Excuse me if I don't see it that way... Specially when compared to present standards Never On Sunday is a tribute to innocence and freedom. And as for those "stereotypes Greeks" I love each and every character on that film. I have treasured this movie since I was eleven years old. There have been times when I have gone back to watch it just to unwind and bring back the days of simplicity.
I heard this song all my life- I never imagined it was about a prostitution! Now it seems so sad all the men lusting after one woman who availed herself to many! Love the song hate the movie! Sorry prostitution is not beautiful or fun.
LOL! Yeah, it's crazy that Dassin got away with this in the early sixties and still managed to make it frothy and funny and so earthy! Thank you for commenting!
"As for what she does, we can't tell you what it is. But we can't keep you from guessing!" One thing I don't like about old marketing is how they pretend to be coy, even when they basically tell you everything and you don't have to guess.
I wasn't in the military and I assume that thirsty sailors arriving at ports won't change but the way they are perceived by the locals might if the films change.
Whether she is a whore or not, the Samaritan woman in John 4 isn’t a victim. She is Melina Mercouri as Ilya, a self-employed, free-spirited, Planned Parenthood woman, and she wants to get pregnant. When the camera begins to roll, Jesus says “Give me a drink” and Iiya says “Can you dance to the Bouzouki?” And He makes her pregnant the same way the Holy Ghost made His mother pregnant by immaculate conception with the Spirity of the Lord. Everything in the Gospels allude to something else in scripture. The pericope in John 4 is an allusion to Tamar in Genesis 38, with Jacob’s Well the anchor of the allusion. This pericope is also an allusion to the moment of immaculate conception of Jesus in (John 4:26; Luke 1:27 - 38) and a song of celebration(John 4:29; Luke1:46 - 55). If Martin Luther was alive, he would be burning Pro-Life/Creationists at the stake for heresy. The triangulation of the the neo-Calvinist TULIP theology and Solo Scriptura with the Evangelican business model is a gnostic construct that denies the Holy Spirit, which is why Evangelicals can find no fault in Trump: money talks when Mammon squawks
I think the movie would have been funnier if it was originally titled: "Never on a Saturday?" with a slightly different plot. Not funny anymore? Making it "frothy and funny and earthy" was the cover. That is how he "Dassin" got away with it. The subtle propaganda was about bashing Christians especially Catholics. I'll bet this film was banned by the Catholic church at the time.

I'm 55, this song was played at our 6th grade summer concert. I still remember it and only found out just now that it was from a movie

the ironic part...
the day she passed away, Melina Mercouri, was on a Sunday!
Dan Gniadek seems almost like a tribute to her, doesn’t it.
lol i would say noteworthy but not ironic :)

so sorry, but unfortunately the talented Melina Mercouri never won an Oscar!
She won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for Never on Sunday.....

But that title would bash Jews and Christian Sabbatarians.
