You're spot on! In 2016 he was more wide lines - though different aero different tarmac and different tyres. What he did it amazing. Nice comment and you have a good eye my friend

Martin that was fascinating to consider and an education in racing. So, if I understand you correctly Max sacrificed on a bit of speed and flow efficiency on entry to a turn to gain a higher overall delta (throttle rate application hence back up to speed quicker and with minimum wheel movements) on exit. That answers his being able to extend his Inters even with his earlier maneuvering in the field. When I looked at the track again in reference to turns 1 and 2 (then realizing how compressed they are in reference to 3 and 4) I realized that I would have been screwing up my drive simply looking for what one would believe is the most efficient racing line (but it really wasn't). Also I imagine what you were seeking to explain to us was that Max being off the racing line (the more rubbered in portion relatively in that weather) also afforded him greater car efficiency in that wet rubber tire on wet partially rubbered-in track is a more negative thing (slippery with water). A clearer portion of the track would afford you more grip in those condition giving you more control, reducing excess wheel movements, and keeping you away from the paint while also reducing the distance to the next turn. Really cool and demonstrates Max study of his race craft and tracks. Cheers!

Found you through Cameron, subbed. Question: if the rest of the field sees Max cruising by on the part of the track that's not rubbered in like they're standing still, why aren't they copying him? Note: Max is willing to give up time in one corner, by taking a alternative line, because he knows he's setting the car up to cross the racing line at the most sharp angle possible and will win that time back and some more. That's the anticipating part of his driving style in the wet. It's so well thought through.
Had seen your comment on another video, didn't come over immediately though. Thought it would be yet another opinion content disguised as analysis 😅 This was very nice. Technical but not ott, clean analysis, no baiting. Subscribed. Max has a feel for the car, circuit, race, everything. Adrian Newey called it extra processing power. Apparently only Alonso is similar. Maybe Hamilton. In a side by side analysis of Lewis and Max onboard of a race, both of them asked the same question at the same point in the race "How many more laps to go". The answer was three. It is probably too simple a data point but striking how the championship mind functions. It has to be more than what data can show. A feel that cannot be captured by a computer. Newey also said that unlike what people see or choose to see about Max, he is a deeply philosophical person, a thinker. The penalties he gets on track are perhaps part of his long game. It increasingly appears he is very much in control of his own race and perhaps that of Lando's as well. Norris needs more experience leading and winning, better guidance to deal with someone like Max. In the cooldown room, Max mentioned that Charles held him off for quite a bit, so that's the kind of headspace a competitor must have. No doubt about Max's expertise but at top levels, the mind plays a big part. That's what makes it interesting. Lando has the best car at the moment but not the mental capacity. If that is sorted, it will be a different game.
Thank you. Between your last 3 videos, I learned a lot. It would be nice to have a 4th on strategy. I think McClaren forgot who they were racing against (Max for championship or Russel for this race) when they pitted. Lando says they made the right decision but my view is that Russel would have stayed out, and it was a low probability strategy relative to 2024 championship. Max having to pass Russel and Lando and Ocon might have changed the outcome. Everyone needs to listen to your previous 2 videos to get the whole picture. Another on strategy would complete it.
Thanks, thats a good analysis. PW keeps talking about Max being a short corner driver is it just that or theres more to it. I feel Max is more adaptive driver than a particular style of driver. Can you do a analysis on this and maybe also compare with others with more historical data over the years and not just one particular season because each technical regulations has an effect on the way you drive.
After the season, please do an entire season analysis on where Lando needs to improve if he intends on challenging Max for a title next year and how he ultimately lost the title this year. Eg: His starts this year. How is he starting most times and why does his technique lead to a consistent loss in position. You could balance this video by, in it also, identifying areas in which Lando excels. E.g: his qualifying pace.
Hey Martin I have a question. I am sure you heard of Peter (Winsor) who always talks about short corners (e.g. Max, Charl, Lewis) vs long corner drivers with wide entrees (e.g. Carlos). I know everything is different kn the wets but I would like to see a video on this topic from you, backed with data to better understand what Peter means and how it translate to the track. Thanks!
If we didn't know Verstappen is a better race driver than Lando, we knew after Brazil race! Details and nuances in the driving like Max have is what basically all champions have. They find speed when and where everyone don't.
Max is in a league of his own. It's not the car (alone). It's the driver. What he did there was a drive for the ages. What I find fascinating is that everybody knows Max would look for grip outside the racing line. So you would think if everbody knows that "trick" everybody can do it. But they can't.
@@lowerlaptime I think mostly because of training and experience. Max comes from Belgium/Netherlands which is not far away from my home country Germany. We have a lot of cold and rainy days. Max went out on track in rain, cold temperatures and drove till he didn't feel his fingers anymore. He went through things that maybe nobody in the grid did and he developed a feeling for the car and for the limit which is outstanding. You can also see it in his iRacing Videos. It's just mindblowing how precise and clam he controls the car on the limit. Some say Jos is a bad father. But all Max ever wanted, is to be a Formula 1 driver, later a special wish to become THE best. And Jos said to him: Okay, if you want to be that, this is what you have to do. Was it too much? Maybe. Did it pay off? Very much.
Boy..........All the teams have these data,...look all the monitors in the pitbox and pitwall.......nothing secrets in this,I new this for ages........
Interesting analysis! I think it's quite ironic that in the media Max is often portrayed as a hot-head, one-dimensional driver, while how you put it, he is almost some kind of holistic intuitive yoga master that has so much mental capacity left over to oversee on the meta level what he is supposed to be doing. What do you think about Charles. As he is considered often an anticipatory driver as well, but in the wet he is not that outstanding (I remember an interview from a couple of years ago, that he was saying he wqas learning a lot of new ways to drive in the wet). Does it have to do with growing up in Southern Europe, not driving ever in the wet? (Which would be weird bc Pierre is from the same scene, and he seems to be great in the wet now too, although more a reactiuve driver with his dropping balls exercise before the race).
Thanks glad you liked my video! Erm Charles. Id say hes not as-anticipatory as Max. Some of Charles crashes take him by surprise. Where as Max would be like, "well ofc if you do this, and, this - then you should expect the car to do this" - does that make sense? Sorry
Don't forget he seemed to be the only driver at the aborted start that the drivers should have to wait for a green light. All his actions are calculated, even the penalized overtakes on Lando in Mexico. He makes drivers aware and afraid of his overtakes and defensive actions. And please don't believe everything the English media is writing. Hearing and seeing Max talking to other people, drivers, family and friends he is indeed a very friendly and level headed person.
Great content... everything I expected and maybe more. But the track dominance picture is very misleading. If lando is 1% faster on some parts but Max is 5% faster on other parts of the track, how does it relate to time gained/lost. I presume slow corners and a good exit mean more gains because the (bigger) delta and the time spent in a slow part of the track multiply into a lot of time gain.
@@W0o0dy yeah correct it doesn't show magnitude. Only direction. Ie who is quicker not how much So all the stuff i show at the start is the "how much" Does it make sense? Its not misleading, it's just, limited
@@lowerlaptimeok, maybe misleading is the wrong word... It does bait people into the wrong idea because the quantity of time gain is really all that matters in the end. I would love to see you relate controlling tyre temps (by making choices in specific turns?) to the long game of winning races.. Not sure if there is much data to help you with that.
When comparing telemetry, shouldn't you take into consideration that the track conditions will be vastly different across days or even laps within the race?
I chose similar lap time that also stack with my onboard theory. You gotta remember that they're driving with purpose. Well max is. So youll see this technique on pretty much every lap you look at!
Hi could you do an analysis on Russell? Compare him to Max, is George's driving style similar to Max's in the wet? I know that they have some similarities in the dry is it the same in the wet? Maybe compare him to Hamilton aswell to see why George was more comfortable and much quicker than hamilton even when Lewis is known as one of the best in the wet. It would be interesting since George pretty much had a flawless race when that hasn't always been the case in the wet, has he changed his driving style or is it that he has just gotten a lot better at not "overreaching" and wanting too much. Btw have you considered trying F1TV? It has onboards+radio from all the drivers from all sessions.
Great comment thanks! Umm - I'd bet everything to say Max has another level of understanding in the wet so I dare say George is not doing this - but i need to do the work to verify that assumption
@lowerlaptime Allright thank you! Well, a three-week break gives you plenty of time 😂. Btw your videos are fantastic, there is no one that goes into as much detail as you do, that also knows what they're talking about. Most just talk about stuff at such a surface level or they are just flat out wrong. Thank you!
So in this comparison you didn’t take Max’s final fastest lap in the race, as that one was THREE seconds faster. So even though it was a wet race, the fastest race lap was much faster than the fastest qualifying lap! So the telemetry and track dominance of the actual fastest lap would look completely different.
RE Telemetry: It was much drier for Max's best lap vs Lando's pole lap. I show 2 "more comparable" laps therefore. RE onboards: I show as you say - Max's fastest Vs Landos pole
Keeping the steering wheel straight on the exit is more important in rain than ever. But this answer is so obvious, that I’m wondering, why nobody else was doing it? I feel we are still missing something.
Millions of Dutch children go to school on their bicycles every day. No matter if rain or heatwave. Some go up to 10 miles one way. Every schoolday. I know. I was one of then long ago. The rain and cold; you get used to it quickly. Ps. We did not have helmets 😂
maybe he watched some old videos of other drivers who have done the same thing, years ago ? Hill, Clark, Senna, Stuart, Schuie, Alonso and maybe even Olivier Panis in Monaco ? The list goes on. Max was just THE LATEST one to achieve it.
Data all good and well ""One has not been in the NL really if one has not experienced a 4 seasons a day, day"". Tough love works to not get complacent or lazy. Jos did well, and Max is tough as nails by the good old-school Dutch parenting he got. Data bléh..... ;)
@@lowerlaptime It looks as though they both start with 50% throttle and a lift which I’m guessing is to help rotate the car and both get a speed plateau when they lift. Then both get back on the throttle with Max applying it more aggressively - he lifts again but doesn’t lose velocity so maybe much of that throttle is without traction (?). Lando has to lift later and does, again, plateau. What is more interesting though is that Max brakes earlier and carries less speed in (maybe because of his wet line) but is faster out. I watched your video because I was racing on the Silverstone GP circuit a couple of weeks back. It was a damp track with increasing rain - the heavier the rain got, the quicker I was relative to my competitors. Looking at my video, I think I was doing some of what Max is doing - braking earlier and more smoothly and getting back onto the throttle much earlier
Less time in the car and more doing these comparisons for next year please the greatest year for racing team mate match-ups ever: Hammer Leclerc, Albon Sainz, Piastri Norris, Russell Antonelli, Max Super Max
You learn that when you are karting in the rain and snow when you are young. So it is nothing new avoiding the rubber in the rain. The rain cannot o through the rubber. Asphalt is designed to drain the water.

Note: Max is willing to give up time in one corner, by taking a alternative line, because he knows he's setting the car up to cross the racing line at the most sharp angle possible and will win that time back and some more. That's the anticipating part of his driving style in the wet. It's so well thought through.
Correct. Im not sure why drivers don't copy more sorry 🤦
Great channel thank you
Thanks for watching!
Had seen your comment on another video, didn't come over immediately though. Thought it would be yet another opinion content disguised as analysis 😅
This was very nice.
You're right, it's so much more than just the car. Welcome!
Thanks heaps!I'll keep that in mind for future videos!
Thanks !
Check out my video on this and come back to me - ua-cam.com/video/aK11P1BRkRI/v-deo.htmlsi=r3pPrgn8-l7R7r3v
Great commentary ! Subscribed. I wonder if it s possible to get braking telemetry... would be so interesting...
Yeah would be great i think the teams protect this to be honest
Very good video, sub earned!
Awesome, thank you! 😀
@@guysambo4232 he can pay me for this surely? 😅
Love your videos! Subbed
Thanks.
Excellent
Thank you!
Did you like it!
Good analysis. Could you also analyse both Alpines too?
Hey Martin I have a question. I am sure you heard of Peter (Winsor) who always talks about short corners (e.g. Max, Charl, Lewis) vs long corner drivers with wide entrees (e.g. Carlos). I know everything is different kn the wets but I would like to see a video on this topic from you, backed with data to better understand what Peter means and how it translate to the track. Thanks!
Legend great question - seek and you will find: ua-cam.com/video/aK11P1BRkRI/v-deo.htmlsi=1mEBijrJDHcKQ1Vm
Learned a lot! What do you mean exactly with finding ’the rubber’? And when you’re on or off it?
@@BeeTB1 the rubbered in track surface that gets formed during dry running ,& becomes terribly slippery when wet!
@ thanks!
Good Drag Reduction Haircut
haha was about time. Got a few subs now so might as well put some effort in
Brilliant.
Thanks!
Thanks, Great analize , But now they all now how to do it!!!!
haha ... should be ok ..
Absolute lemon 🍋
If we didn't know Verstappen is a better race driver than Lando, we knew after Brazil race!
Details and nuances in the driving like Max have is what basically all champions have. They find speed when and where everyone don't.
Is the telemetry published somewhere?
So if we have a wet race again next year, can other drivers replicate Max’s performance by just following his line?
They didn't in 16 & now! Guess not
That was an amazing race. Make all cars "equal" and see who the best drivers ar.
Im down! At least closer. Its so much more interesting
martin para buscar grip you have to be away from the normal racing dry line? rubber in dry line becomes slippery in wet?
Si cierto!! Claro!
Max is in a league of his own. It's not the car (alone). It's the driver.
What he did there was a drive for the ages.
What I find fascinating is that everybody knows Max would look for grip outside the racing line. So you would think if everbody knows that "trick" everybody can do it. But they can't.
I find this amazing too. Why do you think this is
@@lowerlaptime I think mostly because of training and experience.
Very much.
Max talked about this in the press conference( or maybe cold down room) with Ocon and Pierre. They said it was about practicing karting in the rain.
5:47.. that's the real difference
U didnt add where lando was losing much time , by veering off the track😂😂😂.
U are leaking Max trade secret here .
Good job
haha lol!
And I know! I'm revealing too much! Should I reign it in, or keep going?
Very Schumacher like Max was
Great content... everything I expected and maybe more.
Ie who is quicker not how much
So all the stuff i show at the start is the "how much"
Does it make sense?
Comment to help the algorithm.
Aw legend
Remember is not talent is luck.😅
Thank you!
Next rain race… pretty sure the talented/smart drivers will be taking the Max lines 😂
@@hh-jy1ld max was doing this in 2016 tho!
🐐
😀🤛
New haircut 😀
😁
Me too!
"See, I told you forcing you to practice while freezing in the rain was worth it." - Jos Verstappen, probably.
yup how effed up it seems and is.. it worked.
has worked with a lot of tennisplayers and turners and musicians as well..
Millions of Dutch children go to school on their bicycles every day. No matter if rain or heatwave. Some go up to 10 miles one way. Every schoolday.
I know. I was one of then long ago. The rain and cold; you get used to it quickly.
Ps. We did not have helmets 😂
Tires or Tyres?
Lando will watch this video to the end and say : yup, nothing wrong with How I drove, he's just lucky 😊
legit..
Please compare Max and Checo for this race or any other.
I suspect checo loosing time in turn 1 to turn 12 in all areas
@@lowerlaptime That about covers it.
@@talk2thoran lol
Special tyres, only he had them
Pirelli test tyres for heavy rain 😂
maybe he watched some old videos of other drivers who have done the same thing, years ago ? Hill, Clark, Senna, Stuart, Schuie, Alonso and maybe even Olivier Panis in Monaco ?
The list goes on. Max was just THE LATEST one to achieve it.
@@Philip-x3d i think he knows and backs himself but you're right he could have!
Data all good and well ""One has not been in the NL really if one has not experienced a 4 seasons a day, day"". Tough love works to not get complacent or lazy. Jos did well, and Max is tough as nails by the good old-school Dutch parenting he got. Data bléh..... ;)
4:51 it looks like Max gets out of the throttle in the same bend before Lando does
He does, but, hes also getting to full throttle first ☝️- its a good shout. He generally got more throttle down than Lando
When you use brains & adapt v.s. just racing and fighting the car....... And Lando does not learn because he just does it away as luck
Less time in the car and more doing these comparisons for next year please the greatest year for racing team mate match-ups ever:
Hammer Leclerc, Albon Sainz, Piastri Norris, Russell Antonelli, Max Super Max
I bet Max was up all night sim racing the night before...😂
Lol
How? Because I'm Dutch 😂
according FIA rain is now illegal....
You learn that when you are karting in the rain and snow when you are young. So it is nothing new avoiding the rubber in the rain. The rain cannot o through the rubber. Asphalt is designed to drain the water.
Yes though differences in extents and not kinds. Ie max is LEVERAGING this, hard!
....how...he practiced since when most people are still in a tricycle that's how
😅👌
Max's talent was lucky
Why would a comparison on such different conditions make sense in the first place
I explained this.
Explanation: You can see the INTENT, the PURPOSE, what they're trying to ACHIEVE. Look closer :) Hope it helps
Because he is Dutch :p
How? Because his dad - the person everyone sees as a demon - taught Max how to.
Hah guess so
So fast he was stuck behind Yuki....
Max?
Its all the new magic engine. Can’t have the fastest drive without the fastest car. Simple.
Play Sims online and you will find out, its mechanics are so sharp and harder than real F1, you will learn how to drive in the rain.
I agree
