Can't help loving to listen Sutherland's voice.. Even though she's not known very well for this role, I gotta say she's definitely one of the best Toscas ever! And still this role was just a drop in the bucket for Sutherland! What an outstanding singer she is!
What a testament to sutherlands versatility and beautiful singing. I've heared millions of different sopranos sing this aria, and i have to say--i did not expect sutherland to do such a fantastic job with it. Definitely one of my favorite recordings of the aria. brava
all these comments about her not being physically suited for the role of Tosca.....What IS Tosca? A famous prima donna....which is exactly what Sutherland was. It is NOT true that only razor-thin Hollywood-style-beautiful people are the only ones capable of feeling and EXPRESSING love, jealousy, etc., all the emotions that are part of the role of Tosca
True, but did you know that Gobbi asked Sutherland to sing a string of Tosca's with him on stage? I'm sure he was aware of Sutherland's phenomenal vocal gifts. And Gobbi is a great artist because he knows if Sutherland wanted to, she could out sing him(we get a sample of this in this video when she effortlessly drowned him out when they sing at the same time. I really believe had Sutherland tackled Tosca, she would score another tremendous success...much like her Esclarmonde.
I don't think she ever sung this role completely on stage, but I know that Tito Gobbi thought she should. She might not be the greatest actress, but she did show emotion. Despite having a very different timbre from Callas, she was a Dramatic Soprano capable of singing coloratura. That's why voices like Sutherland's and Maria Callas are so rare. They were both Dramatic Coloratura's, both sang Wagner in the early part of their careers.
I have no doubt she could've been a great Tosca had she studied and worked more in this role. She had the expressive high notes, the powerful but youthful tone, the elegiac but authoritative timbre. Her interpretation here does lack more spontaneity and strength, but in "Vissi d'arte" she really understands the inner quality of this reflexive moment. She doesn't "show off", just sit and sing as a reflection, not as an exhibitionist moment like many sopranos do.
Interesting to hear Sutherland take on a role one would not immediately imagine her singing. Challenge well met. And although the Italian is not at all idiomatic I can understand her well enough.
This is a 1968 Bell Telephone Hourperformance with Donald Vorhees conducting the Bell Telephone Hour Orchestra. The same for the other 60's TV studio renditions on UA-cam (Lucia, Amina, Norma, Ophélie...)
Gobbi owns Scarpia; look at the evil smile on his face. Sutherland has the voice for this role and sings with her usual power to counteract this Scarpia. Bravissimi. Bravissimo. l
she might not have been the most expressive, but you can't say she wasn't musical. her technique was always flawless and her ornaments tasteful. she doesn't sound the best here being out of fach, but in her bel canto rep. every note she sings is beautiful and perfectly placed.
I love Tosca and have a couple of different recordings, including the Callas-Gobi pairing (a great recording!). In my opinion, Tito Gobi OWNS Scarpia! There's just no one like him! He's not just an amazing singer, he's a great actor! Thanks for sharing this video.
And after this performance, Tito Gobbi ask Joan to be his next Tosca. She declined. I feel if she had sung Tosca on stage, she would have rival many of the best Tosca, including Tebaldi and Callas.
LOL Rival Tebaldi and Callas in what? Both ladies had one hell of a powerful voice, both had crystal clear dictions, both had great low, both had great temperament, both had enough stage presence and both were beautiful ladies which is also important in convincing. Sutherland had none of these, she is best in coloratura territory. Seriously this is not her game. Though it's interesting to have excerpts of her in these roles.
No one touches Callas of course for ever and ever. But don't you ever insult Sutherland's beautiful song which is by far better than any of today's singers. But of course, Callas is the grestest Tosca, bar none. Next is Tebaldi because of tone. However, don't INSULT the other grestest singer of our time, Dame Joan Sutherland. No, she is not touching Callas in anyway here. But she does sing a beautiful "Vissi d'arte". Not in near the caliber of Callas, but still valid and definitely beautiful.
Thats because she never did this role onstage. This is the only recording of her ever doing it. It's hard not to look at it and wonder why she didn't- as usual she is excellent.
Thank you for being reasonable. I am SICK AND TIRED OF SUTHERLAND AND CALLAS HUGE FANS ATTACKING EACH OTHER WHEN THEY ARE BOTH THE GREATEST SINGERS IN HISTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stunning by both and Joan had no experience or long coaching as Tosca, I think for some screechy and forced sounds are more exciting, I would have paid to hear her as Tosca and if Gobbi the Great was Scarpia WOW.
Joan Sutherland never sang Tosca but recorded Visse d'arte in 1971/2 (available as a bonus on the last issue of Pussini's sor Angelica Decca recording). Here, her characterization is lacking of stength but pathos is here and what a f...ing good and wide voice: Vissi d'arte and the three "Aaahh" - 3:50!!!
Perhaps a stranger (not italian, I mean) does'n hear the difference; but Tito sings a perfectly intelligible italian, and Joan has a beautiful sound, but I can't understand a word of the text.
Joan had so many options in 1968. I still feel, if she sang Tosca on stage with Gobbi, it would given her more credit than even singing "The Daughter of the Regiment" and "Rigoletto" with Pavarotti at the Met. The reason is the role of Tosca is often associated with the ultimate Prima Donna. Without Tosca, Callas would not rival Joan. And with Tosca, Sutherland's legacy would have been far greater. I am sure it would be a great success if Joan took the challenge because she will be working with Zeffirelli and Gobbi. And as much as I love Richie, Zeff and Gobbi will bring different brilliant faceta in Joan's voice and art.
***** Sutherland sang small roles like Clotilde and Frasquita because she was still technically in training at Covent Garden. She knew when the time was right to take on larger and heavier roles. Callas' great acting and musicianship carried the last 5 years of her career. But to a great vocalist like Sutherland or Horne, thats putting the cart before the horse and we all know how that worked out for Callas.
***** The way both ''sides'' carry on about their respective favourites and the animosity towards the other, I think if both Callas and Sutherland were starting out today they'd just have to put their tails between their legs and abandon any hope of a career. In reality each was the others only rival in the Bel Canto repetoire, and although Callas was the greater actress, Sutherland was the more enduring vocalist. If there had been no Sutherland or Callas, then I believe Caballe wouldv'e been hailed as the great bel canto artist of the last half of the 20th century.
dame joan certainly have the huge voice to overpower even gobbi. she should have sung the entire role on stage or record it. it may be as good as her turandot.
Please don't use the name of Jesus in vain! I had the privilege to walk past Joan Sutherland and Luciano Pavarotti backstage at the Metropolitan Opera House. She was 6 foot tall but with heels she was 6' 2" ~ as tall as Luciano and I. When Joan Sutherland sang, the voice was so breathtakingly & beautifully huge that one didn't know from where it was coming. This great privilege I had in 1975 - 1976 at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City, Joan Sutherland sang BELLINI: I PURITANI and MASSENET: ESCLARAMONDE !
Extremely insulted. Sutherland is not Tosca. But she does not deserve insults like this. I am a Sutherland fan as well as Callas. And I will be equally insulted if Sutherland fans insult Callas as some do here...Very insulting.
Im sorry but this duet is all about titto Gobbi miss Southerlands well she is not a tosca and i have to agree with Lahire22... It takes a maria callas to sing a realistic tosca and Gobbi is awesome with Callas period
Tito you are one wonderful singer and a great scarpia just awesome about southerlands i dont know about her yes she has a great voice but a tosca no i dont think so here you see tito been scarpia while sutherlands trys to act tosca just bad...
Seems you read somewhere that Dame Joan's diction was poor so you automatically don't understand anything she is singing? While she's not the beat singing actress I've ever heard as Tosca, she does a fine job. You like others better? FINE! So do I! But why dismiss her great performance because of that? 2nd best is nothing? You try singing at her level, then...and let us all see where you rank.
Tito Gobbi portrays a great Scarpia but if you want to see and hear the real Scarpia--that's Ruggero Raimondi. As for Sutherland, wonderful voice but she isn't suitable for Tosca physically.
Since you seem to know EVERYTHING and cannot be bothered by reality, no use replying to your comments. Sutherland's diction was not always the best, true, but she was not bad all the time. Sorry, but pedants bore me to tears.
Sutherland was no verismo singer, and certainly not a Puccini virtuoso. Bad diction, lower register is smothered and becomes inaudible, and she doesn't seem to carry the voice with the music. She seems ridiculously behind the tempo.
She sings so effortlessly here, many other sopranos are huffing and puffing singing this!
Miss you Joan. People here can write what they want; their opinions don't matter. Those of us who know you and met you know you are the greatest!
Can't help loving to listen Sutherland's voice.. Even though she's not known very well for this role, I gotta say she's definitely one of the best Toscas ever! And still this role was just a drop in the bucket for Sutherland! What an outstanding singer she is!

I’ll take southerland’s beautiful silky voice over callas’ highly technical cat shriek any day.
True, but did you know that Gobbi asked Sutherland to sing a string of Tosca's with him on stage? I'm sure he was aware of Sutherland's phenomenal vocal gifts.

I have no doubt she could've been a great Tosca had she studied and worked more in this role. She had the expressive high notes, the powerful but youthful tone, the elegiac but authoritative timbre.

Scarpia is the man. Gobbi is Scarpia. Gobbi is the man!

Bravissimi voci. Ezzezionai
Gobbi. Satherland autentici ❤❤❤❤❤
Tito Gobbi, the best Scarpia.
Juan Sutherland is not Tosca, but she is very good in this rendition. Gobbi is Scarpia, the Best Scarpia we have ever heard
This is a 1968 Bell Telephone Hourperformance with Donald Vorhees conducting the Bell Telephone Hour Orchestra. The same for the other 60's TV studio renditions on UA-cam (Lucia, Amina, Norma, Ophélie...)
Thank you! I've had some trouble finding out who the conductor was.
Gobbi owns Scarpia; look at the evil smile on his face. Sutherland has the voice for this role and sings with her usual power to counteract this Scarpia. Bravissimi. Bravissimo.

Two monsters of opera! Brava Sutherland and Bravo Gobbi!

Vette gaddia
I think Joan Sutherland was a great singer, but, I have to say, Callas brought such fire to the role!

2 GREAT VOICES !
PS : Listen also to Sutherland in Turandot,
there is she BRILLIANT,
probably the BEST Turandot !
Two magnificent voices.

gobbi...the best scarpia!
Thats because she never did this role onstage. This is the only recording of her ever doing it. It's hard not to look at it and wonder why she didn't- as usual she is excellent.
Gobbi is fantastic in this role.
Thank you for this wonderful post. I've never seen it. Joan isn't the ideal physical type for Tosca, but the Vissi de Arte is beautifully sung.
How wonderful they both are
Nice souvenir
Thank you for being reasonable. I am SICK AND TIRED OF SUTHERLAND AND CALLAS HUGE FANS ATTACKING EACH OTHER WHEN THEY ARE BOTH THE GREATEST SINGERS IN HISTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

belleza de obra. grazie
Vossi d arti, vossi d amore....
Sutherland’s ‘Quanto?’ Is hilarious.
If it came to a wrestling match between these particular two, Tosca looks as if she’s got twice the upper body strength, no need for a knife

Great! considering this was a special thing done for the tv.
Fantasticia !!
Regards
Ricardo ;-)
Holy cow! Joan, singing Puccini beautifully, and matched against Tito Gobbi. When and where was this recorded?
Bello!
BRAVA!!!!!!!!!
I heard lots of Toscas...Lots of Scarpias, a few good ones. But the real SCARPIA is Gobbi
magnifici entrambi
Perhaps a stranger (not italian, I mean) does'n hear the difference; but Tito sings a perfectly intelligible italian, and Joan has a beautiful sound, but I can't understand a word of the text.
Tito Gobbi è il miglior Scarpia!

This was filmed in 1968.
Tremendamente bravo
Bravo! Yes, Tantris, you got it EXACTLY.
Joan Sutherland was 6 foot 2!!!! Jesus!
Barone Vitellio Scarpia yep I think she was more close to 5 foot 9. How tall are you?
Barone Vitellio Scarpia Does height and voice have any relationship?
Barone Vitellio Scarpia 5 foot 8 is a good height for a man.
I’m kind of tall for my age, 183 Cm
Please don't use the name of Jesus in vain! I had the privilege to walk past Joan Sutherland and Luciano Pavarotti backstage at the Metropolitan Opera House. for once i hear some of Joan's words.....hmm
Fabulous. So vulnerably womanly and feminine......
.....yet in real life we know who could have kicked some Greek ass.

WHAT YEAR IS THIS?
I agree as always jabey!
Great young vocalist for Puccini: maybe not her best role, but really stupenda.
clever dress!

Music above all

Fabio. Turri
And, plus, even if I am a big fan of Dame Sutherland, Tosca is a dramatic role, a coloratura soprano doesn't fit the role
