  • Following on from the previous money-saving video where we saved £37 for 3 minutes of work - is another doing work that was quoted at £370 by the main dealership. However, the part itself only cost £15 - so here is how to save yourself £355 for around an hours work.
    Parts: Spring Mounts - I only needed the bottom on the offside so here is a link to that: www.ebay.co.uk...
    Tools:
    - Trolley Jack
    - Jack Pad (Not totally necessary)
    - Another Trolley Jack (For control arm)
    - Axle Stands
    - WD40
    - Breaker Bar
    - Wheel Wrench/Socket (Usually 17mm)
    - 13/16th Spanner (Ideally) OR 21mm Spark Plug Socket/Deep Socket
    - 18mm Spanner
    - Mallet
    - Flathead Screwdriver

    Just had both mounts changed under warranty, but quote before warranty work approved was £650! Awesome video and great to see what was actually repaired.

    Thanks for the video, I changed both my rear mounts using your instructions. The only hiccup was when I found 5cm had broken off the bottom of the nearside spring, hence a days delay while getting new springs from the local store! I found that positioning the jack about halfway between the camber bolts and the spring was the best position for getting the bolts in and out more easily (about where you had it!).

      No worries at all, glad it was helpful! Shame about the spring but better to know than drive it with a broken spring 😅

    Thank you for the video!! Saved me as two of my springs had broken before MOT. Didn't have any issues getting the new coil in but did have issues with the bolt, two Jack's seemed to help get the hole aligned

    Having a look under my 2016 A4 B9 today and found the nearside rear mount had disintegrated, and the spring had broken. Speaking to the Audi dealer, this lower mount is apparently part of a service alert and technician remarked he had seen several of these in a bad condition - mines are way worse than yours even.
    Thanks for posting, and hoping to get away with just undoing the shock lower bolt.

      Sounds like a common fault then! At least it’s an easy job - yes Carl commented saying it can be done with shock bolts - hopefully it can and it’ll be even easier!
      Thanks Paul

      Yes this was a so so job in the end with a helper who pushed the hub down while I got the spring onto the rubber bit. On your own would be a pig.
      Then getting the camber bolts lined up was also a bit tricky.
      This is a good video on UA-cam and followed it with my Mrs.
      Get a marking pen to ensure the camber is unaffected.

      @@markbro4427 I had to change the lower rubber mounts, but the upper were fine. I didn’t lower the arm as he does in the vid, I bought a spring compressor. Worked quite well although it would have been 100x easier with the car on a lift.

      @@sebrura i actually meant the two lowers, tops seem to last ok....not too bad a job. Parts were surprisingly cheap from Audi. I don't know how Audi are working out that silly price for fitting, took me an hour to do both sides, mounts, springs and new camber bolts and I'd never done them before.

    Hey man! Kinda late to the video but my rear spring control arm cracked from an accident and I’m trying to replace it myself. This is the part number 8W0-505-311-H but from watching your video it seems like you kinda actually take it part way off but I was just wondering do you think this is something I could do myself with no lift?

    • @JAYPCARS
      @JAYPCARS  7 місяців тому +1

      Hi mate, having a look at the part number to see a photo, it looks like you could do it yourself without too many issues. Rear bolt out and spring mount out like in the video, then there’s the shock absorber bolt and the front bolt. Only thing I’m not 100% about is what will happen when you let off the shock absorber bolt. Maybe a trolley jack under the shock and slowly let it down? And then when at end of its travel you might be able to remove trolley jack and take the arm down under it. Then you’d have to jack it up into place when lining up the bolt holes to the new arm. That’s what I think but can’t be 100% sure as haven’t done it myself.

      @@JAYPCARSYep rubber outside with aluminium inside which corrodes (oxidation/white powder like residue) which swells and splits the outer rubber, very common on audi's as are the snapped springs. @@JAYPCARS they are rubber with an aluminium base coated in rubber and aluminium lugs to locate in the hole.....the aluminium turns to white dust. Absolutely ridiculous design....done a spring and mount this morning and the other side was rotten as well and the spring had dislodged and moved outwards towards the shock so replaced it and the spring as well....I'd recommend new inner camber bolts as well depending on how bad they are. Easy job as long as those camber bolts move and a not seized in the bushing sleeve.

      From what I remember there is a bolt and washer. I wanted the washer to be put back in the same way (think it’s eccentric so lining up mattered) so the marker shows the washer alignment with the surrounding metal for when I’m putting it back together. Doing the same with the bolt meant I could get the bolt close enough to where it was originally. The car then went for an alignment 😊

The dealer price is ridiculous.

    Why would you undo the camber bolts when you could of just undone the shock absorber bolts...?? This is how I replaced my rear springs and no need to get the car tracked up afterwards...

    • @JAYPCARS
      @JAYPCARS  2 роки тому

      With the shock absorber bolts undone will the front of the arm lower enough? I assumed with the other parts attached to the front it wouldn’t drop as much as the back?
      Either way I wanted to have it tracked as I had uneven wear on the front.

    • @markbro4427
      @markbro4427 3 місяці тому

      The arm hits the hub, it won't go down far enough, you could compress the spring on the car and remove but taking the inner camber bolt off is easier ( provided it's not seized into the arm bushing)....done an A4 both sides this morning.
