Only place on the internet I've found this info, and have been looking far and wide! I actually already bought the Alpine adapter (at an extortionate price for what it is!), and it doesn't give a way to power the camera - only has just the RCA socket. Been trying to figure out how to power the camera only when needed .. now I have the answer :) Thank you.
Thanks for the video, just a note for people, the output power from the unit is 6v, most cameras (my pioneer for example) are 12v, so I got nothing showing. I took the 2 power leads and connected them to the red and black power out from the fx 905 head unit, which also means I can use the camera so long as the head unit has power.
I had the same problem with my iLX702D, ran the pair of wires to head unit to discover it can't power it :D So I connected Camera 12V to the reverse wire going to head unit and now all works fine. One note, some Alpine units need extra ground/shield from RCA cable: ua-cam.com/video/xNy3byarKbk/v-deo.html, I applied this fix before 12V wire so not sure if mine needed it, but doesn't hurt now :D
@@TheFittingBay yes the built in cable is meant to be used for a rear camera. It is just a yellow, a white and a read rca plug on both ends. I am just not sure if Alpine's cable is a straight 1:1 wire through as I don't know the pinout... Will try it by myself
Dominik Feser okay I’m with ya. So if you have both ends of the caravan cable (front and rear). You can use that wiring. The alpine plug has 4 or 5 wires. So what I would do is chop the alpine plug off (about 30cm from the plug). And hard wire that to as many wires as needed on the car side (you’ll have to chop those RCAS). Just make sure you remember what wire / colour from which plug you use and make the same connections at the front and that saves you running the cable. A multi meter with continuity test is the best way to do this just to make sure you’ve got the right connections all the way through. Hope that makes sense
Great Video mate, thanks. I have just purchased an Alpine iLX-702D from local dealer. Fitted to Jeep wrangler (2018) using Aerpro loom. No speakers are working?? The Alpine also didn't come with the CAN I/F loom (which the dealer claims Alpine doesn't supply, yet in the installation manual it gets referred to a lot!) so I am unable to connect after market camera using your method. Any suggestions?? TIA
Hi Mate, great vids. I have an Alpine iLX-702D, I tried your aftermarket camera to alpine direct camera trick. My camera is 12vdc and the Alpine output is 6vdc. Is there a setting in the head unit to step up the voltage output?
Grant Macmillan hi mate there is not. The alpine output is 6v but it’ll still power up most cameras just check your GND connections. If no luck you’ll have to power the camera from - Acc (red wire) 12v from reverse light One of those two. And just use this hard wire trick for the video signal and GND connection.
Thank you for this info!!! I actually have the opposite problem: I have an Alpine HCE-C252RD camera with the proprietary connector that I’m trying to connect to an ILX-F309 head unit that only has RCA input. I used a pair of resistors to get 6V for the camera. If I’m seeing your video correctly, I would connect the 6V to the black/yellow wires to the camera, and read video from the red/white wires (ignoring the green center wire, which I assume is for selecting the video angle). Do I have that correct? Or is the video coming off that camera not NTSC? Thanks again!!!
Ron Skopitz Hey mate! This plug comes from the head unit and the red/black are powers and the white/black are video signal. So you will need to check the plug of your camera and cross reference the pins so you don’t get the powers mixed up. That will eliminate assuming wiring colours. So you can give the camera power on the correct pins and then tap on the video signal to the rca on the unit does that make sense ?
@@TheFittingBay Thank you for the reply!! My question was too awkward - sorry! I'm really just looking for some data on the pinout for the Alpine selectable-view cameras (the connector is 5-wire like the one you are showing, but Alpine claims it's proprietary and can't be converted to RCA). Haven't been able to get video out, so I'm either stupid, or else I've fried it : ) Thanks again!!
On the back of the unit, the is a plug with a few different RCAS coming off of it. One of them is R cam. If the plug is not there you need to locate one.
I have the X009 from 2016, I bought a camera and tried hooking it up as you said, but all I get is the same old black screen. It is a 12V camera, but it still doesn't work when I hook it up to 12V. Please advise? I have been trying everything I can think of with no results. All wires have continuity.
Hi, thanks for this Video! I have an Alpine ILX-F115D Head unit. I tried to do it in this way, but on the red wire is always power on when the ignition is on (on the blue wire it is the same!?). I can not find any logic... I was thinking, the red wire is only powered if the camera is on...
will this allow you to turn on the rear camera while in drive? have a 2014 Chevy Silverado with an Alpine iLX-F411 and it would be great if I can turn on the rear camera while in Drive. Also would like to have a front camera but the F411 only allows for one camera. Any ideas on how to achieve that?
I have an alpine ILX-207 and I am trying to connect a rear backup camera the model is HCE-C1100 but i lost all the wire harness that came with the backup camera, Do you know where can I buy all the wires harness, with the connector etc. (I have all the wires of my radio ILX-207). Thank you
You’ll need to find a local store that is a verified alpine reseller and they can order it from alpine for you. Unlikely anyone will keep many spare parts on the shelf
That worked for me too thanks, but I have a weird problem that's unrelated. My radio reception on my Alipine ilx 702d is non existent on AM unless I go to the camera screen...even when I unplug the camera??? On the camera screen the radio is suddenly clear with good reception? What's up? I've checked the earth and it seems ok.
Michael Bateson Never heard of it. Have you got anything else tapped onto the camera direct plug whatsoever? Also the unit has 2 blue wires coming from the main harness (power outputs for amp and antenna) just double check exactly what they are connected to.
@@TheFittingBay So this also happens if I don't have the camera plug in the back of the unit as well. So I checked the blue wire that is the "power antenna" and strangely the power is not on when the radio is selected as checked with a multimeter. But if I go to the camera screen the wire is powered which is why the radio worked. So what I've done now is link the power cable of the antenna of the car (its a Lancer) to the accessories cable from the Harness(an Aerpro) and now it works. I guess that means that the antenna will always be powered when the car is on, but I though it was strange. (The blue wire for the amp is not connected to anything). Its weird.
Michael Bateson Good work! Exactly what I would’ve suggested to do next. That is extremely odd. If the unit is still in warranty period, I’d be testing every feature thoroughly. Usually when a unit is faulty there are more than 1 or 2 weird things it does. If that’s the only known issue not so bad but if you start noticing other weird things I’d probably get it changed over just to be safe.
Thank you for the information. It makes it easier to get started with the topic. :-) My problem is not that I have to connect an aftermarket camera, but only a 4-wire cable is pre-installed in the car. Zachary Collins Make sure video and shield connection is correct as per video. Take camera power and put it with normal Ignition power Take camera ground and put with normal ground (both on head unit power loom) Then try it again.
Help! I feel like i've tried everything. I have a X308U with a basic Amazon liscense plate camera that worked with my old Phoenix tesla style screen in my 07 Escalade EXT. I hooked it up just as you said both with the ground to the frame in the rear, then I tried running a seperate ground from the camera direct to the Alpine direct (splice). I also tried only powering from the Alpine Direct "red splice", and only from the reverse light. Nothing seems to work. The X308U has always switched to reverse camera mode with guide lines when put in reverse but I just cant seem to get any picture. I have verified that I am getting power to the camera, and I have solid ground. I have also tired 2 different cameras. Help!
Kyaw Kyaw Thein Usually. Alpine units don’t have settings for steering wheel control. You just need to plug it in (3.5ml) plug at the back. If not working you should check the module/wiring and also make sure the patch lead is correct

why would you run the cameras power to the front of the car, why not hook it into the reverse light at the back. Camera only needs power when in reverse.
Either way you need to run 12v from the rear light to the head unit to tell it to flick to reverse screen :) unless 1) you have OEM camera and you can retain it or 2) you have a CANBUS vehicle and the swc module has a reverse output.
@@TheFittingBay yes, but it doesnt make sense to me to run an EXTRA wire for power when you can just get that from the back of the car. unless you want the camera power to be a switched source so you can activate the camera whilst driving and not in reverse i guess.
