Blackie , Another Great Video and Outstanding Information . Thanks for sharing your time and knowledge, I prefer the lean to and plow point for a quick shelter . Thanks Again For Sharing. You Are The Master Woodsman and Buschcrafter. Tim L.
It always amazes me how enthusiastic people get about bushcraft gear I guess because I always had a military canteen and shovel along with any surplus gear I could beg borrow or pickup as back as I can remember. I remember the first time I walked into the army navy store. It was like Christmas morning! And I'm talking about when I was only 7 or 8 years old and let me tell ya, that was a long time ago...
i hear ya.. i was walking into a store here when i was 8 or so and all the ARMY stuff just got my mind to going of adventures playing soldier camping ect it has been a life long thing for me
Hi Blackie! Buddy this segment is just great. A viewer could come to this video totally ignorant of how to use a poncho for shelter and leave on the other end ready to begin practical application with confidence. Another great resource shared.
I have a rain poncho I used for shelter during my hitchhiking days kept me dry and nobody saw me. Awesome video my friend. Thanks to you and a few others I finally got the hang of knots.
Another great video, Blackie. Your comment about using a poncho as a sled or litter brought back old images - of a poncho covering someone who didn't make it. One old rule in the military... Be it a poncho, a combat dressing or other personal equipment, you did not use your own for someone else; you used theirs. Yours was to bandage, shelter, drag - or cover - you.
If this is your first time to this channel stay awhile this is my favorite youtuber! Blackie another masterful job seriously man I truly appreciate you taking the time to explain it and go through it step by step!!
I usually build my poncho hooches lower to the ground, inside a large shrub or backed up to brush/etc to give more protection from the elements and more camouflaged. I also always pull the hood up, so you get all that extra space in there. I’ve had three people with gear inside, sheltering from bad weather.
Thanks Blackie for showing the configurations you can use with the military poncho, and how to tie a trucker's hitch. I would like to find another poncho so I could make a bigger Plow point shelter. I like the plow point, since it's more enclosed. 👍⛺
The 3 day training pack was designed to mate up with the LBV 88 as a butt pack. Or mounted high. The D ring went over the D ring on the back panel and the strap secured it.
I can tell you from personal experience that you can not snap two ponchos together to make an A frame shelter and stay dry. It does not work. You have to overlap the ponchos at the ridge or you WILL get wet. The single poncho in an a frame was called a Hooch in the Army. The head end was next to a tree no higher than around 24 inches. The foot end was sloped lower. I would put my ruck at the head end and use the lumbar pad on the frame as a pillow. You got in and out by unhooking the poncho from a stake at the head end of the Hooch. During cold weather I would use two ponchos and liners, or Ranger Rolls, tied in opposite directions to make a Field Expedient “sleeping bag.” Although I didn’t have the reflective blanket in mine. I took that particular setup down to freezing temperatures wearing my M65 jacket and liner with long johns. I slept very warm and cozy in that setup.
Hello Blackie could you please do a video on tricks to keep rain water from going under your tarp or poncho...by the way great work teaching brother. Keep up the great work.
Yep when we could get them free they definitely got abused especially if you had issue wet weather pants and jacket too. Pre gortex days . Great videos have fun stay safe.
Good stuff (as always) - thanks for sharing... Btw, I couldn't help but notice when you removed your hat to back into the "pup tent" configuration, that the hat is definitely a necessity in rain or sun... 😁. Take it from me - a "buzz cut" (1 n/8th inch) is so much cheaper to maintain, etc... Hope to make your acquaintance in the future (maybe at your upcoming gathering...?). Thankee agin!
Great video Blackie. Gorilla tape works pretty good for repairing holes, however, when I was still in the service we used "Tenacious Tape" for repairing our ponchos. Worked fantastic. Just a thought for ya.
That brings back a memory, there was a black double sided impregnated cloth carpet tape that was used in commercial aviation, if you crawled on that stuff, once the carpet was remove, even after years under the carpet, the glue on that tape could go through coveralls and stick to your knee skin, hands, nitrile gloves were toast. I think they called that tape tenacious as well. It'd peel skin.
I wish a tarp was made to go with the U.S. military poncho. All the same grommets and snaps to match up. It should include a center tie out point. That is a piece of kit I would buy. Love my poncho.
I'm saying a tarp where the snaps and all match up like the old shelter halfs. Also the fact you may need to leave your shelter in the rain and want your poncho.
Anyone who has ever spent one single night in the rain in one of these would NEVER want to do it again. That is unless you sold your soul to Uncle Sam.
Us old guys were privileged to serve back when the ponchos were more heavy duty. The only modern version that comes close is the German model. Unless they've changed it.
Gorilla clear repair tape claims to be UV resistant, temperature resistant and even to work underwater. Sounds like a bushcrafter's dream... I have no affiliation with them but I'd like to know if anyone has tried it and what kind of results it gave!
in a future ground pounder i will show the winter set up poncho shelter with min kit for an over nighter thanks for watching
Can't wait for that video!
@@jeffrichards5106 same here!!

@@BLACKIETHOMAS it is a very versatile jacket. Add a DWR treatment and it’s an amazing jacket.

The tarp wouldn't have the hood.
i have several USMC surplus tarps you see in my videos camo on oneside and sand color on the other they are the size if not a bit bigger
I'm saying a tarp where the snaps and all match up like the old shelter halfs. Also the fact you may need to leave your shelter in the rain and want your poncho.
Could also use another poncho to protect you from rain while walking about camp. :-) 2 is one, 1 is none.
very true
Blackie Thomas and a Poncho, what possibilities...
well in my defense i was left alone and without adult supervision so lol
is there a good way to reproof ponchos and tarps? something like the Nikwax spray on stuff?
i have used the spray silicone ( waterproofing you find it in sporting goods often )from walmart before it did well
@@BLACKIETHOMAS awesome, thanks Blackie.
Blackie, what size is your bankline your are using for your ties? Great videos 👍👍👍

What about bugs
late fall and early spring they are not a problem summer i would suggest a hammock i will show how to make tarp covers for hammocks in a future video
