I remember going there. We stayed for the whole festival week. On the last day they even put ice in it. It was fun. We were at Bagan .we also saw people riding those roofless cars. So we wanted to try that and asked some of the locals if we can have a ride. And they said yes. We were like what like for free. I don't think everyone does that but we were lucky tho. Next year we are also planning on going there. In Mandalay there are parades in the morning. So we'll see how it is. May be try asking for a ride again 😉🤗
I remember being hit once or twice by ice-cold buckets of water during Thingyan. That was a shock to the system, but it was also very welcome, as it was so hot. I'm probably just being a dummy, but for the life of me, I can't think what you mean by the roofless cars in Bagan. Did I see or talk about something like that in one of my videos? It's probably something quite obvious, but I don't remember any type of roofless car. You'll have to explain that reference to me. 😁
@@jamlessdude8099 Ah! That makes sense. I thought that's what you meant, but I wasn't sure. I thought maybe there was some kind of futurist vehicle I had missed. 🙂 Riding around on those trucks was a fun experience. I was just filming them from the side of the road, and then they would invite me to jump on board. I guess each city would have different water "stations" located in various neighborhoods, and these trucks drive from one to the other. I heard that the route these trucks follow in Mandalay is quite fun.
Those roofless trucks are what I totally miss about Thingyan. But sadly, Thingyan Culture in Yangon is shifting towards a modern electronic music festival. I miss those times when people would just walk around, get splashed, eat free food and have fun with all the people they see along the way, strangers or not. This year would be my fourth consecutive year on missing out on Thingyan but I've always wanted to be home in Thingyan.
The atmosphere is great and that has probably uplifted you a great deal. It’s good to see you happy getting wet in the water festival. Myanmar people are generally more low keyed unlike the Thais in their celebrations of festive season. I haven't celebrated Thingyan in Yangon for well over 2 decades now but still remember what a fun time I had back in the day. And now I got to vicariously enjoy the sight, sound and experience through you. So thanks!
awwn..I am Burmese living in Canada rn. It’s been 2 years without celebrating Thingyan festival bcus of covid and our country’s current political situation.I miss Thingyan so much.Hope things are going to be better soon.
I hope so, too. I just saw an article online yesterday that said Myanmar was going to open to international flights and foreign tourists on April 17. (With testing and quarantine, etc.) However, the reaction online wasn't positive, as you can imagine. I think most people would hesitate to visit Myanmar at this time with the current situation. They wouldn't want to be seen as supporting the military. It's such a sad situation. Myanmar is such a special country. It's awful that this latest coup largely cut the country off from the outside world again.
did u try the free foods? one of the free foods named "mont lone yae paw" is a must try. my mom used to make it every year. u can't have it anymore since we haven't celebrated thingyan for 3 years but u can make it at home (if u have the ingredients).
My friend & I were there too at that time. ^^ we visited there from Korea for holiday and we encountered the Thingyan and trapped there in Yangon for a few days.
Thingyan in Myanmar seems quite a contrast to the Songkran of Thailand, especially in Pattaya. In Yangon, it appears to have a lower tempo with shades of sombre religious festivity, as compared to the outragious revelry you find in Pattaya sans the religious gaiety. You provided a good insight into the festival there. Wonder why tourists seem to be shy of Myanmar. Malaysia too has far less tourist as compared to neighbouring Thailand, despite the many tourist friendly and attractive tourist spots, it has to offer. Perhaps, it may be due to the fact that, the common neighbour has a more attractive and powerful pull with Sex Tourism, in addition to the.beaches, nature trails and adventure recreational sports it has to offer. It is always a pleasure watching your videos with your good narration as well as sharing thoughts as you see stuff when moving along. Thank you.
I'm surprised that you found the festivities in Yangon somewhat tame compared to Songkran in Pattaya. The scene in Pattaya must be pretty wild indeed! 😃 Then again, I'm not the best judge of revelry. I'm not exactly a wild and crazy party dude, so the scene during Thingyan here struck me as pretty wild. As for tourism, I guess Thailand is just a well-known and familiar commodity. People know the names Bangkok/Kao San Road, Chiang Mai, Ko Lanta, Ko Pha Ngan, Ko Samui, Phuket, and Ko Tao, etc. They know that when they go to Thailand, they're going to have fun. Myanmar is mysterious and unknown by comparison. Myanmar has been somewhat closed to outsiders for a long time, and I think it still has a reputation as being very difficult to visit. I felt the same when I planned this trip. I thought getting a visa and dealing with money and hotels would be more difficult than it turned out to be. 🙂
Thailand songran is just copy version for myanmar thingyan. We celebrated thingyan since bagan era. When Myanmar Toungoo empire ruled thailand at 15centuary,they got that tradition.thank
Douglas, Good to see that you're having fun in Yangon! I have a question for you... Do you find any similarity between Myanmar and Malaysia as a former British colony?
I don't know enough about either country to go deep into that topic, of course. But there are some obvious similarities that point to the British influence. One is the presence of the English language. Not as many people speak English in Myanmar as in Malaysia, of course, but I still manage to get through my days pretty easily using English. And you see the similarity in the buildings and the architecture, of course. And I've seen a number of tea shops. There's nothing more British than tea, is there? I see the same British-style electrical plug in use here. And they used to drive on the left here just as in Malaysia. But then they switched to driving on the right. There are probably lots more small similarities like that. I'm sure there have to be similarities in the political and legal systems, but I don't know much about any of that. 🙂
• The microphone seem a lot better than previous videos • Video stabilization looks very good even in this situation • 8:13 Is this the free meals that you said? • Good to know they are quickly cleaning it up. • 13:31 Is that ambulance sounds? • Are you planning to visit museum? Another crash course history will be good.
I think the microphone sounded better, too, even with all the water. And on the third day, it was even better because I switched the settings to "Stereo" only. With that setting, the noise cancellation never kicked in so the audio wasn't constantly shifting and changing randomly. In the long run, I think an external mic is preferable. I went to a high-end camera store today where they sold GoPro products, but unfortunately, they didn't carry the audio adapter. I'll probably pick one up when I am in Bangkok or back in KL. Stabilization is very, very good. I'm quite pleased with that. In fact, other than the poor audio, I like the GoPro a lot. The image quality has been good. The screen is very bright and I can see it no matter how bright the sun is. When the sun is bright, I can't see anything on my Panasonic's LCD. But I can see the GoPro screen perfectly. And I love that the GoPro has a blinking red light to indicate when it is recording. No, those aren't the free meals at 8:13. That woman is selling some snacks on her own. The free meals were at large booths that were set up by companies or volunteer organizations. Even the tourist police office had some free food and drinks for tourists. I happened to walk by their office, and they gave me a drink and a bag of local snacks to try. Based on my few days in Yangon, there seems to be a strong sense of the value of philanthropy in Myanmar. Yes, that is an ambulance at 13:31. I read a couple of articles later on about the number of people that were hospitalized or died during the Thingyan festival. With this much traffic, alcohol, and water, there are accidents and fatalities every year, and they prepare for that. However, it seems that the fatalities were significantly lower this year than in previous ones. I'd like to visit a museum and learn something of the history and culture. I feel a bit bad, actually, that I know as little as I do. I kept intending to do some reading about the history of Myanmar, but life got in the way, and I didn't find the time. So I don't know very much as yet about this country I'm visiting.
Woodstock '94 was awesome, but the mud was not. In fact, most places smelled like shit. I kept telling myself it was only residual "honey" that was spread in many months previously, but I am certain the washroom facilities were insufficient. Anyway, how was the mud by the end of Thingyan Water Festival day 3?
Things were surprisingly clean and organized even by Day 3. Of course, that's partially because all the water was landing on pavement for the most part. It just drained away without creating any mud. But it was also because the event was so well-organized. At least it seemed that way to me. I was pleasantly surprised by the level of organization I saw with clean-up crews, traffic police, first-aid stations, and volunteer organizers. On the one hand, there was almost total abandon as everyone was having fun and dancing in the streets and on the trucks. And there was a lot of drinking. But it never got out of control either. 🙂
"Thingyang" Water festival looks similar like "Songkhran" festival in Thailand. Dont know whether they are in line with the same principles and believes?
Exactly the religious aspect of it. Burma and Thailand share the same type of Buddhism, Theravada. Back in the day, new year meant cleansing friends and families with gentle water shower but it turned into what it is, has been so for a long time now.
Over the three days of the festival, I spotted the occasional obvious foreigner (ie, white dude like me). But in total, I probably saw five of them and that's all. There was one group of three I remember. And then I think I spotted a couple of guys on their own. I'm sure there were some tourists from other Southeast Asian countries, but they wouldn't have been as obvious to me.
I haven't been out in the evening very much, unfortunately. On every day of the water festival, my GoPro encountered some kind of problem, and most (one time, all) of the video files disappeared from the memory cards. So I spent the evenings running file recovery programs to try to recover them. That was how my days went - go out exploring and shoot video. Then go back to the hostel and spend the nights recovering the video files. 😃🤣 Things have improved since then, though. The GoPro is working better.
The reason we don’t have festivals like this in the west no more is..the country needs to be all of the same culture.. the west has lost their own culture, their identity...shame
Both. But as far as I know Myanmar started it. Most People know about Thailand but not much knows about Myanmar. Bcoz Myanmar was closed to the outside world for a long time. I think for the traditional stuffs you should go to myanmar. They have free meals, walking area thingyan,in Mandalay there are parades and they do good stuffs for the abandoned elders. But if you like modern style go to Thailand. I have been to both. 😂😃
Do you mean the differences between the GoPro Hero 7 Black, Silver, and White? As far as I understand it, there are BIG differences between them in terms of the features you get. I never even considered the Silver or White GoPros because neither of them has the new HyperSmooth stabilization or TimeWarp video. Only the Black has those. And those were the main thing that attracted me to the GoPro in the first place. I think it breaks down something like this: Black - $400 - 12-megapixel sensor and has all the features Silver - $300 - 10-megapixel sensor and doesn't have Live Streaming, HyperSmooth stabilization, SuperPhoto, TimeWarp video, Protune, Super-Suit diving case White - $200 - 10-megapixel sensor and doesn't have Live Streaming, HyperSmooth, SuperPhoto, TimeWarp video, Protune, Super-Suit diving case, GPS, or WDR Plus, the battery on the Black is removable, so you can have three or four batteries to get you through the day. In the Silver and White models, the battery is built-in. So you only get one battery and then you have to plug them in to recharge them. That's a deal breaker for me because one battery doesn't last very long. Also, the Black has 8X slo-mo while the Silver and White only have 2X slo-mo. The Black has 3 microphones with stereo. The Silver and White have just 2 and no stereo. You can attach an external microphone to the Black (with an adapter), but you can't do that with the Silver or White. The Black also has HDMI-out. The Silver and White don't. Honestly, there are so many features missing from the Silver and the White versions that I don't think they make much sense. The Black is the way to go, I think. 😃
I did have fun. I went out into the festival for three days, and, of course, I got soaking wet every time. It was actually a nice relief from the intense hot sun. The video from the second day should be posted this afternoon, though I'm having trouble with copyright claims. There was so much music playing over the public loudspeakers that it's impossible to avoid. 😄
It was kids' paradise as far as that goes. 😄 Three days of squirt guns, wading pools, sprinklers, garden hoses, and even firehoses. I started to wonder where all that water could be coming from. I wasn't sure the pipes of Yangon could carry so much.
I often think about the tragedy of the ongoing situation in Myanmar. There was a phenomenal level of optimism and happiness in Myanmar during my visit. There was a feeling in the air of a young country opening up to the world and moving towards a great future. And then came the coup, and everything changed. I don't know how many years it is going to take for Myanmar to get back to the happy and optimistic country that I visited in 2019, but I hope it happens soon.
I never experience these kind of water festival thing....one of the reason is because my friend says if someone spread acid on me instead of water....I know it sounds crazy right? But if it really happen..... Thats why until today Im not dare to join this festival yet....
Halim Vlog Songkran is just a copy of MYANMAR THINGKYAN(water festival) ... and yes for now thailand is trying to claim myanmar's traditional THANAKHA as it's original. All because of our bad ex-leaders . So Sad 😓
I first thought like that too. But I noticed that it's because they get wet and they dance to modern songs. So wearing traditional dress isn't appropriate. But I see some wearing those. But mostly those who were dancing to traditional songs
U cant freely move with traditional dress with water.Thats why they wore modern dress. But its only in big city like yangon. The other place maintain tradition
I'm Myanmar and I work in US right now.I really miss my country and this video makes me happy.Thank you!

Thingyan is comin soon come back again
Welcome
Thank you. 🙂
Really missed 2020’s Myanmar Thingyan festival that was cancelled due to Coronavirus disease.
Hope I’ll have a chance to celebrate it in 2021.
Sadly, that was a nono:(
i miss home
Doesn't look much different between the local weekly market of southern Phillipines in Mindanao Province .
The reason we don’t have festivals like this in the west no more is..the country needs to be all of the same culture.. the west has lost their own culture, their identity...shame
Thailand &a Myanmar which one its good ?
Ya Both
Any difference gopro7 in other colour? I’m interested to purchase
I think it breaks down something like this:
Black - $400 - 12-megapixel sensor and has all the features
Silver - $300 - 10-megapixel sensor and doesn't have Live Streaming, HyperSmooth stabilization, SuperPhoto, TimeWarp video, Protune, Super-Suit diving case
White - $200 - 10-megapixel sensor and doesn't have Live Streaming, HyperSmooth, SuperPhoto, TimeWarp video, Protune, Super-Suit diving case, GPS, or WDR
Plus, the battery on the Black is removable, so you can have three or four batteries to get you through the day.
Hope you have fun getting wet during this water festival! Haaa
glad you buy Gopro, easy to handle 🤣
Sh*t started after that festival. The Pandemic and the coup killed Gen Z Era's Dream. So many dreams.😢
This is the last thingyan for us, covid strike 2020 and coup strike 2021... what a sad things. 😅
ေပ်ာ္စရာႀကီး
6:35 what is the name of the song...thank you
I'm sorry, but I don't know. I don't know if it is an original song by that band or if they are covering some well-known classic song from Myanmar.
@@PlanetDoug thank u ^^
I am watching your channel. I respect you for living a wonderful life. I have a question. What job are you? How are you making money?
i miss myanmar. so sad . :(

Do u know AC DC ? And we have 10:49

Kids in portable pools and squirt guns. My son would love it!
It was kids' paradise as far as that goes. 😄 Three days of squirt guns, wading pools, sprinklers, garden hoses, and even firehoses. I started to wonder where all that water could be coming from. I wasn't sure the pipes of Yangon could carry so much.
I miss Myanmar 😂😂😂
Nice video friend thank you sharing sub your channel.
I wntto go myanmar🤭😥😥
Its thingyan in myanmar right now but we r not having this😢cause of military coup😞 560 people r dead helppp😢😢
😢😢
I often think about the tragedy of the ongoing situation in Myanmar. There was a phenomenal level of optimism and happiness in Myanmar during my visit. There was a feeling in the air of a young country opening up to the world and moving towards a great future. And then came the coup, and everything changed. I don't know how many years it is going to take for Myanmar to get back to the happy and optimistic country that I visited in 2019, but I hope it happens soon.
Who arrive that country
👇
its actully pronuce as da.gyen.
No offence but I'm sure it's pronounce thing-gyan
NO THINGYAN
THIS IS THINGKYAN
I never experience these kind of water festival thing....one of the reason is because my friend says if someone spread acid on me instead of water....I know it sounds crazy right? But if it really happen..... Thats why until today Im not dare to join this festival yet....
i am from myanmar, that can't be in mynmar.please.enjoy first yourself.and comment later.i will wait you with happiness at our next thingyan festival.
songkran in myanmar 😂
Original water festival is from myanmar
Pyaw Mal YEP!
Halim Vlog Songkran is just a copy of MYANMAR THINGKYAN(water festival) ... and yes for now thailand is trying to claim myanmar's traditional THANAKHA as it's original. All because of our bad ex-leaders . So Sad 😓
Yudaya.... 😂😂😂 အရူံးသမား
There are very few women wearing traditional dress.
Perhaps this festival season is an opportunity to dress up/western?
I first thought like that too. But I noticed that it's because they get wet and they dance to modern songs. So wearing traditional dress isn't appropriate. But I see some wearing those. But mostly those who were dancing to traditional songs
U cant freely move with traditional dress with water.Thats why they wore modern dress. But its only in big city like yangon. The other place maintain tradition
G
