Hi Richard I’ve also got the Radio Shack TRC 1014 that I bought from Tandy in the early 90’s. Mine is the 40 channel version & I’m aware that they brought out an 80 channel version after this. My friend & I used to regularly achieve 5.8 miles on the standard rubber duck antenna to him on his mobile set up which was an Amstrad 901 & K40 mag mount. I’ve only just measured this distance. So completely agree with you that the performance of this handheld on its rubber duck was / is astonishing. I remember in those days, I couldn’t believe it, & repeatedly asked for his location. But the reception went in & out as he drove from my house to his location which was elevated but still across a very built up & industrial location. Yes we used to do our own difficult terrain tests!

No, I have no knowledge of third party accessories. Now this is interesting as we've consistantly had 10 miles range on the supplied rubber duck with this type of radio better than nearly any other set. I'll do a service of one of my own AH27 or RadioShack equivalent model & then we'll do a field test. Richard, G0OJF, UK
Interesting set nice and compact will see how it does on the scratchy corner test.

I'll definitely do one of mine over the next 10 days & then we can do a field test with the bodycam..like we do.

Looking forward to the test
Manged to look at the Amstrad 901 looks like there is a problem with U1 VC0, any common faults to look for please
Check for 6V at pin 18. That's the power supply rail for the PLL.
Richard
@@ukfmcbradioservicingTango21thanks I will keep you updated, Monday I will get a scope on the VCO and look at the chip voltages
I have the same radio I bought from new in the 90s can you recommend a different antenna than the supplied rubber duck which isn’t very good ?
