At least some comedians are paying some REAL respect to Norm. It’s sad knowing Norm is gone but with these last few days of newly surfaced clips/podcast talking about his legacy...he’s not gone but will live forever throughout his Comedy. I love all three of you.

The interviews with Conan are priceless - especially with Norm and Bill Burr - and merit repeated viewings. As do the Jason Schlansky routines.

Andy has hit the nail on the head. Norm was Canadian. But there’s an added element.
Norm was a rural Canadian. And his parents were both teachers. So he was a country gentleman of sorts…who knew that teachers are full of and that a lot of intellectual pretense is puffed-up nonsense.
So he emphasized old-timey values with a huge vocabulary and a farm hands’ sensibilities.
Most people live in cities now. Norm was a country fella smarter than 90% of city people.
    That’s why he was unique.

I interviewed him once, it was two phone calls. I was already a huge fan, but that conversation changed my entire outlook on comedy, telling a story. Much like how conan, that era of the simpsons did.
It's not "the joke", or "the story", it's how you tell it. And it's masterpiece when you see somebody create a moment that you feel is just for you. It's like falling in love, or making a friend. And now, there's only memories.
To a personal hero, may you find peace telling jokes to the people in the sky.

Part of the appeal of norm on talk shows was watching the hosts react to him. He always seemed incredibly content. I don’t know if he was or not though. I hope he was. He seemed like a person who could thrive under any circumstances. As a fan, I always felt like we needed him way more than he needed us- In the moment and throughout his career. Sometimes I got Norm right away, sometimes I’d sit on something he said- feeling way more that I just didn’t get it than it was a bad joke. But I sure appreciated him even when something went over my head. Just way too soon to lose him.

One of the things that made Norm MacDonald so legendary, was that he could tell a traditional joke where normally you'd have to think about the punchline, and he'd make that punchline more obvious, but twist it in such a way that the punchline you'd normally have to think about, would be more obvious.
