- Sutherland's surprisingly persuasive first contact with Puccini, aided by the best of Scarpios, Tito Gobbi.
Gia mi dicon venal... Vissi d'arte
(Vissi d'arte begins at 6:04)
I understand there not being enough time for Dame Joan to perform (or even record) every great opera but I do wish she had done
a recording of The Best of Puccini .Her recording of “Turandot” is a revelation and her Mimi, Musetta and Butterfly can only be dreamed
about.Thank you for this wonderful posting.Leontyne Price was always my no.1 Tosca but Joan Sutherland is right up there with her.💕
Brilliant acting from Gobbi and Sutherland. Their Voices worked well together
Sutherland is extremely touching here... Gobbi is beyond description
The first "Tosca" i can actually listen to, mainly because of Sutherland's Beautiful rendition.
Beautifully done. She sings the aria as it should be done... a moment of introspection, a prayer, subdued with no hystrionics. She learned much from Callas. Gobbi is wonderful. It is no accident that he was chosen for her only outing as Tosca. Brivissimi.
The first time I have been moved, deeply moved by the "Vissi d'arte" in years. Proving again that the best way to the emotional heart Opera is through a beautiful voice, singing beautifully.
" heart of opera..." sorry...
search for Gwyneth Jones' Vissi d'arte (1972)
@@rattusyu5905 an out of tune one no thanks
She looked fabulous!!!!!
The incomparable Joan Sutherland.
Never knew this existed. It's too bad she never performed the role complete in a staged performance. For her it would have been entirely within her grasp, though possibly repeated performances could have compromised her fabulous bel canto technique. But for whatever it's worth, she's very involved here, sounds flawless, and she's singing with the best Scarpia in the business.
Personally, the role I wish Joan Sutherland had performed complete is Verdi's Luisa Miller...It's interesting how good Tito Gobbi sounds here. Even though he's older than he was when he sang Scarpia with Maria Callas, his tone actually sounds better here, imo.
According to Sutherland’s biography, Gobbi begged her to sing Tosca onstage with him. He thought she was perfect. Bonynge wouldn’t hear of it though. He felt that Puccini was wrong for her voice at that stage.
Gobbi actually sang Scarpia, and Falstaff in Melbourne and Adelaide in 68-69, so maybe he was trying to lure her to do it there with him in her home country.
Stunning. What great voices they had. Incredible singing and wonderful interpretation.from both. Much better than I could expect from dame Sutherland, for this is not her cup of tea. This is opera at its best, not what we are having now.
Dame Joan!
I had no idea Joan Sutherland ever did Tosca, very beautiful.
This is all she did of it :) She later wrote in one of her books that Gobbi had tried to persuade her to do "Tosca" on stage with him, but she had declined even though she had been flattered by his request.
The best Vissi I’ve heard. I have the famous Callas recording, but (trigger warning) the Callas voice is harsh and ugly.
Thank you for this very interesting clip. She was after all a diva!!
And a very great one, and great lady too
Joan and Gobbi recorded a beautiful little opera called "L'Oracolo" by Leoni....set in San Francisco about Asian Opium "addicts and dealers" it's really beautiful music and the combination of Joan and Gobbi is quite nice.
It's a little gem of an opera.
I have literally never heard of that but now I’m extremely curious!!!! Lol thanks for letting me (and others) know about this! :3
@@LaDivinaLover You're welcome!
I love that recording
@@LaDivinaLover It's been released on cd both on its own and on double discs partnering "Suor Angelica". There's both a nice love duet and an aria for Sutherland.
Imagine a full Tosca with her O.O
Lol. I looove joan but this role should be left to tebaldi or callas
@@voilosapete4731 Or Leontyne Price!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Joan was offered the role many times early in her career but she was never interested in taking it.
@@vcaus thank God she wasn't. Any screamer can sing this role. Almost no one can simg Beatrice
Shame she did not sing/ or record the entire role. She had so little time with this scene to rehearse.
I believe this is from a “Bell Telephone Hour” production called “Opera - Two to Six”. It was this duet, trio from Faust, quartet from Rigoletto, quintet from Die Meistersinger, and the Lucia sextet!
I was prepared for her to be dreadful in this role, but I was surprised how much I liked her. She's very vulnerable, and I like the soaring voice. The downside is a lack of temperament and poor diction, especially the avoidance of the "ee" sound. "Vissi d'arte" becomes "Vassi d'arte."
I clearly hear "Veesee." She had what she described as a "round sound," which assisted in producing her untouchable bel canto singing. She had the greatest voice God ever gave a singer, IMO; whatever she may have lacked in clarity was more than made up for in vocal splendor, of which no other soprano has ever come close.
@Shahrdad
If your "concern" is the pronunciation of One vowel, it seems to me that you are *looking* for something to complain about.
......sounding like the disciples/acolytes of some of the highly opinionated people who post opera, and believe Only their Opinions are Truth.
"BAD Singer" , "In the Mask," "Horne was terrible" "Fleming is a joke"..Placido sucks....etc etc etc
😎😎😎
@@rugby8-Philadelphia Simple explanation: she spoke/sang Italian with an Australian accent

When singing with open throat EE has to remain open and in the throat otherwise voice placement is compromised and you end up sounding shrill and slip into squeezed nasal tones.
It is a case of balancing on a tightrope,,,
the amount of compromise is up to the individual artist
Sutherland and Tosca. Surprisingly nice. Though I can hardly understand half the words.
She is a real regina indeed!
Joan gave you beautiful tones. Maria gave you her soul.
@jasonhurd
This post isn't about Maria. Its not "Compare and Contrast"
Dame Joan was surprisingly touching, though her vowels were truly horrible to hear! What fascinated me was to see Tito Gobbi's compelling facial expressions devoid of the dramatic make-up he usually applied for Scarpia.
What a wonderful combination - Tito Gobbi and Joan Sutherland.
Notice how Sutherland tower over Gobbi in this live performance. Callas did not tower over Gobbi when they sang Tosca and Scarpia in their live video.
This is not meant to say Callas was not the greatest Tosca in history. But to note that Sutherland had at least as large a voice as Callas.
Gobbi is Scarpia, that's simple. Sutherland... Well. Her "Vissi d'Arte" is absolutely beautiful. For the rest, she's not Tosca at all, of course. Callas killed the role forever anyway.
Dramatic role suited her true voice
Beautiful voice, Joan’s here. Even the diction is ok. But her sound is just so polished and kind of guarded/cushioned/filtered; Puccini/verismo is supposed to be more about direct, raw emotion. Also, temperament/characterization-wise, this is not a Tosca I would ever in a million years believe could actually stab a man to death. Wish somebody could have pushed Joan more out of her comfort zone with that divine vocal gift she had...
The Surprise of the Century ! The Dame is Great ! Gobbi is a very good actor but in poor metallic voice. He is not what he was, but still better than many modern baritones. But Sutherland is unforgettable .
Just when you thought Sutherland knew what she was doing in Tosca, she calls for a character from another opera, Tonio, Tonio, TONIO!! (4:43)
She is saying I hate you
@julianawells7488 Tosca says that but Sutherland is pronouncing so poorly it sounds like a different word. She never cared.
It is obvious here that Sutherland is responding to the challenge of Gobbi's spectacular Scarpia and that she is being helped by whoever is conducting [it is clearly not the second rate Bonynge]. With the right cast, conductor and director she could have been a fine [not great] Tosca. Her physical expression at the Quanto/il Prezzo is fine and her Vissi is also very good.
"Second rate"? According to who/what? You might have a look at the honours he accumulated
Where is Scarpia's death?
Donde fue la representacion?

She is totally out of her element. Callas and Tebaldi need not fear for their posthumous reputations. I saw Gobbi twice as Scarpia and his effect was severely compromised by the problems with every note above D.
True. His voice wasn't good
Sutherland/Tosca...no way! I adore her, but it is not her role

.....shhhhhhh
Assolutamente troppo composta e belcantistica... Non è suo repertorio
