I live in the suburbs of Seattle, one of the most expensive places in the country, and I routinely feed a family of two adults for $30 to $40 per week. It can be done. $15 to $20 per person per week is great when we can easily spend that much on one trip to McDonald's for the two of us. If you follow their advice, shop sales, use what you have, use discount stores, and have half a plan you can cut your grocery bill. Thanks Jill and Tawra for all you do.
Tawra and Jill some people do not want to prepare. You want to be aware of what you are spending on food. My question is that people who are making excuses are not listening to what you are saying, they are trying to get you to accept what they are telling you. Ignore them because you know what you are doing really work.
Hard times are ahead for this country, better to learn to budget now. I live in Calif. I was able to get canned tuna for .49 cents a can, And pork shoulder for 1.29. which I cut up for smaller roasts and cut up small pieces for soup and stir fry.
Thank you Tawra & Jill for these great videos, I am learning so much from you guys! I live in Southern California & I am able to find great stock-up prices here. This week at Vons I found boneless, skinless chicken breasts for $1.39/lb. The limit is 10 lbs so I will be buying that much to freeze. Also Land O' Lakes butter for $2.49 with a limit of 2. That is the cheapest I've seen it since last Fall so I will get 2 & freeze them. Aldi has asparagus for 79 cents per 16 oz pkg & a 10 lb bag of Russet potatoes for $1.49, 2 more things I will stock up on. Looking forward to the next video, thank you again for helping all of us save money! 😊
So true! I'm doing a quasi-Paleo/Keto diet and am spending a LOT less than when I got whatever I wanted, which was 99% frozen dinners. Have also lost 35 lbs. and counting. Thank you for tips on how to look for good prices. :) God bless you both.
when I had a very limited income I had to give up eating meat - I ate more beans, made soups and learned to make bread. To have a decent salad I would by one from Wendy's then extend it with a small head of lettuce. I couldn't afford to buy carrots, celery, peppers and tomatoes but these were in the salad and they would even include an extra dressing pack so I didn't need to buy that either. If someone offered me garden veggies I took everything - what I couldn't use I would share with friends. If I was at a store where they had a limit on items I was not and still am not above taking my groceries to my car, putting on a sweater and going back to purchase more, I just make sure I don't go to the same check out. I do wish I had the knowledge Tawra and Jill provide years earlier, I have learned so much from them.
Don't be so busy that you fail to look at the ads each week! Plan to look at the weekly sales ad each week, plan meals around those foods. Plan one day of the week to do this and it will help tremendously. Once I was out of work for several months and we only ate foods centered around the good sales.
At times, I can buy chicken leg/thigh quarters for 39 cents/lb at my local Save-A-Lot, but it only comes FROZEN in 10 lb. bags. It is hard to separate pieces when frozen, and since you shouldn't thaw and refreeze, I thaw it out, cut it up into individual pieces, and cook the whole batch, then freeze the cooked pieces. Thanks for your shows about how to eat cheaply and especially for eating proper serving sizes! I looked up the food pyramid, and it's really been helping me eat less!
I make a chicken vegetable soup, which I add all my left over vegetable, such as two medium potatoes, one or two carrots, two stalks of celery, a little froEn peas, corn or whatever I have. If I have zuchinni. In they go, etc. Etc., , I add two or three soup spoons full of polenta, to make the broth a little less liquidy and one half chicken breast, which then I shred,. If someone is VERY hungry, I break an egg in their plate before I add the boiling soup. Boy do I love that soup. When I serve, I add a little chopped cilantro on top. Really, the solution is to think before you buy your food and think before you cook. You can really make your food stretch a lot, and using the recioes of Living on a Dime..... no more excuses.
I live in Central Florida. My prices look higher on the two items that were on sale, but I'm now eating less and healthier (than frozen dinners) so I'm still saving money. The 8 oz. size of Kerry Gold Irish butter was on sale 2 for $6.00 BUT one of them lasts for close to six months. I froze one so the $6.00 is approximately my yearly expenditure on that item. The sale I was most excited about was Nellie's (brown) eggs which were $2.00/dozen. Yes, I can get eggs a lot cheaper (and I do stock up on less expensive eggs when I go to Aldi's) but, again, I'm eating better than before for less money. The regular price on the eggs are 4.99 - I don't buy eggs at that price - not completely nuts...lol. Eggs are my main protein so whatever I spend for them would be akin to buying meat and, like your chicken example, it's amazing how many ways there are to prepare eggs.
I live in Oregon city Oregon. I just looked at the ads not impressed with any of the sales. Even the ones at our restaurant supply store aren't that great. Hopefully this week they will be. Our grocery prices aren't really that bad. Can't complain about it. 💛
Oh my gosh, I was so happy to jear you say that abour hello fresh. I think people are out of their minds for thinking it's a good deal. I've had people bash me on face book for speaking out about it. We made a beautiful Easter dinner of pork roast, mashed potatoes and gravy and fresh green beans with bacon. We will eat 4 dinners for 3 people. Adding it all up we spent about 12.00. So that's only 1.00 per meal per person. It was fantastic. Gkad I'm not the only one who thinks hello fresh is a waste of money.
Speaking of driving to a grocery store, the one that is furthest away from me is Aldi. We make a trip there once a month and do as much in town as I can so I don't have to spend more money on gas.
You tried ladies, you tried. I admire your passion to help others. I will use catalogues in future. I do need to save, I really do. There's going to be a day I'll need to be more frugal with food; other things I can save so much money...but my food shopping needs a major overhaul. I'm also eating more vegetaran meals these days. Do you ladies ever think about releasing a vegetaran cookbook. Id be your first buyer. I've discovered how delicious these ingredients are. I can buy a can of most beans, even organic, for less than $1.💗💗💗💗💗
what people don't realize is shop on holiday weeks, Easter, baking supplies, I got 4 pound Domino sugar 99 cents, 5 lb flour .99 cents hormel spiral ham 99 cents a pound.baking goods go on sale at Christmas time too. I stock up on mayo and Mircle whip, and ketsup durning the summer.
We live 45 mins from the nearest store here in Canada we have a family of 6 with 4 homeschooled kids. We spend 450-500 a month for groceries and diapers.
Can I ask where you are in Canada? Also, exactly which stores you shop at? How old are your kids? Do you have a vegetable garden or fruit trees? Do family members snack? Do you coupon alot? Not interested in knowing so I can criticize. Just truly curious bc we are a family of 5 (2 adults, 2 adult kids, 1 teenager). All of us are very active. BIG eaters but slim. I cannot get my grocery bills below $900/month. We eat out, maybe 2X/yr. No store coffees. I make almost everything from scratch. The only thing left to eliminate would be nuts/seeds. Since debt is not an issue, I haven't eliminated them. But, I'm always curious what others' lifestyles are when they say they are under $500/mo in Canada. Thanks.
@@amandazplace5663 I am in rural Ontario, 30min from the nearest Foodland. We only have chickens and we do have a large garden ,that produces well and I can put away some canning from it .We are 4 people, 3 adults, 1 teen. We eat like kings, for about 400-500/mth. I drive 2 hrs once a month to nearest large city, to Food Basic, No frills and Costco and stock up on meat, some dairy and fillers (rice, oats, cereal, butter, fruits, veggies , breads).Salewhale app helps a lot. We cook from scratch. The 500 includes toiletries.
I live in Saskatchewan. My kids snack almost all day sometimes it seems. We will have a garden this year but didn’t last. My area of Saskatchewan has a pretty low cost of living. I shop mostly at no frills and Walmart or superstore. My kids are 9,5,3,2 the two littlest are in diapers still. I shop flyers if it’s not on sale we don’t get it usually. Coupon sometimes. I stock up when I can.
I live in Oregon, but I have spent two weeks in Palm Springs, California on vacation and we shopped at Walmart, Ralph, and Stater Brothers and the prices were not that much different from the prices were I live in Oregon. We would just go to the store that had the best prices for what we needed to buy.
From Charlestown, Indiana.. Grapes .99 lb, chicken thighs .79 lb, ground beef 1.79 lb. I scored bell peppers on clearance..3 for .99. And they were 👌 perfect. I bought all they had😁
I get what you mean. You have to know and understand unit price and how to maximize cost savings wothout losing house space. Also, that club store jar of PB might have the lowest unit price, but if you can't eat it in a reasonable amount of time or if you don't have the pantry space to store it, it's not a good deal for you. For example, I have 2 toddlers that like peanut butter. My sister has 5 kids, almost all of them are in school (her youngest is a few months older than my oldest). She has to get the big jar because they will go through one in a few weeks and therefore it's a good deal for her. My family will go through a much smaller jar in a month. You have to buy what works for YOUR family situation.
Sticking with the peanut butter thing, I had a friend that lived alone and was trying to lose weight. It was better for her to spend more on the single serving packs of peanut butter rather than having the temptation of an entire jar. So once in a while she buys that to eat with Apple slices, but she PLANS for that, at;Dr than impulsively buying it at every shopping trip.
I just got your cook book this month and love how simple the recipes are!! It’s the first cookbook EVER that I actually WANT to use! So this week I got a few sale items-we live in Montana. 5lb potatoes 89 cents, eggs 79 cents, strawberries $2.50, rotisserie chickens $6.99 which will give me numerous meals, I made quick enchiladas with it last night, and will probably do chicken and dumplings as well. used some of the potatoes to meal prep a big batch of hamburger stew and some breakfast burritos for my husband to grab from the freezer and quickly heat up in the morning instead of paying $4 at the coffee place. This is the first month buckling down and using your tips and the first time not going over budget. My goal next month is to reduce our grocery budget by $100.
Love these videos! I found an older book called The Pink Ribbon Diet, and it is a common sense eating plan. Highly recommend it, and it easily adapts to work around my food allergies including gluten and dairy. Plus, my food bill has gone down quite a bit especially since eliminating snacks, reducing meat consumption and overall portion sizes.
Yesterday was Easter Sunday so we have leftovers from a meal at my parents house (easily 2 dinners + 2-3 lunches) and that was free! But I have boneless skinless chicken breast that I got for 1.59 per pound (we stocked up) and will do something with for the other meals. I also buy Pre-made (gasp) turkey meat balls but they are 2.75 for 26 meatballs and last us for about 3 dinners. They are usually 8.99 not on sale but we buy a ton when they go on sale bc everyone loves them. I think what people don’t understand is that this is not a punishment, spending less is actually rewarding. Most of the people watching your show should realize they can just take what works for them, and use those tips. I also think that it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. If you spend $5 on most of your dinner meals you can still enjoy steak here and there (and it will taste better because it really is a treat and not meant to be eaten every night). This is just some of what I’ve learned from you guys! Embrace the challenge of being frugal! It is so rewarding! Ps I’m from Rockland County NY just about 45 minutes from Manhattan. Suburban area. I shop at aldi and shop rite.
Shopping only once a month saves money because you learn to use what's available in your pantry and freezer. I spent $11.35 on groceries in February because the roads were terrible so I stayed home. I keep shelf stable milk on-hand. I'm a widow living alone but did the same when dh was still living.
Also with Milk... just fyi... we water ours down. We dont like milk, but its necessary for things like shakes and cereal. (Shakes re weight loss). And usually i just use powedered milk. He's lactose intolerant and let me tell you, we've tried every milk out there, incl A2 (except oat milk yet) and nothing works for him. so watering down is helpful, and money saving too.
When chicken goes down to $1.99lb which is the lowest I've seen I try to buy as much as I can. What really bothers me is when it goes that low in price they sometimes have a limit of two so it's hard to stock up. You do give great tips and advice though. Even though I'll never be able to spend that little on groceries here the whole point is that following your tips is still saving us a ton of money. Now instead of spending $1300 per month we're able to easily get by on $800.
I live in a larger city and when the stores around here do that I just go to different locations and get my two at each or make multiple trips to the same store.
Thank you for doing this series. It can be done and your cookbook is great, simple and thrifty meals. Going to retire in the not to distant future and this info is very well received by me!
Anything that's in a box you can make from scratch. I have done it! And it tastes better! Promise You That! I'm always an add shopper to get frugal deals! Davenport, Iowa has good deals. Plus Iowa don't charge tax on most foods.
And using any coupons you can that might actually make the cost LESS for the purchase, is great. You can even write the manufacturer online and get free coupons. its great
You are so right. People are not willing to do it. I have started shopping around and writing down prices. I WANT to save money of food because that is where I can save! You NEED to be willing to look at other stores. My Kroger is awesome but I have started to see that Walmart or Aldi are selling items cheaper. Hello fresh is a joke!! I made a video on that. It is NOT worth it. Jill is right, choose what you have. If beef is too much have chicken all week. I buy sales and freeze. I have cheap beef, chicken, and pork in the freezer. We eat well on "cheap". I could go on... Kroger butter is $2.99lb. This week I went to Aldi and got their brand butter for $1.99lb. I don't get that very often. I live in Central IL.
I just made the pancake recipe, it’s amazing!!! So fluffy!!! I used unsweetened vanilla almond milk and applesauce over oil. Everything I already had handy :)
I love lamb but it’s always super expensive so I took advantage of a $4.99/lb sale and bought a roast to stick in the freezer. Asparagus was 99 cents/lb so I picked that up! No other great deals this week so that was it - plenty in my pantry to work with. I’m in the Virginia Beach area.
Even if you spend slightly more in NYC if these tips save you 50% or more then it's a win in my book. I live in a cheap area it's like an 86 or 89 on the index 100 is U.S. average a place like l.a. or NYC is 300 and even then theirs videos and websites showing people eating on .99 or cheaper per lb of chicken or pork etc. Their is always something you can do just got to make it work for you. I can only eat certain foods at least while I am alone because of choking hazards but I eat a lot of things at my sisters or day program but I do eat on the cheap. I have family members that live in the same area that feed 2 or 3 people and spend $500 or more per month because they refuse to shop Aldis or use generic. Another cousin feeds 5 or 6 people for far less every month. Edit:300 means roughly 3x the price of average u.s. city or town.
I live in LA and can vouch that we have excellent prices available to our family! And amazing produce! We are so fortunate and I agree, if you’re willing to do the work, you can live like a king for very little money. My children are quite spoiled. 😊
On sale this week in Baton Rouge, La near me is ham 97 cents a pound, boneless skinless chicken breast 97 cents a pound, hamburger/hotdog buns 97 cents, 2 liter coke, Pepsi, 7 up 97 cents although I don't buy these, canned vegetables 49 cents, butter $2.69 a pound. That is just one store about a mile from my house.
I'm glad you mentioned the delivery of food that you have to COOK !! people give me a break...I thought buying water was ridiculous, walmart will deliver food to you. Heck I'll deliver food to you for that price !!!
I forgot to tell you my adult kids came to visit this Easter, my hubby sent them home with beef steaks he got on sale instead of chocolate lol I made a swiss roll with lots of chocolate icing.
We were gifted a couple of boxes from 2 different companies. One of the boxes took so much prep and cook time I nearly threw it out. I always question the testimonials that rave about how much money they save. Only if you order take out or go to a restaurant every day.
We sometimes stock up by shopping when Meijer has their buy 10 get the 11 item free. It was started in Michigan but it's in different states now. Even with the sales sometimes it's still cheaper to shop at Walmart.
In Salem, Ohio, this week, chicken thighs .99 lb, got 4 family size packs; at the same store I got bacon (from the deli) for 2.99 lb. At aldis, 1 lb butter for 1.99 (limit 6, so I will make 3 more trips for more).
yes I have to admit I listen to you very often and I love your advise and well I don't do to bad. I do do coupons and well the other day I walked out of the store with 12 jars of Jiff peanut butter, 6 Smithfield ham steaks and 2 packs of eckridge smoked sausage for around 11 $..............I do do bout half your idea and with that and coupons I do pretty well.............. .
You know there is a down side to eating inexpensively? I don't get a free turkey at Thanksgiving or other holidays because I seldom spend enough in their time frame to qualify! But then I stock up the next week because they are cheap. Last week I wanted to take advantage of the free 5 pound box of Matzoh for Passover, but that meant spending $50 in a trip. It's a decent savings, luckily the store had enough items on sale to make it, and I got a my second box free because I had another coupon and ran into someone I knew doing Easter shopping with a cart full. She just added it to her cart. We really don't eat 10 pounds of Matzo, but we eat a bunch and one of my kids always leaves boxes at work and others eat them (not a problem if they are free ;) ).
I know I am late in replying but tomorrow I am getting chuck roast for 3.49/lb and ground beef for 1.89/lb and also leg quarters for 3,99 for 10 lbs. I also plan my meals around what is on sale. I am from Ga
British Columbia Canada here 🥰 I flyer shop - only buy sales. Use what I have.. etc.. I’ve saved a lot of money over the past couple months and I am single mother of two kids. you can get really good deals here, you just have to know your prices and flyer shop... some prices just truly do suck though haha
In my town right outside Nashville Tn. This store has a huge truckload meat sale twice a year. Just got hamburger 1.88 a pound, pork Butt .98 a pound, chicken breasts .68 a pound. Boneless pork chops 119 a pound. I have an upright freezer and I just spent 59.00 and have enough meat for a year.
We buy chicken marked down because the expiration date is the next day and put it right into the freezer. We can eat even chicken breasts for less than $5.00 a package that feeds the three of us with some left. Chicken thighs also can be pretty cheap. I got some boneless thighs at the grocery store due to the expiration date and like $3.00 that would make us two meals! It can be done. We quit buying paper plates 6 months ago and decided it was cheaper just to wash dishes. We were going through a couple packages per month and they aren't cheap. Loving these videos with your mom! We are still buying paper towels but only buy them when they are 2/$1.00 and trying to limit using them.
I live in So Cal and have always based our weekly menu off of what was on sale! We are empty nesters now and I average $50 a week for hubby and I and I feel really good about that. If we want steak we wait until it's on sale and we usually share 1 (I'm not a big steak eater so it works for us). It's easy enough to look at ads and plan a menu and write up a list. I know we are eating better now than we ever have and I'm spending less money!
My target price for meat is $2/lb or less and I have no problem finding that in Georgia. Some may pay more, some less. That's just what my budget will allow. We don't eat a lot of steak but we'll live 😂. If I can't get meat for that price, we don't eat it, plain and simple. It's not hard. Buy what's on sale and build your meal plan around that. I love y'all...your videos keep me encouraged and motivated.
Here is a PS to my comment. I am a daycare worker in IL. I have always thought we are giving kids too much food. They can't eat all that in one sitting. Well, the state health codes changed and we are now giving them less. "Kids are over weigh due to...." No, Kids are over weigh because we were told to give them too much food! I thought of you throughout this "teacher institute day".
I agree so much with this. In study after study Americans both children and adults are eating between 3 and 5 times more than they were in the 50s and 60s and that's why we have so much obesity and diabetes in the U.S. now. France and other countries that don't eat as much and exercise more don't have the obesity or the diabetes rate we do. I started eating less and moving more and not only do I spend less on food but my diabetes is well controlled and I no longer take medication. It is now almost always in the pre diabetic or lower range. I changed my diet more than anything though. Some of it was what I was eating but mostly how much. I eat healthier now and for less I feel better too.
The only bad thing about my area is their are only two grocery stores nearby so not a lot of competition. They both do have good sales sometimes though also the discount grocery in the area has good sales from time to time just depends on what the stores in the area (30 minute or so radius) overstocked on. The one nearest where I live when it has good sales sadly it almost has either 4 or 6 sometimes even 2 as a limit. It almost has to though because everyone in the area comes for those sales. I usually get the limit or if something is bogo free and it's something I rarely buy since at this store it's considered half off I do sometimes buy 1 of it. So like sometimes a $3.49 bag of chips goes on sale and so it's $1.75 because they usually do charge the extra penny. The only exceptions is 3/$1 items it's usually the 2nd item that is the extra penny. If they have bogo for potatoes though i always buy 2 bags. I just about live on potatoes and eggs when I'm home. I also get chicken when it's on sale. They rarely have produce officially on sale but they have a cart for items that is about to be out of date. This is usually where I buy things like oranges and grapes because you can get 7 or 8 oranges sometimes for $1 or a little over. They have always been good some of the stuff I've frozen or split with friend or family because it was more than I would use in the immediate future. It has been more difficult since my SNAP has went down to $15/month. I take leftovers from my day program on days when we have bigger meals. I also go to a food bank a lot more often. I hate to but imo that's what it's for. I didn't go near as often when I got almost 3x the amount of stamps. I will probably be going almost every month. I don't go to any churches in the area or anything though. Potatoes are like $4.99 10lbs here. About an hour away it's more like $1.99 10 lbs. It's still not that bad. I try to limit portions though because I have pcos and am diabetic it's controlled with diet and exercise though and I want to keep it that way. I also want to maintain my weight loss.
from NC shank ham for .77 lb limit 2.......I bought two and my son bought 2 thats a whole lot of meals........lol not to mention the bones.............'
Hi, I'm Becky from upstate New York. This weeks sales aren't as good as Easter had great prices on Ham. I did find spiral ham at ALDIS for 85 cents a pound, whole pineapples $1.29. Our other store Price Chopper even had lobster tails $5.99 if you wanted to splurge. They do have 10 for 10 and get 10 cents off your gas.
I live in the Midwest, central Illinois and my prices on eggs and milk are cheap, cheap, cheap. I buy my milk for 1.25 per gallon and eggs for 67 cents at our local Walmart. I get my basics like this along with flour and sugar for the month and then I just add to it with bargains from stores. Ham was on sale this week at our local ValuCheck for 55 cents a pound and I bought canned veggies for 29 cents per can. Like I said before, all depends on my ads, my grocery bill runs about 90 to 130 per month for 2 people.
I got canned veggies at my local Safeway for $.39 and I got chips that are normally $2.99 for $1 (1.99 if you buy 3 and $3 off that when you buy 3 or more, so it equaled $1 each!)
Well, that won't work because I live in rural Australia.....hahahaha!! You can find money saving ways on food no matter where you live. The principles are the same wherever in the world you are! Love your channel x
Just wanted to let you know I saw the video and was on my way to the food 4 less for the 77cents a pound chicken legs and thighs when i got my new weekly sale papers .... I live in Los Angeles ca area (city of Hawthorne) and found this 59 cents a pound legs or leg quarters !! If you look you will find ! Needless to say i bought 5 big packs of chicken today to stock up lol
I like this so much, will be looking for your cookbook. I spend anywhere from 17 to 30 dollars per week for 2 for food. I got 10 pounds of leg quarters for 39 cents a pound. I really do not like the dark meat but it does make good noodles. I have my own recipe for homemade noodles which saves me at least 80 cents per bag of noodles and now I am spoiled..But my problem is I get so much of this I get sick of it...separating and bagging still doesn't I can still like the stuff. I have to learn to buy smaller portions. Those leg quarters were in a 10 pound bag and couldn't get any less. Sigh...
We literally used to go around to all the 10 diff kinds of stores in the area and do spreadsheets on the typical cost of each item of things we buy, from fresh, can, frozen. And we used to stop at those stores on our way home, to save gas, to get the best deals. It's so cute to see hubby looking for best costs, discounts, and also whether coupons are even useful (sometimes they arent) for price
I posted a comment on another channel that I spend $100 a month for a family of 4 and was attacked! LOL Anything is possible...I'm debt free and very frugal now...people need to think and do math
Cooking from scratch, eating leftovers and always eating at home are inexpensive behaviors and attitudes. Purchasing prepared foods at grocery stores like premade chickens and complete dinners are expensive. Eating at restaurants constantly is very expensive yet most people buy groceries, and then end up eating at restaurants throughout the week. Most people also end up throwing out most of the food in their refrigerators on a weekly basis. These are expensive behaviors and attitudes.
I think the key isn't that they can't, it's that they don't WANT to, and Until they have that desire, they will not ever take control of their financial lives. It all Comes back to the heart. I personally don't want to help those who refuse to help themselves, it's a waste of my time and energy and at the end of the day its their business if they experience financial extinction due to their poor choices and refusal to do anything about it.
Candace Brady. It’s been said if you will budget your grocery money and eat at home exclusively for 2-3 months. You could afford a round trip airline ticket to anywhere in the world. Yes that’s how much we was eating out and purchasing frozen food to pop in the oven or microwave.
Thank you for doing a video on meal deliveries. Please include uber eats and companies like that. They up charge the price so high. It is like paying for another meal.
Oh geez... My kids were both sick a few months ago and I was ordering through the app. It was like over $25 a pop and we were doing it multiple times a day... Service fees were $5 to $10, depending on whether it was groceries or food. I'll just stock with picking it up myself. Although I will say doing the pick up yourself is helpful and would save $$$ if you do a lot of impulse shopping.
I live in Northern California the town is Modesto, California Our store is always having good sells chicken is around 80 cents a pound potatoes $1.25 a bag milk is always a good buy, I'm going to be on my own soon my youngest son is joining the Navy I should be able to live on very little
For any Canadians you can price match at Walmart for the cheeper prices, no excuses, I can’t go to this store or that store. I use there tips and I’ve saved so much money on my grocery bill,
Try living in Norway, talk about expensive food! Hahahah.. A little planning goes a long way. And, after watching you guys, I have reduced my food budget. A normal food budget for a family of 3 (all over 18 years of age) here in Norway is 941usd a month. I have reduced this to about 588usd a month. Can still cut it. So nice to finally have money in my savings account. The biggest category of spending for me is the food, I write a list before I go shopping, numerous times I came home with items I already have. That has stopped now. I check what I have before I go shopping, and try to use up whats in my freezer. I guess before I didn´t care, just shopped what I wanted and complaining of the prices.
We had to make a trip to SE Kansas last week and I got pasta (ronzoni with extra fiber in the yellow box) as well as green giant veggies and campbells cream soup for $.49 each at Dillons, a kroger affiliate, for their $3 off 6 sale. I also found Buotoni pasta in fridge section, regular $4.99, sale for $3.49 then with the $3 off 6 they were $2.99 but they had $1 peelie coupons making them $1.99 each (those will make a special dinner for us).
I actually live in NW Arkansas but my husband will be going back to school in the fall in Kansas, so we have to drive up for some school stuff. I'm thankful for videos like this that help remind me I need to plan and cook at home more often.
I wonder how little your family eats. I feel like that is my struggle. I have big eaters. Hubby is 6'5" and works a manual job. 4 kids 6 and under. We can eat 3lbs of sweet potatoes, half of a roasted chicken and a salad or pot of peas in one meal. I debone the chicken and make a second casserole/soup/chili but that's it. We usually will polish that off in one sitting, maybe one serving left to reheat for lunch later. So for that example even at $1/lb or less for the chicken, and 80c/lb for the sweet potatoes, the 6 of us easily eat well over $1/serving/meal(and actually only 5 because the baby is still nursing).
In Ontario Canada..last week we had 12 pak toilet paper, 6 pak tissues and 6 pak paper towels @ 5.99 ea...less a $6 printable online pdf coupon when you buy all 3 plus 9K in loyalty points which equals $9. So the 3 were $4.31 oop...thats the best deal I've seen for a long time
Oh geeeeeez. So my 83 yo mother has been watching all these meal delivery ads and wondering what they are about. She mentioned Hello Fresh AGAIN the other day. They happened to have a Groupon deal which made the shipment half price...I think it was $24. Don't get excited, folks. She can afford it. I don't know what her fascination with it is, but I suspect it will be more work than she realizes. One and done.....or seldom. :) I think you're right...people don't want to eat different. They think it has to be boneless skinless chicken breast or nothing. 90/10 grassfed burger and shudder at $1.79 a pound tube ground turkey at Walmart. Beans?!?!? Oh no, just no....they don't like beans. I had red lentil burritos the other night.....frankly, I don't think I've eaten lentils twice in my 55 years otherwise. Seasoned them up and, no they are not quite the texture of refried beans, but were good none the less. Its just food and you have to eat what you can afford.
I will admit we are pick eaters and we have allergies. For work we do a lot of networking at different places and are out doing fun things. 90% of the time before we leave I always say grab a water bottle with water, eat and go to the bathroom cause we don’t know what to expect.
I did not need to buy much this week. But I now look at the adds closely and when I do buy on sale I buy more than one. I love all of your tips and it is good to hear them over and over :) It is very encouraging.
Dont think ive ever had an excuse as far as groceries goes..buying good and frugal mostly at the store. Plus buy a lot of store brand food and yellow tag food...NC.
😂😂😂people are so funny...and lazy. Put the TV remote down and get in the kitchen and cook. My mother-in-law is a good cook ,BUT she doesn't think outside the box. She will Buy A $4.99 roasted chicken at Costco, eat one meal, sends 2/3 to us and says they don't like left overs. I take it and make soup, chicken salad all kinds of stuff.
Granmom fixes food fresh, our mom orders pizza chicken wings buy prepared pancakes all convince food, then yells paying money then we don't eat everything she buys, screaming at us doesn't work anymore.

Living On A Dime do you ship to Canada?
I live in the suburbs of Seattle, one of the most expensive places in the country, and I routinely feed a family of two adults for $30 to $40 per week. It can be done. $15 to $20 per person per week is great when we can easily spend that much on one trip to McDonald's for the two of us. If you follow their advice, shop sales, use what you have, use discount stores, and have half a plan you can cut your grocery bill. Thanks Jill and Tawra for all you do.
Found chicken on sale 57 cents a pound last week...I bought 60 pounds.
Wow!
Wow I found it for 59 cents a lb. And got several packs today and am going back on fri to get some more !
We use eggs often for our main protein.
I so agree on the meal deliverys! Why, people!
Brenda Atkinson I know, right?
If I can do it you can to.
@@Truenorth747 thank you for the info! 💖
I think the problem is: Some don’t know what are good prices vs bad prices. Guess we need a list of what is a good price for the basic food items.
Just do a little research it's not really that difficult. The lower the price the better.
Chicken on sale for 88 cents today. I didn’t start buying whole chickens until I started watching you gals. What a SAVINGS!
Cat Lover. True. This week Aldi has spiral ham .95 cents per pound. Our Kroger had land o lakes butter 2 for $5.00.
I found this kind of deal at my local Foodlion store today. So, I bought 3 packages of chicken drumsticks.
On sale this week in Baton Rouge, La near me is ham 97 cents a pound, boneless skinless chicken breast 97 cents a pound, hamburger/hotdog buns 97 cents, 2 liter coke, Pepsi, 7 up 97 cents although I don't buy these, canned vegetables 49 cents,
butter $2.69 a pound.
Agreed! The first time I heard the commercial for that brand I thought, "That's more time than I spend normally on food preparation."
Ive been hitting the butter sale as well. Rock bottom price for me
yes I have to admit I listen to you very often and I love your advise and well I don't do to bad.
I was able to get ham at Aldi for 55 cents/lb I got two big ones. Yaaaaaay
Just left the grocery store here in Boston and got chicken for .77 a pound! Bought 8 of them to precook for a million different recipe options!!!
You are so right!!!
Texas - Ham .88 per pound, brisket 1.88 per pound, eggs .89 per dozen.
Eggs were cheap cheap the week before Easter, I expect chicken will be next! I’m in Lower Alabama LA!
Just wanted to let you know I saw the video and was on my way to the food 4 less for the 77cents a pound chicken legs and thighs when i got my new weekly sale papers ....
I live in Los Angeles ca area (city of Hawthorne) and found this
59 cents a pound legs or leg quarters !!
If you look you will find !
Needless to say i bought 5 big packs of chicken today to stock up lol
💸💸
Sorry wouldn't let me attach a picture of sales ad
It's at
El Super in Los angeles area
Sigh...
Thank you for talking about LA and that exact store.
I was shocked one time we got port tenderloin (roll thing) and we had 2 sides and it turned out to be 39c a meal. I was floored
I posted a comment on another channel that I spend $100 a month for a family of 4 and was attacked! LOL Anything is possible...I'm debt free and very frugal now...people need to think and do math
In my ad this week at the Giant -canned vegetables 49cents, sweet potatoes 69 lb., and Betty Crocker cake mix $1.00. I live 40 miles from Philly,Pa.
Love it when you have a Jill video!!!!
We simply couldn't afford to do it. I would eat breakfast for dinner. Before I order from a delivery service.
I live in Northern California the town is Modesto, California
Our store is always having good sells chicken is around 80 cents a pound potatoes $1.25 a bag milk is always a good buy, I'm going to be on my own soon my youngest son is joining the Navy I should be able to live on very little
For any Canadians you can price match at Walmart for the cheeper prices, no excuses, I can’t go to this store or that store. I use there tips and I’ve saved so much money on my grocery bill,
HUGH FAN OF FLIPP APP. It does the search for you locally for the best grocery deals in and around your area and it's a free app.
If you find places in Hawaii other than commissaries with good deals please share our food is ridiculous. Love your channel.
Btw it's great meat. Not awful at all. Truly great stuff.
Right now I'm living out of my freezer and when someone takes me out to eat I always bring home enough for another meal or two
In Ontario Canada..last week we had 12 pak toilet paper, 6 pak tissues and 6 pak paper towels @ 5.99 ea...less a $6 printable online pdf coupon when you buy all 3 plus 9K in loyalty points which equals $9.
I think you're right...people don't want to eat different.
The problem is common sense just isnt very common anymore lol this is why i'm teaching all of my kids how to budget and meal plan.
Cleaning products and beauty items are premium...meat and produce is comparable to the south
Steak, what is that? LOL Happy Easter
It's the quantity. We eat too much, and it shows.
The little train that could theory... I know I can, I know I can, I know I can .... just sayin people🤗
So no Hello fresh sponsorship videos? Thank God! Lol.
Rural area in California (i.e. Expensive!) - boneless skinless chicken 1.27#!!!
You forgot Seattle!😂
HOW dose Jill go to a restaurant for $6? Do a show on that.I Haven't been out in months:(
She orders an appetizer and water. ~Heidi
You guys are so inspiring!! I have learned a lot from your principles. My husband is finally seeing the light and getting on board.
🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
I like the mom but the daughter is highly annoying
So don't watch. There is no reading to be rude!
Reason *
Granmom fixes food fresh, our mom orders pizza chicken wings buy prepared pancakes all convince food, then yells paying money then we don't eat everything she buys, screaming at us doesn't work anymore.
