As a Muslim, I want to request everyone on this platform to try to tell others around you that we need to respect human life and reject any ideology that supports the killing of innocent civilians. In this era of fake news, we need to be more careful because it is becoming increasingly dangerous everyday... with rising polarisation around us, we need to reject hate and help people around us... 😢
Yes! Well said. I was raised Jewish (though I don't practice Judaism specifically anymore) and I have had many Muslim friends throughout my life!
I don't trust the news anymore. In fact I have a hard time trusting anything I read online right now. If we let Hamas undo all the progress the people of Israel and surrounding countries, then they win! Their efforts are to divide this world. Regardless of your faith, to stand in favor of unity is to stand on the side of humanity.
Who's going to tell Israel to stop murdering people?
I agree 100 percent that human life is to be respected. Otherwise why the commandment given through Moses, 'Do not murder'? Yet even the Law of Moses, of which you must have heard, and with which I am acquainted as a Christian, permits killing under certain circumstances--------as punishment for certain crimes, and in war.
It may sound scandalous to some ears, but during the conquest of Canaan,
The Lord commissioned the Israelites to put to death whole populations of reprobate unbelievers.
However as the revelation of God progresses, we find a different emphasis. Jonah the prophet is commissioned to preach to the people of Nineveh, capital of Assyria and an evil city. To Jonah's surprise, the people repent. In the New Testament, the disciples of Jesus are called to suffer persecution, not to persecute others, as they preach the Gospel tp the nations/
By His own suffering on the Cross (yes, it happened, as even secular historians know) Jesus set the supreme example.
Yet we must not expect people of the world, who live by their wits and their calculations and their faulty traditions, to behave with justice or mercy in most cases.
Jesus predicted that in the latter times (which may mean NOW), the love of many would grow cold.
The carefully planned crimes of Hamas exemplify this. Under the circumstances the harsh israeli response is not unexpected, and many think that this is exactly what Hamas wanted. Why? It gives them an ideal opportunity to inflame Arab-Palestinaisn and their allies around the world against Israel.
The sad fact about modern war is that for all the hype we hear about pr'surgical strikes' and guided weapons systems, no munitions are safe for civilians.
Nor are all civilians 'innocent'. Plenty of warmongering parties get into power by electoral means, using democratic institutions.
(1st john 1:8) 'If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.'

He's right about people becoming radicalised because of lack of peaceful economic opportunities, and how that's happening in the West, too. There's an old African proverb: ""The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth".
Wow thats a great proverb! Sounds like the Joker Hahaha
useful proverb
he's wrong, they're radicalised because they're denied fundamental rights and treated as less than human by the world
Thats is really nice proverb - can you tell me its origin?

Legal definition of GENOCIDE, by the United Nations, applicable to Israel.
And of the concept of INTENT (Responsibility by ACTION or OMISSION).
The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of 1948, as well as the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) of 1998 contain an identical definition for the Crime of Genocide:
GENOCIDE shall mean any of the following acts perpetrated with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group as such:
A) Killing of members of a group;
B) Serious injury to the physical or mental integrity of members of a group;
C) Intentional subjection of the group to conditions of existence that will result in its physical destruction, in whole or in part;
D) Measures intended to prevent births within the group;
E) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
INTENT (Liability for ACTION or OMISSION):
What is exactly and legally understood, in International Law, by INTENT?
The Rome Statute for the International Criminal Court (1998) reflects ".... A person has INTENT when... in relation to his conduct, that person INTENDS to cause that consequence or is AWARE that it will occur in the ordinary course of events".
Likewise, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in its landmark judgment, Akayesu (1998), established that "the offender is GUILTY of GENOCIDE because he knew or SHOULD have known that the act committed would destroy, in whole or in part, a GROUP.
(Adam Jones, Genocide, a Comprehensive Introduction, Routledge, New York, 2006, page 21, good explanation on the issue of INTENT within the concept of Genocide, for scholars and legal theorists).
Last i checked you don't give the option to leave under genocidal conditions, no? It's war, pretty decent to give notice of incoming actions. If as much effort was put into developping economic growth as to destroy Israel, prosperity would be accessible. Religious extremism is never a good economic plan, except for the religious elites.
Its a good interview in parts but the history needs to be looked into. The meddling of the UK and France in the area and taking land and just planting people there. What happened in isreal was horrible, was terrorism and was completely not the way to make effect. But the lack in the news highlighting the Isreali "operations" that are carried out on Palestinians on a near daily basis where they kill tens of people over and over. There is bad on both sides. Nationalism of this kind on both sides leads to destruction on both sides. And it saddens alot of people and this will polarise many families and friend groups. But the toll it will take on the people on both sides of this conflict will be deep and ever lasting and will breed more contempt in future generations.
lol at “the land being ‘provided’ to them”
I wonder who was on that land before? 🤔
This is a biased talk... I was suspicious from the jump. Ted has been coopted and the brand is being used.

"the land being provided for them" ... yeah, how did that come about exactly? What happened to all of the people who were originally living on that land?
EXACTLY!!!!!! Idiotic one sided point of view….. makes u sick….. this are the people who govern us that is why the world is in ruins!!!!
They were forced out of Israel by the Assyrians and Babylonians like 2500 years ago. Or, oh sorry do your reparations only go back to historical wrongs in specifically the past 76 years exactly and no further? How do you justify that cutoff exactly? Skin pigmentation? Or is it the specific people you have a problem with?
Exactly. What about the Balfour Agreement over which Israel has ridden rough shod?
Define "originally"
Arabs rejected any offers to share the land in the 1937 Peel Commission and 1947 UN Partition plan.
Excellent summary. We need a realistic and careful response, so that many more will not continue to suffer.
I didn´t see the "not" on first read and got a bit worried for second lol
Social media has done nothing but cause me stress, full of hate, extremely polarised and tonnes of misinformation that nobody questions. This is exactly what i needed to see a well balanced and insightful view. Thank you and keep up the good work.

Fully agree. You get people really emotionally charged. Obviously I can emphasize, but if people don't listen they don't learn.
To be fair: I don't think anyone in their right mind would watch videos of starving children and think that Israel is acting fairly.
I def think they overreact and that what is happening to Palestinians in Gaza is abhorrent.
But people also have to read facts from multiple viewpoints.
Nice to hear a level headed intelligent person discussing the topic.
This feels…. Biased
Of course Israel’s right wingers were aware all along , in fact, they had moved three battalions at the southern border out of the way to allow entry of the so-called “animal humans” as they want to make it appear. This is about Business and Netnyahoo has bloodied hands.
My heart goes out to the bereaved and entire nation of Israel. This is very bad news. Tbh though I am more concerned on how the US will respond to the ongoing conflict in Israel is deeply concerning, and I can't help but contemplate its potential ramifications on the U.S. economy.
Given the historical ties between the U.S. and Israel, it's plausible that taxpayers' funds will be deployed to address the situation. This raises questions about how it might affect our financial landscape.
Finished is an understatement. Billions of dollars are being sent to the Ukraine and I can barely afford to survive. The stock market has dipped and I don’t know if it is the best time to buy in or what till it has dipped further.
Do your research and always speak with an advisor before putting your money in these crazy markets. Look online or around you for experienced ones, I can’t let someone who hasn’t lived through at least one depression give me advice.
I've recently become aware of a financial advisor, Loren Lena Walker, who specializes in providing financial guidance during complex and turbulent times. Has anyone here engaged her services?
I know Loren. She has been interviewed by Blockworks Macro, Bloomberg, CNBC and has an aum of over 500m usd.
"the land being provided for them" . , how did that come about exactly? who has the right to give this land to them?, What happened to all of the people who were originally living on that land for thousands of years ?
I can't help but feel that this is being manipulated by forces outside of our knowledge or power.
Yes, no mention of the terrorists being taught from a child to kill Jews . The Muslim mosques by Bush/ Obama/Biden/ clintons. All the US secrets being sold to Egypt and other neighboring nations by our own government. Senator menendez indicted for it . Biden being exposed . Muslims that had a plot to infiltrate America and convert them. Some have gotten saved and exposed the plot on national radio. They chant death to Israel and death to America. Humas spent their money on terrorism instead of living quarters, sanitation, etc. and they are like animals to kill let alone behead babies. And chant in the streets death to Israel is a threat. Jews here feel unsafe. And Israel has the right to defend and eliminate threats. They bring it here to try to shift America. Palestinians need to go back and vote in a better leader. Finally he mentioned the religious part bc that’s what it’s really about. Jews and Muslims worship freely together and respect each other. Palestinians don’t want that . Egypt won’t let them in bc they don’t want humas fleeing into Egypt posing as a citizen. They should be ordered to stop the protests and antiseptics but they won’t . They are geared for hatred and terrorism. Jewish students are scared stiff. One was beaten by several Palestinians in New York. No body reported it in the news but Fox News. CNN reports it as poor Palestinians. It’s wrong. They chose their leadership like some in the US. But we have high courts to stop some of it and congress the only branch to declare war. It’s all about Palestinians trying to annihilate God and force Muhammad.
This? The interview?
What are you referring to?
What about thr Illegal settlements by Israel?? 2 state solution is wrecked now because of them dividing and cutting off land.
One throwaway sentence that they are focusing on that and that's why security was weaker than usual.

I'm disappointed heavily in Ted, how is this unbiased? The land was not provided to them it was stolen. Also how can you not mention how isr*ael retaliated and what's happening on Gaza?
The telephone company analogy to social media irresponsibility is PERFECT.
I thought the exact same thing.
No. It is not. Do you feel the same about gun companies, car companies, pesticide, insecticide and processed food companies? The later is a bit of a stretch in support my argument.

Yes, and nobody (in the U.S.) is listening.
Question - Should Hamas surrender now or wait until their chosen human shield of children is expended.
The ongoing issue and persistent source of tension stem from the irresponsible actions of the United Kingdom and Western powers, who allocated land that did not belong to them - land that was historically inhabited by Palestinians - for the creation of a Jewish state. To this day, Israel has not demonstrated a commitment to resolving this matter by returning a portion of the land to the Palestinians, as endorsed by the Palestinian government and the United Nations.
It's important to note that eradicating Hamas may not be a viable solution. The United States did not eliminate Al-Qaeda or ISIS completely, demonstrating that force alone isn't sufficient. The key lies in addressing the root causes and working towards a peaceful resolution to the problem.
The Palestinians never ruled the area. Infact, the land was pretty much a desert before 1948. The Oslo agreement tried to give the Palestinians their own territories but it always has problems with controlling violence. Israel distroyed the Jewish villages inside Gaza strip (Gush Katif) in order to give them a chance for their own territory, and got rockets in return.
@@Ashlaya_DM The notion that Palestinians never ruled the area may be subject to historical debate. Even in the Bible, there are references to the presence of Canaanites in the region. Since the last crusade, the land has predominantly been inhabited by Arabs.
It cutting off the water for a civilian population a war crime? Is it legal in international Law?
Have you watched the interview with the son of a Hamas leader or read his book titled "Son of Hamas" by Mosab Hassan Yousef, whose father was a Hamas leader? You can easily find the interview on UA-cam. This conflict isn't solely about Palestinians and Israelis; it primarily involves Hamas and Israel. Watch his interview and consider your stance on the matter.
It's shocking to discover that what the son of a Hamas leader said in a documentary about 5 years ago is now actually happening. The goal of Hamas is not to establish their own land or nationality but to promote their vision of Islam globally. He mentioned that Hamas intends to manipulate public opinion against Israel by using humanitarian aid and media propaganda.
The US is not stable right now we are vulnerable to our own people who want to follow a strongman who has actually said he wants to rewrite the constitution a man who is loose with secrets yet is afforded the ability to get close to those secrets again and we have to hope a few thousand votes in the electoral college will ensure we keep democracy or lose it. Our house is dysfunctional as there are too many attention seekers who have no idea how to govern and don’t care that they don’t know how. We have conservative groups who have openly published their plan for a coup project 2025 and Tuberville holding up military promotions to pair up with that and put loyalists in top military leadership yet they are still free to plan that coup, we are very vulnerable right now so we can’t look at Israel dropping the ball when we are fumbling around with our own ball with those paying attention to sit looking on in horror
He's absolutely right about social media needong to be held accountable. Meta needs to be slapped with a class action lawsuit for promoting hate.

Ian is clearly in denial how Isreal has not compiled with 2 previous UN resolutions. They keep taking Palestinian land. Isreal is the selfish oppressor.
This is very Israeili. 9/11 is to wake up in 1948 to find out that your country doesn't exist and a new country is there with new people and you have either to accept or leave. Imagine what, some people chose to fight and they are not terrorist. Israel wasn't built by waving flowers. Israeil was built on the bodies of the people who lived there. The solution that white europeans followed in the Americas and Ausrtalia will not work ( demolish everything and built a new country). Can you provide a neutral context? what I heard so far is just an Israeili narrative?
Very good, mature analysis.
Bremmer talks of everything but the causes of violence in Gaza. The Gazans have been bombed by Israel ten times since 2006. with thousands of Palestinians killed. They are extremely poor with 50% or more unemployment. They are essentially in a prison and kept there by Israel. How can Israel expect anything other than a terrorist group to take over under these circumstances? Unfortunately, Bremmer addresses surface issues, and does NOT confront the underlying causes.
wouldn't the jews in the camp attached the Nazis if they had gun? Palestinians are asking for them to be treated with dignity and they have a right to be free just like Ukrainians.
Imagine you were sitting in your house minding your own business when your door gets kicked in by some aggressive home invaders.
They murder some of your family members, chase some other members of your family into your neighbors' yard, and then herd you
and your surviving family into three small rooms(Gaza, the West Bank, and the Golan Heights) and take over the remainder of your house.
They then tell you to your face that this house is theirs because their ancestors lived on that plot of land 3000 years ago and their 'God'
gave it to them. They then start brining in some of their family to set up shop and live in YOUR house because they claim that they were 'persecuted'
in the last neighborhood that they lived in.Your neighbors and your family members that were chased into the neighbor's yard come on to your property
and try to evict the home invaders but but they claim that your neighbors are 'aggressing' them the state government(the United States) sides with the
invaders and starts providing the invaders with top notch weapons while are only able to use the few weapons that you can scrounge from the neighborhood.
Would YOU be willing to sit down at a 'negotiation table' with the invaders to determine how much they get to keep of what they stole from you in the first place?
This is the essence of it. You can't subjugate and commit atrocities against large numbers of people that go against international protocols and expect nothing to come back at you. This has always been a David and Goliath situation. It is well known the extreme right wing Israeli government wants to 'liquidate' the Palestinian people and have rejected any attempt by the UN and international courts to have their decades of actions against Palestinians examined in a fair and just way. They have continued to act with impunity as invaders and colonizers. There is no hope at all unless their backers and supporters are prepared to call them to account for the human rights abuses they have committed over so many years. Much of the world is very selective in its response to Israel. Quite rightly most people feel huge sympathy for the Jewish people for what happened during the Holocaust and thankfully millions have been welcomed openly in many countries throughout the world. Yes it is fair and reasonable for them to have a safe state of Israel but at no level should the international community have been continuing to turn a blind eye to the killing of almost 7000, mostly civilian, people since 2008, land theft and apartheid system they have put in place for the Palestinians, let alone the 152,560 people that have been injured by Israeli forces. It is my fervent hope that the international community will encourage everything from both sides to have a light shone on it and new expectations of appropriate, humane behavior put in place going forward from this tragedy.
If someone kicks you and your family out of your house and property because they say it belong to their ancestors 2000 years ago and refers you as sub human for refusing to give up trying to get your home and land back at the same time they put you and your family in a densely populated city where they control, food, electric water, medicine, everything going in or going out and from time to time drop bombs and extremely densely populated area, knowing got a lot of civilians, you’re probably gonna get killed . The reality is you treat someone as a sub human and an animal don’t be surprised when they retaliate and behave like a sub human animal. Amnesty international, and even Israel’s on human rights organization refer to the treatment of Palestinians and Israel now as an apartheid state that cannot be.
I like how you mentioned how the Jews feelings here, but how the Palestinians feels ? You guys talk from one side
And that makes us think there is something wrong
This man has been talking for both sides and he mentioned very clear that unfortunately the one who will suffer most this war are the Palestinians due of their own extremist and the varios terrorist organizations that exists inside there. Those extremist and militants are the ones who controls their people without infrastructure for the well being of their own
The analysis given by Ian Bremmer is through the lense of Israeli politicians. It is lacking several keys facts that he left out probably intentionally. Ian suggests that the two state solution is not viable anymore because the rest of the Arab states have lost interest in it. It's not really relevant whether the Arab states have lost interest in it or not because it is not about them getting a state of their own, is about the Palestinians. The real reason why the two state solution is no longer possible is because contrary to international law, Israel continues to build settlements in the West Bank. Such settlements are connected through complex systems of highways, rails ways, gas and power lines as well as tunnels. There simply isn't room left to create another state in the West Bank. UN resolution 242 passed in 1967 which calls upon Israel to withdraw back to in the 1967 borders. Israel never complied. Resolution 194 passed in 1948 gives the right of return to Palestinians refugees to their home lands. Incidentally many of those refugees live in Gaza today because their Original homes are in what is Israel today. The same goes for Palestinians refugees living in the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. The most disturbing thing that Ian said is that the suffering of the Palestinians is the natural consequence of terrorism. Where in fact the reason we are where we are today is because the injustice the Palestinians have suffered at the hands of Israel and its allies for over 7 decades. If you are someone reading this comment and looking for accurate information about the Israel-Palestine conflict, I suggest you look for other sources.
Facts. It's truly amazing to see the ignorance and accolades from the commenters who obviously are easily misled and when given a lopsided presentation think that it's balanced.
What I miss, and I miss it in most interviews, is the historical background and where this conflict arose.
Don't get me wrong, I abhor the actions of Hamas, but I do understand the feelings behind them.
In short, the entire conflict revolves around stolen land and the belittling, insulting, murdering and attempted expulsion of the original population, the Palestinians.
I rarely see this aspect and international politics hardly responds to it.
Israel basically created this setting itself.
What I often see in interviews is a link back to the Israeli Holocaust with the aim of justifying their actions and creating a certain sentiment. This upsets me very much because I see many of the aspects that the Jewish community underwent during the Second World War reflected in their own actions towards the Palestinians.
So trying to influence feelings with this, I find scandalous and hypocritical.
They have turned Gaza into a large open-air prison, a ghetto!
If people are treated this way, it should not be surprising that this creates feelings of hatred and will have long-term consequences.
One can say that Hamas is a terrorist organization, but I believe that the State of Israel has carried out terrorist actions just as well.
If people suspected that a Hamas leader was in a certain residential unit, Israel did not hesitate to raze half a neighborhood to the ground, regardless of whether innocent children and the elderly were killed.
It's a pity that no statistics are shown on how many children on the Palestinian side and how many children on the Israeli side have died.
That could change the picture drastically
Stop watching liberal news media and educate yourself.
No one talks about this. It's pathetic that even such discussions are one-sided!
You're not going far enough back in history. There were Israelites and philistines living on this land for thousands of years. Each (including christians) setting up religious holy places. Going read up on WW1 and ponder the possible different outcomes as what we have today. Israel/west bank could could have gone back to the ottoman empire if the west had not won the war and also helped established the arab state (you read that correctly). Palestinians (and israelis) could be speaking german these days or had to flee elsewhere. Go farther back and tell me if you have a similar opinion.
Your knowledge of history doesn’t go far enough. The conflict began between Isaac & Ismael.
Interesting, but how do you befriend a people, Palestinians, who just want to kill you and have it written in their Constitution that Israel must be wiped away, cease to exist? The Palestinians have gotten 100's of millions, probably billions, donated to them but they've spent it on weapons, concrete tunnels, that's a fact. The problem is they are controlled by Hamas who keep all the money and instead of spending it on infrastructure, schools, jobs, they spend it on weapons. Every punch of concrete they could get their hands on has been used to create these large tunnel systems to bring over more rockets and weapons from Egypt. How can you have coloring books for little kids and neighborhood plays and have them put on bomb vest and then have other little kids acting like Jews come out and they blow them all up! Kids, 5 and 6 years old are being brainwashed into suicide bombers. Coloring books depicting the same thing. Israel let Hamas control Gaza because of international pressure and THEY are using the poor Palestinians as cannon fodder. It's sad, because the weakest are having all the money from the world taken away from them by a hateful terrorist organization Hamas.
I agree free Palestine.
But FREE PALESTINE FROM HAMAS AND HEZBOLLAH!!
The present bombing campaign of Gaza looks like an initial clearing of a site before a building project.

Really it was the Romans, Byzantine and Ottomans not sorting homelands out before the rise of nation-states. Emperors and Sultans asleep at the wheel,
This is complete BS. First this is not an Israeli-Hamas conflict, it is an Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Second he completely ignores the past and ongoing seizure of Palestinian land by Israel and continued provocation that resulted in this latest episode. He then goes on to talk about Isreal making friends with everyone because everyone has "moved on" - well guess what? From the reactions of the Saudis and others they clearly haven't. When you start off these types of discussions on such premises you've chosen a side, all but very subtly so. Those of us who point out these things will be labeled "anti semitic" or "anti Isreal" which could not be further from the truth. Then, very conveniently you go on to appeal to everyone's sentiments by drawing 9/11 into the conversation as if everyone around the world should now interpret these events in parallel to or as another 9/11. etc etc. The point is that you cannot hope to come to anywhere near any kind of fair or equitable resolution to these issues when you frame your discussions in this way. The Palestinians have been aggrieved - it is their land that has been seized and they are the ones living in the open air prison and this posture fails completely to take that into account. Ignoring one side's grievances while paying heed to the other's is very dissapointing to say the least. A balanced or neutral arbiter you are not!
They said this is their 9/11 (heard that before many times?). For the helpless Palestinians every day has been a 9/11 since 1948.
This guy makes some excellent points. Not least in regards to social media and the companies that run it.
Particularly about the lack of dialogue and the seeking of solutions. Regulation is required.

Yes, I feel like I’ve been shown the whole map and not just the one section someone wants me to focus on. Bremmer knows everyone involved is a human with hopes, needs and fears and goes from there to show the whole story. Interestingly, even seeing all this doesn’t mean he can see the future.

That they stole yes. Dirty giews🤮
Yup noticed that too
This does not take any consideration of the absolute horror of daily life for all Palestine for the past 50 years. The death of anyone is terrible but you have to know nothing to be surprised by this attack. The loss of life by the Israelis is much less than the loss of life by Palestine over the past few months, this is a direct response to ongoing murder of citizens by Israel. My family is Jewish and I have a lot of friends in Israel and while we condemn of course this attack absolutely no one is surprised. The outcome will most likely be the ethnic cleansing of all Palestinians …this is far too complicated for this show or to comment on. My guess is within 10 years there will be nothing left of Palestine.
Kudos to this brave Jew.
Amazing talk Helen and Ian. Thank you for this 🙏
One of the best analysis I have heard in a while! Good questions and Ian did a great job at explaining the current situation so well.
It just doesn't add up that the israel secret service & Israeli army weren't prepared for this, & I don't understand why the army wasn't mobilised instantly .
Pls don't say Iranian, Iranian are so much different from Iran's regime. All the world knows Iranian people are fighting with the regime & many people are killed by the Regime.
How do you reconcile two groups where one wants the complete destruction of the other as a fundamental principle that is non negotiable?
I wish you would tell the whole truth! If the Israelis have relations with governments, then this is for the governments, but the Arab and Islamic peoples have a different opinion. This is because of what Israel is doing against the Palestinians
The Palestinians cannot regain there honor acting dishonorably. The Palestinian cannot obtain justice by by raping and killing those who oppose them. The Palestinians cannot achieve the good by committing evil. This is a dark day for humanity. And, the Palestinians are celebrating. This is a brilliant analysis. Unfortunately I see no solution for many generations. The Israelis need a homeland and the Palestiansneed a homeland. Hamas terrorist attacks and Israeli destruction of Gaza are contradictory to the establishment of trust, negotiation and reconciliation.
It’s true, but like any human being, if your basic needs are not being met, eventually you do something about it and the worse the situation, the more radical the response. It’s almost like hamas was like, “oh, everyone is ignoring us? We’ll make you pay attention even if it means destroying ourselves.”
And the world is certainty paying attention now. It’s such a devastating situation and so heartbreaking for the people just trying to live their lives there.
Remember some of those people voted by majority to have hamas in power.
@@adamtapparo2168 Well written. Thank you for your comment.
The Israelis live everywhere, they were displaced JuST as the Palestinians are everywhere as refugees. Ironic isn’t it? Israelis have existed for thousands of years before this, and do with Christian’s today in the West Bank. Let’s not act like this is something that is acceptable or true.
The idea that these two groups will learn to peacefully coexist seems like it has been shattered. Two groups within the same borders both claiming to be the rightful owners of the territory will lead to instability if one or both don’t change their attitude. The unrest for the last 70 years has been the result of hope that would happen.
I think it’s time to accept that only continued suffering can result from the experiment continuing. Time to accept that the results will be “unfair” for one of the parties and, like is always the case in statecraft, the weaker party will be the loser here. These would-be-Palestinians need to be relocated out of Gaza and out of the West Bank so that there can be unambiguous borders between nation states to fight over. Yes, it will be an ugly and messy business to make this happen but it at least will provide an opportunity to end the conflict and suffering and is the only realistic way to do so.
When I hear a man like that talk with such clear insight and empathic intention, my heart hurts for what we Germans (my country of birth) have done to the Jews. Such a diverse, educated, curious culture and people, that meshed so well for so long with the German culture and was a major contribution to its intellectual achievements. When I came to America as an immigrant, I met more Jewish people than ever before, and always felt immediately at home. This enrichment of our German society was destroyed and taken from us by a pathological madman.
That madman was half-Jewish. And he made Germans gullible enough to believe in his mad doctrine of Aryan supremacy while inflicting genocide on 6 million Jews.
Face it: you are just as much a victim of his human depopulation agenda as those 6 million.
And what did those Jewish SURVIVORS do when they created Israel? Inflict the same damage to the Palestinians on what one could consider as ETHNIC CLEANSING.
From victim to perpetrator. The Jews wailed about the Holocaust. But have they LEARNED anything?
Think about it.
Well said! And touching to read your lucid sentiments. It truly is a shame that Germany was dragged in that direction by extremist forces. Like you said, the Jews are a diverse group. Many of them truly loved Germany and Austria and wanted nothing more than to integrate and be a part of it. I know for example that the writer Stefan Zweig was heartbroken to leave the Austria that he loved so much. Anyway, we find ourselves almost a century later being pulled in different directions by polarized and extremist elements in our society and the world. Only level headed rational people such as Mr Brenner can help us to find the necessary compromises and solutions for a peaceful and sustainable future.

Is there a collective fear of the right wingers in Israel? And if that were the case, why? Could you explore please .Jane Soole, Dorset, England.
The UN has condemed them over and over again. The UNSC mostly has not, and that is because it's ran by the Permanent Five and it's because of how much support Israel gets from the U.S., France, and Great Britain.
Good question but also irrelevant. The West Bank isn't attacking Israel, Hamas and Gaza is. The West Bank isn't attacking because it has a rational government that knows economic growth is a solution, not madness and murder.
@@Jagonath Gaza is one of the most dense places in the world. Of course the people of Gaza need more land then the small tiny space that its given. Lets not forget that most of the resources in Palestine are in lands Israel has and keeps taking. What kind of resources do you have stuck in a small space? They need to be independent !
@@Jagonath West Bank agreed to recognize Israel in the Oslo under the promise that they will get land back and Israel will recognize them too. Hamas’s position was “they are lying they won’t do it” and this is the only reason they still strong because West Bank didn’t have any improvement. The Israel government didn’t do it and took even more land by allowing the illegal settlements. For example when the attack happened the military was moved from Gaza’s border to the west bank (leaving the boarder without strong protection) to protect the right settlements as they were supposedly going to go the Alqsa mosque (something Palestinian won’t like and will angry about) before that they had other issues with Christian Palestinians too. The settlements and expanding on Palestinian territories making issues, instability, and feeling of dishonesty. Solving these issues and showing international and Israeli-west bank commitment will reduce radicalization on both side (will make no place or support for Hamas). The other solution is making a constitution and one state solution under equal laws that allows. Israel making peace and talks with arab countries they never had issues with (UAE, Bahrain…) the peace should be made with Palestinians and then there will be no reason for any country to have issues with Israel 🤷🏻

Thank you for an excellent show and analysis of Ian Bremmer.
In Israel, we say about such analysis: "When Small men begin to cast big shadows, it means that the sun is about to set." (there are few different Jewish versions about this).
The whole analysis is very biased and incorrect. We are not Americans, and our point of view is not colonial as urs. We understand, that different people may vary in their point of view, and that is also true for our neighbours who hate Jews. The democratic, or republican rhetorics (he is cleary democratic) is not part of our culture. Although our (Israely Jewish) values and goals aligned with urs in the middle east doesn't mean we think the way u do. Palestinians doesn't need/want a state of their own.
It was incomplete narrative. Needs to be told the truth.
So, blame the oppress people. That’s interesting view. So your telling me that the Jewish people who are occupying the Palestinian land should be ok with what’s going on. I have not heard you say what’s happening to the Palestine people. Ok keep your bias.
The mistakes made my Western powers since 9/11 are big news for the world at large but they add little to the simmering dissatisfaction of people in Gaza whose life were not massively impacted. I love the fact that Israel is a proud and thriving country but if we ignore the fundamental problems with the foundation of a state over an existing state, albeit in the aftermath of war, then we are failing to see so much of why the Palestinian people are so disenfranchised and oppressed. Nothing has stopped or even slowed the building of new settlements and although there will be extreme muslim clerics calling for a holy war on the Jews this dispute is about political geography and economy not about faith.
It angers me that all my life, the media are talking about religious leaders and Muslims and Christians and Jews. It's about people and homes and food and water and land and education and health. Lets just stop all this BS
I don't think you listened very carefully.
Well said 👍🏽👍🏽
Israel has the position of power, and I think it has to be the strong to be also wise. If they just flatten Gaza now and then leave the Palestinians alone with their fate again, the next generation of Hamas is pretty much guaranteed. But they also need to communicate this clearly. The government must make clear to everybody that they will deal with Hamas, but also show willingness to solve the Issue with Palestinians and help them to get a future. Gaza has been a breeding ground for extremism all the way back since this started and it baffles me that Israelis have kind of accepted it and not tried more actively to seek a solution. I hope for all people in the Region with was the last wake up call in this matter.

Ian is so worthy.
I am a caucasian American and reading comments that this is a balanced analysis. I respectfully disagree. There is no discussion about root cause and for good reason. Israel has continually encroached on and occupied Palestinian's West Bank territory for decades. Gaza is an open air prison that Israel controls with an iron fist. Since 2008 the death count is 6,400 Palestinians to 300 Israeli’s (who have all the power thanks to the West). Who cried for the 6,400 Palestinians who justifiably fought for their humanity against a brutally violent Israeli regime? I guess if the Palestinian's where white and Scottish and were portrayed by Mel Gibson American's might see what is happening. Israel has had Palestinians under their boot for decades. The abused have become the abusers. The majority of Palestinians do not support Hamas, but could you blame them if they do??? If you took over my home, lived in one of my bedrooms and then over time took another bedroom and then another bedroom, restricted me from my home unless I got your permission and beat me down when I complained, I would be beyond furious. I would not have been as patient as the Palestinians have been. This is Israel and Hamas’ fault, along with the West for supporting Israel’s violent atrocities. That Israel has the West's support is pure madness.
Well said

What Golda said was more like 'We can forgive you for killing our children, but not for making our children kill your children.'
“We can forgive the Arabs for killing our children. We cannot forgive them for forcing us to kill their children. We will only have peace with the Arabs when they love their children more than they hate us”

Very interesting analysis of the geopolitics of this conflict particularly the parallel between 9/11 and bad decisions taken in it's aftermath BUT in my opinion not enough emphasis was placed on Israel's crimes against civilian populations which is probably a central contributory variable to the recent irruption of violence. The Irish created the IRA out of a sense of desperation which leads to terrorist attacks. If Israel had ceased the illegal colonization of Palestinian land, the mistreatment and martyrdom of the people in Gaza and the greater support of the racist, apartheid regime of Zionism then it is probable that Hamas would not have been elected and if Israel had not lead the Palestinians to feel that they were not included in the vision of the Abraham accord then this the murderous attacks of Hamas might also have been avoided. Killing civilians is morally wrong no matter what has happened. A democracy is supposed to respect international law.
He failed to mention that Egypt warned them three days before the attack and Netanyahu probably let it happen to unify the country behind him. This war puts all his political and criminal problems on the back burner .
CIA warned them as well 2 weeks earlier, it was on the CNN. They knew, they wanted to let it happen to achieve other political objectives, such as officially annexing Gaza and ethnically cleansing more Palestinians through genocide and evacuation under the pretense of "for their safety." These people if they leave, will not be allowed to return, just like they did in 1948 when they did not allow Palestinians to return. Dirty politics, greed, genocide, and atrocity propaganda is what we are witnessing against the Palestinian people.
Thank you. He also failed to mention the beginning history that led to Palestinians forced to leave their homeland or live in the little bit of occupied land left for them that have become a virtual open-air prison. In 1948-49 the first 750,000 Palestinians were forced off their land with the founding of Israel. Yes, the Jews deserve a state. And I do not condone what Hamas leadership have done. However, if you look at maps of the geographical growth over the decades and to the present, you'll see the insidious dispossession and harm done to Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza, Jerusalem and the few scattered villages left with Palestinians.
This is a plead for humanities! You don't have to support Hama's policies to stand up for the Palestinian rights, just as you don't have to support the Iserali govt policies to stand up the Jewish rights✊✊✊
More so because palestinian jews exist. You know, the asian jews that zionist tried so hard to erase.
Seems that the government policies dominated those people from historical times to modern times according to thier history and mostly religious motivated wars throughout centuries probably and have turned humanity at the moment to a barbaric primitive mode
Clear, concise, yet eloquent analysis. Thank you, Mr. Bremmer.
I can’t believe everyone praising this guy when his observations are very one sided
Is this gaslighting??? Does anyone know what Israel has been doing to Palestinians for decades? I know we are all smarter than this. Why is everyone so scared to admit that Israel is wrong and that Palestinians deserve to defend themselves. I am NOT for terrorism. I am NOT for attacking innocent civilians. But is anyone going to admit that Palestinians are reacting to years of harassment and abuse and violence against them? Please tell me people are not this dumb
Isn't Israelites rights to defend and wipe out Hamas terrorists?
The Israel's PR machine geared into action and called this their 9/11 (heard before?). For Palestinians everyday was a 9/11.
The ability of Hamas to penetrate Israel, despite the nation's rigorous security measures, is a perplexing question. Israel is renowned for its stringent security protocols, which makes such breaches all the more troubling to comprehend…
There is evidence that they knew about it (Google it). So basically they decided to sacrifice their people to be able to massacre the Palestinians in Gaza with total international support.
Israel was warned by Egypt and the CIA of the attack, so they knew. You can figure why, which is obviously a carte blanche to commit genocide and then officially annex Gaza afterwards, which is what they wanted all along. Hamas delivered to them on a silver platter what they exactly wanted and allowed to happen. Israel is a security maniac, so with warnings of attack from 2 countries, they would have been even on higher alert than their usual high evel of security. So no need to be preplexed, this is not rocket science.
Yes, very curious and troubling.
You’d have thought if any state could empathise with a stateless people like the Palestinians it would be Israel. If Bremer is right and there’s a clear distinction between Palestine and Hamas, then it would be wise for Israel to cease occupation of what was Palestinian land and even agree to hand it back in a bid to broaden this distinction and position Hamas differently. I say this with utter respect for all, especially all those affected by these attacks.
Well said, good on you. May more people think like you.
Yes how ironic that Zionist Israel are treating the Palestinian people exactly like the Nazis treated the Jews !Mind blowing 😲
Exactly 👏🏾🇵🇸
he mentioned that something similar to this might have been possible in the past.
but today it is not possible, for couple of reasons:
- Israel doesnt want to gumble that a terror org like Hamas would get into power in an even bigger territory with more recources.
- numbers. the land would have troubles fitting everyone - because it would also need to hold all the Palestinian refuges. the Palestinians and the Israelis have multiplied in the time that have passed since 1946.
there are around 14M~ Palestinians around the world (including Israel), and the current Israeli population is around 9M~ (there is some overlap between the numbers).
the size of the land is around 27,000~ square KM - so it would be around 740 people per 1 square KM (if 20M people would live there), and this is while counting the desert, which is 13,000 squere KM out of those 27,000.
(those are very rough numbers I calculated after couple of minutes of google search)
This was the first well informed ,accurate explanation of the situation. Most importantly not just propaganda for either one side or the other.Wish there were more voices like this gentleman.
No it’s not, it was extremely biased and completely ignored the huge factors when it came to the treatment of Palestinian citizens. Hamas was not a democratically voted in party, they won a literal battle with Fatah around 2006/2007 .
This commentator completely missed out the dehumanisation of Palestinian people for decades and systemic slaughter / imprisonment of Palestinian children .
Israel has continuously built illegal villages on Palestinian land, literally going against UN laws and bulldozing homes and building their own communities….

Everyone is walking around the elephant in the room : The concentration camp called Gaza
For geographical clarity, Palestine is currently divided into two parts with separate governing bodies ~ the Gaza region of Palestine is located on the south western side of Israel along the Mediterranean Sea; its southern border is with Egypt. It is governed by Hamas (who has not held or allowed another election since its first in 2006); Ironically, the unfortunately named West Bank region of Palestine is NOT located in Western Israel but rather in the very *easternmost* and *central* region of Israel (not northern or southern) on the *west side or bank* of the Jordan River; the Jordan River itself divides Israel proper (and including this area of Palestine) from the country, Jordan. The "West Bank" region of Palestine contains land from the river to Jerusalem which is in central Israel. The two parts of Palestine currently have two different governments, Hamas in Gaza, and the PLO in the West Bank, and are NOT physically land connected in any areas; therefore a created *State* of Palestine, unless a bridge of land is secured for it, will still be two islands of land within Israel. However, this is NOT what is meant by the "two state solution". The two state solution refers to: a State of Israel and a State of Palestine as disconnected as its two regions and its own governments currently are.
We should be precise that it's a nation-state. A "state" does not imply territorial continuity e.g. medieval Europe was a clusterfuck of states that could involve, say, an Austrian prince ruling in Italy or a French king ruling in Britain. The nation-state of the 19th century adopted territorial rationalization to fix the feudal geography of Europe. Nation-states are middle-class creatures, they came into being and exist as the political unity of a national bourgeoisie. The Middle East to this day has nation-states patterned after the European model, but they also continue to have religious and non-territorial states (something ISIS aspired to). Nation-states are patterned on political forms that make sense for a middle class society such as competitive elections and free speech. But really, nation-states were relegated to history by the neoliberal revolution, which was a return to a non-territorial market society. Nation-states continue to exist formally as the basis of the international system, but across the world, including Israel, we see national middle and working classes rebelling against the abolition of the nation-state. What rules the world now is transnational superpower e.g. G7, BRICS, EU. So, when we talk about a two-state solution in Israel, what are we really talking about? Do Palestinians want to be middle class models of liberal democracy? Even Israel has ditched the pretense and has become an ethnic nationalist state, no longer a territorial nation-state that unifies everyone as citizens. What is citizenship worth in a world ruled by Superpower blocs and transnational corporations?

Does not the land belong to the Palestinians? The land was stolen from them.
Amidst this unending oppression, it is imperative to reflect on the fact that Palestinians played no role in the horrors of the Holocaust, and they have a history of extending a welcoming hand to Jewish refugees in their pursuit of safety. This act of refuge was in response to the persecution and atrocities suffered by Jewish communities in Europe during the Holocaust, where millions of innocent lives were tragically lost.
However, in the wake of World War II and the global acknowledgment of the need for a Jewish homeland, Israel was established in 1948, leading to a deeply complex and ongoing conflict with the Palestinian population living in the region. The current situation is marked by the heart-wrenching reality that innocent Palestinian children, many aged between 1 and 15, who are undeniably civilians, live in perpetual fear due to the violence inflicted upon them. Countless Palestinian families continue to endure daily distress and insecurity at the hands of Israeli soldiers. Further intensifying the gravity of the situation is the issue of Palestinian children being detained without apparent justification.
In a manner akin to a guest who initially sought refuge in your house during a time of need, only to later turn the tables and begin terrorizing your family, ultimately deciding that your house is now theirs and ruthlessly forcing you and your loved ones out of your own home, the historical and ongoing complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have left countless innocent lives in turmoil. In the face of injustice, will you choose silence and stillness, or will you summon the strength to resist and fiercely fight for your loved ones?
But was not Jerusalem owned by the Jews millennia ago?
Did they really offer refugee to jews? I heard five Arab states attacked them when they arrived.
You are wrong on some points. There was never an Arab paliestine that "welcomed Jews" into their land. In fact, there were several Arab massacres of Jews before Israel was reestablished (Hebron in 1929 and the Farhud in 1942 for starters ). Jews are literally indigenous to that land and history proves it. Jews were living there uninterrupted since the beginning. Yes, there were Arabs, but they had the opportunity to create their own state when the British partitioned the land after the Ottomans, but the Arabs refused and ganged up against the Jews and the rest is history. They could have had a state of their own many times and accept peace with Israel and prosper but they kept choosing war instead. So be it.
Arabs hardly welcomed Jews.
They cut babies out of pregnant women in Safed and Hebron.
This is just most obvious factual error in your insanely flawed pot.
Either way, your propaganda war was just lost.

Ian Bremer is the type of person I needed to hear this news from. Thank you for maintaining a neutral eye and helping people like me to understand the situation and trust the information given
He noted the social media conflicts but didn't mention the estimated number of bots. Fake confrontational issues arising from a
F arcical
O pinonated
X enophobic noise channel pretending to be news, fits right in with his notion that no one knows what is true. The podcasts like this and Ian are the truth.
I don't think Ian Bremmer's analysis is anywhere close to being accurate. The idea that the two state solution is no longer viable has nothing to do with the normalization between some Arab states and Israel. Ian seems to suggest that there can only be a Palestinian state if the Arab states care for it or demand it and that is total non sense. The real reason the two state solution is no longer viable is because contrary to international law Israel continues to build and expand settlements that are connected by complex roads, railways, gas/electrical lines, tunnels and more. In order words there's no more land left on the west bank for the Palestinians to create a state. UN resolution 242 passed over 50 years ago requires Israel to withdraw back to the 1967 borders so that Palestine can exist within those borders. Israel hasn't complied. UN resolution 194 passed in 1948 grants the right of return to Palestinians refugees. Many of those refugees today live in Gaza, the west bank, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria. Their homes are in what is Israel today. Israel hasn't complied. The most disturbing thing that Ian mentions however, is that the suffering of the Palestinians is the natural consequence of their actions. This is non sense. The on going occupation of the west bank, the on going expansion of settlements, the ongoing attacks of settlers (backed by the IDF) on Palestinians villagers and farmers, the constant raids of Israel into the west bank, the imprisonment of nearly 6 Palestinians (many without charge) is what is driving Palestinians to madness. There's a lot to say here but for those who are here because they want to get an understanding of the conflict, this interview with Ian Bremmer is unfortunately, not a good source.
@@adamhannah-c1j what is a good source in your opinion?
@@adamhannah-c1j Your reply is obviously highly biased against Israel. You seem to be doing EXACTLY as what you claim Mr. Brenner did! Mr. Brenner's analysis was balanced and fair IMO.
@@adamhannah-c1j The attack on Israel didn't come from the West Bank, so what all your deceptive wingeing about the situation there has to do with anything isn't remotely clear. If the "two state solution" isn't viable, that only leaves a 1-state solution, and that state is going to be Israel, so be more careful what you wish for.
TED lost credibility by bringing a proZionist supporter to explain the situation. He didn't talk about the 75 years occupation, ethnic cleansing and apartheid of Palestine. He didn't talk about the concentration camp that is gaza, he didn't talk about the zionist state that wants to annihilate all non Jews. He didn't talk about how Israeli settlers are armed to the teeth and with the Israeli occupation forces is stealing home theft of Palestinians at gun point and sometimes killing Palestinians. He didn't mention that this country was Palestine and Palestinian for thousands of years. He didn't mention that Israel is committing multiple war crimes with impunity. He didn't mention that they are using white phosphorus on civilians. He didn't mention that more than half of Gaza is children. He didn't mention that Israeli settlers hold rallies chanting death to arabs. He didn't mention that settlers are burning children alive then celebrate. He didn't mention that settlers amputate the limbs of Palestinians and run them over with their cars while laughing. TED you need to do better. Bring someone for both sides, not just one side.
I got familiar with Bremmer via Charlie Rose. A tragic loss of our ability to learn so much about so many different critically important topics from so many like Bremmer when he went off air. Can’t find an even remotely equivalent source of info of this level now. Need it as much as ever.

Did I miss it, but did he mention the changing maps of Israel with Palestinian share quickly reducing and the settlers taking over Palestinian lands. Oh and the peace deals offered 4 times by Palestinians based on very favourable terms for Israel?
Palestinian was never offered a genuine peace deal - it was all PR stunts. Just like Churchill had offered a "moth-eaten" India to Indians - never a good faith effort at peace.
Exactly. I’m listening and I don’t hear anything about that sorted history.
This video is about the current war, not about the history of Israel and Palestine.
(but he did mention the illegal settlements in the west bank, once or twice)
may I ask what peace deals are you referring to?
Yes what about the Palestinian people who have lost their lands due to the Zionist settlement?

One thing that Ian has not suggested is for Israel to end the occupation
people like you will never change@@johannesramokgadi6243
Thanks for summarizing.
@@johannesramokgadi6243 it's a bit of a problem. Netanyahu has been avoiding that issue and kicking it down the street for years, indeed you could say all our governments had done that for 5 decades, and about 60-70% of Israel have by now come to accept and even think keeping the occupation is a good thing which is tragedy #1.
On the other hand, even if the minority of 30% of the voters want a two states solution, we are in no way strong enough to make that change in parliament. that is tragedy #2.
And finally, even if there was the political will and a way to pull out at least a few of the settlements, the third tragedy is there is nobody to give the land to. Hamas can't really rule, they are no better than ISIS, they slaughtered more Palestinians than Israel did over the last 17 years, and the PA is not strong enough to stand up to them and all the other zealot groups (Sadly, this was made worse under Netanyahu who thought it was wise to keep them weakened). So at the moment there is no stable, trusted ruler, democratic or otherwise, that has the legitimacy and trust of the Palestinians themselves. a situation that could become a replay of Afghanistan, with the Taliban taking over as soon as the US left, so will Hamas and the other groups topple the PA in a bloody coup. Israel had a chance to turn over control to the PA when it was strong and respected and agreed on by most Palestinians, but that is no longer the option. I wish there was some other solution, but none is viable at the moment.
So what now? ideally Israel would at least cut back on the number of settlers and give the PA a bit more power to establish themselves in terms of borders and sovereignty, but that goes against the extremist, racist ideology of Bibi and his coalition.
thnx
Thank you Ian. With so much news going on today, it’s hard to understand what’s really going on
“Ultimately, the Israeli population is most threatened by what the terrorists of Hamas unleashed from Israel.” Very deep 👍🏻
What about the Palestinian residents who killed their children, kidnapped them, and bombed them with missiles? The Palestinians are only defending their homeland. Why did you not speak up or notice the pain of the Palestinians whose land was taken and whose children were killed and who were unable to live peace? You are deceived by social media and do not know the truth of the matter, unfortunately.

Cooler heads must prevail to stop the cycle of hurt people hurting people. We should fight for peace but the idea of peace is differs between different groups so compromise is the best way there thru empathy and open communication. History teaches us how miniscule events can lead to all out chaos but also teaches us that peace between long time enemies is also possible. Do not fall for the hopeless idea that peace is not possible.
Finally an intelligent comprehensive understanding of the current war in Israel 🙏🏾

Very confusing.
Hamas is a terrorist group...
A government controlling and
oppressing people are not terrorists.
Zionists have been killing Palestinians, Ukrainians and treating them worse than animals, this sort of resistance was inevitable. The Palestinians are subjected to daily violence, humiliation, deprivation of basics, their children are killed, their movements restricted, all this on their own land. I am surprised that it took them this long to hit back. Sheer demographics and global power shift will ensure a Palestinian victory.

We need so many more people like this man, and even this interviewer. Fantastic insight. Neutral, level-headed, and nuanced. Thank you for this.
He just casually says “the land being provided to them” as though it’s something laudable that the British handed over another people’s land to European settlers who colonized and expelled the people from their land.
The remark that Palestinians might have "got " more land at some stage misses the point. Israel was allowed large areas of land and statehood by the UN, but that was not enough for Israelis as they proceeded to steal more and more land over the past 40 years
Not sure what’s more disturbing, this blatant lie or 14 morons liking it.
Israel wasn’t given anything by UN, the initial devision of historical area called Palestine went majorly to trans Jordan, arab state on the west bank and smallest piece of land along the shore to Israel.
Israel has been attacked by surrounding arab states multiple times and as a result of winning each one of these wars expanded and annexed territories.
