Nice find and fix! If you wanna run a straight axle most of the other makes that run 2300 such as murray dynamark mtd lawn chief etc usually had keyed axles, the Deere was the only one (usually) that had the splined hubs that I’ve seen

I’m gonna let it ride for now with the welded gears but at some point I think I’ll have a blank section of 1” chrome axle steel machined with splines on each end and a keyway in the middle for a Doc Loc
Probably won’t happen but I like to think about it 😅

I had the same 2300 in an MTD I called budgie and filled all the teeth I wasn’t using in on the axle gears, and just left the spider gears alone. It worked good and as far as I know is still fine now 6 years later. That tractor is probably about 300lbs less than your JD though. I welded an 820 the same way and never broke it! I only started having problems with my locker when I went to a straight axle, there’s just not a very good way to get power from the axle to the bullgear. That’s why I’m building the locker on my channel now. If you went straight axle you would definitely want something like that. In fact the 2300 differential is near identical to my 820. As for the axle ends you definitely want to stick to splines. Keyed hubs suck in comparison to splines.
Another option is to switch over to a pair of splined axles found in craftsman tractors with 3spd hi/lo. That would require just about as much machining as the straight axle option though, and I’m not sure if those axles would be close enough in length anyway.
Sorry for the book haha! Lockers are lots of trouble and as a machinist I spend a lot of time trying to come up with the best solutions for them!

Thank you for writing a book!!! That’s exactly what I was looking for! I’m not a machinist, however I have been working with steel, welding and such for almost 30 years. I have a feeling for how metal behaves. That’s why I didn’t attempt to weld that shaft to the gears again. Thank you for your advice, I greatly appreciate it! I will be definitely paying attention to your locker build videos!!!

No problem! Whereabouts are you in Tennessee? I’m near bowling green, KY, you could be fairly close to me!

I’m in a little town called Granville, about 20 miles West of Cookeville, about 1 hour 15 minutes East of Nashville N of I-40

Looks like you’re about two hours from me! I’m planning on having a mower ride at Blue Holler in the spring, looks like it’s about two hours from you. I will let you know when we have it planned, if you’re interested!

Also I love you Brake setup but have you considered making a guard or skid for it? Looks pretty well out of the way but a unlucky guy like myself I seem to get rocks poked in weird places so I think a guard would be a nice addition

Yes sir I need to make a guard for that and the lower belt guide on the transmission. I haven’t even gotten this thing on any crazy terrain yet but there’s already dings and stuff on the bottom side of the transmission

Nice work. Quick question my peerless keeps jumping out of 3rd. Not trying to tear it apart if i don't have to, but any ideas appreciated.

I’m no expert on all things Peerless, but, what model is it?

@@Tennesseemountainhomestead I will have to look at the numbers on the transmission, but it came on my 1962(?) Burns/Penfield. It goes into all the gears fine, just keeps jumping out of 3rd. It's been hard trying to find info on these tractors.

From what I understand, the gears in most transmissions mesh by sliding left and right on their shafts at 90 degree angles. The only reasons I could think of why it would come out of mesh on its own is if the gears are worn, or the shaft bearing(s) the gears are on have worn as well.
