You should torque the Positive terminal BEFORE attaching the Negative terminal to prevent causing an arc then your wrench hits the engine mount or aircraft structure. A good practice is remove the negative side first when removing a battery and connect the negative side last when installing a battery so there is no way you can short your wrench to a ground point. If you short your wrench or other tool to ground the chances are very good you will damage something, the arc will burn a pit in the aluminum or worse in the engine mount when the battery is in close to the engine mount. A arc pit in the mount can lead to a catastrophic failure of the engine mount over time. Battery electrolyte is Sulfuric Acid and water about a 30% mixture

Most batteries use sulfuric acid! If you take the negativity battery wire off first it cuts down the chance of sparks. Also contact it last.

Disconnect negative terminal first and don't use pliers!

Watching this done the wrong way just makes me cringe. NEGATIVE than Positive when removing. Positive then negative when installing.

You should remove ground wire first.
    But good video.

You should not need an STC for a new battery.

Title 14 CFR 43 Appendix A allows the pilot to replace and service batteries within limitations. However, if a pilot preforms any preventive maintenance they are required to follow the same rules and regulations as the A&P mechanic in part 43.13 Performance rules (general) and 43.9 record entries. This requires pilots to have the current Service Manual, special tools (torque wrench) hydrometer for batteries, multimeter testing the voltage, thermometer for the outside the 70 to 90 degree F and so on.
The torque in accordance with the Concord manual is 50 plus or minus 2 inch-pounds. Also, always disconnect the NEGATIVE BATTERY FIRST and INSTALL THE GROUND CABLE LAST.
WARNING: Low Capacity Hazard. Aircraft batteries are certified to have a certain minimum capacity for emergency operations in the event of an electrical system generator failure. NEVER USE A BATTERY WITH LESS THAN 80% or rated capacity and never “JUMP START” an aircraft with a “DEAD” or discharged battery. How did you test this???
You logbook (record entry) endorsement does not meet part 43.9 requirements as it does not reference the data (step-by-step) procedures you were required to follow. As an A&P/IA I don’t know what OPS check OK means. Did you check the voltage before installation or the specific gravity before installation?
This UA-cam video is setter a lot of people up for disaster in my opinion. Needless to say, I am shocked by what I just watched as a retired FAA inspector but not surprised.

You say the torque is 50 +- 2 inch pounds but on the battery it says 70 inch pounds

Actually, when first charging a battery on initial charge they should be charged using the constant current method. No need to charge then charge again and so on...

"logbook endorsement" lmao. There is no "wiggle room" the requirements for logging maintenance and preventive maintenance are clearly spelled out in § 43.9.

Great video as always. I think another great topic would be- firewall damage.

Thanks for the tip, might actually cover that here soon. Good thing to be on the look out for when renting from flight schools and not always obvious on your basic preflight

Awesome, I look forward to it. I agree with you as well, that form of damage is not really visible, nor is it discussed much. I only recently found out about it. Thxs for all the great videos on your channel.

Yes sounds funny until you are the one paying for upkeep. More than costs, its wasteful, and just not good stewardship of a machine and its parts - throwing stuff down. Soft aluminum getting bent up, scarred. Demonstrates a lack of caring. It offends everything in my being. I care about the work I do. Every step of the way. I don't understand people who do not: some out of stupidity or ignorance, poor training, lack of appreciation, but more often I believe laziness. I take care of things, and I strive to be careful every step of the way. I have little respect or patience for those who do not. Poor quality in small tasks = poor in larger. Now let's make today great!

This should be titled "how NOT to change an aircraft battery” the cringe factor is through the roof on this.
