the thing about collies being protective of children is very true. my grandparents had one, and when I was baby and I was sleeping, he'd sleep outside my door and get not aggressive but defensive over anyone that tried to come in, also he'd let me sleep on him and he'd protect me while I was sleeping. he did the same for my cousins. and he was also incredibly intelligent
Lol... no. I love them but they shed a lot. I have 4 of them and If I were to brush them every day I would go mad. A couple of times per month is enough, if your not taking them to an exibition. And one of them really likes the rain( I think she has border collie blood), just imagine all of the mud. Sometimes I dont clean her right away and let the other dogs laugh at her. But she's shameless *sigh*
Blagoje Petrovic Their fur is easier when you keep up with it everyday. I brush my collie everyday and I don't have any problem with her playing in the mud at the dog park or her going potty in the rain.
I know right!??! I just love brushing the family I live with's collie, Lily. Lily doesn't like being brushed but she lets me because she knows if she's good while being brushed she gets a treat.

Max was my first dog and right now he is 10, what's funny is on his papers we have the same birthday. I'm in highschool right now and when I eventually lose him idk what I will do. I love my buddy
As a child, growing up in the Netherlands, me and my dad used to watch Lassie on TV. I remembered how badly I wanted one of those dogs. To this day, I can't wait until I have the time and space to own one of these beauties.
I've never had a collie, but my dad did, and he always holds them in very high regard, especially since the collie protected his wife from an invader once.

Love Collies! I have an 11 year old Collie, Cody, (Sable Mahogney) and I lost a 13 year Collie (Sable) that I grew up with Lacey a few years ago. The best dogs ever!!!
We had a Collie/Rottweiler crossbreed. The faithfull, loving and loyal companion of my teenage years. The devoted servant and best friend of my father. The protector of my mother and little brother. The highly conscientious guardian of our house and home. Highly trainable and very obedient. RIP ''Spits'' (1974-1988) Best dog in the world!
My rough collie was 2 years old when I was born. She apparently was extremely protective of me and would herd me places as soon as I could walk. She was the sweetest dog ever and passed when I was 12. Although I must say, she wasn’t the brightest but she was so incredibly sweet. She lived until she was 14, I still miss her
My grandparents had a German Shepherd/Collie mix named Ninji. I loved to sit down with her and brush her, she helped me get over my fear of dogs! Sadly she was very old and blind and weak, so I didn't get to spend that much time with her. :(
+Weirdanimalboy I know how you feel I've three dogs die the first was a short haired collie Barny, a shitzu mix Timmy, and a shitzu mix Kasey. I havn't had Timmy in two years. Sadly he was hit by a car:( Iv'e had very many tragic accidents with animals like Barney, he was strangled by his chain tie up. He wrapped it around a pole. I do not know the full story because I was little then. And Kasey was hit by a car as well! D: We lived on an 80 speed limit and it started right there darn you ole veihcles! But now we have moved out in the country where there are few cars and we are going to be getting a fence to get a female rough haired collie who is pregnant! :D
Agreed. I just had a Collie into the grooming salon I work at, and while he had some matting, he wasn't horrible. Besides, it's coat blow time, so the shedding picks up, and it they're not brushed, it can cause mats. I have a Great Pyrenees, and I find that he's not too big of a shedder, but come coat blow time (ie right now), the house is full of fine, white undercoat hair.
I have a collie and a sheltie. They are both so wonderful and loving. I feel blessed to have them in my life. They are fiercely loyal and extremely intelligent. If they are regularly brushed, they will maintain beautiful coats! Everywhere we go, people can't help but stop to admire them! Lord willing, I will always have an amazing Collie.
OMG! I love Australian shepherds, don’t get me wrong, but they just won’t fit my lifestyle. They are BEAUTIFUL. I’ve been searching for a breed of dog I’d like and I was watching a video on Kamari Noel doing a ten minute photo challenge when this gorgeous collie showed up and they took a picture with it. From the overall examination, this dog seems to fit my lifestyle and I can provide its needs!
Love Collies! Mine is now 11 years old, being a real senior by now, but still know how to guard the house (yes by barking A LOT!) Such relaxed dogs and very smart and easy to train. Would be hard to have any other breed.
+Sharon .MB I had 2 collies. One is a pure bred, and he is 5 years old now, and the other was a dark blue mural, and she was beautiful! She barked a lot. Well, she tried to bark. She was a rescue dog, and the previous owners had her vocal cords taken out! ( I'm guessing it was because she used to bark a lot, but still WHY???) She was about 15 when we had to have her put down in June, 2015. :( But all of my family on my dad's side has had collies! I love them! They are the best dog, loyal, gentle, easy to train, smart and beautiful creatures!! ( Often my white collie, McSteamy is his name, attracts lots of attention at the dog park '' Is your dog a show dog?'' ) :)
One of my earliest memories is my grandma's roughie sticking his nose thru my crib to check on me every night. I'd hear his clickety claws and sniffeys and always felt safe.
As for other grooming, just a little combing behind the ears every so often to prevent matting and I wash him once a year (in spring because it helps to get rid of the wintercoat faster). Collies are some of the easiest dogs to keep, I really don't get how they come up with this intensive grooming bit. Shorthair breeds may require less grooming, but you spend that time picking those short hairs out of your clothes (short hairs go through, long hairs stick on top and can be more easily removed)
Damn - so many cool dog breeds. Collies, Belgian Malinois, German Shepherds, Border Collies, and Australian Shepherds to me are five of the most beautiful dogs. Bernese Mountain Dogs are cool. Then of course you got Bearded Collies, Corgies, Old English Sheepdogs, Westies, Beagles, Dachshunds, Poodles, Basset Hounds, Labs, and Golden Retrievers. Decisions, decisions. At some point in time I want to get a dog or two or three but the most difficult thing for me is picking. I love all dogs (not too keen on Rottweilers, Dobermans - at least with their ears cropped, I like them much better when they're floppy, Chihuahuas, and teacup Yorkies). Our old neighbor had a teacup Yorkie and even though he was cute he was too yappy for my taste. So it's going to be tough choosing. Plus I love cats too. Wish I could own and take care of 50 or more :) Dogs and cats are like cheese puffs - you can't resist them and you just can't have one.
I think the only thing I would of changed on this info video, was about the shedding, yes Collies shed but not as bad as people think, at least not when the collie is on a good diet, males shed once a year normally around their birthdays, females twice a year around their heat cycles, they don't shed like other breeds, I have fostered many breeds of dogs including Golden Retrievers, St. Bernards and so on! and the Goldens shed way .. WAY!... way more than a collie does. I think they should info people how they shed, because the general public might like they going to come home one day to find a whole other dog in the amount of coat one might shed, and its not like that with collies Especially if the collie gets a brushing even only once a month!
What's your recommended grooming schedule for a rough collie? I've heard a light brushing a few times a week, plus one long, thorough brushing once a week. How about bathing and groomer visits? Do they need to be trimmed pretty often, in your experience? I'm hoping within the next couple of years I can get a collie. I just adore them!
superchubbles I recommend brushing them as puppies although they wont need it for grooming but for learning that brushing is good. I recommend brushing lightly at least once a week, and a full line brushing once a month or twice a month. if your grooming during their shed season then brushing them lightly daily followed by full line brushing once a week. Females shed twice a year and Males once a year. I never trim but that is because I show mine but you can ask a groomer for a trim but that means shaving them down, and I do not recommend that. there long coat actually protects them from the heat and sun because the top layer of outer coat is the one getting hit by the rays of the sun. but the under lining coat it cooler and protects the skin from sunburn. Learning to do line brushing is the best grooming advice I can tell you because that will fully brush them out if done correctly. But I will ad that I take the comb and brush out behind ears and elbows once a week to prevent matting. and I line brush the pants or skirt of a dog twice a month.
Thank you for replying so quickly! Sounds like their coats are easier to care for than I thought, which is awesome. I've been doing plenty of my own research, but it's great to hear from someone with lots of collie experience. I want to do therapy training with my dog, so I definitely want to start with a puppy and get him used to grooming and all kinds of handling from an early, early age. The grooming was one of my biggest concerns, since I've never had a dog with a higher maintenance coat before. But it is sounding more and more doable. :)
Glad I could help, and I wish you best of luck with your future collie, and Welcome to the collie family! :) Join our facebook group Rough Collies! we do a lot of breed talk on there and we all share photos and more.
Question!! Can you give more info about there health? I know collie nose and some eye problems and also what else? Are they prone to bloat? That's the thing I'm scared of the most >.< . What' age should should be appropriate for a collie's nose to be tattooed? In my country it's reaaaaally cold and reaaaally hot in the summer.
I had a rough coat female collie when I was younger. Her name was Babe. She looked just like lassie. She was wicked smart! My mom told me a story of how babe saved my life when I was just a toddler. She lived to be 19. She passed away while watching fireworks on July 4th in my grandmas backyard. I will always miss her. I'm 38 now and I'll never forget her! My dream is to have another collie. They're wonderful companions. Till we meet again Babe!! I love u!
I have 2 full sized Collies they are both really smart and learn fast. I am teaching my younger dog how to count he is pretty darn good at it to. They are amazing animals.
Boy Scout of the Dog World, eh? They've never met my Aslan. 😂 he is exceedingly naughty. He lives to be bad lol. We love him dearly though and we've had several collies in my family. When I was born we had a tri-color female and I learned to walk at 8 months old by holding on to that frizzy white mane. ❤
My ex babysitter had one of these dogs. Coincidentally he was named Lassie, but her daughters often nicknamed him "Laddie" and "Pipsqueak" because of his barking. He was a fairly well behaved dog and was allowed in the front yard unlike his dalmatian sister. He was also like a grumpy old man at times meaning that if he's sleeping, don't pet him or he'll bite. Unfortunately he had to be euthanized because of diabetes.
i own 4 of these lovely fluff balls and i woulden't trade them for any other breed, they are fantastic, loving dogs, really love anyone and every thing
my dads got a greyhound cross with one of these, thin body with a fluffy tail and a slightly wider nose and a cream colour. lovely dog and wouldn't hurt a fly.
Now I'm thinking about buying/adopting Collie. I have big yard, forest near by, big open space and there is always someone in house so dog would never be alone for longer than few minutes. I have plenty of time so I would have no problem with grooming one once a day. This may be perfect dog for me :)
My collie is a white collie with a tan face and a tan spot right above his tail. His ears were taped down by the breeder, but his sister kept pulling the tape out, so one of his ears is folded down, and the other is pricked. I think it makes him look 10 times cuter!
I think smooth collies are much better than the rough type. I find them much more appealing :) can't wait for when I move out of home so I can finally get a smooth.
Re rough collie grooming: It's pretty easy IF you have an intact dog, and even if your dog is not intact, you have a high-velocity dog dryer and a good spray hose, preferably with a reservoir for shampoo. A reasonably correct intact collie coat sheds dirt and doesn't tangle readily. Spaying or neutering, especially if done early, turns the coat soft and easily matted and tangled. A nice thing about rough collies, though, is that they do NOT smell doggy. Even if seldom bathed, but groomed out occasionally, the dirt and dander shed twice a year with the old coat, so the coat stays quite clean -- unless your dog likes to wade in muck and mire. :) Even then hosing the dog down thoroughly will pretty much counter the results of that behavior.
I could care less about shedding 😂😂😂 I wear my dogs fur like a second piece of clothing 🤣🤣🤣. I can’t wait to have my own collie it’ll be useful when I have goats and chickens ❤❤❤❤
I don't mind shedding as long as it is a long coat breed. I grew up with beagles and that hair weaves itself into thing. The long-haired mutt we had always shed it clumps so it was very easy to clean.
I find it so strange that almost nobody talks about how independent minded this breed is. It may depend on the lines but my female Collie is incredibly stubborn and will use her intelligence to get into trouble often lol. They are good dogs but they don't listen to your every word like a border or retriever.
Are collies more difficult to own than most of the other dog breeds? I've done research on lots of breeds, but i keep coming back to the collie. They seem like wonderful family members.
Just one addition.. There is a genetic deficiency in collies and several related breeds that makes many of them very vulnerable to permanent and even lethal harm from some commonly used vet meds, such as ACE, a common pre-anesthetic. This is now a pretty well studied issue. More information can be had from Washington State University. Before getting ANY surgery or drugs for any reason it is vital to talk to your vet about this, and either avoid the known problematic drugs (several) or get the dog tested first (available via WSU).
Since I was a child, growing up watching Lassie, I had planned to get a Collie when I had a place of my own. But that massive thick under coat has kept me from doing it. The original Lassie did NOT have that much fur. Collies of old, did not have the coat of fur the modern Collies have. I live in TN and our summers are sweltering with heat and humidity. I just think our summers would be brutal for the modern Collie coat. I also live on several acres of land with all kinds of brush to get stuck in that coat. But should I ever come across a Collie like the Collies in the past, I just might get one. For now, I have Australian Shepherds. Which is how I know what dealing with long fluffy coats are like. But my dogs have nothing like the coat of a rough collie. Although my young one comes pretty close.
Exactly, the guy that says that OBVIOUSLY does not have a rough collie. If you brush them all the time they will look horrible because you will brush out all of the undercoat. I brush mine only when it's hot and he's shedding a lot, but only because it cuts down on hair laying around and loose clumps hanging from him. When he gets dirty, it just dries and falls off him and he looks fine again. As for the shedding, this hair is easily vacuumed, it doesn't go through your clothes like short hair.
My dog have nothing against mud and so on, but she always manage to look clean anyways and I grom her 1 times per week, and sometimes more often. My dog doesn't constantly shed either :)
The thing about the ears is just the weird breeders thing, in reality they have straight ears & rarely curl tipped ears, the breeders glue their ears when they are puppies & it causes the ears to fold for when they grow older.
They mention the decision making ability. Imagine the raptors in Jurassic park-- the one's who figured out how to open doors. Latches, door handles, switches...
I live in australia and i have a collie i feel sorry for him because so hot. And my dog is very protective over me, when a man walks by he starts growing and barking! He's the best i love him
the thing about collies being protective of children is very true. my grandparents had one, and when I was baby and I was sleeping, he'd sleep outside my door and get not aggressive but defensive over anyone that tried to come in, also he'd let me sleep on him and he'd protect me while I was sleeping. he did the same for my cousins. and he was also incredibly intelligent

When I was a kid I used to have a blue marl collie named kipper. Best dog ever. I really miss him.
You named your dog Aslan but he's naughty? lol!
@@saphiriathebluedragonknight375 Just how naughty
My ex babysitter had one of these dogs. Coincidentally he was named Lassie, but her daughters often nicknamed him "Laddie" and "Pipsqueak" because of his barking. He was a fairly well behaved dog and was allowed in the front yard unlike his dalmatian sister. He was also like a grumpy old man at times meaning that if he's sleeping, don't pet him or he'll bite. Unfortunately he had to be euthanized because of diabetes.
i remember i was with my friend and my collie started barking at this person who talked to us. it is true that these dogs are protective
I love these guys. I actually love brushing dogs
That collie herding duck was so cute
rough and smooth collie are pretty their colors are pretty too like the rough and smooth collie colors like sable . tri color. white. and blue merle
i own 4 of these lovely fluff balls and i woulden't trade them for any other breed, they are fantastic, loving dogs, really love anyone and every thing
lassie will always be my hero
my dads got a greyhound cross with one of these, thin body with a fluffy tail and a slightly wider nose and a cream colour. lovely dog and wouldn't hurt a fly.
Now I'm thinking about buying/adopting Collie.
I have big yard, forest near by, big open space and there is always someone in house so dog would never be alone for longer than few minutes.
I have plenty of time so I would have no problem with grooming one once a day.
This may be perfect dog for me :)
Polish Pole good luck!
the rough and smooth collie can be good guard dog to children"s
They are so cut and I like the colors on them like sable. Tri color. White. And blue merle
I think the collie are so good guarding children
I LOVE COLLIES !!!
This lovely dog is on my list since I was 4 year old !
a Collie and a Retriever . what else are there to ask for ?
My collie is a white collie with a tan face and a tan spot right above his tail. His ears were taped down by the breeder, but his sister kept pulling the tape out, so one of his ears is folded down, and the other is pricked. I think it makes him look 10 times cuter!
It does sound cute 😖😉
they are the most beautiful dogs
my aunt sable rough collie passed away on spring break on March 2015 she has health problems she was old and I love her
That is a pretty cute collie and shatland sheepdog
This is my dream dog -3 I want the same training lassie got!! I will name her lassie also they are just took cute and fluffy
i love collies!!! i have a collie and she is so cute
Amazing dogs! I have a collie puppy too. Cookie's just turning 2 months and I love her so much.. 🍪😍

i love my collie and sheltie.
my collie has only one folded ear. its been like that since I got her as a puppy. now she's almost 12.
If I was gonna get a collie, I'd go for the smooth coat, a neighbor of mine had one but I never got to know him though
Collie are so sweet
0:04 what’s with the wolf whistle
I could care less about shedding 😂😂😂 I wear my dogs fur like a second piece of clothing 🤣🤣🤣. I can’t wait to have my own collie it’ll be useful when I have goats and chickens ❤❤❤❤
I don't mind shedding as long as it is a long coat breed. I grew up with beagles and that hair weaves itself into thing. The long-haired mutt we had always shed it clumps so it was very easy to clean.
I have one. He so nice!! I love!
They seem like wonderful family members.
i want every dog i see......
Stunning dog and they are beyond sweet candy drops of a dog but God damn they are clingy
I feel like I am the only one who wants to have a dog that is not easy to groom because I fucking love brushing
id give anything to have a collie as good as my first dog was
Just one addition..
I'd like to have a sable collie.
I was gonna get a collie but there wasn't enough space for my car or some stupid thing so now I got a sheltie and Aussie but they are both great
LASSIE!!!!!!
Lovely dog
I agree
I LOVE these videos
The thing about the ears is just the weird breeders thing, in reality they have straight ears & rarely curl tipped ears, the breeders glue their ears when they are puppies & it causes the ears to fold for when they grow older.
Is the shedding that bad?
Fun fact: Lassie was actually played by a male dog named Pal.
before I watched the show I always thought Lassie was a boy
They mention the decision making ability. Imagine the raptors in Jurassic park-- the one's who figured out how to open doors. Latches, door handles, switches...
I WISHD ID HAD DOG LIKE THAT
I live in australia and i have a collie i feel sorry for him because so hot. And my dog is very protective over me, when a man walks by he starts growing and barking! He's the best i love him
