Eleven years ago today, on 10-10-10, the greatest voice I ever heard died, but dear Joan, whom I heard 63 times live, cannot be bettered. La Stupenda remains stupendous , yes, for always. No one has come near her since or is ever likely to. RIP Joan, but your wonderful voice will always be with us forever.
A delightful tribute - I remember it well the evening the BBC broadcast live the farewell performance. She is a model to singers on how to develop a great voice. Very difficult today as circumstances have changed so much and few singers have a conductor/husband prepared to work as Bonynge did. This is probably the last of this kind of career. Certainly the future of opera looks precarious now.
Brings back great memories for me. I saw her on the Met stage many times since the 1970s, as well as odd places like Brooklyn’s Academy of Music and Buffalo’s Kleinhans Hall. She was indeed La Stupenda.
18:28 never saw this TV appearence in my Life. Where's that from? I cant believe, Greer was there too! I've always thought she looked like Joan. What a treat was seeing her here! Thank you!!!
