UK FM CB radio servicing
United Kingdom
Приєднався 9 сер 2013
I run a small electronics business specializing in the repair & servicing of UK (legal FM only) CB radio equipment, aimed at the trade. I also spent about 16 years in professional business 2-way radio. I have heard & read so much rubbish, myths & legends about various CB radio makes & models that I decided to launch this channel. Each model I choose will have a videos made about it. Firstly, servicing the the radio, using where possible manufacturers service manual. The second video is an air-test standardised demonstration, where our test vehicle drives just over six miles away in the "wrong" direction. We have three service benches here all with very different test equipment. Every CB radio that leaves here is spot on with reference to the manufacturers service data. I hope you will enjoy, find fascinating & informative the usually 'trade only' videos that are building up as different sets come in for repair & alignment

This 1988 flagship handheld came in for service. These are 3.5W radios. On this set low power was 250mW. These sets can be run off 13.8V rather than the previous (better) TRC1001 & 1005 models which are 12.5V max.

After servicing this 1983 flagship handheld (3.5W), it was time to test it. As usual, Mr Chippie drove along our 6-mile 'difficult terrain for radio' test route. He stopped at the 5-mile point & we conducted a static test. Low power was 490mW on this set. Our continued thanks to Thunderpole for kindly supplying the T3000 radio we use in the test vehicle at no cost to us. This is the sole reason...

After serving & re-aligning this 1981 radio, I ended up changing all the electrolytic capacitors in the amplifier part of the radio. It was discovered that the receive volume was lower than expected; this provided a complete cure. It was also noted the aerial socket was loose...this was tightened up. A strange thing was noted. On 4W the tx audio is as per the correct deviation. O low power this...

The reference oscillator crystal was deterioated to such an extent that the radio was unacceptably off frequency & I managed to find a working replacement out of a scrap set. Amstrad CB901 CB27/81 UK FM CB radio - On The Air test (Japan version)
It's another set I never seen in the 80's good to see it in nice condition for it's age and will look forward to the scratchy corner test.
Wonder how rare they are, i have one of those,🤔🤔🤔
I wanted to buy another one in good condition, but couldn’t really find one that had been looked after. Ive seen a few with badly corroded battery terminals and snapped antennas though.
I'll be shedding quite a few this year....some I've owbed from new. Richard, G0OJF,UK
The only thing rare about them is finding one that's not got moisture ingress from being used in the rain. Although they work quite well, they are not as good as the previous & more expensive 1983 TRC1005 or 1981 TRC1001. Richard, G0OJF, UK
How come it's not kicking out 4 watts out of the box
No Cb radios ever do, not did they in the past. It's about getting containers through customs at the receiving country. Sample are batch tested by government inspectors, so they are always set on the low side. Richard, G0OJF, UK
Oooh that’s mine 🙂 nice to hear you say it’s in good condition.
You'll be pleased to see/hear it working over our 6-mile 'on the air' test tomorrow then too. Currently editing & processing overnight, hopefully getting published tomorrow by 9AM Richard
@@ukfmcbradioservicingTango21excellent news, thank you Richard.
Hi Richard nice CB Radio
1st comment.,.........and it's been up an hour too..!!
What does the extra filter stage do on an 863 / 5 star?
It's to improve selectivity (bleedover). Though a lot of bleedover is caused by people with dodgy radios transmitting on 3 channels (or more) at a time! The base station version on the Cybernet 134 chassis has two extra stages. I makes no difference to range or clarity, just if you are in a high usage area. Richard, G0OF, UKj
@@ukfmcbradioservicingTango21 That's interesting, I didn't know that. Always assumed that Cybernet 134s were identical in spec, apart from the extra (useless) knobs on the flagship versions.
Why were they so expensive? Not all 40ch handhelds were that price? I can also manage not to bend aerials. So many people push them down from the top!
The nearest competetor was the Harvard 410T/Alba CBH2/Harrier WT2 (same set different badge/case style). The Harvard type sets were £69.99. The TRC1001 was £119.99 & the TC1005 was £139.99. The plastics in the case are light years different in quality...one drop & Harvard is knackered. The Realistic has excellent build quality (Japan), the range boost side panels, crystal filter, sockets for everything including the ext mike. Doing an external mike involves lots of electonic switching. Definitely worth double the price tag. Richard G0OJF, UK
@@ukfmcbradioservicingTango21 I've never heard of range boost panels!
They are metal conductive side panels screwed through the plastic case onto the steel chassis. The users body becomes part of the ground plane & this makes a massive difference to range. Richard
That major 3000 is a fantastic rig one of the best on air test well done
I think the Realistic hand helds were the best hand held CB radios on the market in their day. They were AM here in Australia.
Roger on that. I hope you enjoy the difference between the UK FM system & AM. I also find it intersting to see outwardly the same models on different world markets with totally different innards! Richard, G0OJF, UK
The TRC1005 did very well at all the key points on the scratchy corner test & at five mile point, decent hand held set and with the LCD display with the backlight facility it reminds me of the old digital watches back in the 80's they were that bright if the battery was good you could use them as a torch to see your door lock on a dark night, on that note I've caught up on the videos again and will catch you on the next one 10-10.
Another great result on the Scratchy corner test plus it reminded me of the Mustang CB 1000 with the chameleon style meter.
Excellent all round Scratchy corner test worked well at all the key points.
Nice results on all modes on the scratchy corner test & at five mile point.
Nothing like the Midlands of the past.
I had a PT40, but the oscillator was a bit slow in running, resulting in a noise at the start of the transmission. I tried everything to cure it, but it still did it. So it got thrown aside in disgust. There was a guy I know that worked with transmitters, so I gave it to him to have a look at. It was what he did for a living, but he could not get it to stop doing that either. He had replaced some components around the oscillator (I think I might have already done this as well) but to no avail, it still did it. So I just forgot about it, it was bought as a cheap CB to throw in the car when CBs were being stolen out of cars in the city. After the oscillator ran properly, it worked fine, it was just when it went into transmit, it took time to build up its speed!
These days, it seems that all these current CPU controlled sets take up to 1/2 second to lock after pressing transmit! Richard
@@ukfmcbradioservicingTango21 Well, my PT40 did it before them! I wonder what I did with it. After two house moves, I doubt I will ever find it again. I have never taken everything out of the shed. Next summer maybe! 🤔
Ah, part of Danita's famed 'Kermit the Frog' range..
Hi Richard any idea where i can purchase a power lead for this radio. Thanks
Yes, email me. rshireby@yahoo.co.uk Richard
My neighbour has a 25 foot aerial. He doesn't go anywhere
Very lazy meter on that
Another one I never owned but remember others having them at the time, will look forward to the scratchy corner test.
Nice new set all ready for the Scratchy corner test.
Well, I never thought I would see a name that is usually seen on a Communicator type board CB use on a Cybernet board.
Major only used Cybernets. you clearly don't know anything.
The meter was virtually inoperative on receive.
There's another of these sets to do...let's see how much variation there is on that one. Pretty limited meter range, I agree. I then did the new Midland 78 & it read S5 as soon as the aerial was connected. Both sets correctly calibrated @ S9. Glad I prefer sets with no meters. Richard, G0OJF, UK

hi 👋 richard I always enjoy your air test also best wishes to you and mr chippy from paul chapman at east sheen 73's also why is it dark over there and day light over here
Pre-record video, Saves time as he is a very busy man. Don't Forget Mr Chippie has to take time out of his days as well just to make these videos for us to just sit and watch.
Good performing hand helds , not sure that internal mike sounded right though
The internal mike has been rechecked since any prospective puchser can request a personal demo video to prove it. Richard
Hello Paul, How would it be possible to do it live with four cameras? As mentioned before all the content on this channel is recorded. On the 'on the air' tests the time & date is overlayed by GPS. Thank you for your input, Richard
What a super sounding set ! The 2 mics sounded very similar. Just a shame we have zero activity here otherwise I would snap this one up in a heartbeat. Never noticed this before but it looks like you have a 1hz beat on the signal meter during receive throughout the test
no idea where the interference is coming from though I've only noticed it for a few weeks. I've never been a CBer. I was a licenced radio amateur 2 years before CB happened here. However, I do have CB radios in all vehicles. This enables us to chat casually when we have pals here & are off in seperate vehicles. Although we are all radio amateurs, CB has the appeal of a more casual approach in chat. Bear in mind you can use 2-way radio "when safe to do so" whilst driving. You can't do that with mobile phones.....and I don;t have a mobile phone seeing as they don;t work here. Richard, G0OJF, UK P.S. radio is a customer repair, not for sale!
To my ears, the audio actually sounds too good for a Cybernet!

I get fed up with people classing this set and others as Ham Majors when they are not
Correct. Ham Major never did a UK set. Richard
@@ukfmcbradioservicingTango21 Ham Major doesn't even exist...
Thank you Mark. I though there were some Maxon built AM/FCC sets for the USA market with that name around 1979. I'm sure that same Maxon innards also appeared as an incarnation of the President Grant at the same time. Perhaps you know where the confusion comes from with your knowledge of world models. Richard
@@ukfmcbradioservicingTango21 The majority of Majors are Cybernet built. there is the odd one i suspect, but without removing all the lids i'd say all mine are Cybernet. the name Ham Major is simply because Ham International were a distributors and in Belgium they distributed Majors, and put a sticker on the back saying so. Just the same was as Sulkin, PAMA, Sharmans, Dixons, MURA, but people don't call a York 863 a Sulkin 863 :) that's the only reason, people can't read and understand where the sticker states 'distributed in Belgium by Ham International' Same way people say 'made by' the 901 was 'made by Amstrad' or the 240 'made by Rotel' Made in Japan by Cybernet, but hey, you won't educate the one who were educated in the 80's..

Great stuff Richard, you serviced my Major 3000 and it's working very well indeed! My mum worked opposite station yard and her work colleague got me a Major 3000 for £45. I was 12 at the time and really excited to get on the air!! I still live only a few miles from Fulbourn. Keep up the good work 👍
I lived in Cherry Hinton for a while and my wife's family all live around Cambridge. Lot's of tech and medical innovation that comes out of Silicon Fen. A great economic hub for the UK. Great that ARM and companies like that are still headquartered in the UK.
I remember Pulsar Light of Cambridge, Henley Rd . Disco lighting and controllers very good quality and reliable equipment.
That must be one of the few UK set's I've never owned over all the years but another good underrated 134 variant.
I had a Mustang 1000. Thinking of taking up the hobby wondering is it worth getting a vintage rig. How much for a service? Is recapping expensive?
The Cybernet sets rarely need any capacitors changing....nor the Maxon...nor the Great chassis sets. The Uniden boarded sets need quite a few changing. The Mustang used the Cybernet 002F chassis & are jolly good sets. Most current models work inferior to those.....and they are not going to last 40 years either. email me rshireby@yahoo.co.uk Richard

That worked very well for a cheap end radio. I have a grandstand hawk I believe it is which looks the same. Good job Richard 👍
A good result on the scratchy corner test, could also hear the modulation drop on low pwr at five mile point and on the base station test at the end.
Tidy, shame water had got in. However, a radio like this if outside might expect a bit of water to get n now and again. Good sets when working well, but murder to repair! Nice one Richard. I trust it is ok to call you Richard?
Roger.
Hell of a job getting that alignment right, great perseverance on your part. Tx audio nice on standard replacement mic. Really odd result at 5 mile point !!! Rx audio bassy on extension speaker but nice to listen to on local ragchews. Never seen one of these before.
Hi Richard very interesting repair setting freqs are not easy to set but at the hands of engineer as equipment is a must and good knowledge which you have is bonus
Roger on that, thank you. Your other comment had to be deleted as it mentioned an illegal radio. Rumour had it that Bill Lowe (Lowe Electronics) got the closed WorldSound factory re-opened to produce the Lowe TX40 version of this radio. The Lowe TX40 & Grandstand Hawk use the same superior version of this chassis. I can only assume that the factory closed again after the production runs were completed. Richard, G0OJF, UK
