What Are Tyre Inserts & Who Are They For? | Cushcore Wheel & Rim Protection For Mountain Bikers

- Tyre inserts have become a popular accessory for mountain bikers in recent years, but what exactly do they do and what type of rider will benefit from them the most? We sent pretty much the whole crew to go and find out! With the whole Cushcore Range, we're heading to the hills to ride everything from XC to Enduro, and even Chris from EMBN joined on his E-bike!

Tyre inserts allow you to run less pressure in your tyres since you're replacing that air volume with a foam damping agent. This, in turn, makes the tyre feel more controlled when it deforms around terrain and corners and gives you maximum grip. Tyre inserts support your tyres in the corners decreasing 'tyre roll' which can make your bike feel odd in the corners and even if you corner hard enough, burp the bead off of the rim. The final main benefit of a tyre insert is to protect your rim and wheel from impacts that can happen when trail riding. There is a trade-off of adding more weight to your wheel, and in the event of ride ending tyre slice, having to remove an insert trail side can be difficult. I installed CC's about three years ago. I won't ride without them anymore. I think they were as transformative to riding as a dropper post. Yes, they are more stable in the berms, but I think they really excel in sharp/rocky chunk. You can hammer rock gardens with wreckless abandon. I weigh 63 kilos and I run 18 psi F and 23 psi R.

Yeah same, and I’m running less pressure than all of them. 18 front 22 rear. No issues with pinch flats. Weigh 145lbs.

I tried cushcore a while back. Definitely reduces trail chatter but couldn’t get away from the added weight and somehow made the bike feel less agile and playful overall. No one mentioned the dreaded install! Happy to be back on a standard tubeless set up and run pretty much the same pressures.....
I appreciate the benefits of tyre inserts, however I don't see how the braking test proves anything. Different riders, different bikes, and therefore different weights; (as well as different geo and suspension) different braking systems, different tyres. A very long bow to draw, to put the test results purely down to different tyre pressures giving more/less traction
True, but this is fun/informational content, so some parts are pure fun and some informative. The test was more fun than scientific in my opinion.
I really believe tire inserts will only get better. They're just like elastic/bump-stop dampers, which are relatively easy to model. 5:35. Like you wisely stated, Phill, different frame geometry, tires, body position/weight allocation, etc. This test isn't very conclusive.
@@williamstryker6643 I'm running DoubleDown tyres on my eeb atm, so don't feel the need for inserts. But running inserts would allow me to run lighter tyres. I have Nukeproof ARD in my accoustic bike but there's probably much better options out there. As you say, the technology is improving and it will be interesting to see how products evolve

Broke a carbon wheel this weekend on my Ripmo. I had CushCore installed previously but I thought a heavier tire casing would protect me. Nope! I can't stand higher PSI because the ride feels rough so back to CushCore for a plush ride and extra protection!
I run Cushcore on both my XC and enduro bike. Definitely has benefits. Noticed on my XC bike that now with lower pressures I can lean more on turns, which before was a bit sketchy. What I havent had yet is a flat on Cushcore. While I've seen people complete a ride with just Cushcore, cant imagine trying to remove it to put a tube in.
Anyone else surprised by how high a pressure they are running, I weigh about the same as Blake and run 19psi on a 160mm trail/enduro bike with cushcore.

I mean, i run around 37psi on the rear for a hardtail and around 28 on the front, (I am running 2.2 tires) and i still get pinch flats running tubeless, tire inserts seem like they would be for me
They are new to mtb riding that is why they are on the high side :D I run similar pressure as yours. I got suprised as well...37psi :DDDD

@@ameraldas3641 You might wnat to run a bit lower pressure. Standard pressure for tubless is like 24 in the back 22 in the back.
5:09 Neil is also significantly lighter, which I'd be willing to bet is overwhelmingly the major factor. It's a shame they didn't swap bikes and try it again.
It's insignificant. Bike weight and gear they wore offset those. It's the knobs in those tires and technique as well, it's Neil!

Same- That was my plan on my Ragley Blue Pig hardtail. Rear only, let me drop pressure, and worry less about annihilating my rear wheel.

I still think running a tube is so much simpler. But you guys definitely got me curious about tubeless, so I'll soon convert my trail bike to tubeless to experience the difference myself. I'm so afraid of puncture or damaging the rim with lower pressure though... inserts would definitely help me feel more confident I'm not going to have a puncture or damaging the rim.
What I can't understand about low tyre pressures is the manufacturer spent a looooong time getting the profile just right so the side knobs dig in when their meant to, not dragging when upright but supportive in the turns.
Yes the suggested PSI on the side is a bit of them covering their asses but is it not also the optimum range found during testing?
Then we bung them on, cough in the valve and ride it about with the side wall calling mercy.
What I'd like to know is what pressures are run during testing?
Are they designed in profile and construction with the expectation we'll run them that low?
And if run at the suggested pressures are they that bad? Does the rubber suddenly find grip by biting through rather than smothering the ground.
Iam guessing it's a bit of both. One the hand you are right that testing makes manufacturers set a window in which to operate the tires in. On the other hand you should go with what you feel is right.
Do they also act like volume spacers in forks, so do they make the tire more progressive, by replacing the air with something else?

Prajwal Pingali depends what bike you’re on. On a plus size hardtail the rear tire pressure is everything. I run my trek Stache at 13-15 psi sometimes, would probably notice the difference in feel.

A lot of the benefits of tire inserts mentioned in this video are quite specific to CushCore, such as supporting and dampening the sidewalls. People shouldn't expect to see all these benefits from a simple insert like a Huck Norris or similar.

i'd love to race you on my normal bike just to see if its only talk, its BS like that makes no sense in the bike community... i have both e-mtb and normal mtb and believe me there is space and moment for both. you can have loads of fun and a hard workout on a ebike if you want, and you can also be a poser on a normal mtb... which is what most of the people that comment the way you did are...
Interesting - I don't run Foam Inserts but I have Bontranger Rim Strips which aid the Tubeless setup and also holding the bead of the tyre to the rim. 85kg kitted with water and I run 20F / 22-24R on 29 x 2.4 tyres. Not had any issues with this combo and carbon rims be it rowdy rock gardens (Finland is the home of those especially from where Pole comes from) to DH tracks in Aus.
Interesting enough Nino runs sub 20psi on his XC bike with 2.4 tyres.
I'm back to using a tube with the Tannus armour insert on my rear wheel and it feels good. As a heavy rider (actual weight and clumsily battering into things!) I've had issues with pinch flats, burping and rim damage. Only got a couple of hundred miles on the Tannus but it seems good so far and I'm now able to run 25 psi where without the insert I was running 40-50 psi to try and keep the snakebites away!
I don't have any real evidence, but I think my 29er is more prone to snakebites than my old 26 was. Maybe more momentum, maybe going faster. Maybe it's just in my head! Could be a future gmbn feature, does wheel size affect puncture likelihood?!
Great video as usual guys, but I feel like the inclusion of a trail/hardcore hardtail would have made a lot of sense as it's where the rim protection and suspension element of the insert are really going to be shown especially with how hard Blake can ride his scout.
I feel like the biggest thing I've noticed isn't even mentioned. I just thought 29ers had vague and non precise steering until I tried cushcore. The sidewalk stability is huge and made my 29er come alive in handling. Never new I had issues with tire squirm, until I installed cushcores. Now I'm stuck with them, because I can't imagine riding without that precise steering.
$70 for a piece of foam. Tell me how a piece of foam cost more than The tire it sits inside. There's a reason why mountain biking is for 30 and older is because they're the only people that can afford to do it. Source: Im 34 with an insert.

I've gone with Tannus inserts with tubes. No more hassle with latex bunging up the valve, pump and tyre. No weight difference but so much easier.

Seriously thinking of fitting an insert on my rear wheel on my Scout
Low pressure, even with inserts, is begging for a sidewall tear. By backing the sidewall you're forcing it to fold vs flex. This will significantly shorten the sidewall life for aggressive riders on rocky trails. Plus you need to add 25% more sealant, it interferes with sealant circulation, and the insert adds significant rolling mass. Climbing is significantly impeded because your pushing that extra mass up the hill. Just run normal PSI and use proper bike to body balance and you're going to stick to everything possible. Just stay away from the impossible. Physics wins the day every day.

When I got my optic I bought some cushcore pro. Used them for 2 weeks and never again. Just can feel them when pedaling and I hate it. And I look at it if I destroy my wheel then I just have a excuse but buy some I9 wheels..

I get incredible " more tire on the ground" with my DT Swiss 40 mm inner width wheels and my 2.6 tires. Even running 26 &22 psi , No Cushcore needed at all.
I have a 3.0 tire bike and have heard that Cushcore might make wide tires squirm less. I'm not really sure I want the added weight, but I find that getting the right PSI with tubeless is very sensitive. If I want to run as low as I can go, about 10 psi, I will feel a lot of roll in corners and can burp air out if not careful. Maybe I could really smash corners with Cushcore because I could run 9-10 psi and not worry about the tire squirming a lot or burping?

when people talk the advantages of tubless they always forget you can put the sealant in the innertube and get a wheel that cannot burp is just as puncture resistant if not more that also doesnt go all super squirmy in the sides.
also it makes tire changes a lot less messy.
one eye It’s not actually just as puncture resistant. The main advantage of tubeless is being able to run lower pressures for better grip. If you do that with a tube then you’re very susceptible to pinch flats and sealant doesn’t help with those.

Need advice pls. Bought some new tyres. Then got a puncture. I patched the inner tube. Inflated the tyre but the wall on the tyre bulges out. How do I stop this?

Hi, what's the easiest insert to install on dh casing Maxxis or continental tires 27.5x2.40?. Should I get te xc inserts for those tires. It's because the cushcore o bigger inserts pro it's too difficult to install, or It might damage the rim and tubeless tape. I think it's a good combination dh casing tires with light inserts xc.
I'd love to try inserts, but a single cushcore costs $100 CDN. It's a piece of frickin foam...should be $40 max.
Agree 100 is insane. I used Walmart thorn tube tires with their thorn liner. Which is only 12$ for the liner 11$ for the tube. I never had a flat
It’s absolutely worth it for riders that go hard in chunk. $150 for the set is much cheaper than a new wheel. The ride quality is immensely improved as well. Total game changer

Try Tannus inserts. Much cheaper and I like them better.

I have nukeproof ADR rim protection in both wheels but I think I'm going to use it in rear wheel only
200lbs and run my 27.5 carbon wheels with Vitoria inserts at 34 psi rear and 30-32 psi front with magic Mary dh tires front and rear on a dh bike.

Because they're good enough to not need so much contact area to maintain grip. Try it sometime. (not sarcasm)
You would do at 67 kilo. I couldn't run that pressure weighing in at 89 kilo.
There seems to be a lot of comments from light weight riders moaning about high tyre pressures, It's relevant to your body weight.

dont mind me, running tubes and never had a flat on the trails. Probably down to me not being skilled enough to ride gnarly enough trails that I would risk a puncture, but still. Blown more tubes commuting through town, and just by having a bike sitting in the sun than I have out mountain biking

Big dude on a big E-bike. That's the same thing I have going on. If the bike weighs 54 pounds, and I weigh 200 pounds, even those big 2.6 tires need a little bit of help if you ride with zero mechanical sympathy for your steed. Popping over obstacles......happens less often on an E-bike, so outfitting it to plow into shit and survive is where Cushcore will probably be saving my bacon.

Cushioned makes an XC an version that's lighter. No need to run the heavy Pro version unless you are riding DH or enduro.

I´d second that! I am 112kg without any gear and I am riding on an average 1.5h rides 3-5 times a week since almost year now. All instructions or tips on setup and gear stop at 90 or 100kg... Cost me 2 cracked frames and 3 broken freehubs so far (two DT Swiss 370 and one Shimano XT) - by pedaling only! All covered by warranty though, but I have just now switched my Orbea Oiz H10 TR for a Canyon Strive CF9 full enduro rig in an attempt to find something that will hold up for regular trail rides by me..
Being another fat boi, I can tell you one thing to start with: we need _way_ more tyre pressure than anyone on GMBN. I weigh 135kg and _never_ run less than 35 psi*. Doing otherwise is just asking for a snakebite.
*: my true regular pressure is 40-42, I don't have a precise pump.

I know tubes add a bit of resistance and weight...but I was hoping to hear more in comparison to the cushcores...anymore pros & cons?? I'm still deciding on Tubless and this seems intriguing...I ride to most my trails and its a journey each time, so I am curious how I can get more protection on & off road while getting faster offroad some gnarly terrain.🤙

Blake tries everything and anything
It's not like you should be all clipless or all flats. Use both. Practice skills and have fun on flats skidding around. Ride clipless on race days or when you want to smash climbs or just have less to worry about. Riding all clipless will hurt your technique unless you actively work against forgetting about your feet and riding flats will keep your feet on your mind even when you switch back to clipless. It's all about weight on your feet regardless! I switch back and forth and don't do anything on the trail differently (or feel) whether I'm smashing a downhill or falling off the bike. Feet come right out with Shimano SPDs.

Joe Bibby For me, my first clipless ride was like my first dropper seat post ride. Once I was used to it, I didn’t want to ride without it. Flats can be fun, but the extra horsepower and ability to put the back wheel wherever you want is great. I highly recommend the Crankbrothers clipless system. I’ve got the Candys on my trail and XC bike.

I run tubeless + cush core no flats 4 2 years
Only downside is your slime needs replacement far more frequently, like 5-6 weeks - It gets trashed by the insert......

25 and 28 psi seems like a lot to me... I run about 20, with my tubeless trail boss tyres.
I can’t run less than 30 in the rear without bottoming out rims and no less than 25 in front for burping. Just depends on how hard you ride and how rocky your trails are.

You can’t use these kind of inserts with tubes.. they are exclusively for tubeless. Tubeless sorted your punctures, inserts protect the rim, that’s it.
Me hearing those presures dmn those are high, checking mine own bike 27,5-2.8 with tubes f 19psi /r 21 psi.
