    It was these starter sets in Aldi that got me back into the hobby after a 45 year break.

      Same here. My very first Starter set Airfix Spitfire from Lidl got me back into the hobby (finally learning how to brush pain too)! I also had a stockpile of awesome untouched kits accumulated over the years that I've finally started 😅

      Same here. It was the Yellowjacks Gnat from Lidl, and as my wife bought it, the stash that I have accumulated since is partially her fault.

    Really enjoyed this as I can't resist buying these whenever they're in Aldi/Lidl but had no idea they were specifically made or re-tooled just for sale in these stores, completely agree with binning the paints and glue (or at least storing them in a shoebox under the bed along with the rest of the crap), the brush is worth keeping, with a bit of patience they turn out to be be cracking little models, anyway thanks again 👍

    What’s wrong with using the tube of Poly Cement? It’s not yet failed me when I’ve needed it!

    • @VFCproductions
      @VFCproductions  8 місяців тому +1

      I grew up on Revell Contacta - a precise cement that does the job. Going to a tube of wall filler is a bit of a jump in the wrong direction

    • @Dwarvious
      @Dwarvious 8 місяців тому +1

      It’s hardly wall filler but I completely understand Revell Contacta being your preference, it is nice to have the precision!

      @@Dwarvious if it had a precision nozzle I'd be happy with it. A lot of UA-camrs hate it, whereas I just dislike it.

      I remembered when I'm starting this in 70s I can't get my hand on such Poly Cement. Our emporium selling Matchbox kits but not the cement, so I used Chinese made generic cement that bad idea and sometimes I'm using uhu glue😂......nowadays modellers are very lucky, a bunch of dedicated cement available on all kind of brand😊

      I remember tube cement from modelling in the 70s and early 80s. Horrendous stuff, and I hated it. It was a god send when liquid poly was invented. All liquid poly was good for was leaving finger prints melted into the model and it's clear parts 😂

    What do you expect for 6 quid?!.. I’ve been back into it since lockdown and done most of these. No complaints from me, so much better than we had when I was a kid in the 70s.

      If a £6 kit is faulty and leads to a beginner giving up, then it was worthless to Airfix in the long term. If a £9 kit is exactly the same but fits properly, that person may then go back and buy more. With a lot of competition for a person's spare time, kit companies have to make sure an introduction to the hobby is a positive one. Telling a teenager '50 years ago we had worse' isn't going to cut it.
      Personally, I'll accept a £3 saving for a kit that may need more work, but that's because I'm already in too deep!

    Not a bad little kit, I found some fit issues with the nose panels, but overall it went together well. My pitot tube survived, some of the gun barrels didn't!

  • @anrewbeal7369

    I built this a while ago had no fit issues, has regards painting the engine detail the fw 190 fan means it's not really visible anyway even in larger scales

  • @nheather
    @nheather 8 місяців тому

    To be fair, I don’t think the faults that you pointed out, like the pitot tube and the engine are not peculiar to the starter set - they would be like that in the full model too.
    There are genuine simplifications in starter sets though, you mentioned one, a simpler set of decals, but sometimes there are parts removed. Two examples are the Sherman Firefly and Tiger I tanks which only come with the one piece tracks, the sprue that contains the detailed tracks is not included and unfortunately that sprue also includes some other detail parts - for example the Sherman lacks the front ledge, stowage and some pioneer tools.

    I think theres too much snootiness in the modelling fraternity these days.Everything has to have the correct rivet sizes,and you must weather it god forbid.When most older people got into it,we just wanted basically a "toy" that you had the excitement of gluing together and then going out with your mates and running up the road making engine sounds and maching gun sounds.However,historical accuracy seems to fail.I see nowadays too many Luftwaffe aircraft made without swastikas on the tail fin.Its supposed to be FUN,not an exercise in being anally retentive.

    • @Chilly_Billy
      @Chilly_Billy 8 місяців тому +1

      Agreed. The rivet counters really make me laugh in 1/72 scale.
      As for the lack of swastikas, it is illegal to display them in Germany and Austria. Perhaps other countries, I don't know. A stupid way to cancel history.

    • @fenrismodels
      @fenrismodels 8 місяців тому

      Unfortunately, it's not a canceling of history. There are very real hate groups that still actively use the symbol and all its intended evil, which is more the reason why it's illegal to sell anything with that symbol on it in a number of countries. No one will forget what it is, what it looks like, or what it stood/stands for just because some plastic doesn't have it displayed.@@Chilly_Billy
