Thank you for sharing your skills with us, Mikko! I am using the splicing with a footrope knot to make the loop end of hanging cords for pictures. I unravel the tails & comb them out for a tassel. I'm really pleased with the way they are turning out. Thank you!
Very nice Mikko, and practical too. We have a pair of rescued greyhounds who will be at the end of these leashes when I make them. Perfect, and thank you for this timely tutorial.
Looking forward to giving this a go. The line I have is all one colour so I might need to mark each strand somehow, can already see me spending 4hrs on this!!
I had to come up with this on my own years ago and it’s VERY reassuring that a professional does nearly identically the same thing. Only thing I do differently is a crown knot before I start splicing the hand loop. I can pull everything tighter and keeps the line from idling through and bunching up. (By NO MEANs saying mine or yours is better or worse, just differences).
I have made a few of these. It's a great pattern to follow. My dog likes a slip lead, so instead of the back splice finished with a Matthew Walker, I made a small eye splice, finished with the MW, and pulled the body of the leash though. Works great. I have also used this pattern to finish a monkey's fist heaving line: splicing the ends of the monkey's fist and finishing with a MW, and then adding an eye splice on the other end, finished with a footrope knot. Thanks Mikko! I look forward to getting the line, tool, and kits I ordered.
You're a very talented man it's a bit confusing watching the knots being made but after a while it will all make sense I will have a go when I get the tools and materials 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Happy New Year Mikko I am 81 yrs old and I felt that I was pretty good at tying knots, but I purchased an ipad awhile ago and I was browsing around and I came across knot tying by Mikko Snellman I am amazed and flabbergasted at what I have seen you do and that I am Long way from knowing how to tie knots. I watch your knot tying for about six (6) hours almost every day. Keep up the magneficant work it leaves me in awe every day. Where do you buy all your working tools. And also where to purchase your book.🏡🌲☃️🏘️
I am glad you find the videos useful. I make my own tools and also sell them. Book I haven´t written but am planning on making instructional video for purchase about fancywork.
Is there a simple way to do the math of how much rope you need to make a certain length leash? And to know how much to unravel for the splicing and knots?
No, there isn´t. It all depends on your dimensions of the rope, loop and length of the splice. As rule of thumb for me is the length of finished leash + 1 meter for splices and knots.

@@mikkosnellman When we made an eye-spice in the USN, we would take a back when making the bite (left hand lay) turning right hand to put a little slack in the bite. I may not be explaining it right, if I am I'm sorry.
@@samuelswearingen8435 I think I know what you mean. For practical purposes I also open the lay of the strands a bit but this splice is meant to be more decorative.
Nice! Last year, made a leash with double braid, spliced and all. But, the three strand stuff is so much more nautical. Especially the way you do it, with the marlinespike work and all. Love it! Keep 'em coming!!!

You can tie any kind of stopper knot for decoration. Here I showed just two alternatives. Depending on your rope material it can be a good idea to do one more tuck after the knot and tie whipping before cutting the strands.
incredibly difficult to follow ,, pls slow it down for those that have never done it before ….. hadd to keep pausing the video with hands full of rope :)
The music is as soft and gentle weaving through the strains of time. Your artistry is a beauty from the heart. Thank you so much.

Maravilloso. Gracias y saludos desde Chile 😉
Why not take the strands after the knots are tied and splice them two or more thinning times into the line?
Yes, why not. That would make a neat finish for the splice.
pwopwopow man, great talent think for your movie and your experience.
What type of 3 strand rope is that youre using? Its got a very nice pattern to it

Nice work, you taught me one I didn't know about. But one question, why didn't you put a back twist in the eye-splice?

Wonderful! Any way to bury the ends?
Whipping would be the best way but you can add a crown and tuck back through the knot to stem.
