  • Capoeira Is an acrobatic & striking martial art- disguised as a dance, & with an incredible history.
There are a few origin stories, but the one that captivates me most, is that capoeira was created by African slaves in Brazil in the 1600’s. It’s said that it took on dancing & music in order to train martial arts under the noses of slave owners- & that’s badass!
Have you heard of capoeira before? What do you think about it as a fighting style? I used to think it was super flashy, but not too practical. However, as I study a number of martial arts, & am also a musician, I see that there’s more to capoeira than meets the eye.

Don't cross the legs when you ginga or you'll have terrible balance, it's more like a front stance in karate then step into a horse stance and step back into a front stance with the other leg forward. At any point your stance should be steady, but you can use your momentum to throw kicks or acrobatics

I think what it's lacking is competition where the rule set to winning is similar to that of Boxing and Muay Thai.

Thanks for making this explainer video. But the background music and song were too loud, and it isn't easy to focus on what you are saying and explaining. Unfortunately, I was unable to watch the whole video.

From acrobatic saltos to grass-cutter ground kicks, from feinting-deceiving to the multicultural aspects, capoeira is worshipped not just in Brazil - its home - but nearly everywhere in the world.
Mestre Bimba and Mestre Pastinha had been known as the original founders of this multifaceted art that combines dance, martial arts, gymnastics, breakdancing, African-style singing, and of course, music. The famous musical instrument that looks like a bow--if this did not exist, capoeira would not exist without it--this is the berimbau. The berimbau player plays only a few notes in certain rhythms in the capoeira circle (or "roda") that mainly rules how the "game" (or "jogo") will be played there.
Sometimes, you will see rodas with "no gi" (no uniforms), but traditionally, capoeira schools and groups use uniforms usually in white to represent possibly purity...all the way to the loose capoeira pants. The capoeiristas and its participants usually are in rodas that are like dojos or dojangs---without shoes, but still, the excitement of capoeira lives on.

One of my newest favorite capoeira songs is "Eu Caminhei Meu Mauo" (I have walked my hand), composed by Mestre (or "master") Tamanadua. It has a fast Sao Bento rhythm so it is better for Regional than Angola style of capoeira.

I know someone who's gone deep into it, I still don't really get the appeal, the jenga thing is the most annoying thing to me, the slave training story is awesome but i think it bothers me that it isn't quite dancing and isn't quite fighting just seems like hippy aerobics, i used to love eddie in tekken though, i think i would find it more appealing if i saw real people fighting with it, but yet to see it ever used that way so just seems like doing fake fighting as a dance, kinda feel the same way about it as hardcore fight dancing, i guess they're the same thing actually
