I’ve come to love watching Matt. His questions are so well phrased and foundational. “Are you comfortable describing your style?” “What’s your relationship like with the guitar?” They’re thoughtful and give people the space to reflect and constructively speak about the goods, bads, triumphs and challenges of making music.
People are really picking on her for having a simpler approach to the guitar, meanwhile they glorify guys like Kurt Cobain, Tony Iommi and many others for knowing how to be simple. I love both artists that I mentioned, but I just needed to show how sexist some people can be. Truly ashamed.
If you don't know CW...what they fuck are you doing in life? One of the best female artists out there. I love that she encapsulates so many styles. Folk, Goth, Doom, Black Metal, and even a bit of Industrial and electronic. She's more about simplicity and atmosphere than guitar snobbery.
I saw Chelsea frontrow at a bar in Portland, OR in 2012, and she was playing a dark-brown woodgrain Jaguar-I'd never seen one like it before. I've been a fan ever since. While her performance was great, I remember it being clear that she was painfully uncomfortable onstage. It's a trip seeing her now in a Fender promo. I saw her live about a year ago for the first time since that 2012 show, and she commanded the stage with a lot more confidence. It's been very neat to see her evolve over the past five years.
The guitar playing on her latest album Hiss Spun is really innovative and challenging. Troy Van Leeuwen's guitar playing on Hiss Spun is particularly compelling. I've not heard this type of abstract guitar being playing since some of the music Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew did back in the 80's with David Bowie and other artists.
I love her so much. Seeing her live was amazing. She's inspiring and beautiful, real, and raw. There's to any fake people in the music industry. She's not afraid to be herself
Not sure if this is the right setting for Chelsea. She's a solid player in the context of her music, but she's not a technical player. Chelsea's main bag is the whole of her music. Those riffs when isolated don't sound like much, but they're unbelievable when you add in her excellent rhythm section, synth, and voice. Her latest album is a masterpiece! Doomier players when isolated are never going to sound as good as straightforward player. What they have to offer is the complete unit of their sound.
Well said Paul. I totally agree and probably fall into that category myself. It's about the whole picture rather than the parts. I'll be seeing her in a few weeks in SLC, my 4th Chelsea show in 3 years. The last show was in Denver w/ Wovenhand. So good.
michael aryn Yeah I saw her on the Wovenhand tour as well. It's taken her a bit to open up, but she commands the stage now. Carrion Flowers live was unbelievable. Once you get Chelsea, there's no turning back lol. She has something in catalog for everyone. Women like her, Annie Clark, Wata, Zola Jesus, and Eivor should be getting the push in mainstream. Women that do their own thing, and are inspiring intellectually. Anyone that doubts Chelsea from this video alone would do well to listen to the albums.
She's certainly not someone to have here if the goal is to show off intricate guitar licks, but maybe that's the point. Her music is based on very skeletal and repetitive guitar riffs. She's not someone who dazzles in this kind of forum, but it's nice to see Fender giving her this exposure.
I am as well, Chelsea is a word of mouth musician that doesn't get a lot of mainstream publicity. I was just sort of irritated with some of the comments not getting why she's there. Someone who hasn't heard her music wouldn't get it. Chelsea is like Buzz from Melvins. They give no shits about technical prowess. Their primary concern is what the song is going for.
Before I am critical of her technique I give her this: she has a voice with a guitar. Most guitarists are too busy copying someone or figuring out what people are playing to have a voice of their own.
It's just the change in volume between string to string, note to note that she achieves by plucking the strings lighter or harder. You can do volume swells using the volume control as well if that's your thing. Just a fancy word to describe something simple
Jazzmaster in my opinion is the best Fender Looks hot as hell, and when you put some naughty P90s in them Oh boy... But also still retains its original good look, sometimes a humbucker or p90 in a strat doesn't look at that good, unless it's a zebra one with black pick guard, it's not as noticeable and ugly But yeah, love Jazzmasters, and combined only with distortion and Friedman amps To me it's like Fenders equivalent of Gibsons les Paul, though I don't like gibson, it's a good simile Because you can go the normal trem it has or a Tele bridge like how Elliot guitars does And looks great and sounds great with humbuckers, What do you other viewers think?
Fuck, am I alone in saying she reminds me of Kurt Cobain. The style, simplicity but melodic dark tone. Haunting and the talent she possesses is waiting to found. When people understand the complexity and layering of her music, having to listen to it around 3 or 4 times to truly grasp the songs, people who like bans like guns an roses for example, will drop their inhibitions of good rock music being fast and technical all the time and see that another form of the quality found in genres is from layering and different areas of clef, filled in by simple yet effective unique sounds. If the guitar snobs can do this, whether they’re patient enough to listen to them more than once, will realise what they’ve missed out on. Technical is not always better.
All of you complaining about her playing, look her up. When you hear her voice you’ll be like, “oh I get it now.” Jimmy page had some simple shit. Couldn’t sing. Some white stripes stuff sounds retarded by itself.Simple is often better when trying to create something memorable.
Interesting. As someone who is always struggling to absorb and comprehend theory and play ever more complicated rhythm and lead parts, it's weird to see someone with such a stripped down and bare approach to the guitar. And I don't mean in a bad way - she has her own style, which is what playing guitar is all about. That said, I wonder if she is more suited to play bass? The way she plays and talks about how she writes music makes me think she'd be a much better bass player. Anyway, interesting interview.
I was thinking the same thing. I hate to say this because I know the mass wave of hate I'm about to inspire but I don't think shed be half as famous as she is if she wasn't an attractive white female. Don't get me wrong she's a great musician and I love her writing, but I know half a dozen people that do this exact type of music and do it really well but are nowhere near being discovered just because they aren't popular or attractive.
"totally" to silverslither8. Pedal Files makes a good point and I've been witness to a lot of that bias as well. However, Chelsea is a great writer and that is what makes her stand out. Listen to her music. She has a great voice with perfect pitch. Maybe that's why she likes her guitar to be so off kilter, to offset the great singing, tight drumming, and sequenced keyboard parts. I think she's a gothic P.J.Harvey, in terms of guitar playing, and I love it.
Well she's not a "guitar player" or "bass player" in a band really, she is the leader of a solo project which relies heavily on atmosphere and her vocals. Whether she plays bass or guitar is not really going to make a huge difference to the sound of her band as far as I can see, but I think it's way easier for her to write songs on guitar than bass, it's easier to just strum a few chords or come up with a riff (sure, you can do the riff on the bass as well, Sabbath style, but you get my point).
Matt Sweeney? the dude from the NOISEY videos? lol ok. didnt really show the sound of a Jazzmaster, thats the sound of some fuzz or distortion pedal. Play clean, Play each pickup, etc. this wasnt helpful fender trying to be cool i guess
I think I'll need to listen to some of her music because in this fender ad she sounds like a beginner abusing over drive has no idea what notes she's probably playing it's just terrible playing! !!
just because she isnt playing blues licks and 12 notes a millisecond does not mean she cant play. It's all about rhythm and feeling the music at the end of the day.. if you can just shred a bunch of notes but dont feel the music it'll just sound like generic shit.. and every old head plays boring ass blues licks all day. It's BORING.
Carson Goodson chelsea wolfe is a brilliant very unique musician who is NOT Marilyn Manson in drag as Manson is rather rude. who thumps an interviewer's balls? rude of him.
She's not much of a guitarist it sounds like a person just learning to play ..her music as a whole with the rest of the band is great.. but isolated it doesn't sound like much ..by all means it's a compliment she's able to make something great out nothing ..
wild nature Guitar is just a small part in her music. These simple riffs with an atmospheric tone sounds great as a whole composition with her vocals and electronic stuff. She never meant to be an amazing technical guitarist.
And one of your songs is in a new Jaguar(car) commercial? Like her? Roland? -N-Terain?Are you on tour constantly? Like her? Hmmm.... didn't think so. Good luck with that closed minded attitude.
Wow! This is like watching a noob picking up the guitar for the first time at a music store. However, I'll take this than listening to those stupid mainstream electronic musicians out there. At least this is organic/acoustic sounding so kudos to you, Chelsea!
Hey...Just listen to this shit! A fucking 6 yr old could play this with 15 minutes instruction! For Fender to post this crap when there are THOUSANDS of unknown brilliant guitarists playing their product with no recognition is an insult!!!
Move on to a different ,and safer style of music my friend. There is enough of that out there. Some folks, myself included, like to hear music that that is not conventional.Simple as that.
I actually have very eclectic taste in music. However I do prefer to listen to artists who have actually taken the time to learn how to play their instrument. I do listen to "doom and gloom" music at times, but this is just plain bad. I'm a big fan of Fender guitars but I'm shocked that they would feature such an amateur guitarist to promote one of their guitars. Simple as that.
And one of your songs is in a new Jaguar(car) commercial? Like her? Roland? -N-Terain?Are you on tour constantly? Like her? Hmmm.... didn't think so. Good luck with that closed minded attitude.
Ok, so you copied and pasted your comment from below. Very creative. If you were a musician or played an instrument you would understand how horrible her playing is. If commercials are hiring her they are truly desperate. And Fender must be desperate as well. She plays like a stoned 10 yr old kid who just picked up their first guitar and is trying to annoy the neighbors. I'll clue you in, if you see somebody playing an entire song using just their middle finger, and it sounds more like a tuning session than a song, it means that they suck at the guitar. It's scary that the bar for music has been set so low that people actually think she is talented. I read a comment below where someone compared her to Black Sabbath. Wow...i'ts painfully obvious that they have never listened to Black Sabbath.

Fender - stop using animal bone for the nut. No excuse or reason for it in this day in age. It's ostentatious and illogical.

This guy is the best musician-interviewer.
it's true! I really want to speak with him!
Michał Kilijanek One day, he'll be interviewing me about my musical prowess...
let'ss go! Would you make a band with me XD
Hoël caullery kempf And my guitar preferences and influences....
Hoël caullery kempf I'm a country/ bluegrass/ rockabilly player....
I have never felt more understood by an artist on how music works for me
Chelsea Wolfe is the most exciting musician of this millennium (according to me). Her musical variety is impressive and her tone is infectious

Matt is such a great interviewer! and Chelsea looks very comfortable here, what a human being
She is my absolute favorite musician of this age... i am totally enchanted by her
Matt Sweeney interviews are always fantastic because you can tell he genuinely loves talking with all the musicians and listening to them play.

50% of comments: "We love you Chelsea!"
Other 50%: "wtf is this shit"
Really cool that Fender decided to choose Chelsea Wolfe to interview. Makes me like them more.

In total agreement of Paul Stout.

One of the great artists today.
Matz Chase she really is. It’s like sabbath being fronted by soiuxise sue.
Trance rock “in the cinematic realm”. That’s also how Black Sabbath described working on their first album and coming together as a group.
we need a natural jazzmaster with black pickguard
Great choices, Fender! Big fan of Chelsea Wolfe.
Candy Apple Red, black, and cream… dream color combination. 😩😮💨👌
that fuzz tone is killer at the start of video. not too perfect sounds fucking perfect ❤️
i love chelsea so much it physically hurts
Before I am critical of her technique I give her this: she has a voice with a guitar. Most guitarists are too busy copying someone or figuring out what people are playing to have a voice of their own.
she copies every grunge and rock ive ever heard
about time!! love chelsea and her work, glad she's on the platform
That's literally how I am with my guitar!
I love her more than most things.
La amo!!!!!
It was thanks to this interview that I discovered her music.
Chelsea rocks! Awesome to hear only her parts for once
Her style is mezmerizing...
Kinda 70s Black Sabbath sort of sound...
I gather that you have never listened to the legendary Black Sabbath if you are making that comparison.
R Cool...
She's actually heavily inspired by them.
Tony Iommi used P-90s on his SG and the Jazzmaster pickup has a similar sound
Trance rock “in the cinematic realm”. That’s how Black Sabbath described working on their first album and coming together as a group.
really dig that chick, she seems true
Good interview, great looking guitar! Guitar Moves guy, woo!
At 3:01 what are volume swells?
It's just the change in volume between string to string, note to note that she achieves by plucking the strings lighter or harder. You can do volume swells using the volume control as well if that's your thing. Just a fancy word to describe something simple
Great interview, love her music.
hiss spun is like her "Experimental Doom Metal" album
Brilliant Artist
Even the sound coming from tiny microphones they're speaking in is cool.
Chelsea is a worldwide treasure
2:40 Survive. .
Hermosa Jazz, ese color está brutal, con ese sonido tan denso como su look, Chelsea es genial.
✊🏾🖤
La jazzmaster más linda que he visto 😍
Super cool!
This is totally the style of music Iike to play, so you've sold me Chelsea - I'm buying a Jazzmaster
What bums me out are how small minded guitar players are. That's why they're players, not artists. And not everyone will like an artists work.
That's a really good way to put it, unfortunately true lol
My "agreed" reply was to Dan. I love Chelsea
Love ya Chelsea ❤️
Empress of the shadows
how can one person be that amazing??
She's so pretty and great
I love you, Chelsea!
Sensational
Jazzmaster in my opinion is the best Fender
Looks hot as hell, and when you put some naughty P90s in them
Oh boy...
But also still retains its original good look, sometimes a humbucker or p90 in a strat doesn't look at that good,

But yeah, love Jazzmasters, and combined only with distortion and Friedman amps
To me it's like Fenders equivalent of Gibsons les Paul, though I don't like gibson, it's a good simile
Because you can go the normal trem it has or a Tele bridge like how Elliot guitars does
And looks great and sounds great with humbuckers,
What do you other viewers think?
Guitars, I don't like them, but I still love em
Go listen to the Mrs.Piss album they did. So good.
does she use crazy tuning?like sonic youth?
she mainly uses c standard and like tunings based around c
Matt!

Always a cool rocker chic.
Chelsea Wolfe signature please.
that is such a hot guitar
She's so cool
Any shit talkers, first go write and record 5 albums of innovative genre-bending music, and THEN maybe you can open your yap to criticize Ms. Wolfe.
its youtube - people can say what they want ... people give shit to the biggest rockstars - so what get a life
OMA. Those get away sticks
Like as soon as I saw it was Matt Sweeney.
And doesn't that particular guitar look even more bad-ass than an SG?
What happened to her ring finger?
This chick sounds like me at Guitar Center.
Lmao...but she's a great singer tbh
So fine,.. 💐 wish I could've given her an emoji guitar... Oh 🎸
i hope they let her keep that.
She’s a badass!
I thought this was Darth Vader from the thumbnail.
All of you complaining about her playing, look her up. When you hear her voice you’ll be like, “oh I get it now.” Jimmy page had some simple shit. Couldn’t sing. Some white stripes stuff sounds retarded by itself.Simple is often better when trying to create something memorable.

Self taught! It shows😂
scorpio...
Chelsea, yummy!
Chelsea, will u marry me?
Only if you teach her how to play the guitar properly.
Those riffs might be good within the context of a song but on their own they sound very amateurish.
Did she use one finger for that whole song??? LMFAO
That's how you spot an amateur guitarist!
Matt Sweeney? the dude from the NOISEY videos? lol ok. didnt really show the sound of a Jazzmaster, thats the sound of some fuzz or distortion pedal. Play clean, Play each pickup, etc. this wasnt helpful fender trying to be cool i guess
the start riff sounded alright, the constant chord strumming was alright to some extent (she used a little too much) and the rest of it sucked
I've never heard of her. Cool name "Wolfe", ehhh guitar player
jmanxoom watch her live videos. and her playing Iron Moon with nothing but her guitar and voice and playing her tiny desk concert
chromesthesia I'm good, I've seen enough to make my decision- Deftones!
I think I'll need to listen to some of her music because in this fender ad she sounds like a beginner abusing over drive has no idea what notes she's probably playing it's just terrible playing! !!
check her new album. itll make sense then
just because she isnt playing blues licks and 12 notes a millisecond does not mean she cant play. It's all about rhythm and feeling the music at the end of the day.. if you can just shred a bunch of notes but dont feel the music it'll just sound like generic shit.. and every old head plays boring ass blues licks all day. It's BORING.
who is this girl
CG Music&Football Chelsea Wolfe!
Marilyn Manson in drag
Carson Goodson chelsea wolfe is a brilliant very unique musician who is NOT Marilyn Manson in drag as Manson is rather rude. who thumps an interviewer's balls? rude of him.
What the hell was that, almost like lil wayne
Nah, dude. Lil Wayne's so much better at guitar.
listen to her full songs
her playing i meant to be an atmospheric sound to mix with her vocals. It sounds really good in the mix
Not everyone is like what you are accustomed to nerd
She's not much of a guitarist it sounds like a person just learning to play ..her music as a whole with the rest of the band is great.. but isolated it doesn't sound like much ..by all means it's
a compliment she's able to make something great out nothing ..
what's is the shit? Any beginning guitarist will play, then what that plays
wild nature simple =/= bad
wild nature Guitar is just a small part in her music. These simple riffs with an atmospheric tone sounds great as a whole composition with her vocals and electronic stuff. She never meant to be an amazing technical guitarist.
jaqb17 I want to check out her band.
Constable 1976 listen to 16 psyche. That's her new single and exactly what she plays at the beginning
karatekid951 Thanks....
Am I the only one that thing this is the farthest thing from talent or music either? 😂
Yes.
yes, you are
boo.
that sucks really
And one of your songs is in a new Jaguar(car) commercial? Like her? Roland? -N-Terain?Are you on tour constantly? Like her? Hmmm.... didn't think so. Good luck with that closed minded attitude.
You hit the nail on the head. She sucks.
Gloom and doom. No thanks.
Wow! This is like watching a noob picking up the guitar for the first time at a music store. However, I'll take this than listening to those stupid mainstream electronic musicians out there. At least this is organic/acoustic sounding so kudos to you, Chelsea!
You can have organic sounds in electronic music though?
Fender is getting hard up for artists it appears...This is crap!
Hey...Just listen to this shit! A fucking 6 yr old could play this with 15 minutes instruction! For Fender to post this crap when there are THOUSANDS of unknown brilliant guitarists playing their product with no recognition is an insult!!!
This has to be a joke. She sounds horrible.
R she does not. go look up some live videos of her. though i wonder if she is playing standard tuning instead of dropped down to d or something.
Move on to a different ,and safer style of music my friend. There is enough of that out there. Some folks, myself included, like to hear music that that is not conventional.Simple as that.
