he also talks about dreaming in colors. Alot of people think he was a color synthesist, a person who can hear colors. So everytime he played guitar, he was literally seeing, like a kaleidoscope, all these different shapes and colors dancing, automatically, thats why he never plays "red house" the same twice, hes always creating new shapes and colors and feelings inside his head and what makes him special was he made it into excist, while we all are still imagining.

Thank you sir for this upload, you did a beautiful job on this interview, you brought out the real Jimi Hendrix, that is how he relates to people, and i can tell by the excitement in his voice that he was happy to be interviewed not as a musician, but as a person, socializing with a friend... I love the tone of his voice as he is relating his life experiences to you, like a child, so happy to share... RIP Jimi...

You'r e right,; it is a beautiful interview. I love the easy persiflage. He sounds like such a lovely bloke. I have seen interviews and heard him and I am convinced he was a good 'un. Oh, and he was the absolute cutting edge of music. He was the wave. There were experimenters such as 'Silver Apples' and 'Pink Floyd, of which the Barrett stuff is gorgeous but Jimi was driving that scene. Syd would have said the same . he loved him. Great interview. Made me cry. Thanks for reviving it.

not to detract from historical interview but Jimi did mention something which sounded like sleep paralysis. I use to have them. One i can remember: i had this dream of drowning. i sort of woke up, but i could not move. I was aware i existed but all my senses were gone. no alcohol or no substances when i went to bed. so im laying there, no hearing, no sight, no nothing. i felt buried alive. im almost sure that it was horror and anxiety that brought my senses back and then in about half an hour i was able to get out of bed. very scarry. you here of people in comas for several years and they will tell you the same thing when they are the lucky ones to come out of coma. there needs to be more research into sleep paralysis and coma so the outside world can someday communicate with those in coma, and reassure them, there's people here who are caring for you and love you

I had something similar but when I was sleeping I woke up couldn't move a muscle in my body but my mind was completely awake. But it wouldn't last very long, weird shit that's for sure

    • @Katsem

I had sleep paralysis years ago, and was terrified. Finally was able to move my little finger and touch my husband, who incredibly sensed something and asked me if I was ok. That snapped me right out of it. Since then I've studied "out of body experiences" and know this can be part of that. William Buhlman has some great videos, and books if you are inclined to delve into it.

I loved this interview more than many conducted then. It finds him in a private setting, and as usual, he is kind to the interviewer in his soft voice, NEVER EVER rude to anyone other than those who would hurt the ones he loved. There is no trace of the 'wild man' his later manager depicted him as.

I remember listening to the radio in late 1989 early 1990 to a program called Flashback and they also had a program by the same people called the Live Show. Anyhow I used to record parts of these shows esp for Jimi stuff. Around the 2:30 mark in this video he talks about Astral Travel or Astral Projection. I had that part tapped from the Flashback show and I used to listen to it all the time. I was 15 then and I thought Hendrix was talking about LSD. I recently did some more digging on this interview and some other ones and discovered what he was really getting on about. Needles to say I believe Astral Projection is real. I believe ESP is real and premonitions. I've had my run ins with all of this stuff. I think Jimi was wise beyond his years and not some drugged up lunatic. Thank you for posting this. It's been a long time since I heard it but his words have stayed in my mind since I first heard them.

great interview, i can so relate to what he's feeling, the recurring dreams, i know exactly what he's talking about when letting himself immerse into a fear, letting it go just to see where this takes you, being on a quest to understand what this feeling is, like have you ever felt a wave of happiness and stopped to think and remember what thought it was that made you feel this way? his mother died when he was 16 so all that makes sense. jimi had a very acute awareness of his surroundings and feelings, i'm like who hasn't looked at an animal and felt the connection or kinship with it? jimi had cherokee in him and native american religion is based on their connection with nature, the wind, sky, sun, earth, animals. he may not have been aware of this and was trying to simply understand the "feeling" he had, he was being true to these instincts he felt. last bit about heaven is hilarious, "you had no business dying either."

his mom was unfit because of the disease of alcoholism .Part Cherokee indian, she was never really healthy.she died when Jimi was young but well past the toddler age .his father was essentially a single parent .I remember that interview ,at least in part from the soundtrack and the movie from '73 which is now re-issued and even longer on DVD.he had very cinematic recall of his mom leaving. it was sad then and it's sad now .but that's what makes great art.

We shouldn't forget though that we all were rambling about star signs, pyramids, reincarnation etc..combined with the soundtrack of the latest amazing psychedelic albums and acid comedowns and what not..The interview on the inside gatefold sleeve of "Rainbow Bridge" is a prime example...
Hendrix being without a doubt a legend, but wasn't it mostly about the music ?...His lyrics were often inspired by science fiction dime novels ; scribbled on the back of hotel notes ,which brought forth some beautiful poetry, but often also somewhat caricaturist naive ramblings...still...we should've been so lucky to have had him around longer....

I absolutely love this interview; the interviewer was actually interested in Hendrix as a human being, and cared enough to listen to him and give him the ability to express himself. I could see why Hendrix opened up; he had grown so accustomed to others trying to take advantage of him that he rejoiced when Meatball Fulton wanted to just converse on a human level.

ukwingchunstudent I experienced what must have been sleep paralysis, or lucid dreaming, now almost 8 years ago, near the end of August, 2009. On that afternoon, a person I knew delivered a cat to me, that I said I could adopt. Well, of course this cat was terrified of being in a new environment, and I had just moved into the place myself. He ran under my bed and wouldn't come out, naturally, so I slept on an inflatable bed in my front room, giving the cat his space until he acclimated. That night, it felt like I slumbered long and deep, maybe with delight because the cat was so gorgeously precious, albeit understandably (or so I thought) prone to vociferous hydraulic-blast hissing at me from under my bed! But just before the break of dawn I recall, I was in an intensely inert dreamy state, and yet it seemed I had been aroused from sleep though under some paralyzing gravity, and what's more, like a warm creature had surreptitiously been peering into my face studying my respiration while sleeping! What a dream impression that night. Quite similar to Henri Rousseau's painting, "The Sleeping Gypsy". That was my first crush on my boy, who turned out to be a feral but we became closest confidants dwelling in this etrrnal mirage!

Back in about 1965-1970 there was a lot of talking going on. People got into long conversations and talked about all kinds of things. Dreams, drugs and everything in between, nothing was off limits to talk about. People really communicated. This interview is like that. It's not like listening to someone and thinking about what you're going to say next. It was truly listening to people and getting inside their heads.

I think he was a fully right-brained individual whose creative energy was almost completely unhindered by the things that obstruct the flow in most of us and he simply used the left side of his brain for the technical aspects of his expression. That's probably why he played left-handed because the right hand was doing all the fret work while the left hand did the easy bit. Drugs don't produce intelligence and many of the things he said in interviews had a logical yet almost mystical substance to them which was far beyond mere incoherent druggie rambling.

  • @Kuzarkit

i truly think he was a mad genius, just in a spiritual way. Left brain controls things like math, organization, speech, thought pattern ie Einstein, bill gates, etc. Right Brain controls: creativity, music, arts, spirituality. ie, Jimi, Mozart, etc,. So i think he was just as much a genius as Einstein, but in his "field".

"Sleep paralysis is when, during awakening or falling asleep, a person is aware but unable to move or speak.[1][2] During an episode, one may hear, feel, or see things that are not there.[1] It often results in fear.[1] Episodes generally last less than a couple of minutes.[2] It may occur as a single episode or be recurrent.[1]
The condition may occur in those who are otherwise healthy, those with narcolepsy, or may run in families as a result of specific genetic changes.[2] The condition can be triggered by sleep deprivation, psychological stress, or abnormal sleep cycles.[2] The underlying mechanism is believed to involve a dysfunction in REM sleep.[2] Diagnosis is based on a person's description.[2] Other conditions that can present similarly include narcolepsy, atonic seizure, and hypokalemic periodic paralysis.[2]
Treatment options for sleep paralysis have been poorly studied.[1] It is recommended that people be reassured that the condition is common and generally not serious.[1] Other efforts that may be tried include sleep hygiene, cognitive behavioral therapy, and antidepressants.[1]
Between 8% and 50% of people experience sleep paralysis at some time.[2][3] About 5% of people have regular episodes.[2] Males and females are affected equally.[2] Sleep paralysis has been described throughout history.[1] It is believed to have played a role in the creation of stories about alien abduction and other paranormal events.[1]"

I HAVE BEEN THERE, FREAKS YOU OUT BECAUSE YOUR IN A REM SLEEP KIND OF, I REMEMBER BEING PARALIZED BY FEAR, I REMEMBER WHEN I HAD KIDNEY SURGERY IN 2016, THE FIRST NIGHT I WAS HOME, A MAN WALKED IN TO MY ROOM GRABBED MY RIGHT TOE, AND WALKED AROUND THE LEFT SIDE OF MY BED, I WAS IN A LOT OF PAIN AFTER THE 2ND SURGERY, AND I SAID TO MY SELF, LORD JESUS, HE'S GOING TO RAPE ME, AND I SAT STRAIGHT UP, BECAUSE I HAD PAIN, AND NO ONE WAS THERE.... Sorry for the caps, my fingers always slip on that key, but it's a horrible dream sequence, but can be beautiful @ the same time..

A "night mare" is actually named from the feeling that there is a horse upon you, keeping you from moving, even though you are partly conscious... you aren't sleeping. I've had several.. you try to jerk your body awake... but you're stuck
"The earliest origin of the word seems to indicate the effects of sleep paralysis, which causes the person dreaming to wake up and be unable to move. The first use of the word in the context of having a very unpleasant and distressing experience when awake seems to be somewhere around the early 1800s.

I don't wanna sound crazy, but it sounds like Hendrix was on the verge of experiencing astral projection. Sleep paralysis, and the "zzzzz" sound he makes at about 3:10 makes me think he's talking about feeling vibrations. From what I've read, paralysis and vibrations are what happens right before you astral project. I've had both of those happen to me, but I always panic too much to let it go any farther.

There is a photocopy of a manuscript in Jimi's handwriting of the original draft of Purple Haze in which he wrote the line "Purple Haze Jesus saves." Listen to the lyrics of "Message of Love": "'cuz in the eyes of God, you're both children to Him." and "We're travelling the speed of a reborn man."

As far as Jimi changing his opinions: We have the "Purple Haze" manuscript (late 1966) and the performance of "Message of Love," on January 1, 1970, which spans all but the last nine months of his international career. And the posthumous "The Cry of Love," containing the songs "Ezy Ryder," "Astro Man," "Angel," & "Belly Button Window," all of which mention "Heaven" in some way, do not suggest that his thoughts changed within those nine months either.

@xdeathrowx i thought i was going crazy! I experienced that and it felt like i was about to go to another place, almost like i was falling thru life. It happened twice and the first time i got so scared because it was a completely new feeling. The second time it happened to me was the same night and it felt like it was 5 minutes after the first one, i was more aware and tried to relax and let it take over but i snapped out of it. i cant remember why tho.
