@@darrellcampbell5022 You are kind of saying that europeans were ahead of their time? I don't see it that way really. It's more like different styles were popular or natural in Europe or in the US at different times. (Donna Summer recorded in Germany.)
Sure, most intruments, scales, chords and even the music itself came from Europe to America in the 1700s to 1900s, but the free spirited american take on these fundamental elements influenced europeans a lot!
It was especially the african emphasis on 6-8 and 3-4 polyrhythms that made our music take some new paths in rhythmical improvisation. So the fact that european musicians in turn continued to develop american variants and styles like jazz, funk/disco and rock to this day is pretty natural. And also that it never kept the exact same pace or style as in the US. Because our cultures (or peoples) are not exactly the same.

ABBA was the only group that was always able to be at the top of, or even ahead, of music trends, always producing the best and most unique instrumentation and arrangements, that by their own merits were and are, instantly attractive to the ear.
The genius of ABBA is that they were the ONLY group who produced amazing melodies too, one song after the other, with interesting lyrics you could actually hear and voices and harmonies that were consistently and unbelievably tight. They sounded catchy and so easy on the ear, people thought they were simple melodies, but other artists who tried to do and play their music have all come away in amazement at how complicated the chord placements and progressions really were.
ABBA is not easy for anyone to replicate in music or in their vocal harmony structure.
I read somewhere that to date, ABBA is the best-selling group in history - not the Beatles, as is widely expected and accepted. I can believe that.
They were the consummate group. I’m so glad they came along in my lifetime! 😊
Thanks Dereck for continuing to share your enjoyment of ABBA with us! 👍🏻

With regard to Abba, I remember three phases of my life, the first when I was a child and listened to Abba because my father liked it and had records. The second phase, was in the 90s when I did not listen to Abba, I just wanted to know about the songs of that time and at most the 80s. The third phase was in 2005, when I started to rediscover Abba with more mature ears. Anyway, it was like falling in love again only in a much better way. Gimmie, Gimmie, Gimmie is an apotheosis of sounds.

Hello Dereck! Abba makes every of his songs so unique, just because they do not neglect and throw away an album and think this song will probably be a hit. Both Benny who writes the music and Björn who writes ingenious lyrics are very careful that they can stand for what they heard. In a TV program where Abba was recording a record and Björn was not happy with the result.Agnetha then says "But must it be so perfect?" Probably a little tired of putting voices several times.YES, it must Björn answers. And it has turned out that it is right. The songs are of such good quality, so you can listen to them for generations! Thank you Super ABBA for all the music ******

I'd have released those 1st 2 Tracks as Singles, instead of 'Does Your Mother Know' and 'Voulez-Vous'. Both were ABBA's lowest UK Selling Singles since 'Summer Night City'. In Germany, where ABBA were huge, neither Single did much. 'Does Your Mother Know' just managed a No.10 placing. 'Voulez-Vous' did even worse - No.14. It was ABBA's smallest German Hit, since 'So Long' got to No.11 there. I'm sure that 'As Good As New' and 'If It Wasn't For The Nights' would have been far bigger UK & German Hits. As well as bigger elsewhere, in the World. I think that ABBA chose the wrong Singles, sometimes...

Hi Dereck, thanks for ABBA !... it's all my youth !!..all mu adolescence... fabulous sound of this time !... yes...so magical ...
the music of Benny and Bjorn and the magics voices of Agneta and Frida...
"gimmie, gimmie, gimmie" it's the best song of 1978 !...
the technic of the choeur was to record the voices oh Agent and Frida and to make them pass in 2 or 3 times behind the voices sung again

Dereck, if you are Spanish speaking, ABBA also did this song in Spanish titled Dame, Dame, Dame (Amor esta Noche).

Apparently the 'echoey' sound common with a lot of Abba's vocals was achieved by building in a micro split second delay when the girls voices were layered during production. Not dissimilar to how a peal of bells works. Thus when layered several times the vocal takes on an almost chiming quality. This was why it was almost impossible to re create live. Amazing production and engineering on Abba's recorded music. .

I remember this album when it came out- one of the reasons I became a musician and composer! Pioneers waaaaay ahead of their time! And Agnetha and Frida- there are no words! 🎶😶 Honestly, their voices were precious precious instruments!

i’ve always loved the bass duet solo with the bass guitar (which both of abba’s usual session bassists play AMAZINGLY) and the bass synth. it’s just so cool and you don’t hear a bass duo in a solo super often

So happy I found this page. Love your insight on music. it made me appriciate ABBA again. have some suggestions for you:
"Lovers" , "i am the city" , "Me and I" and "the Visitors" 4 superb and almost ignored Abba (non singles)....which I really think should be enjoyed by a bigger audience in addition to your professional view. the last one(even though I have not followed Abba in their solo efforts, I recently came over one of Frida's singles(it was not a hit....had to google it) but clearly a great song....very different and with a quite weird video to match. its called "Twist in the dark" and is from the mid 80s. Thank You again. You are doing an Excellent Job.

OMG ... I'm glad you're not listening to only their biggest hits, but also other, little-known songs. You are the best 😁 And for me there is version of "Gimme Gimme Gimme" which meets the original version. This is Cher version of this song, but with thunders. It's sooooo awesome!!! I can also recommend you the song "Kisses of Fire". This is one of their most surprising songs. I hope you like it like me 😊🤩 And if you want to listen to something unusual, you should listen to "Disillusion" because it is the only song written only by Agnetha and "Suzy Hang Around" because it is the only song in which the leading voice there's Benny (he's a piano player). And one of the most underestimated of ABBA's songs - "If It Wasn't For The Nights". 😁🥰

Gimme!" is one of their biggest hits. I love this song so much. I have something about 100 ABBA's songs in my music gallery and so far I can remember 15 of their songs by heart 😁😅🥰

I have searched for a 12 inch single of this song for years, and to my surprise...there was never one (not even as a promo)...except for one pressed in Japan which supposedly was a promo only and I found it for sale on EBay, but for hundreds of dollars. I passed it. Lol.
