we had a pug for over a dozen years. i never had a dog that was so in tuned with our emotions. you had a bad day, he knew. you wanted to play, he'll launch into play. but the compacted spine did lead to walking and bladder issues in his late years. he is still missed.

My family bought a fawn color pup, we walked him twice a day most days, took care of him and Remington lived to the age of 16 1/2, he died two years ago and there’s not a day I don’t think about him.

My pug is a very warm-hearted, friendly dog. When she meets a person, it will take about 5 minutes to get used to them. She has never bit anyone in her entire life, but we can't teach her any tricks other than "sit". I give this dog a 10/10.

***** Not exactly, pugs have problems with their breathing but its manageable. Whereas other dogs suffer from heart disease, hip dysplasia, and back problems. Those problems will kill your dog and is the end of a lot of bigger dogs, pugs don't have much in their way from living long lives.

I just got a pug a month ago in June. His breathing is fine and it has been so hot here in Pittsburgh this summer. I don't keep him outside very long. He does start to pant very hard only after a few minutes. Just be wise and know what to do! They are great companion dogs too. He gets right up in my lap and sits there so proudly. I love him so much. A great dog for the family!

THANK YOU for seeing through the veil of supposed "cuteness" we have somehow indoctrinated into our culture, as is even more evident to me than ever before watching this video. at least the people giving the commentary were not credentialed in any form where i would expect one to know better than to fully condone this type of dog's sheer existence. this is not meant to be inflammatory to the bazillion people who will watch this because (duh) they love pugs. if anything, just consider the cost in quality of life your best friend will have to pay because you wanted an animal that had a particular "cute" physical trait. really. just think about what that means. i also give credit to AP for at least mentioning a good amount of the major health issues that come with owning a pug, however they left me with an...uncomfortable(?) feeling with the light-hearted, comical (quick cut shot to the pug's face looking surprised!), responses given after each health concern was mentioned. & in the summary of the pug as a whole, i was left with the impression that somehow genetically allowing the contortion of a dog's spine to form an ideal "two FULL curls", or that "some breathing problems" because the dog HAS NO MUZZLE WHATSOEVER were alright (assuming one doesn't "squeeze too hard while petting"). i am sorry to anyone who disagrees. i am sorry for the dogs.

Pugs are one of the most loving dogs ever, great with kids. They just love their people and do not get very attached with just one person, they learn to love the whole family. Happy pug mom for 12 years! And if you walk them on a harness, feed them right and take them to their regulat vet checkups, they are one of the healthiest breeds. Only downside is the shedding but they dont cause any allergies so we are good!

How we suffered a bankruptcy and moved from farm to town in our apartment, the best acquisition was the Bandit, a unique and spectacular Pug...
As a dog says he wins all the others we've had, he is smart, loving, and companion!!!
Dogs are the unique and real friend of man!!!

She doesn’t seem to have the breathing issues a lot of pugs suffer with , occasionally you can hear her breathing but most of the time she breathes comfortably and barely even snores . She’s also really energetic and athletic , it’s such a shame that so many owners allow their pugs to get overweight because mine is so happy and fit and has the best temperament

They failed to mention the reason pugs eyes bulge out is because humans have bred them so small that their skulls are too small for their brains so their brains are literally pushing their eyes out of their heads. i’ve owned pugs my whole life (my pug puppy is literally laying down on me as i’m typing this) and they’re super sweet dogs! they help a lot with therapy, are playful and cute, etc. it’s unfortunate that breeders hurt pugs so much (yes, you can thank bad breeding for that) but my pugs have vet checkups at least twice a year just to make sure they’re doing okay. they’re very happy dogs and you shouldn’t be scared of getting one as long as you have a good amount of money! its possible to make them live a long, happy life (their life spans are well over 10 years) if you know what you’re doing!

I always wanted a pug growing up ever since the first time I laid eyes on our neighbors pug. My parents weren’t spending several hundred dollars on a family dog so I never got one. When me and my wife finally moved into our house we had promised the kid we would get a dog and he wanted a pug much to my surprise. We found an older rescue pug and fell in love with him from day one. His personality and his quirks made me smile no matter how shitty I was feeling and every minute I was home he had to be by my side. As he got older and moving up and down the stairs became too tough I had to carry him with me or he would bark and Yelp, even if I just ran downstairs to grab a drink or something. We have 6 other pets, 5 cats and another dog, and we were all just occupying Frankys world. He definitely ran the show. He passed away a few months ago. He had a rough life until we got ahold of him, animal control pulled him from his first home because of mistreatment. We only had a few years with him and I’m glad we got to spend that time spoiling the fuck out of him. He definitely earned it. We are getting a pug puppy at the end of July, we met him yesterday but he won’t be old enough to take home for another few weeks. I hope he’s at least half as good a dog as Franky.

There are a lot of silly comments on here, and as a Pug breeder for going on 40 years, I feel like I need to address them,
Pugs, like all dogs, can have health issues. The whole Eye-popping thing though is not entirely true. they do not just "Pop" out for no good reason, and would take considerable force or a unique birth defect/genetic trait to do so. Most breeders would work overly large eyes out of their blood line fast, if not never have the problem to begin with. The most dangerous thing for a pug's eyes is actually it's fifth claw or Du-claw. if it is not removed shortly after birth, it will remain and can cause severe eye damage later in life via accidental scratches.
Breathing issues again actually fall into birth defect zone. A properly bred line will NOT suffer from issues that would EVER require surgery. They of course do not handle high heat well, but should never be exposed to it for long periods anyway. They are hose pets, not outside dogs.
As for another user that posted about Hygiene and yeast infections, it's the food and treats you are feeding. Over the past 40 years, we have learned a lot about pugs and how touchy their diets are. Too much sugar and fatty foods/low quality kibble can easily cause them to get yeast infections very frequently as crystals will form rapidly.
Pugs are wonderful family pets, and truly do not take any extra care or attention to maintain. The wrinkles are easily cleaned with a wash rag when you give the a bath. No real extra work required. If you want to keep them dry, Baking soda is the best bet. A bit of baking soda on a dry rag, and rub it in the wrinkle. it will help keep it dry and germ free, and wont hurt the dog. (Re-enact Scarface if you must =p )
I hope a few comments from people with less experience owning pugs, does not affect the odds of you making your own personal experiences with the little charmers. =)

We were both horrified they were intentionally bred to not be able to breath, have their eyeballs pop out and be susceptible to heat stroke and a slew of other health issues so they would look "cute" for humans. Horrifying. smh

    • @clevernickname8095

I have two male pugs both from rescues. One of them, Baby, (he was called Baby Huey but we just abbreviated it) has a mushed in face like the ones you see here and the other, Sammy, has more of a snout. If you go to a rescue like I did you can find one with more of a snout or maybe even a mix. If you want a puppy or can't find a pug rescue, then be VERY careful which breeder you pick. Of coarse, that goes with any dog, but especially with pugs. Make sure the breeder is certified and experienced, has the breeding dogs in good condition, clean breeding area, and the puppies are up to date on shots and anything medical. That makes the health problems minimum. The wrinkles aren't much to handle. As long as you clean them every couple of days, don't go on any extreme walks and bring a collapsible bowl with water when you go for a longer walk (or in the summer. Never go on any huge walks during the summer and make sure to bring plenty of water) they shouldn't get heat stroke. As for the eye thing, don't worry about it at all. Make sure to get a harness instead of a collar and don't pull the wrinkles too much will cleaning. Dogs aren't plushies, so don't squeeze them like they are one. If you catch you or someone else doing so, stop them immediately. This doesn't mean you can't hug them, but I read an article saying dogs are uncomfortable in hugs. If toy want to hug that adorable little face, make sure it's not too tight or long. A pug should win the heart of any 7 year old. They are the greatest companions in the world. I hope this somewhat helped and made things a bit less horrifying for you and your daughter :)

Don't get me wrong, pugs certainly are cute and wonderful companions, and all living pugs deserve a happy life with people who can take care of them! But they really need to stop being bred so that they're so prone to so many health issues and a just plain difficult life. It's honestly disgusting that people breed them to be possibly the most unhealthy dog breed of all, just because they think it's cute. It's so, so cruel. I really hope people stop contributing to the inbreeding and purposeful breeding of unhealthy traits into these sweet little dogs, they're just going to be miserable all their life. Adopting pugs from shelters instead of buying from a breeder or getting a retromop (pugs that are bred healthily will all the pug charm but much less health problems!) is a much better alternative. Stop letting these sweet little things be bred into a miserable life!
P.S. and if you're going to defend this for the sole reason that "they're cute" then congratulations, you're a shallow and awful person who cares more about physical appearances that the life and well being of an animal, and you probably shouldn't be allowed to own pets.

Their main health issue is they want to eat any and everything so you have to be careful with what they can get into. Yes they have breathing problems but just keep them cool and don't over do it on exercise if it's hot out. They love attention and meeting new people. always use a harness for two reasons: 1: the eye popping thing and 2: since their necks are as thick as their heads they can basically take a collar off by walking backwards

Love my pug! Only 5 months old but learning quickly all the things. Keeping face and wrinkles clean is so important and keeping eating and water bowls clean, too. Such a friendly breed. Lots of shedding all over the place, invest in a robot vacuum lol our puppy was $2500 not counting vet care.

My little brother for months begged for a pug and so my mom got him a little black pug with a little white spot on his chest and he was so tiny when we first brought him home but now he's gotten bigger and he's around 6 months he is one of the sweetest dogs I've ever seen in my life he is so kind and playful and affectionate and very hyper too

I see a lot of comments saying like "why not get a healthy dog" and stuff like that, I mean they are great dogs. Their health may not be the best but still they are loyal little dogs. I also saw some comments saying "Their breathing is so annoying why get that dog" And all that stuff. THEY ARE JUST BREATHING. like really people it may be loud and they may drool a lot, But its just breathing and drooling. We all do that too! I love pugs healthy or not.

It shocks me how people always say, "Oh, this dog is so cute, I want it". But they never look at their health needs or other needs such as what their future living environment will be like when adopting a pet. Do they need a home with a yard or an apartment, etc? The first question I ask is it a healthy breed and not say, "Oh, it's so cute and I don't care if it has health issues". A pet owner has to look at their finances before purchasing or adopting a pet. Is the dog breed healthy is the first thing I look at. But it's stupidity to say, "Oh, it's so cute and I don't want to check into this breeds issues". If a person really cares about a future pet they will check into it's other needs instead of how cute they are. It's called, 'Pet Owner Responsibility'. You will care about their health and other issues when the Vet bill is totaled. Stupid, stupid, people. A lot of pets are euthanized because of stupid people who do not do their research when obtaining a pet. Ask questions such as what will their future home environment be, what are their health needs, will they get along with all family members and other pets? Some questions to ask yourself.

Growing up I had the sweetest black pug, he was this cute little barrel that would snort around the house. When he would get tired on walks he would just sit down, and we'd carry him home.

Why do pugs look like dogs who got hit in the face with a pan?
Why don’t the owners understand that you’re sacrificing their normal breathing ability for making them look ‘cute’?

I just put my sweet girl down and it does hurt so badly.
I've been referring back to the deceased pets section of MojosHope.org.
Just reading their FAQ section helped a lot. But there are also grief counselors for pet loss, which I'm strongly thinking of getting.
I hope your heart is healing. My heart is on the way but it does hurt so very much. I hope you take peace in knowing how loved your precious baby was by you. There is hope at the end of the tunnel.

I love the people hating on pugs saying they're horrible dogs to have yet I bet these are the same people who get pissed off when people say the same thing about pitbulls, we all have a preferred dogs types, like the video says a dog matches a person's personality, all dogs are pretty great no matter what type it is and as long as the owner cares for it it should all be okay
