Festool track splinter guard cheaper/better alternative?!

- Hello folks! Wanted to do an install video of the Makita version of a splinter guard for our tracks. Time will tell if these hold up as well as the Festool version, but initial impressions I can say I honestly like the Makita version more. And, for half the price of the Festool version, that’s pretty awesome!

Festool used to use the black splitter guard and I preferred that as well. Glad to see this option. I’ll try this next.

Alternatively, use a marking knife, carve the line and hold the knife in the grove while aligning the board to the splinter guard. The knife acts as a positive stop.

My older Festool rails came with a black splinter guard. I never liked the clear ones. I'll try the Makita guard. Thanks for the video, I'm not sure I would have thought to try it.

I made the change over on my three tracks. I agree with you.
Looks like I’ll have to buy a few more for my 55” tracks. So far I really do think they might have an edge on the Festool. Also curious about the Makita rails themselves. I’ve heard great things about those too
I’ll have to remember that tip about the Makita splinter guard versus the Festool. After cleaning my track I like to apply a coat of paste wax to the top of the track and the bottom plate of my track saw to make the cut more effortless.

Prefer the clear version as you can see where your lins is when you passed it. Never had problems with aligning the clear guard. Nor having the problem that the glue was not sticky enough, but we don't have extreem heat in Netherlands.
Not sure if the peeling issue is just for us folks who live in an oven during the summer? And not sure why my eyes did not like the clear guard? Maybe I’m just getting too damn old😉
I don't think it is because of the black color splinter guard but rather any solid non-see tru color. I have the Kreg track and the splinter guard is solid blue and works great in terms of seeing the cut line. As far as the sticky back I cannot comment as I don't have others to compare to.

Thanks for sharing the info! Gotta ask... did you make or buy that green dust cover/plate over your TS 55? I have the Festool dust guard, which greatly improves dust collection, but you are not able to cut bevels with it on. Thanks again man!
Hey Jeff! I did not make the dust cover. I actually bought it on Etsy. Tons of guys on there who sell them.
Are the thicknesses the same? The thickness of the Festool tape is sized so that the sled sits perfectly flat on the workpiece. Or in other words, in the same plane as the workpiece you are cutting.
I have no issues so I’m assuming they are identical.
Yes there is a difference in thickness and it will show in the cut quality. Makita is 2.25 mm and Festool 1.9mm and the old style black Festool is 1.8 mm.Change out all of the strips to maintain square cuts . A digital caliper is a good investment to have in your shop to verify this.
Why the …. Are you throwing away the old splinterguard?? Just stick it back a few mm futher than it was en make a new cut, Job done!
I do that at last 2 times on mine festool tracks and works like a boss. The Dutch way of saving money
And here I sit, waiting for milwaukee to give us an M18 tracksaw... :-(
I have the 6 1/2" fuel; maybe I'll try to adapt it to one of the available tracks.
I bet they will have one soon.
With a shallow backwards scoring cut I don't really need a splinter guard.
I mainly appreciate the splinter guard for lining up my work piece. I find it to be the fastest and most accurate for getting your mark lined up correctly to the inside kerf of the blade.
Leaving the Festool tracks in my truck in hot weather, the splinter guards fall off on their own.
