I loved that glint in Norm MacDonald's eyes. It was cheeky and adorable.
Same. It was like a secret weapon.
Norm's handsomeness is not talked about enough. I guess because his comedy is so brilliant. But Norm was always a charming son of a bitch.
@@LucasNauan it was definitely the dimples and the fact that his eyes always smiled even if his mouth didn’t. Of course, it was rare that he wasn’t actually smiling. His face seemed frozen that way 😆
@@LucasNauan So true. I had a big crush on him when he had his Norm show. I always found him charming.
@@LucasNauan I agree. I'm no Swedish-German but Norm really had a beautiful face.
Norm was such a polite Canadian -- he went out of his way to make sure everyone knew that Andy Richter the Swedish-German doesn't go for that funny stuff either!
but still at the end
" The Swedish German"
he had his dignity.😁
When you say Norm was taking care of Courtney Thorne-Smith, I think that is exemplified by the "Box Office Poison" moment. He started to just blurt it out. If you pay attention, you hear "Bo-" before he restrained himself. And then he set up the joke to make sure everyone knew he was making fun of Carrot Top and not her. "If it's got Carrot Top in it..." That he recognized in such a quick moment that his quip could hurt her and immediately fixed it so that it wouldn't is kind of amazing.
She did his sitcom a few years after that. Courtney knew it wasn't going to be a hit film and she was set to star in Ally McBeal so she wasn't worried about her career.
nice insight. Norm was sensitive like that. One of a kind.
Chairman of the Bored
Carrot top is such a good sport. People still rip on him constantly
I was literally just thinking this when I was rewatching that clip. I’m glad someone else caught it too
Conan really loved Norm.
They had the best interactions.
According to Bob Saget, Conan was a really good friend of Norm off camera so they spoke often. Imagine, they met in 1993 and continued to be good friends until Norm’s last days.
Dave also truly cared and cares for Norm. Dave's love for Norm is as well...undying.
Yep. Conan was the best late night host ever at interviewing and playing off great comedians.
@@kendallandrews8691 Especially with Norm. Nobody set Norm up or reacted to Norm better than Conan.
@@purleybaker I really felt Jacque Gat Dinou was serving a youthful porpoise.
Between Conan and Letterman, Norm single-handedly provided the best 'off the rails experience' for either late night show and there was no stopping it, and everyone got sucked in. Rest easy Mr. Macdonald.
I would say Bill Burr is better, but Norm was still great...
You can’t forget about him ripping Larry King too, his Larry king impersonation interview is the funniest thing I’ve seen
Whenever I see a moth in a light I will take that as a signal from Norm
@@austinwilliams1094 Wow, you guys must have been close
😂😂😂
@@herbie0408 That was good haha
Rest In Peace Norm. His appearances on your show were unrivaled. Such great chemistry and content from you all 👍🏻
The only tribute I was concerned with was Conans. Pure art the chemistry they had, and you could always see the respect Conan had for him.
I could totally imagine Norm walking out onto Conans show and saying, “Conan? What are you doing here bud?”
😅🤣 yes. Like " whoa great to see you here" at your show. The Conan show.. With his huge smile and dimples . "One day ill have a show called Norm. And ill play Norm."
I don't know why, but the thought of this made my cry...
Conan’s channel has become a digital time capsule for the best of Norm. We are eternally grateful for Conan and his team for doing this. Please, keep going. Keep the light on for Norm. ;)
Also, Larry King’s interview with Norm is wonderful. Norm shows his humanity, tenderness, values and his low key wit. His analysis of other “brainy” comics. His reverence for comedy. RIP
yes that is such a great largely unknown interview
Thank you both for suggesting it, I'll check it out.
@@maynotreply3505 it's a deeply closeted interview
That one's good because more people need to know how sincere he was about his values. A lot of people mistake his comedic irreverance for him being an actual nihilist, and nothing could be further from the truth.
The beauty of norm was that on late night the host is always in control (even if they pretend they’re not)
But when norm was on, the host was NEVER on control. Norm owned that piece of time . It was amazing in the controllled world of late night.
Fuxking love you Norm
So true. I am constantly watching comedians pair together to see which one takes control of the dynamic and drives the comedic pace. With Norm, it's him virtually every time. I think I can only recall him giving up the control to Jim Carrey (and I believe that's just because Jim turns up the energy to 11 regardless of the comedic value; which isn't to say Jim is unfunny by any means). And Norm of course backs off the gas when he's with someone he reveres and wants to see do their thing, like Chevy Chase, etc. But generally, he is always the dominant comedian in the room.
He's up in heaven with a Moth ordering Polish sausage from Hardware stores.
💔😢
@@getcheese In honor of Norm, you could try telling it to hardware store owners by telling them you know good hardware store jokes...and slipping in that your polish before you bring it up
Heaven.. yea ok
Maybe he's wishing to club a seal to death. Whatever God has in store for us
Does he have a doghouse?
"dogs don't talk, I'm not stupid"...
It's true what he said about the 'generous' laugh and the 'true' laugh. The only two people I've seen to consistently make Conan really laugh - Norm, and Bill Burr.
Timothy olyphant too

I was 13-14 when Conan went on the air and Norm started hosting Weekend Update.
My comedy heroes.
I turn 42 next week. Grew up on Conan and SNL.
Doesn’t get any better than them. Ever.
Norm was easily Conan's greatest recurring guest, there will never be another. We love you Norm.
Atleast we still have Bill Burr...
This entire conversation warms my heart. I remember watching the Courtney Thorne Smith Interview as a teenager live in my parent’s basement, on a small tv with terrible reception. It was the best thing I’d ever seen. When it surfaced on UA-cam years later it meant so much to me to reconnect with that segment, and I would be embarrassed to find out how many times I have watched it. Now here it is 2021 and the whole world is talking about it, what a wild experience. It turns out these Norm segments meant a lot to so many! And the many yet to discover them.
It means a lot to me too. He was a brilliant man who brought us all a lot of joy.
That segment was how I found Norm. My friend and I downloaded it on Kazaa back in 2001
R.I.P. Norm
This is fking awesome. Of all the tributes coming out from comedians, this is the only one (the full podcast) that truly explores and articulates the amazing spirit that is Norm. You can really feel Conan’s love for him…it’s very special

2:45 Conan touching Frank’s hand followed by him putting the papers down reminds me of being in front of people with my mom when she subtly but unmistakably indicates to me that I have to stop doing something
I was looking for this comment to avoid double posting - good on ya lad! amazing how such a gentle and subtle gesture can still cause the thought "why am I so Goddamn dumb?....hands in your lap you spaz...F*CK!!!"
Nice catch and point. I went back and rewatched because of your comment ❤
I loved how Conan said giving a generous laugh to show support to his guests. But with Norm, Conan didnt need to.
That old chunk of coal is a diamond today. Thanks Norm
So right
Hanging with Billy Joe!!!!
That's nice :)
Well said. Rip
Dirt nap.
I've loved Norm for years and many of my friends never got his comedy - I tried to explain why he was so great and how his comedy works but you know, "a joke explained ceases to be funny". The craft of Norm was to troll and to push the boundaries without really caring whether the audience got his jokes or not. He wasn't an audience pleaser and as this interview mentioned, he took comedy very seriously. His whole "Amy Schumacher is the funniest comic alive" line which he often used on hapless interviewers is a perfect example of his type of comedy.
It's good, however, to hear that the way I "connected" with Norm, and how I thought he was as a human being, perfectly aligns with all the stories I've been hearing the past few days. He was a good guy who had a mischievous glint in his eyes that no-one can match, that's for sure.
That glint in his eye is so present, that I have seen it though the lense of the camera. It is literally caught on camera.
He always seemed respectful even though he wanted to go over lines that others were scared of going over. He always had such control over his own words.
This is the sweetest description of Norm I’ve ever heard, and it feels immensely genuine. It’s amazing to be able to remember Norm with a room full of best comedians and personalities out there. Thank you for this, team Coco!
Norm Macdonald always was my favorite Weekend Update anchor. Twinkle in his eye indeed. Screwed was my favorite movie of his, I needed to rewatch it for the first time in years-such an underappreciated movie! He was a true comedian
I remember seeing Screwed in theaters. It was a good one.
Dirty Work was even better.
@@hv3115 dirty work is one of my all time favorite movies. It is so damn good and underrated.
They knew him, appreciated him and were mystified by him. The word MISCHIEVOUS finally emerged at the end. Norm had a mischievous heart. Norm had heart.
Intelligence and heart.
He couldn’t stand to say goodbye to the ones he loved and cared for, he hoped to beat it.
Norm always seemed like he was saying things to amuse himself, and if it got a laugh from the audience then so be it. He's still one of my favorite Weekend Update hosts.
Hes by far the best
Thank you for digging up all the Norm clips! RIP Norm, you Legend!
Young comics these days don't hold a candle to the subtle brilliance of Norm Macdonald. Rest in peace buddy
No. They do hold candles. Its just that they're not lit.
That isn't entirely their fault. This younger generation is trained to censor themselves. Norm was trained to never censor himself, no matter what.
@@chanty2192 Very true

Rip norm may his soul Rest In Peace
4 years ago I got to see Norm absolutely bomb a standup set. When I went to a reddit page dedicated to him, I saw one person had genuine concern for his health, as I also had. Little did we know the cause was going to be this severe. I've seen him plenty of times when he was at his best, though, and will never want for any other celebrity recognition thanks to getting to shake his hand and hear him tell me I reminded him of Ed Norton. Rest in Peace Norm, you were one of a kind.
“He dry humped” touchstones 🤣thank you for recording this- exactly what I need
Carrot Top played the clip at his show in honor of Norm. Carrot top seems like a good guy. RIP Norm.
Carrot Top is not my brand of humor but I like that he always seems willing to laugh at himself, like on between two ferns. That's a classy gesture by him
I love norm. He was a typical, every day, Canadian! Rest in peace!
Andy: "You don't sense aggression from him, except when you get to like hypocrisy-or something that's like phoniness."
Norm: "That's the worst part".
I think the worst part was the raping
I think the hypocrisy would had been way down the list
One of greatest comedians to walk this earth. RIP Norm you'll be missed.
It was nice of Conan and the guys to do this. Norm was the best guest. I can’t stop watching Norm and Conan clips. 👍🏾
Thank you Conan, Andy and the producers of the Conan O'Brien show, you provided Norm with an outlet possibly more than any other show and now we benefit from all the archived footage. P.S. I liked you both and your show long before Norm passed away.
This was such a phenomenal episode. A part of me would’ve also loved to see an episode of Conan talking about Norm with Letterman as the guest.
I think here Letterman would’ve overshadowed Andy and Frank so it’s good he wasn’t there, but I feel like Letterman and Conan are two people who could talk about Norm together in a way that no one else would be able to.
Here ya go. Conan and Dave talking about Norm in Oct 2019. ua-cam.com/video/uqViyrKC9zg/v-deo.html
glad Andy is taking a break from DMing young women on twitter to reminisce about a man who constantly owned him
HAHAHHA
"Norm would not only touch them, he'd dry hump them" is probably one of the funniest (and truest) things Andy has ever said.
Thank you SO MUCH for this podcast……my heart is broken, and my eyes are full of tears as I write this. As hard as it was to listen to, I’m a little bit healed.
When I woke up to the news that our favorite chunk of coal had died, I immediately thought of the pain it must have caused Conan. In my sadness I really needed to hear Conan’s Norm stories to soothe the pain of losing him. These podcasts have been exactly that. Thank you lads
I'd love to see the one with his uncle Jean Luc telling the riddle to his wife in good quality. Come to think of it, I'd love to see all of them in best possible quality. Thank you Team COCO for putting up all these clips. We will miss Norm dearly.
That Norm look.....that smirk.....he was fearless because he KNEW what he found funny and that was enough for him, if noone else got it it was their loss....
I could list all of the amazing qualities Norm had, but I'd never finish.
Thank you for the amazing tributes to our precious Norm, Conan ! You have been killing it ! : )

Thanks so much for doing this Conan, Andy, and Frank. I’m such a big fan of Norm and it has always meant a lot to me to hear his peers speak highly of him. It’s comforting, makes me feel less crazy for adoring the man so much. There really was something so special about him that is irreplaceable. Thank you for recognizing his talent and giving him a platform to showcase it which allowed him to reach my eyes and ears. I’m truly grateful for the entire Norm experience, you included. Thank you.
hey conan i think it’s great for all the tribute and re-posts you have been giving norm. some celebrities have come out of the woodworks but throughout the you have always made it clear how dear he was to you. norm was very special to many of us. for the past 5yrs, every day i’d watch and rewatch clips of him on your show and other shows he was on. he brought light and laughter in life when i needed it and helped tons getting thru a rough time. he was grander than the stage and i’m thankful he was part of our lives.

Thank you Conan for all your interviews with Norm. Out of all of the talkshow-hosts, you were the one who understood and interviewed Norm the best. Thank you and Rest In Peace Norm!
With Norm it wasn't just about the punchline but how you got there that was fascinatingly funny.
The clips you've been putting out have been very healing. I love it, thanks.
I loved Norm's sense of humor so much.
Would really love you guys to release this full video. It's a great conversation in audio form, but this is even more special. Thanks for getting together to do this guys. RIP Norm.
Thank you Norm for all the laughs. I only discovered you when you were already gone, never knew I could miss I person I never knew this much.
Thanks for doing these norm shorts... you two were so great during his segments and some of my favorite bits to watch
And THANK YOU Conan for being so generous with your guests!!! I ALWAYS could feel this under the surface when you talked with young starlets who were uncomfortable in their first talk show experience and you ALWAYS made them feel at home and laughed at their uncomfortable stories or jokes 👍😌
But with Norm, you were like a kid going on a roller coaster ride and you had no no NO idea where Norm was taking you!! I love how you also turned your producer’s comment about Norm into a joke about Miller … shows once again your humble nature and your SHEER. CLASS…. You & Lettermsm are THE. BEST. LATE. NIGHT. TALK. SHOW. HOSTS. EVER!!! 😢👍❤️🇨🇦👏👏👏
Watching all of norms podcasts and clips of him on talk shows got me through some really tough times. First time I ever cried for a celebrity death. Gone too soon, the world's a bit darker with out ya. You will be missed dearly, norm. RIP
Conan is and has always been a great observer of talent. It’s an usual job to speak to the most interesting people in the world. A rare job anyone can have. and Norm was absolutely one of them. For him to constantly return to every one of Conan’s show says a lot while someone like Mark Maron griped about not being invited on Conan’s tonight show. I’m soooo glad this podcast exist because it’s a great space for Conan to not just make friends but to spot light his friends. I’m sad for Norm’s passing. And I loved that he never left the couch after his appearance and just hung around. And support Conan and Andy.
You can tell Conan got hit hard with this. Love you thank you for this ❤️ RIP Norm
