready before going out.
I was a student atghe time and it was kind of funny how I spent half my money on eurodance and the other half on grunge and early Britpop. At some indie discos at the union bar, you'd hear both styles competing. All the indie/grunge kids hated the dance stuff and the townies hated guitars, but I loved it all.
I've discovered electronic music with eurodance, and these amazing pads and synth leads have been following me ever since. Thanks you for this, you really should put these on Spotify and co, I'm sure a lot of people would appreciate it ! 👍
Still today I hear this kind of music on my cellphone (xmp mod player) and the mod archive webpage are my drug! Spacedebris.mod and beyondmusic.mod are the best 4 channel piece of music ever made.
"Over & over I feel it!" You Motiv8 me "Ooh Ahh Just a Little Bit" hahaha. Steve Rodway is one of the many Euro Dance music producers and song remixers that should be honored for this nice tribute to their sound.
Paolo one of the best ever for me personally. I bought just a 01/wfd and was looking around for some YT demo's and found almost one year later this 😁 how could I mis this one
Super, finally, thanks a lot Paolo, Italodisco/Dance, Eurodance, Electro rules! 👍👌🙏🤘Directly from 1990's! This will be a perfect soundtrack for some modern game, in arcade, retrostyle, Beat'Em Up for example💪👊👏

Great sounds, Paul! That pad sound from the Korg is very nice! Classic 90s sounds (actually a lot of the sounds are still used today!). I enjoy Paul's great musicianship along with the sounds. Who would have thought the 808 and 909 would rein for 40 years back in the day, eh? I just bought a JV-1010 off a young guy who liked 90s sounds (Roland JV IS the 90s!). He seemed surprised that there are editors for it (who says young people are always good with tech, eh?).
That's fantastic!!! Hi, Paolo! Every video by you is like a breath of fresh synth air. One of my favourite eurodance tracks is "Night People - In the Night". I would be absolutely over the moon if you made a tutorial on how to play the main sawtooth part of this song. Thank you for your great channel!!!
Excellent track, totally reminds me of 1993 college exchange trip flew from the UK to stay in Roncoferraro, my exchange friend picked me up at the airport on he's Yamaha bike mid-late afternoon and we went clubbing til 9am the next day, while all the rest of my college mates met their families I was dancing, I got such a beastin from the lecturer. Spent all my money that trip on good food and clubbing CDs.
Paolo you are such an inspiration my man! while I dont have the synths you have here (only a monologue, microbrute, volca beats, and reface dx) I still try to create with what I have and its a wide palette of creativity. however, your older video, "italo disco basslines" is what is got me recently into synths. I've been a rock bass player my entire life. Thank you for providing such a service to the world!
Hi nice video, does anyone know if there is a vst that can emulate or has in its presets the buzzy sequence of the roland d-50 4:55? I make eurodance (or I try) to with pure daw (i don't have hardware like synthesizers) and i can't find a way to emulate that sound that is very characteristic of the eurodance of the 90s, if someone knows I will be grateful.
That D-50 saw/bass sounds so good. Definitely puts that synth on my mind, though I'd probably go for the D-10 since I love the lo-fi sound. Great song! So fantastic!
Back in the days before Autotune, when samples were often lifted off old records or sample CDs, it was quite common for tracks to include vocal snippets that weren't perfectly in key. It's part of what creates the nostalgic feelings for people that were around at the time of this music, and why they often don't like modern stuff, which sounds "too perfect".
Ahhh late 80’s and early 90’s keyboards, I have these as well as the M1 and the SY77, very amazing keyboards. I wonder, have you ever done any videos on the Yamaha SY77 / SY99? Those were really great as well!
Definitely - I was floored by the SY77 when I first heard it in the store when it came out, and eventually I got one back in the '90s. No video on those yet, but I do have a page on the TG77 at my html site → www.synthmania.com/tg77.htm
EuroDJ from my experience yes, but in minimal ways. The SY99 has some better effects and the ability to load in your own samples into it, making it more of a workstation, but it is a lot larger

D50... a legend
Growing up on Capella, Usura, etc. this made me feel a child again. :)
Thank you!
I was as kid more into heavy metal music,as I am today, but this one really hit my nostalgia terribly of those middle school 90s music days.
90’s music is precious!

One of your absolute best compositions. I can take or leave the vocal samples, but the synth sounds are first class.
Vocal sample is bleeding. Vocoder would be better.
Thanks for listening!
It's still huge.
Not really familiar with this genre, but it was a blast hearing this come together. Well done.
