@Al Castill Guys Guys. Mid tones. Mhmmmm..... bud I think u mean the charge 3 hes mids are muffled. And overall a mono speaker is most likely the same as a stereo only it uses one may sound less roomed then stereo. But it does sounds louder and has more bass see why would a speaker jbl charge 3 20 watt perform better with a 6000 mah battery pack Lithium ion then a charge 4 with 30 watts and 7500 battery pack lithium ion cuz u'r saying that cuz u have the charge 3 yourself overall the newer product performs better
mathice yeah the charge4 is only on 60% volume louder in the video but on 100% volume pick up the charge3 again I think I will not take either of them I take the JBL xtreme there you have all in one speaker bass and volume and it's cheaper than buying 2 speakers now
When listening on the headphones the charge 4 sounds like it has better deeper base but only slightly than the 3. I still love my 3 and won't be upgrading anymore. If you don't have the 3 I think the charge 4 is a great speaker
So I've listened to this several times on a pair of Event 20/20 active studio monitors, and also Sennheiser HD 25-1 II studio headphones. My takeaway is that the larger, single mono driver in the Charge 4 reproduces the audio more effortlessly and with much less distortion - especially at higher volumes - making it cleaner and more accurate overall. It also achieves noticeably better frequency separation. _However,_ the stereo drivers in the Charge 3 _do_ in fact make a difference, even if they're too close together to really notice the separation in a room. The Charge 3 is more likely to distort - especially in the treble range at high volume - but it doesn't have the "stark" or "naked" sound you get from a mono sound source. _It's important to remember: stereo music is mixed with the intention of being stereo, so it's not so cut-and-dry that the Charge 4 is more accurate to the overall listening experience._ In short, the Charge 4 "sounds" better, but the Charge 3 seems to "feel" better. Hard choice! Thanks for the great video.
Which one would u think would sound better when riding around on a 150 cc scooter? I got the Bose Soundlink micro but I’ve been unsure if I want to keep it. I can hear music on it but if there’s better well I would want to get the better obv. Keep trying to decide on the charge 3/4, the Bose Soundlink color 2 or just keeping the Soundlink micro I have
@@eloknu That's pretty hard to say... I just decided ultimately to go with the Anker Soundcore Motion + and it's really really nice, with a customizable 9-band EQ in the app. Not sure if that's best for the scooter sitch unless you could fasten it to the handlebars or something.
RYO-kai my Bose micro I keep in the mesh part of my bag and it works well. Clear & the bass sounds good but yeah if there’s better/louder for around the same price I’m all for it
RYO-kai I also just watched a comparison vid on the motion+ with both the charges and I’m def tempted now in checking out the motion plus assuming it’s def gonna be better than the Bose
@@eloknu I've heard the JBL speakers in person and they do sound great and huge, but the Anker Motion + just sounds really clean especially once you dial it in. With a little fine-tuning in the EQ you can make it sound like a much more expensive speaker, and it still gets pretty loud. With the JBL you're stuck with the sound profile they have. The Anker is also $100 which is a little cheaper than the Charge series. EDIT: Keep in mind that the Motion + is very directional, so as long as you can keep it facing the right way, it sounds awesome. In reality the Charges are too though.
Guys, I really don't understand your dissappointment with removing the stereo... As if you would hear the stereo separation from Charge 3 anyway... The 2 speakers in the Charge 3 will be like 10 centimeters away from each other at very maximum :D . I think from the 2 drivers being so close together from 1 meter away or more there is no chance that you would actually be able to hear the stereo separation anyway... 1 or 2 drivers 10 cm apart - the sound goes straight to your face, that's all... You will not hear the sound coming left & right when 2 drivers are 10cm apart... To help the guy who made this video understand the idea between swappig the 2 smaller drivers for 1 bigger is that the lower frequencies require bigger drivers... That's not so complex to grasp... :D subwoofers are huge and tweeters are tiny... Wider membrane helps to produce lower frequencies. Swapping 2 little drivers for 1 bigger basically trades the stereo which you would not feel anyway for a lower lows (charge 4 thus is able to go as low as 60hz instead of 65hz in charge 3). As a result the music is much more emersive and precise(cause when base being so low ,you are now actually gonna be able to clearly hear and distinguish between the low lows, the mid mids and the high highs, instead of all the separate frequencies being sort of middish..). You're welcome.
I seen them open the charge 4 it hads a big treble tweeter on the front and only one speaker 🔈 that’s why it’s more cleaner while the charge 3 hads two speakers 🔊 on the front and no big tweeters that’s why it’s not as clean
I think it was a very difficult decision for JBL to make his most copied box in Mono. I believe that with only a more powerful loudspeaker, the Charge4 has more room for air to circulate internally and perform better. However, the immersion sensation that stereo sound produces can drive away the most demanding audiophiles (like me, for example). I'm not really understanding JBL lately ... The Flip3 had better sound than the new Flip4, the Pulse2 had better sound than the current Pulse3, now this one to launch a Charge4 MONO. The brand seems to be going down a rather strange path.
The charge 3 is more about sound pressure and its mids are a little screechy, whereas the charge 4 is a more of a full rich room filling sound. ( but I do agree that the charge 3 has better over all loudness but it compensates volume with sound quality )
I just bought the charge 3. Here in my country the charge 4 is only 10% more expensive than charge 3. Should I keep the charge 3 or return it and buy charge 4. Which is the better speaker outdoors?
@@ln3346 So I bought charge 4 while I still had charge 3. Charge 4 has much better sound. The bass has more punch to it, the mids are much better, the sound has more depth to it, charge 3 was very shallow. Charge 3 is a little bit louder outdoors than charge 4 but the difference is negligible. In the end I kept charge 4 and returned charge 3. I'm more than satisfied after 7 months. I dropped the speaker multiple times both on the ground and in water and it is still working fine.
@@vagabond630 Thanks for the quick reply. I think in the end I will opt for the Wonderboom 2, as I want to be able to nonchalantly carry the speaker in my hand everywhere I go, especially during sprinting/jogging. And the fact it has a 360° sound, as I'm too much of an audio snob and I bet I'd spend way much time just positioning the JBL to face me everywhere I turn.
Ive owned the charge 3 since it came out two years ago. I recently sold it off to buy the charge 4. The audio quality in person IS better all around despite it not being in stereo anymore. But I will say that JBL should have used two 55mm 15 watt drivers in the charge 4 instead of one 30 watt oval driver. From a sales and specs stand point having two drivers means more to allot of people then just one powerful driver.
@@kennethrogers3687 I'm guessing JBL wanted to take a different approach since allot of other companies are using two smaller drivers and getting distortion at high volume levels. The Charge 4 on the other hand really doesn't distort. But like I said people want more drivers not less. Specs talk to people more then actually hearing the device in person.
I just bought a charge 4 today. But for one and only reason. My rationale was that both of them were almost the same price. The charge 4 is newer and more updated, so it will definitely bring something new to the listener, especially the slightly bigger battery. I've listened to charge 3's before. I have to say they almost sound the same. Unless you're really a nerdy birdie you won't feel the difference. Bottom line: if you already have a charge 3 do not upgrade, if you you're buying jbl's for the first time, get a charge 4.
Charge 4 has slightly more bass but less mids. I personally prefer the charge 3 cause it has a better balance between highs mids and lows. But you still can setup your eq and have the sounds you like in both. Nice comparison, thank you!
I have a Charge 3 and recently bought a Charge 4. I noticed lower max volume, lower battery performance when at high volume and something was off with the music. Thank you for pointing out that the Charge 4 is now in mono sound. It's going back and might go to something better.
I don‘t really agree with you... The Charge 4 is a pretty good inprovement. It plays much cleaner, doesnt crackle on bass heavy songs like the Charge 3 does, has noticibly deeper and louder bass. The Charge 3 sounds horrible for me next to the Charge 4.
I've been watching since the Soundbattle flip 3 vs flip 4 days. I cant say how good your channel is, thank you for the purchase decision of the flip 4. I was going for the flip 3 back then (I had a JBL flip) then I researched all about both of the flips, and I went with the 4. Keep up the great work, and the outstanding videos like the comparison videos. Also, I was going for an Onyx studio 4, till the studio 5 came out. I like the Onyx Studio 5 for the price and the size, that being said the Boombox sounds better but also I'm not a fan of mono for audio purposes, I'm sure the onyx hits harder in bass performance but overall yes the Boombox gets a bit harsh on the treble since it gets loud as boom, I'm deciding to go with the boombox!
For all of the commenters who think if you buy and connect a second Charge 4 (which are the single speaker Mono units) you will get "stereo" sound, stereo doesn't work that way. True stereo is a separation of channels where music / sound is recorded on 2 "separate" tracks ... a Left and a Right channel (aka "speaker"), so if a producer of music puts say an intro guitar sound or other to just one channel (either the Left or the Right) then the design is that the sound plays just out of that one side, thus giving you the "separation". A Mono speaker unit, not having a separate Left and a Right speaker (or channel, if you prefer), therefore CANNOT REPRODUCE a stereo signal made up of these 2 separate channels. The Mono unit's processor only recognizes the stereo signal as as single channel so by just adding a second Mono speaker, all you have done is doubled your Mono thus you get the same guitar sound out of both the units, not separated it to either a Left or a Right so therefore NO SEPARATION (unless of course "there's an app for that", lol). And no, it doesn't matter if you have one mono speaker on one side of your head and a second mono speaker on the other ... it is still ONE CHANNEL regardless and you get the guitar out of both whereas on your home stereo or a set of headphones, you would get it distinctly out of one of the speakers as it was recorded / produced in the studio. Meanwhile, I still can't make up my mind over replacing my now broken Charge 2 with either the 3 or the 4, as stereo sound is important to me whether the speakers are only 2 inches apart or 10 feet! I know that my Charge 2 knocked my sock off a couple years ago when I bought it, but I know that at the higher volume end you do lose some clarity and bass so I expect about the same with the Charge 3 but the sound is SO RICH out of my 2 that I don't want to end up with a less hearty & sterilized sound if choosing the 4, albeit it "cleaner" with more bass as reviewed and frequently commented here. As of this comment, the 3 is running a good $70 cheaper than the 4 on Amazon, so my choice might come down to cutting my purchase cost nearly in half by going with the 3. Damn near tempted to buy them both though and hear them side by side and "free return" whichever I like least. If I do, I will try and come back and update with my findings.
Totally agree with you. I'm getting some for Christmas so this is all I needed to know. I'm gonna go for the 3. The two drivers I feel distribute sound better than just one.
Mr Ed what does that mean in fact? We wanna gift a 3 or 4 to a friend as a birthday present and i don’t really know what’s the better option. Price is not the problem tho
@@bhop2303 The Price on charge 4 is a little bit bigger than charge 3. The reason why it's bigger because it has 3D passive radiators and It has more Bass
Jerry4050 so back then I watched other reviews. I knew my friend likes base and electro house music. So we bought the charge 4 for him. I saw a charge 3 refurbished for 70€ on amazon and couldn’t resist and it didn’t fail me tbh. The highs as well as the Mids and even the base is strong and clear. I like the 3 one and I don’t regret buying it especially for this price!
Long story short.. the charge 3 wants to slap you in the face.. the charge 4 wants to caress your face.. depends on your listening needs.. have them both.. charge 4 for the softer tunes, charge 3 for the party.. charge 4 has a softer deeper sound until you turn it up.. charge 3 remains constant all throughout.. 3 for the win
I was going for the Charge 3 and heard the 4 came out so I thought I should listen to some comparisons before deciding and honestly the charge 3 sounded better to me, the charge 4 sounds kinda weird like muffled, so I decided on the 3
I listened to this on my AirPods Pro and the charge 3 sounds much crispier and the bass seems more balanced but I like the design of the charge 4 better. Which one should I get?
Charge 4 has more interest sound, and she's got 30W instead 20W, Bass has become more. But i'm have Charge 3, so i don't need to buy new "Utra Different" model.
For those who ask about the stereo, at a normal distance you don't hear the stereo because the speakers are to close from each other. That's why you can better get the charge 4. Some people like the sound of the 3 and others prefer the bass from the 4. You decide what your type is but the stereo won't change anything.
Bought a Charge 2 years ago on clearance ($45) after the Charge 3 was out. A few days ago, I found an unclaimed Charge 4 at a construction site. It works well, just cleaned it up. I like them both, the 4 is louder, but a lot bigger than 2. If I were buying a new one, I'd look for a Charge 3. Since my Charge 4 was free, I have no complaints.
Listening with HD headphones. The charge 4 has better bass at lower volumes but the at max volume the charge 3 is a bit louder. But that's because its stereo vs mono.
Stereo make no sense on a speaker that size any way because your ears will never be able to distinguish any stereo separation because the drivers are so close together.
Huhuhu just bought charge 4 :( Charge 4 - lack of highs and mid, they focused on the low frequency 60-20000hz the sound is quite dark for me and it overpowered the mid and highs Charge 3 - all are equal i can hear low, mid and high frequencies and it is stereo 65-20000hz everything is equal and no overpowering when it comes to sound. This is just based on my observations and wht i heard. Charge 4, why u go to mono? Wht is the RMS and PMPO of charge 4?
YES, another video, first here :0. Love ur channel dude. I'm a major supporter here. U watch all ur vids. Ur gonna become a millionsub someday. Charge 4 = Mini Xtreme 2. Honestly I like the charge 3 better. Sounds more true and the bass also seems stronger. Just the quick bass hits like a quick "BOOM" in songs the charge 4 beats it. Also when music and a bit of bass is playing in the backround the charge 4 brings it out more but hides the mids. Overall the charge 3 wins.
@@DLXWillington No problem. This is my favorite channel after all. I'm surprised you dont have over 100k. You work really hard and people who barely edit are ahead of you. Keep up the good work.
Finally someone who does not play only some d&b/ step on test! And because of diverse music gener, you are one from few that speaks about stereo! Hip hop and D&B does not need stereo, electronic & other geners need. Thumbs up! Anyway i'll choose always stereo and 3.5 jack for lipsync issues correction. I have also Sony xb22 with live scene and L R separation is clear and fill up the front of the room, but Sony's battery is a pain in cold conditions, and i work in 2'C...
I would like to defend the idea of the mono speaker. If you place it vertically, the speaker will be in a higher position. Then it can emit a good sound into the room. This is especially useful if you have a very deep foundation. Otherwise, I put it horizontally :-) Personally, I'm very enthusiastic about the sound of the Charge 4, compared to the Charge 3 - I own both. Especially the bass performance and the detailed sound in all frequencies are an improvement.
I actually know the reason why they went from stereo to mono because i own a charge 3 and it is a great speaker but after 6 months of usage my left speaker sounds a little sparkly when the volume is at 50% or 60% but when it is at 100% it sounds great not only i have this problem i saw many people having the same issue
Honestly stereo is better than mono. I listen to a couple of songs that definitely show the difference in mono and stereo. When I play them through a mono speaker it's sounds horrible like everything is mashed together but when played on stereo it's sound is clear and balanced. I'm staying with my charge 3.
I like the chrage 3 because it is stereo, and most songs are recorded in stereo sound, so I prefer the speaker that spepartes the sound, and charge 3 dooes and awesome job in comparison to the 4.
Well... im making a decision. Jbl3 ? or 4 ?. i like techno and black metal, death metal, grind core, and moscow death brigade. I really like jbl clear sound but im confused now. Can i update hardware like firmware to a stereo charge4 ? :D
It'as quite simple why they went a single driver in the Charge 4. They was trying to get a louder sound with a larger driver and 30 watts. The real reason though is to get you to buy a second one for Stereo.
I was wondering why the charge 3 sounded better, and there it is,stereo sound it is a big deal, why pay more for a lesser mono sound speaker ,makes no sense !
If you want to turn on the bass with the JBL charge 3 or 4, hold the bluetooth button and the minus button for 20 seconds, then all the lights will light up and the bass will work up to 1 Hz
Just bought a charge 3 after having the flip 4. The charge 4 doesn't sound as good with highs, and honestly seems kinda muffled in the highs in a way if that makes sense. The 3 just sounds more balanced overall in my opinion. I do think the 4 has a little more bass tho
To me, the 3 sounded brighter and handled the high and midrange better where the 4 seemed subdued or slightly choked ot while handling low end better. Overall from what I could tell from the video, I think the 3 was a better sound stage. The 3 also seems to have a better feature package. I dont know, I personally think the 4 is a bit of a fail for no apparent reason. It's more expensive so why cut features? Disappointing.
I'm still not sure why some think it's such a big step back going from two drivers to one larger driver. Putting two small drivers around 3" apart isn't going to give you any stereo separation to speak of in a small portable speaker like this. It's really a moot point for the most part. The one larger driver in the Charge 4 does offer the speaker the ability to play a little lower in range, which is a plus that is actually worthwhile.
@@JaysStraightUpReviews The effect related to the diameter of the driver. The only drivers I know that are said to not suffer from it are those BMR drivers like the Tectonic TEBM46C20N-4B. Don't see many of those used in cheap BT speakers however.
Wow, after listening to the sound clips you laid out, I couldn't disagree more. I thought the 4 was much muddier, with considerably less separation. I listened to this on my BW headphones, so it wasnt that...
I bought charge 3 like 3 years ago almost and i was so hyped for charge 4 to be released and i was planning an upgrade within half a year but i guess im npt gonna do anything unless they bring back dual speaker
Just because there are 2 woofers on each side, doesn't mean in plays in stereo... But even if does play in stereo, the speakers are so close to each other that you won't even notice the stereo feature and it would just be a gimmick selling point.
I own both, i can tell you the 4 is louder and lasts longer. when I take it along to Motorpool Mondays i can hear it so much more clearly over the tracked vehicles than I can hear the 3. The 3 does sound better though because it has two mid-range speakers where the 4 only has a single (albeit larger) midrange. At the higher end of either one's outputs, the 4 sounds better whereas the 3 is really pushing its limits (simply because of the larger drivers in the 4). To sum it up, the 3 is better for an office or household use, whereas the 4 is geared more for tailgate, campfire, cook-outs, or even in the garage while you're using power tools. both sound great for what you're getting (for you audiophiles out there just get yourself a multi-channel sound system with in-depth Equalizer functions if you really want to hear every under/overtone in your favorite track and quit wasting your time buying these smaller portable systems)
Thanx for the review bro, very clean setup. Charge 4 here we go. It's gotta be better than what I got now. The smallest jbl joints sound better than my tube fasho. My big bro got a flip 4 and it blows away my speaker that's 4x it's size.
JBL has a firmware update for the Charge 4 I installed tonite. No info as to what it did though, I got excited when I saw it it and my Charge 4 sounds a bit louder now. Just an FYI, I might be late to that update party lol. Holla and let us know please?

Best sound comparsions ever! Top #1 speaker channel for me! I have a question: Will be there a video from the jbl partybox?
You're not going to hear the difference if it's stereo or mono get another one set them on one side of the room and set the other one on the other side of the room then you can tell the difference
Charge 3 was more brilliant, cleaner and well equalized tones, showing a pleasant and balanced sound. Charge 4 was definitely a downgrade, tangled sound and excessive basses spoiled the songs in a comparison with its predecessor.
The single bigger driver can't match the upper response of two smaller drivers. The two smaller drivers can't match the bass of the larger single driver.
I think somebody r saying that chrg 3 is more louder but that's completely wrong I personally think that charge 4 is more improved in case of bass, clearity, and it has less distortion than Charg 3 but the main thing is that the difference is not huge but surely charge 4 is more improved
Wow! At 60% they sounded pretty much the same, the 4 maybe a tad better. But at 100% the 3 sounded way better & clearer, you could hear all instruments very clear. The 4 sounded more muffled & the base over rode the other instruments. Thanks the 3 definitely won the battle. If I make a purchase I'll by the 3 & save some money also.
Bought the Charge 4 from Amazon and wondering if I should return it for the 3. For some rock songs, it just doesn't sound very good at all. Way too muddy for mids and highs. Besides, rap only sounds good on a subwoofer. It's nice having the low end because it's not flat, but you can't go very low on a Bluetooth speaker.
Sadly, JBL is falling back. They had the best speakers around but now they have to find a new way to make them sound better. Request: UE boom 3 vs boom 2? RIGHT like JBL Go 2? Just adds a radiator. Clip 3? A different radiator, and with some other appearances like the design. Charge 4? Its alright, my opinion Xtreme is still better than Xtreme 2, etc etc. Just saying, they could of went with a better idea but oh well

_It's important to remember: stereo music is mixed with the intention of being stereo, so it's not so cut-and-dry that the Charge 4 is more accurate to the overall listening experience._
In short, the Charge 4 "sounds" better, but the Charge 3 seems to "feel" better.

As a result the music is much more emersive and precise(cause when base being so low ,you are now actually gonna be able to clearly hear and distinguish between the low lows, the mid mids and the high highs, instead of all the separate frequencies being sort of middish..). You're welcome.

Charge 4 sounds hollow judging by this YT video.
I have a charge 4 and IMO the mids are good. I heard a charge 3 before and honestly, I didn’t see much of a difference in see
I think it was a very difficult decision for JBL to make his most copied box in Mono.
@@vagabond630 Yo which one did you keep in the end? Are you satisfied after 7 months?
Yeah, it would be impossible to run with a charge4 seeing how it is over two times both in volume and mass.
I couldn't agree more. We want more speakers, not less. What are they thinking? Peace.
55mm? Thats a little too big for this small enclosure

It’s awesome how this video was organized it really lets you compare the two speakers side by side and he explains what he can about both
It really is a great video but the sound isn’t as great of quality as it would be hearing the speakers in person
Charge 4 has slightly more bass but less mids. I personally prefer the charge 3 cause it has a better balance between highs mids and lows. But you still can setup your eq and have the sounds you like in both. Nice comparison, thank you!

Thanks dude. I know a lot of people don't mind the mono sound but just like you, it bothers me a little bit and influences my decision a little bit.

Beats my wallet By Dr. Drew ok
I closed my eyes and every time id say to my sis one is better it was always the charge 3 lol

For those who ask about the stereo, at a normal distance you don't hear the stereo because the speakers are to close from each other. That's why you can better get the charge 4. Some people like the sound of the 3 and others prefer the bass from the 4. You decide what your type is but the stereo won't change anything.
For my opinion charge 4 have deep bass & beat
But for charge 3 it have normal bass/beat ( not deep ) and have louder sound than charge 4
volume isnt as important as bass lul
Bought a Charge 2 years ago on clearance ($45) after the Charge 3 was out. A few days ago, I found an unclaimed Charge 4 at a construction site. It works well, just cleaned it up. I like them both, the 4 is louder, but a lot bigger than 2. If I were buying a new one, I'd look for a Charge 3. Since my Charge 4 was free, I have no complaints.
Charge 3 is the better performer on my opinion because it has a stereo sound the charge 4 I don't like the way they did the mano sound.
Huhuhu just bought charge 4 :(
Charge 4 - lack of highs and mid, they focused on the low frequency 60-20000hz the sound is quite dark for me and it overpowered the mid and highs
Charge 3 - all are equal i can hear low, mid and high frequencies and it is stereo 65-20000hz everything is equal and no overpowering when it comes to sound.
This is just based on my observations and wht i heard. Charge 4, why u go to mono?

I was listening to this with my jbl charge 3 and there is a bass change in the 4
I would like to defend the idea of the mono speaker. If you place it vertically, the speaker will be in a higher position. Then it can emit a good sound into the room. This is especially useful if you have a very deep foundation.
Otherwise, I put it horizontally :-)
Personally, I'm very enthusiastic about the sound of the Charge 4, compared to the Charge 3 - I own both. Especially the bass performance and the detailed sound in all frequencies are an improvement.

I'm not sure about what you are saying. But doing a firmware update ain't gonna give you stereo on a mono speaker like the Charge 4
It'as quite simple why they went a single driver in the Charge 4. They was trying to get a louder sound with a larger driver and 30 watts. The real reason though is to get you to buy a second one for Stereo.

However, larger driver = narrower dispersion.
@@Grommet2007 that's not a given. Lot of variables. Plus, as I mentioned when drivers are just a couple I ches apart it's nearly a moot point.

Right. Like my t.v. I gotta put my head against the center bottom to experience stereo.
