That's a real beauty... It'll clean up incredibly well!
If you get the chance, BEFORE you change the oil, dump a couple cans of transmission fluid in the engine.
Fire it up and just let it idle for a couple of hours.... Then do your oil change.
That "tick" is probably just a collapsed lifter, and the little bit of smoking is probably from some stuck rings.
The transition fluid should free everything up... Just DON'T REV IT while it's idling with the transmission fluid in the engine.
    Oh... The clock.
Pull it out of the dash, be careful of hitting the dial... But shoot a bit of electrical contact cleaner down the set knob hole.
Let it dry out, reinstall it and see if that didn't fix it.... They're usually just gummed up from sitting.
Buick went to 12v in 1955. Very reliable, even then.
Don't worry about the oil bath air cleaner being a fire hazard... Just make sure you never overfill the thing.
Those old oil bath setups are actually the best filtration system anyone could ever want.
    Oh... And the Dynaflow
    ..
Make sure you service it BY THE BOOK.
There are a couple band adjustments to be made every so often... And if you keep it in tolerance and the fluid is clean, it'll run reliably forever.
The 1956 version of the Dynaflow was the toughest and most reliable of the whole lot.
    Cheers!

We had a family friend when I was a kid that owned Buicks of this era,a '56 white over red Special four door and a '57 Special two door sedan mostly white with a red lower panel,I loved those cars then and still do today, that's a sweet Century you have there.

That car is so cool! As a young lad I would have never liked a car like this but now all these old non muscle car classics that are 2 doors look so sweet! It's so nice to see a car that Bubba didn't hack up or mess with adding auto zone steering wheel and goofy parts.

The Buick Century was a sort of muscle car of it's day. Yes, muscular compared to others at 220 HP. Chevs were lighter and therefore faster.

Yes-only original once-I kept my 56 Chevy original that I bought in 1988 until I sold it in 2000. Some jackass probably couldn't wait to drop a crate motor in and put mags on it. Mr. Gasket cheap valve covers and little steering wheels and they think it makes them a real 'car guy'. The car would no longer have the original charm but many do not see it. Same with these dodos who put big bulging hood scoops to make up for the non-bulge in their pants-dugh.

I suspect a stuck exhaust valve, a bad cam lobe, a bent pushrod or a bad lifter. Good oil pressure is however a good sign.

@@up-n-runnin377 My car is a 4 door hardtop which uses a different windshield than the coupes. They are narrower from top to bottom. Probably 25 years or so ago I was able then to locate a replacement windshield out of an old glass shop in Portland, Oregon. Insurance covered my cost but even in probably 1996 or so that replacement windshield cost about 1000 bucks. It took me and the professional glass installer over 8 hours to fit the windshield. It didn't leak back then but the rubber seal has shrunk over the years so it does leak a bit now.

Have you checked an oil level before cranking the engine? Does it have a manual hand start lever, so you could at least try to turn it by hand? No oil check, no coolant check. Very brave man. 😮. Anyways, very nice car😊

    • @TruthPoliceLegend
      @TruthPoliceLegend 10 місяців тому

The best way: lift off the distributor (chevys) hook a drill motor in the old pump shaft that mates to
the distributor and spin up pressure. I did that with my 62 Vette in 1995 after it sat for 15 years by the previous owner. Its been running fine with no engine rebuild since then. The car oil pressure gauge read 50 psi as it would still work without the car running or the key on.

The interior green is great but I'd repaint the exterior as (an original 1950's Buick color) a more or less dark green. I really think it would have set things off with this car to begin with had it been done so from the beginning. Then again, I guess someone wanted that sea-green color. The paint job IS in great condition though.

Buick went to the regular GM Hydramatic in 1967... Before that, they had the previously mentioned Dynaflow, then sort of developed their own version of the Hydramatic called "Super Turbine"... Which still wasn't as great as the "regular" GM unit.
BUT... of those old style Dynaflows, the 1956 version was probably the most reliable of them.
My uncle and his buddies used to 1/4 mile nothing but 56 Buicks.... They always rebuilt the transmissions with reverse valve bodies (can't remember who made those) and would actually get high 14's and low 15's outta those things.
I had a 56 Special coupe with a 4 barrel and dual exhaust when I was in high school in the Eighties... It was pretty damn quick "stock".
I sure do miss that car.
