I would love to own your book. I am pregnant with my first child and will be a single parent. I used to be someone who spent 500 a month on groceries for myself and my husband. it was very hard to break that habit once we separated. Now I spend less than 200 a month after watching your videos and adopting your advise. I have a great love now for thrift shopping and was able to get so many things for my baby. I live in the bay area of California, it is by far one of the most expensive places in the country to live and I don't make much money. Thank you for being so helpful and inspirational, and showing me that you can live a good quality life with out spending a ton of money.
Okay, I'll be really honest. I just got your cookbook a few days ago and have been cooking exclusively from it. I apologized to my husband because the meals I've cooked are basically casseroles so far, with the exception of the maple chicken (which rocks!). He looked at me with genuine puzzlement as he really has enjoyed the meals. And so has our adult son. So, yes, they are very simple dishes and aren't really what is considered "fresh" cooking but they are man-pleasers so far for sure.
I just had my family over for dinner, defrosted some chicken breasts, cut them in halves to make it look more, and stretch the meat. Made a wonderful oven baked dish. Fried the chicken quickly on each side, then put it aside. Then fried broccoli, pepper, and boats of onins, plus garlic, salt and pepper. Put everything into an ovenproof caserole, then poured over a sauce of soya sauce, sweet garlic sauce and cream (left over from the birthday cake) In the oven for 30 minutes on 200degrees celcius, served with rice and a salad. Easy, wonderful taste and cheap.
I have a variety of 20 or so spices but I use all of them. I believe the most important thing is to only keep spices that you need and use all the time. If i am trying out a new recipe i will go to the bulk store and get like 1gr of the new spice to see if I like it before I get a big container.
If you have a large garden you could probably plant a laurel tree for its bayleaves. The tree, which is really a large shrub, is very hardy, and you can pick leaves to freeze so that you always have some on hand. Very inexpensive.
I buy my spices at Rural King for $0.89 and at Wal-Mart and Dollar Tree for $1.00. They are basically the same size bottles. Rural King usually has a greater variety. My stomach won't tolerate a lot of spices so I use just the basic. My spice rack has salt, black pepper, onion flakes, parsley, nutmeg, and one called Italian I think. It doesn't have a lot of things in it and friends say it's not strong enough but it's fine for me. I can taste it without it bothering my stomach.
We go to an Amish store. It sells alot of top brand groceries at a fraction of our Walmart prices. Also alot of freezer and baked goods.Like pie shells for .39 cents. Double shells.
Has anyone mentioned, " how beautiful and youthful you look". You both have good genes. You ladies have also shown that buying inexpensive food is still healthy, and I know we need to eat everything in moderation. Thank you for making these down to earth videos. When I watch you ladies I feel relaxed. I never feel like you want something from me. I always feel like you want the best for me. Not many people like you in this world. Lots of hugs to you. Thank you 💕💗💕💗
I’m from the U.K., and I’ve started buying herbs and spices on eBay because I can get 4x as much for the same price as the supermarket jars, I’m saving a small fortune you just need to look around 😊
We just use basic spices here from Big Lots & Dollar Tree. Funny thing is my husband would be happy if I just used creole & sriracha on everything. 🤣🤣🤣
I buy spices at my Indian/Chinese grocery stores. So much cheaper for those spices plus other things like rice, noodles etc. Thanks ladies. Hello from Australia ☀️☀️
Pinterest and and HGTV I love but resent at the same time. It can make you question your contentment which unchecked can be harmful. Appreciate what you have and give thanks. The media makes you question yourself worth. You are loved by god and nothing you own or dont own makes you less of a person. You are also not less of a person because you can only afford $2 meals. Making sacrifices is hard, but you can do it. 🙂
We are so lucky! My husband has a friend who works for a spice company and he can bring home extra spices for free and he doesn't use them very much, so he trades my husband repairs on his mowers and other things for spices! So we are blessed with a lot of good spices for free!
Love this series, could not agree more. This past winter we made a large pot of soup every week and ate it for 2 days lunch and supper, it was delicious, sounds boring right??? The upside was I hardly gained weight this winter like I usually do!
I mix up salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder...put in a small jar next to my stove and use it to season literally everything savory that I cook. It is not only inexpensive but convenient and a time saver.
We have a Winco store that sells spices in bulk. I have found it even cheaper than Walmarts Great Value. Plus you can buy just a spoon of a special spice for those yearly type recipes
I just use avocado and salsa to make guacamole and then with the leftover salsa i simmer some chicken in it with a few tbsp of cream cheese. Its awesome for tacos and the guacamole
I use whatever I have leftover from one recipe to another. My mix of spices are the same thing from hamburgers to white fish dip. My mix is approx. 1 Tbsp onion powder, 1 Tbsp garlic powder, 1 Tbsp turmeric powder, same amount of cornstarch salt.
Listen to these beautiful ladies!I have lived by this my whole life! They know what there talking about!quit making excuses you can feed you and your family for pennies a day!start making your food at home and use there cook book!doesnt matter what store you have look around and figure out what they have you can buy stores all have sales and markdowns!
Take 1 whole chicken, boil with celery root, carrot tops. onion scraps, left over veg peels, cook 2 hrs. cool, shred chicken. save broth. chicken soup for dinner add pasta stars to the broth. Next day chicken salad sandwiches add mayo. Next day chicken wraps add lettuce etc. Last day chicken broth and rice to make risotto.
I like using the powder bouillon to season just about everything I cook. If I want to go a bit more fancy I will add chili powder too.... those are my main seasonings. Simple, to the point and delicious.
Check for spices when you're in the pharmacy. I've found them often for $.50/can. As for few ingredients, chicken salad. Chicken, celery, salad dressing = done. Add grapes, apples, walnuts, whatever if you want and already have them, but not necessary.
Yep..a friend just gave me a bunch of her spices and some of those big jars you were talking about. Ittalian seasoning mixed is my most go to. Ginger and Tumeric and Cinnamon is bout all i mostly use. Cayenne once in a blue moon. Use pepper the most not much salt.
I have been using up my spices and really seeing what I use. If a recipe calls for something I don't have, I look to see what I have that I can substitute. I love your cookbook, and have used it to change up my meals in the rotation. Happy Easter to you and your family.
when at Dollar tree I buy from there and Walmart for spices. I make turmeric tea daily so I do purchase Ginger, turmeric, Cinnamon and black pepper in the Large containers. my guacamole I will use cilantro, onion, lime and a few jalapeno if I have it on hand and hubby is eating it too, if it's just me I'll add green salsa and the avacado and some hot sauce and I'm good to go. I'll look to your website, thanks for the info and the sharing and making of this video..
I buy my spices at the bulk store - If I need two teaspoons of a spice that is what I buy - no leftovers and the cost can be ten cents. I have old fashioned spice tins, the most it takes to fill is about 3 tablespoons and that is all that I buy. I like grinding my pepper corns, buying from the bulk store allows me to buy the fancy pepper corns. I only need enough to fill my grinder. I don't need the huge container from Costco.
I ‘m allergic to onion and garlic so I use dill weed, rosemary or thyme to add a bit of tang to the recipe. I also use paprika, mustard powder, celery seed, salt , pepper, fennel, oregano, and Italian seasoning. I go through a lot of spices because I cook at home and make all my own spice blends. I do try to buy the cheapest brands I can find but living in the country doesn’t make it the easiest.
I buy the smaller sizes except my garlic powder and cinnamon, those are 2 of my most used spices. If I could find a cumin in the large size too I would get that but, I shop mostly at Grocery Outlet
Happy Easter Momma and Tawra sister. Greetings from India. I cook every thing from scratch. i will make spice powders by myself getting raw materials from the market
LOL! I find that I use about 5 or 6 spices a lot and I grow some of them. I use garlic (should grow), cilantro, onion, oregano, parsley, thyme, dill, I think that's it. I grow and dehydrate all but garlic. I need to do garlic but never buy it at the right time. I love the cookbook! I have stopped buying seasoning salt, taco seasoning and Cajun seasoning. I make the DOAD version. I have saved so much money because I have learned how to cook from scratch! I made gravy for our roast beef the other day with flour, and a little bit of roast juice. Thank you for showing me how to do that!
Cleaning out my cupboards i threw away SO MANY spices, some years back, and said i would never do that again. I buy three that have a combination of spices. I have a favourite tumeric Indian mix, a favourite steak spice mix, a favourite Moroccan mix. I found brands i like so these are tried and tested and i have used them for many years now. In addition, i use smokey paprika, cinnamon, black pepper, parsley, oregano, and garlic salt. These are my most used at the moment. That makes 9 for me. I can make a variety of meals throughout the week just using these. If i never had an extra spice i would still be happy. I may have gotten set on my ways or im not trying to do more than i need to anymore.
The 3 additional Dining on a Dime cookbooks I bought for gifts with the Mother's Day sale! Thank you. I can't wait to give them as gifts. I know they will enjoy them as much as I do. I even enjoy reading it as a "story" book. Can't wait for the new book to come out!! Thank you.
Agree! Great information. I’ve seen supposedly frugal folks with meal plans using expensive spices with recipes that require too many ingredients cooking like this the entire week. Then they wonder why they’re broke.
I need to clean out my spice cabinet. Too many spices and blended spices that I rarely use. I love using Italian Seasoning,Garlic powder,Onion powder, cinnamon, salt &pepper of course. That's really about it. My spice cabinet is full,I could use the extra space for my baking ingredients.
Keeping it simple is key. For guacamole i just have the avocados, a healthy helping of dehydrated onions, lemon juice and salt. I ALWAYS get compliments saying it's the best! And I have to agree!😄
Baking from scratch is only cheap if you use basic recipes. I always look for 5 or less ingredients in whatever recipe I use. And you are right, too many spices and herbs take away from the taste of the food. Going to check out your website now 😃
Another great video ladies....I buy a lot of my spices at the Dollar Tree. I also by extracts at Walmart (they actually have Watkins, although I don't recall how much they were.) Have a Blessed day, and Best Wishes for a Happy Easter for your families.
I also use just the basic spices. I buy Italian seasoning to replace many spices for spaghetti sauce, etc. Growing two or three plants on the windowsill helps cut down the cost of buying fresh herbs. Like to buy real vanilla though but try and get on sale.
I have spices in smaller amounts in my kitchen, but in my pantry I have larger amounts vacuumed sealed. I do not have more than ten however. My favorite are black peppercorns, pink Himalayan salt and sage. I cannot have Thanksgiving without my sage. Yall have a blessed Easter.
My family knows that fun spices are something that I love for birthday and holiday gifts, and they get a return on their investment because I use the spices to cook for them!
I find Ms.Dash, Tony Chachere’s Creole seasoning, a plain Italian Blend, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder pretty much cover all my needs. I get all my seasonings from the Dollar Tree or Aldi. They are $1.00 and last me a while.
I need to purge my spices😬 This video has made me realize that I only use garlic and onion powders, cinnamon, and oregano on a daily basis. The rest is used a few times a year. I grow my own basil and parsley and sometimes cilantro. No one complains about my cooking either 😉
Carrie LeRoy I love the bulk section! Not only is it cheaper per ounce, but you can purchase the exact amount needed. For example, I buy mustard seed and celery seed for homemade pickles just once a year. Buying just what I need=no waste!
You both look lovely. I have quite a few spices but I've bought them over a period of time and I always buy the smaller sizes. I use Italian Seasoning which is a blend of rosemary, thyme, basil oregano and sage for most of my cooking. When I use my slow cooker for chicken, I always add salsa. You're right! It has the onions, tomatoes and peppers for flavoring and it's cheaper than buying that and having to chop.
I look at recipes now. And tweak it to fit my budget my life. And my tummy bc I have stomach issues. And so far. I am ok. Baking from scratch? I read somewhere in the internet they suggested to take a boxes cake mix and sift it and it will taste homemade like.
I save $ for guacamole by just adding onion & garlic powder, salt and pepper all to taste. Easy peasy. Love your Dining on a dime cook book! Just made your oatmeal cookies and they were a hit!
I remember about 8 yrs ago my sister in law took me to Sams and i had a list of the prices from walmart so i could price check flour, beans, spices, and even detergents. All of my prices from my walmart were cheaper than the bulk. I could not believe it. I did not by a thing that day.
I only buy in bulk what I use a lot of such as garlic, paprika, cumin, chili powder, cinnamon, smoked paprika, and dried onions when I find them at my discount grocery store. With these I make a 20x mix of taco seasoning which last less than a year but is good for a year, the Sticky chicken rub, seasoning salt and a couple of other things. I buy ginger, cloves, nutmeg in small qualities because I use them less. I make all my seasoning mixes including my onion soup mix and ranch dressing. I am learning more about portion for everyone and am I am finding that is I make one or two extra serving everyone is satisfied including my large eaters.
I use salt, pepper, oregano, garlic powder, I use real onions always, I love cummin.. I buy a yellow powder, that you get at the Latin stores, for yellow rice, to make arroz con pollo, paella. Love to cook, but not very complicated things.
I am really excited to get ur gluten free cookbook. I'm hoping I can get it today. I am not sure if we have issues with gluten. But. I am trying very hard to eat healthier. And tweak our diet. And save money too.
I just cleaned out my spice cabinet 2 days ago...I was a spice hoarder...I cut way down and it makes me feel less overwhelmed with the idea of cooking when I open my cabinet.
My mom always used to put three chocolate chips in each cookie as she didn’t have much money. Seemed fine to us. As far as spices I keep the same ones Jill mentioned as just never saw the need for a lot that will get stale anyway. Basically I use whatever I have on hand. For people that do use different ones I think Sprouts Market is good because you’re buying it loose and you can pick up very small amounts.
Aldi recently raised prices on spices, while shrinking the packages size, which is a real bummer. Their Burman hot sauce is the same size, but in a new package, and the price jumped from .85 to $1.99, which is REALLY a bummer as we use it often.
Also--my husband calls my soups, chilis, and casseroles "du jour" because I'm forever using up what's in the fridge, so I never make the same thing twice!
The only thing I buy in a bigger container is taco seasoning. Even my family of three goes through one of these in a few months before it loses its flavor. I so agree. You don't need a cupboard full of spices.
Big Lots is also good for spices. The containers are a good size and they all cost a dollar. I LOVE the spice recipes in DOAD. I've had to remake a few times and there's nothing bad in them, they're pure.
I use the same spices for everything. We eat. I will say we have added Mrs dash. But only one flavor. The garlic herb one. I buy from Wal-Mart or the dollar tree for my spices. I wanted to get a container of the herb Dr province spices. But a small container is just crazy high in price I looked up the dif spices in that container. And I was able to get the Italian blend bottle from Wal-Mart. It's 5 of the 7 spices of the herb Dr province. It doesn't have fennel and tarragon. Well. For what I pay ($1) verses ($8 or more) I can deal with it. My meats fish stews still taste awesome
Good hints was usual I have a voice in my head now 'you don't have to eat that much' but, back to the basics -Dad wouldn't eat mixes, he said it was like having a bite of the wind, no body, so we complied with his wishes, however, when I started working in the factory, and help with the farm, I was walking dead on my feet, so I did cheat, I put an extra egg and flour in a cake mix to give it 'body' and Dad ate it like it was homemade, no complaints
I don't like making recipes that have more than 5 ingredients anymore. The simpler, the better, the faster. And, sometimes all you need is a little salt and pepper. In my area, I've found that it is cheaper to buy seasonings in bulk at Winco rather than anywhere else. Plus, I only get what I need and will fit in my container, which will cost me about $0.50-$0.80. I've also started growing and drying my own herbs. I'm not the best gardener and herbs are fairly simple.
My spices that I use besides salt and pepper are thyme, oregano, minced garlic, onion powder, or Italian seasoning that has the blend of all of these spices, and paprika if I’m making deviled eggs. I would love to know who cuts Jill’s hair.
I have just received your cookbook. I am going to try some of the recipes, but I live in Norway, and I have never heard of "shortening"? Can I use margarine instead? Same thing with "buttermilk", can I use regular milk? Thank you.
Our thrift stores are charging more for clothing than ever. It is cheaper to shop at Walmart. I don't use a lot of spices but I would add cumin to yur list

I keep at least 30 spices and use them all! I make shake and bake, meat rubs, pouktey seasoning, etc etc. I rarely throw them out. Buy spices you use.

I buy spices in the Spanish food section. Always cheap and interesting flavors. I've cut down on the amount of spices by doing this.
Bon Pearson never thought if that, thank you!
love anytime mama Jill is on!

Hello from Australia ☀️☀️
"Pinterest is from Satan". Ha, ha, ha! I hear ya, Tawra! I feel that way about HGTV and the food network and... 😂😂😂
Agree!
Pinterest and and HGTV I love but resent at the same time. It can make you question your contentment which unchecked can be harmful. Appreciate what you have and give thanks. Making sacrifices is hard, but you can do it. 🙂
I do the same thing with adding salsa to my guacamole when I make it.
Tawra, I use salsa, too! With fibromyalgia, I don't want to chop up vegetables when I can take a tasty shortcut.
We are so lucky! My husband has a friend who works for a spice company and he can bring home extra spices for free and he doesn't use them very much, so he trades my husband repairs on his mowers and other things for spices! So we are blessed with a lot of good spices for free!
Sweet!👍

Or another basic seasoning I do is squeeze some lime and add salt...
Last night I made rice with some oil and put my Knorr bullion on it. Added canned green beans on the side, and my family said it was delicious!!
Because of you all, I started using garlic powder and onion powder! A savings for sure!!
Wonderful!
My favorite is seafood sauce. I use ketchup and horseradish. Beats buying actual seafood sauce and I feel it tastes better.
We call that cocktail sauce here...and you make it how most restaurants make it here! You can add a squeeze of lemon if you have any. Tasty!😍
I used to make that and we would eat in on homemade french fries because we couldn't afford seafood!☺
@@YeshuaKingMessiah add ketsup and you have thousand island dressing.
Winco Foods has spices in the Bulk Foods section. They are really inexpensive and you can buy a small amount.
if you have room in your freezer, pop the spices in there.
I have been using up my spices and really seeing what I use. If a recipe calls for something I don't have, I look to see what I have that I can substitute. I love your cookbook, and have used it to change up my meals in the rotation. Happy Easter to you and your family.

Cindy Colston I love grocery outlet, miss it since moving to Florida, the closes store to it is Aldi's... doesn't compare to grocery outlet tho...
Super video! I agree with limiting spices...makes life easier!

Ashamed to admit, but I've had potatoes "sprout" before cooking them. I put them in my garden and in about 6 months I have several more potatoes!!!
LOL! I've got one sitting on the counter today that's going into the garden. :-)

I cook from scratch because I know what is in my dishes :)
o.s job lot or dollar tree are a great place to buy spices also
My family knows that fun spices are something that I love for birthday and holiday gifts, and they get a return on their investment because I use the spices to cook for them!
You are so correct! I use mostly just salt and pepper.
Same here, my husband is not really a spice person, just salt and pepper is good to him
I use bay leaves, from the tree I have in a pot. Grow herbs you can dry your own so you're not spending money on those.
Love Jills pretty pink nails 😊😊 , jill I do the same with spices , only have 4 .
I have no idea what people do with a ton of spices. I only have 5-7 spices as well; my main one is dill weed - LOVE dill weed on almost anything!!
Boy you hit on a topic that I can relate. Spices are sooooo expensive!!! I go for the 10 for 10$ spices or 77 cents a piece.
I buy spices “as needed” in the bulk section of my Fred Meyer and its penny’s! Also, the dollar store and Trader Joe’s.
Old vitmins or powders ie) greens can be composted or put in the garden and you still get benefit
Rural King is a cheap place to get spices as well if you have one in the area, last time I checked they were .89 cents 😊
You all are genuine awesome family!!! I have learned a lot and love your show!! Keep. Up your all's wise advice. God bless you all!!!!!
I look at recipes now. And tweak it to fit my budget my life. And my tummy bc I have stomach issues. And so far. I am ok. Baking from scratch? I read somewhere in the internet they suggested to take a boxes cake mix and sift it and it will taste homemade like.
Keep your food simple so your life can be exciting 😎
I also started using bulk nation because I can just buy tiny bits at a time that will be used before they go bad rather than whole containers.
I use salt, pepper, oregano, garlic powder, I use real onions always, I love cummin.. I buy a yellow powder, that you get at the Latin stores, for yellow rice, to make arroz con pollo, paella. Love to cook, but not very complicated things.
The yellow powder is probably tumeric
Sazón
Polonia Rosa Carrasquillo . Exacto. Es que ya no vivo en EEUU, y se me habia olvidado el nombre de este polvito maravilloso. Gracias!!!
I am really excited to get ur gluten free cookbook. I'm hoping I can get it today. I am not sure if we have issues with gluten. But. I am trying very hard to eat healthier. And tweak our diet. And save money too.
For my guacamole I just sprinkle in garlic salt to taste. The garlic salt with or without parsley flakes.
I was so hoping this was on Kindle. 😔 Oh nevermind there’s an ebook. That’s the ticket! 👍
Great video ladies!sage advice!
All I put in my guacamole is avocado and lemon pepper... Delicious!
Baking from scratch is the only way I can get low sodium foods. There just not cake mixes without sodium laden ingredients.
You can go to the Dollar Tree to get some spices to
Good hints was usual I have a voice in my head now 'you don't have to eat that much'
but, back to the basics -Dad wouldn't eat mixes, he said it was like having a bite of the wind, no body, so we complied with his wishes, however, when I started working in the factory, and help with the farm, I was walking dead on my feet, so I did cheat, I put an extra egg and flour in a cake mix to give it 'body' and Dad ate it like it was homemade, no complaints
Quacamole tips were great. tbh i could just smash a fresh avacado and that's good enough, but i do like tomato and serano in it
I really enjoy your videos.
My spices that I use besides salt and pepper are thyme, oregano, minced garlic, onion powder, or Italian seasoning that has the blend of all of these spices, and paprika if I’m making deviled eggs. I would love to know who cuts Jill’s hair.
She goes to the beauty school or Tawra cuts it. Here is a video ua-cam.com/video/igR6ENLKBvU/v-deo.html
99 cent only store is good for spices too and Hispanic products.
My guacamole is avocado, not a lot of garlic powder, and salt and every now and then cilantro. That's it.
I have just received your cookbook. I am going to try some of the recipes, but I live in Norway, and I have never heard of "shortening"? Can I use margarine instead? Same thing with "buttermilk", can I use regular milk? Thank you.
Yes you could use margarine or butter. For buttermilk, 1 cup milk + 1 Tbsp. vinegar or lemon juice would work for buttermilk.
@@LivingOnADime Thank you :-)
Our thrift stores are charging more for clothing than ever. It is cheaper to shop at Walmart. I don't use a lot of spices but I would add cumin to yur list
