    Great video. Excellent treatment of the subject. I remember Buicks of that era for their quirky starters and short gear shifts.
    Original!

    Nice car, my friend had a 55 and it was the first car that I ever saw with the gas pedal starter. I'd keep it original and just clean the crap out of it and fix what you have to.

      Electric fuel pumps should be mounted close to the gas tank and NEVER in the engine compartment. Electric pumps push fuel better than they pull fuel .

    I remember seeing a 56 Buick two door Century in my town that was a party machine for the town drunks. I thought what a great car if restored. I ended up buying it off a used car lot a broken down junker. I worked on it for three years and it was gorgeous. But I needed to sell it to buy a house that I still live in. Thank you 1956 Buick.😢😊

    Great ole Buick! I think '56 was the best year for cars, before they started cutting cirners and using cheaper parts. The '56 Chevy was a nice car too, real solid. Thanls for posting!

    Hi Dean..great car and kudos to you for saving it..hey find an old Chilton's or motors manual and it will have transmission troubleshooting section in it for the dynaflow..I'd bet any rubber or plastic bushings between the shift linkage and trans are worn out or missing completely considering the age of the car..also with old cars like that and just putting around I'd spray the chrome down with wd40 and go over it with 4-0 steel wool to clean it up..doing that and seeing it shine a bit always encouraged me to work on making it look better and continuing to work on it..I've subscribed to your channel and I'm looking fwd to another video. If you need that trans troubleshooting literature give me a shout, I'm in Ct. and I'd be happy to mail it up to New York..keep up the good work!

    Yep, keep it all original if possible!! Back in the day when I worked on my tri five Chevy, I had a U shaped box wrench, wide at the base )about 5 inches)and the two upright ends were about 3 inches high. It was made specifically for those starters. Great video!

    I have a '56 Buick Special 4 door Riviera I have owned for 35 years. I was just a kid when I acquired it. Now I am an old man but the car still looks the same! The carburetor you have on your car is a two barrel Stromberg. They either came with a Carter or a Stromberg. You have a standard hot air choke from the manifold. The electric device you showed in the video is the Startex switch for the throttle starter.

    • @NoPaintGarage
      @NoPaintGarage  4 роки тому +2

      Very cool you've had it that long. I did eventually figure out that the switch was the starter switch.

    The reason these old buicks are hardly rusty underneath is because when the Dyanflow leaks it gets everywhere. Best rust proofing ever.

  • @stiggowitz1

    I've owned 4 of them and the main issue with the "vacuum" fuel pump is the windshield wipers are vacuum operated from the fuel pump, at least the three 50's; 54.55, 56 were. the 61 I believe had electric. The issue was that as the diaphragm in the fuel pump aged and the wipers were running, the pump would draw oil from the crankcase and would leak. the solution was to replace the pump or if you were on the cheap you would reroute the vacuum line to a spot on the intake manifold, but when you gave it the gas the vacuum would be drawn away from the wipers and the wipers would stop until you let up. Lots of fun.

    You can buy and/ or make a adapter to put any trans on that engine. The buick nailheads were a very popular engine swap back in the day. It would be cool to see you swap a turbo 350 or a 700 r4 into that car, and leave it looking stock then put a 4 barrel on the nailhead with some peroid correct speed parts and dress up under the hood. Dont restore it just make a down and dirty street cruiser/ hot rod

    Just a little tip: Next time you start a car that hasn't been started in a decade or more remove the fuel line that goes from the tank to the fuel pump and run a hose from the fuel pump to a gerry can so you can start the thing with clean fuel and not drag a bunch of rust into the carb. Really cool project I hope you keep it period correct.

    I'd be tempted to fix the original trans and get things purring. There are plenty of old classics with everything from SBC engines and TH350's to big blocks and Muncies, LS swaps and even Hellcat plants. It's more work, maybe, but I would think more rewarding to keep it original if you can. BUT- it's your car. Do what makes you happy. That old girl deserves to live on, for sure. Transmission fluid is transmission fluid. The cheap stuff from Walmart is as good as any, it just doesn't have as many additives like the higher dollar stuff and it doesn't have the "name" which is half the price point.

    • @NoPaintGarage
      @NoPaintGarage  4 роки тому

      I never really thought about it like that. I'm sure you are right . The less additives the better for these old gm cars. They call for dextron type A which isn't even sold anymore and is very basic fluid that had no additives.

  • @volgaboatman7225
    @volgaboatman7225 3 роки тому +1

    You probable already figured this out about the fuel pump. When using an electric fuel pump, these pumps PUSH better than PULL. Always mount electric pumps close to the fuel tank. Every thing else being equal, it will work.

    nice , them old buicks always seem to run .
    the biggest problem i've run into on the early buicks , the torque tube . That limits you on transmissions . the 39 i did i had to build a new rear suspension . The 27 T i reworked with the 322 nail head and clapped out dynaflow , i did a willcap adapter to a th350 . then reworked the rear suspension with ladder bars and a camaro rear end . All do able , just more work.
    Dyna flows are kind of a pain to rebuild . good parts are hard to find , but do able .
    they did drill some auto cranks . the last 322 was drilled i had come in the shop . but you won't know until you get trans out .

    • @NoPaintGarage
      @NoPaintGarage  4 роки тому +2

      Good info. It would be nice to put a th400 behind the 322. I'll have to look into that adapter. Was it for a Chevy pattern or bop? I've heard of other people also using the Camaro rear end under these cars with 67-72 chevy c10 trailing arms

    • @chevahaulic
      @chevahaulic 4 роки тому +1

      it was for the chevy bell housing pattern . the C10 truck arms would be a good swap . I made them for that 39 Buick . took forever to build those .

    It should have a 2 bbl carb not a 1 bbl.
    I had one when I was 16, a very long time ago . I didn't care for the vacuum operated windshield wipers, but you could add a vacuum can with a one way valve that would help a lot.
    Those were pretty good cars, the dynafo transmission couldn't handle a lot of abuse, just go easy, and if it's good it should last a long time. If not, it's a pain to pull, either pull the engine, or rear axle, it has an enclosed drive shaft

    I would advise to leave it stock. Trust me I love manual transmissions so the desire to do that part of the swap would be really strong for me too. I have seen people make their own custom adapters for pretty much everything. I'd be surprised if you were totally stuck with that transmission.

    Low pump pressure, so swap the torque converter or any hydromatic from olds, Cadillac or pontiac will also fit. I do believe that the transmission bellhousing unbolts from the transmission in those... go look at those older transmissions from those cars in a wrecking yard. Hollander makes a exchange book for older model rigs and it shows what parts interchange with other cars. I had a cadillac that the starter was out and it was over a hundred and some so waiting for coin to build up... lucky me, neighbor looks at the starter laying there and said to me that he just changed his starter in his ford pickup and they looked the same to him so we compared them to find out that a reman for a ford truck was less than thirty dollars bolted right in and walla boom, it started bing bang. A Hollander parts exchange book is several hundred dollars and usually only wrecking yards have them. But there is ways if you only explore them

      @@NoPaintGarage That is a buick special. They all had 2 bbl carbs. The centurys, supers and roadmasters had the 4 bbl carb. And yes it is a 322 motor.

    If it was mine, I would swap in either a 401 or a 425 nailhead and a Super turbine 400 from a 64 and swap out the old torque tube setup but keep the originals around so they could be reinstalled if wanted. It would look stock but have way more power and a better transmission. (interesting thing with the sper turbine 400 is it is a dual pump transmission so it can be push started like the Dont-a-Flow)

    Keep it original. Only exception are for things like replacing the original single chamber master cylinder with a dual chamber m/c. I lost hydraulics on the freeway once. If it weren't for the dual chamber m/c, I might not be here.

      Yeah it's getting dual master, and front disk conversion

    Id rather have this Buick than my 2000 LeSabre! Easier to work on and stylish! 2000 LeSabre is pretty good car when things work right, but too much electronics like most newer cars!😁🤟🔧

    I'd say you done pretty good bud, she sounds great! I think something like a later 401 nailhead and trans would be a nice swap for it, kinda go with that sleeper vibe you were talking about lol.

      @@NoPaintGarage the later buick v8s especially the 455s have a weak oiling system. You would be better off with a 364/401/425 with a nailhead switch pitch th400. You will need to convert to a open driveline. Since yours is a 56 you just need a 3rd member from a 61-62 full size buick as they were open drive then. Bolts in. 4 link it and put a driveshaft in. The dynaflow thrustplate works for th400s. Just have to drill out the mounting holes for the trans mount
