- It's not unheard of to spend £10,000/$10,000/€10,000 on an MTB these days. But do you need to spend such astronomical figures? To find out, Neil pitted his thoroughbred Pole Stamina 180, complete with SRAM AXS drivetrain and Trickstuff Direttissima brakes, against his bargain Facebook Marketplace find: the mighty Voodoo Hoodoo. How do the bikes compare? The results may surprise you!

This was so well edited and I wasn’t paying attention I didn’t realize they were the same person until the last second 🤣
omg i've watched this video twice and i didnt notice until i read this comment
yo wtf I literally didn't notice either until i saw this comment lmfao. kudos great editing!
😲
I’m glad I’m not the only one who didn’t notice for a while 😅😅
i thought they were twins XD
"Hardtails aren't up to downhill". Blake out here saying "hold my beer"
Well he said the limit is redbull rampage.
And his hardtail differs pretty much from this one, in price as well
Hold my hardtail* lmao
Arif Azhari well the Rampage is a Freeride event, so still no limit for DH I guess.
You can do it, if you ride realistically and not like a pro with a disposable bike over a trail that isn't really trail and no one would actually ever ride over on a real ride.
as an American, hearing "pounds per kilogram" made my tiny brain hurt
Lmao
Rough translation, Benjamin's per cheeseburger.
Translated to simplified English, that's $1.34s per 2.2lbs. 😉
Just like we Europeans hurt our miniature brains when you say the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit 🙂
@@radiocontrolled9181
Ahh, Fahrenheit. I think i understand quantum mechanics quite a lot better than good ol' Fahrenheit
Something over 10x the price just to save what 10 seconds on the downhill and have some random guy to ponder stealing the bike? Yeah we all know who won here.
Yup... the Stamina! 🤘
Yeah. Like I'm gonna spend 8,000 on a bike just for show. What a wanker.
@@KandiKlover hahahah hahahahah ha ha hahahahah
The one who stole the bike clearly
The pole
you should do a high end hardtail vs a cheap full sus
That would be really cool
I'd add another thumbs up but it's at 69.
@@cornishcactus bruh
They did already.
@@elainedunn1150 They did, a Canyon Neuron vs. Grand Canyon SLX. These are cheap bikes.
This is clearly one of the most well montage'd GMBN video ever.
Is that the reason why tyres are overlapping? xD
Missing Angel/Devil Neil ala Angel Blake tho XD
ikr
This video is pole advertising, that's it.
You mean edited?
Things like this are great for encouraging newbies. It can be daunting running a £300 second-hand bike when everyone around you has a £3000+ brand new DH rig.
DH rig for 3000? WHAT YEAR IS THIS!!??? lmao.
@@larryhouse8358 Chain Reaction has the Nukeproof Dissent (Al 29") for £3300 at this point in time and the Vitus Dominer DH is selling for £2800. There are some "budget" DH rigs out there and the Vitus is surprisingly specced out with Boxxer Selects, Guide REs and a GX 7spd groupset. Sunringle wheels and Maxxis DH tyres set it up to be a decent entry DH bike.
But I get your point, £3000 is just about the cheapest end of the DH market but, at least where I am in Wiltshire (UK), the second-hand market is full of heartbreaking listings, I'm talking custom builds with top end specs going for under £1500. This corner of the world doesn't really warrant big rigs and Enduros are apidly becoming capable of competing with DHs but are easier to live with day to day. We're seeing that reflected in many local shops and online now, people are moving toward hard-core trail bikes and Enduros and it's causing some reasonable offers on the bigger bikes.
@@larryhouse8358 There are a few.
My first races I rode my everyday bike to the race with a lock on the handlebars and a rear rack. Most of the other beginners had $1000+ hardtails (back in the 90's). Beginners my ass.
So many people get hung up on pricing of bikes and yeah it can be crazy expensive, but just ride what you can afford and you’ll still have fun and get fitter. Even if you never stop dreaming about an upgrade 😄
@Spencer Parkin yeah but crap on straights full suspension is awful no speed or nothing
i ride my dadls old decathlon full suspension bike that is 16 years old and i have a not of fun.
Exactly it's about having fun. We didn't have all this crazy MTB technology 20 years ago yet we took our bikes to the Cannock chase and still had a good time 🙂
I like it. Keep riding, keep dreamin
@@nosey2239 I'd have to put the blame on the rider here. If you're lacking so much speed, until it is significantly slower than a hardtail. The rider is the problem. A hardtail and a full sus, on the same rider should only be seconds apart. I know this because I ride both a hardtail AND a full sus.
Counter argument:
The entry level bike here climbs faster and descends longer for each climb.
lol good point, more and longer to enjoy, why didn't I realize sooner
Plus if you crash , you start to question your bike choice if you pick the 10.000 one compared to 1000 to 2000 one.
I anit paying no goddamn 10,000 for a fucking bike even if I was rich,
@@germanywho you goddamn right. Me too
@@arifazhari7598 👍🏼 have a great one bro👍🏼
Please compare two bikes from the same category.
For example:
Cheap Hardtail vs High End Hardtail
Would be really interesting :)
Not really, I upgraded to another hardtail and noticed I could do a lot more than I could ever do on my old bike
The frame/geo is key...the rest between low and high end is componentry, which wears and can be upgraded
Rocky Power it would be an easy conclusion. What’s the point when the voodoo hoodoo is literally £400 and can basically do everything another hardtail suited for the same riding can do.
@@mazdarx-8rotary.97 a top end hardtail would have an air fork (makibg it lighter), better quality 1 by drivetrain making it more efficient and a dropper post. Blake made a video about a hardtail with a dropper post and it beat a full sus with the seat up.
Rocky Power you do realise the voodoo hoodoo has an air fork right?
I'm embarrassed about how funny I found that Deore/Dior joke. Well played.
So basically you can ride your whole life with "disposable bikes" and still not spend as much. Lol.
I've had three cheap bikes from 4 to my now 27 years of life. Two of them I outgrew, the last one I still ride.
I live in Mexico so it makes no sense to buy an expensive bike that will get stolen within a year.
Affordable bikes are the way to go, they get the job done.
dunnotck1 I’m from Brazil, which is as bad as Mexico in which regards to bike safety... now I live in Vancouver, where is just as bad as there... the thing is, in my opinion, you should buy the best bike you can afford, and it should be suitable for what you do. No point to get an expensive bike to commute, and it’s kinda silly to buy a HT when you ride very technical trails (regularly), if you can afford a FS, obviously. In the end, the important thing is having fun ;) Cheers!
Well i got a hardtail..during many yrs ..it took too much abuse on the mountains...so tht "disposable bikes" sounds like an expensive bike seller s argument...
Disposable bike😆😆😆 you really downgrade my bike because it was cheap
your body isn’t disposable and sending a “disposable bike” down downhill tracks is putting your body at risk because the bike is as you say “disposable” and if you’re not doing that stuff than you’re missing out on those fun areas of mountain biking
Sometimes I forget that they are the same person
I didn’t even realise until I saw this comment
bruh
I'm not so convinced they are... **suspicion**
WAHT!
@@henryroberts9734 lmao
Next vid: Neil and Neil vs Blake and Blake.
I highly anticipate this.
That's in fact most anticipated crossover of the century.
That could get complicated really quick lol
Hahahahahahah
I've always believed its about the rider, upgrade when you are constantly out riding your bike. I bought a Specialized rock hopper two years ago to ride while I was away from home (I couldn't bring my bike with me) that cheap bike hold a few KOMs on the climbs around Sayulita Mexico. The only thing on that bike that i was annoyed with was the entry level Sun tour "suspension".
So if you feel you can't afford to get in to riding.. think again. buy a bike you can afford and ignore those on carbon bikes because you could end up with better skills than them.
Got a second hand voodoo hoodoo just like this today for 150 I'm delighted with it 😊
Loving neils acting 😂🤙🏻
Video was made in Blake's type 😉
Which neil🤔
Yes! Thank you for showing that you don't need to break the band to get a good bike.
Bank*
But you need to break your bones to be a better and better rider lol.
@@porkadobo813 no that's not a good way to get better but if you think so let us know how it works out for you...
Except Halfords
@@bbarker5766 The best rider I know has broke most of the bones in his body. He's currently got a snapped collar bone. Don't think that's what made him a good rider, it's probably more because he's a lunatic.
I started on a 100mm hard tail and I rode it for 3 years. It taught me a lot of skills that I could transfer to my new 160 full suspension bike. I think hard tails and full sus bikes are so amazing. It doesn't matter what you have. Just go out and ride.
Such a nice production and edition of the video! Well done, GMBN!
The best bike is the one you use.
The better bike is the one you buy from the person who bought top of the range bike for using on ride to work scheme and never used it as the rain put them off..
Dave Webster omg this is what I have been thinking about. The best bike to get is the rare finds of someone selling near top of the line for cheap because he needs to get rid of it or is so rich it means little to him.
I paid 10 pounds for a cube 29er rid it for months then sold on for £350 🤣 yes 10 pounds! I think it was stolen but i weren't asking questions at this price
@@lNappa hahaha yeah
I started on the voodoo hoodoo. Had it for 3 weeks during lockdown to get a feel for mtb, I loved it and now have a whyte T-130 not quite the pole but still a great bike. Been hitting the trails at rogate bike park since getting it. 🤙🏻
Hoodoo's are ok. Won many a budget mtb comparison
Did the same as you, dipped my toe in with a 400 quid hardtail, then got the 130.
For nearly everything UK riding can throw at it you don't need anything more, half of whats left improvement in skill can make up.
Love how you had to turn the last 2 challenges into a combined time trial so the Pole would win.....
Now that’s how to do a bike review. Watched and listened to the end. Use this recipe in all your bike reviews. Informative, humor and perspective are spot on!
The only real conclusion for me is: you need more than one bike 😆
n+1
So youre telling me... I should buy more bikes?
and maybe few Neils
You don't need any of that.
I HAVE 2 BIKES LOL........ONE MOONGOOSE XR-PRO AND A CHEAP TREK 3X7 SPEED............................................................BUT IN THE END THE TREK IS MOST LIGHTWEIGHT THAN THE FCK MOONGOOSE 3X8 SPEED....................LOL...............................XC BIKES WON...................................................But in the descend and brakes i feel more good on the moongose.................
I think what matters most is go out, get a bike, and ride. Make sure the bike fits you and your riding style and just RIDE!
I have a '99 Specialized FSR XC, silver, completely stock. The lines are so clean, it's an amazing looking bike. It never leaves my side when I'm out and has always been kept inside my room. I raced it in a Duathlon 3 years ago. I had tons of people ask me what it was and if it was new. It was almost 20 years old at that point but it's in mint condition. The aesthetics, the beauty of the design along with fitness for purpose shouldn't be underestimated when you are purchasing a bike.✨
Amazing how well Neil plays off of Neil, some real good editing there all told (apart from the wheel overlap at the beginning, but hell, that's the most minor thing). This was a delightful video. That cheap ole hardtail is pretty capable.
One of your best videos Neil, loved the acting 😄
What an awesome video - the acting, editing, splicing, all superb. Best one yet GMBN!!!
It's nice to see this channel championing cheap mtb riding for a change. Usually they just put out videos trying to relate to all skill levels whilst wearing and riding high end kit as if everyone should have it.
That camera work on the descending?! Top notch.
Appreciate the content and have to give a big thanks to the cameramen. The shots you lot put into a fun little video are amazing.
i'm not saying i wouldn't go for the pole, but £10k for 12 seconds faster over a £375. which means, it's 100% rider and 0% bike
12 second is a lot when it comes to racing
@@connors3807 It'd be interesting a run with two hardtails or two full sus
@sultanabran1
It's exactly the opposite - same rider for both runs, so 100% bike. Especially in racing it's all about pushing the limits of your capability and of the gear, which is totally different for these two bikes.
But I agree, for anything other than racing, the Pole is probably overkill. ;-)
Darnok Regrer I have a $500 gt aggressor and I outride everyone I know. My roomate can’t keep up with his Santa Cruz so having a good bike doesn’t translate into being a good rider.

Great video. Great advice. Really love the end summary.
I really, really appreciate the directing & editing quality of this video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is easily my favorite video of Neil, he seems to be doing a similar video style to Blake but at the same time making it unique to him. Really hope I get to meet you soon, Neil!!
One of the best videos GMBN have ever made in my opinion
Very interesting and unbiased comparison (and conclusions). Every bike has its purposes and there’s no point in getting a very expensive full suspension bike when you mostly commute or XC. On the other hand, if you enjoy freeride, big jumps or a technical downhill, that’s the way to go.
One of the best videos I’ve ever seen about cheap vs expensive bikes! Well done!
Kudos to the production team on this one. Very creative and informative. I'm still a believer that hardtails require more technical skill that can be transferred to full sus. I don't think there's much skill transfer the other way around.
I went from a super high end bulls duro hardtail (around €3400 all including) to a entry leveled specialized fuse (paid €825 for it) and it was the best choice I ever made!! Soo much more fun on the fuse.
I actually won my school's mtb event on a Voodoo Maji 2018. I was against a lot of £3000+ bikes so it was tough, but wasn't impossible.
What the heck. A school mtb event!

I can't pick. The Pole is so beautiful (wouldn't mind one in my garage) but, I have eternal love for the hardtail.

Good news to you! We also have a hardtail called Taival, which shares some of the characteristics found in Stamina 180. And it's made from steel.

What’s the other guy’s name?
Is Neil the one on the super or hardtail
I could find a difference right a way when I rode an AM/Enduro the first time, I was able to go faster than I can on my hardtail. Maybe it was the 2.4 in tires, or the slacker geo, or the fact that it isn’t a two year old clapped out Rockhopper, but I was significantly faster on my easy home trails.
Great editing on this video! Nice one!
Nice to know i just bought a voodoo hoodoo and love it, glad its capable of the harder downhill stuff

Also props to the sound crew.
I find the sweet spot is about $1500-$2000 for a hardtail or $2500-$3000 for a full suspension.
Spend more if you have money to burn, spend less if you're just starting out and plan to upgrade as you progress.
There is also the pleasure in getting the most out of yours skills. I rode those trails on a full dh bike and it was faster but too easy in a way so less adrenaline and fun
