A bandsaw with a fine metal cutting blade will make short work of those tops. Literally take less than 2 seconds with a nice clean cut and no chomping at the case!
It is totally worth picking up a Dremel. They are multi purpose so you will likely find other uses for it. Just make sure you clean it out regularly as the dust debris will get into the motor area.
Very cool Phil. Never seen that done before. Very helpful if I ever need or want to to crack open a slabed card. Keep the videos coming. Really like the channel.
If you don't care about trying to save the grading label, you could just put the flat head in after on the one corner cut. Still fun to see the mess be made :)
Phil; those pliers that you’re using are called “ lineman’s pliers “ I usually use a big pair of side cutters make the cut at the top middle .usually the case splits in half .
Didnt realize you were so PSA biased. Cool your showing how to do that with the bare minimum requirements. Crazy that you would risk a screwdriver slip on that Orange Tatis. Kudos Phil.
They're called lineman pliers. Electriciuse them, & firefighters are known to carry them in their bunker gear in case of entrapment that includes wiring.
I've seen other people crack open graded cases before, and the only advise i can give you is to put the case under a towel next time while you're cutting it so the plastic chunks dont fly everywhere.
ugh, watching you do this is painful. I used to break my BGS slabs like this and one time my screwdriver slipped and slid right down the face of the card. I then found a new way to break the BGS slabs. All you need is a mini bolt cutter. place the cutter right on the top of the slab, centered. When you cut it, it will split right down the middle without damage to the card. 90% of the time, I don't even need a screwdriver to pop the case off. i should do a video and link it to you.
A little part of me hurts as I'm a BGS collector. PSA is the Wal-mart of slabs IMO. The label kind of looks like a clearance tag. But hey, to each their own. Love the videos.
I like how we’re acting like a dude who pitched against Pujols in his prime for his job is afraid of breaking open a card case. Man gives no fs and I’m here for it
Not sure why people dont like BGS cause their cases look way nicer(PSA looks cheap and thin). Also, the silver and gold labels are super nice, and the sub grades are awesome. Wish more grading companies offer sub grades(so you know what part of the card is nice or not).
As someone else mentioned, those are electrician's linesman pliers. Might be much quicker to purchase a scroll saw or bandsaw if cracking a large number of cases. Would go much faster I'm sure
I know the Tatis cats is worth more now, but there’s no way that McDavid is gonna drop in value. It should surpass Tatis, unless he becomes a sure fire HOF.
I get the appeal of the graded system, but I sometimes miss the days of a person actually making a decision about the worth of a card based on their own assessment of its condition. I got a Griffey Jr. 89 RC for 10 bucks when I was young because of a very minor defect. Sometimes you got lucky, sometime screwed. But that uncertainty is half the fun.
I would try a Dremel with a plastic cutting wheel but if you aren’t into using power tools around your $1400 cards look into Knipex diagonal cutting pliers. They’re the best in the business.
Not sure why people prefer PSA over BGS. They are known to regrade altered or repaired cards. BGS customer service and grading service times are shitty but at least you know the grades are mostly accurate
no lie...thank you...i have a couple cards that are graded by companys no ones heard of i was wanting to break out and sub to psa....your video helped me on how to go about breaking them free....great video
Tin snips work well too. I’ve always wanted to try this using a cordless Dremel with a rotary wheel. Seems like it would give you the best chance at not damaging the card.
I think you're a little insane Poppin Beckett cases in order to get PSA cases a 9.5 exit grade of those cards is really good man and no starter expensive
I know it’s not good for viewing purposes but put the slab in a bag before you crack it. Less clean up time! 😉😂 Great video! My gluts and abs got a workout! It’s a pucker party!
Another great video Phil, I’ve seen this technique a few times, by a few people. Buy yourself a tin snips, only difference is, the cuts are a little smoother/easier. But a text book success.
YOUR CRAZY PHIL!!!!. So what's the price difference between 9.5 and 10.? To be taking the chance. Also what if someone from PSA see's this and gives you lower grade just to piss you off.🤐 I would invest in a little bandsaw to cut the top
Hey, I have a question about the 1992 Classic Four Sport Gold set. Do you know anything about it? If so, is it worth opening? I know it’s a bit late, but I’m just hoping in the small chance you see this and know about it. I’d love if you opened up this classic box
@@philspulls I know you prefer PSA but the card is protected far more with the BGS cases instead of the PSA, the sides of the card can move in the PSA and card slams into the plastic sides.
Awesome Tutorial...the YG Connor McDavid is on my PC check-list. Is $400 to $500 it's value because it was Graded? I collect Legends, Rookies/Young Guns exclusively. Nice Video & TY 4 Sharing !
Thanks for the video. I have a 64 AL bombers, 67 Seaver rookie, and 69 Mantle white letter all in BGS holders that I wanted to cross-over to PSA. But I was worried about the things you mentioned. The Seaver is a BGS 7.5, so that’s the one I’m worried about doing. And I’m hoping for at least a PSA 7.
You should have also probably included safety glasses as a needed tool for this because I can only imagine what a piece of that plastic hitting an eye can do, but I doubt you or anyone who ever does this ever do.
hey phil...would be great if you could do an update when you get these back...have some 9.5 prizm silver basketball cards that im thinking about trying to get PSA 10s out of...
Nice job! 👍 I'm not too much into graded cards. I cracked open a Trout rookie card similar to how you did it. Just cut one corner off then stuck a flathead in there. 😧
Haha, some of these people are hilarious with their comments, they don't get it, do what you want collect what you want as well. I prefer PSA too, cases look better and clearer, hate that sleeve bgs puts on it. Pretty cool video Phil, thanks for the tutorial bro, I have a few I need to crack open so I appreciate the lesson. Take care homie and have a good weekend.
Phil: *does something twice*
“I’m pretty much an expert now”
My favorite part of the video lol
That's all it takes to become an expert isn't it???
I would love to see you do a video when the cards come back. Interested in what PSA grades them at!!!
I'll second the Notion ! Yup MmmHmm & TY
Victor Summers ... I 3rd that notion! Inquiring minds wanna know 😉
be best vid ever ..uh it be same or lower
He'll get 9's
Nobody:
Phil: Im gonna go ahead and bust these cards out of the slabs.
I love this channel.
Good thing he's not still pitching...
"Phil Hughes is on the 15 Day DL following card de-casing laceration."
Better than a drone laceration...

More like scratched cornea by plastic projectile.
A bandsaw with a fine metal cutting blade will make short work of those tops. Literally take less than 2 seconds with a nice clean cut and no chomping at the case!
Man I was scared to watch. Thought you cut yourself or damaged the cards. Glad everything was ok.
It is totally worth picking up a Dremel. They are multi purpose so you will likely find other uses for it. Just make sure you clean it out regularly as the dust debris will get into the motor area.
9.5 Tatis grade at $1300...gets it back at a 9.0......$800 value
Very cool Phil. Never seen that done before. Very helpful if I ever need or want to to crack open a slabed card. Keep the videos coming. Really like the channel.
Dremel on a lower speed so it doesn’t throw plastic on the card is worth trying
Phil; The Man, The Myth, The Legend. Ripping cards and ripping slabs. There’s nothing you can’t do.
Kudos Phil.
Those are referred to as Lineman's Pliers .... but a lot easier/faster/cleaner to just run the top thru the table saw/band saw etc and then pop open!
Awesome Tatis. Thanks for sharing and not harming him.
This man is a str9 savage breaking a BGS 9.5(which is what most people dream of getting), cause that shit might come back a PSA 8 or 9(never know).
ugh, watching you do this is painful. I used to break my BGS slabs like this and one time my screwdriver slipped and slid right down the face of the card. I've actually used a dremel tool with a cutting disc. Saw the top right off and pull the case apart. Super easy and zero chance of hurting the card
Tile cutters seems to work better
Diagonal cutters could work better than pliers with wire cutters. Just a thought.
Man gives no fs and I’m here for it
If you watch this at x1.75 speed, the tension is astounding. A pair of nibblers would work well if compressors are too noisy.
Thanks for sharing Phil! Sweet cards too! Love that Tatis. I have a couple BGS 9.0 that I plan on snapping out. Thanks for the tutorial!
Not sure why people dont like BGS cause their cases look way nicer(PSA looks cheap and thin). Also, the silver and gold labels are super nice, and the sub grades are awesome. Wish more grading companies offer sub grades(so you know what part of the card is nice or not).
Ehh all matter of opinion. I personally like the psa cases way better. I don’t like how thick BGS cases are.
As someone else mentioned, those are electrician's linesman pliers. Might be much quicker to purchase a scroll saw or bandsaw if cracking a large number of cases. Would go much faster I'm sure
I don’t do this very often. Those were the only 2 cards I needed to do it to
Diagonal cutting pliers would work a lot better for cutting the top off. Great video, hope they come back as 10’s for you.
I know the Tatis cats is worth more now, but there’s no way that McDavid is gonna drop in value. It should surpass Tatis, unless he becomes a sure fire HOF.
BGS has always been a better grade than PSA. They sell higher as well.
PSA pretty much hands out 10's if you have the 💸$$
Great Video!! Always wanted to see how this is done.... Thank you!!
Cool video.....it was helpful because I have a few I need to crack. Keep up the good work.
I don't know how much impact this would have but it does affect the pop report.
I'd be interested to know if PSA gives the same grade. Follow up video?
BGS doesn’t do half points so it’ll either be a 9 or 10
Much easier to do using a dremel, you control the cut and and won't accidentally damage the card. plus the plastic flying around is dangerous.
I’m curious, why do people generally prefer PSA grading over BGS?
I get the appeal of the graded system, but I sometimes miss the days of a person actually making a decision about the worth of a card based on their own assessment of its condition. I got a Griffey Jr. 89 RC for 10 bucks when I was young because of a very minor defect. Sometimes you got lucky, sometime screwed. But that uncertainty is half the fun.

Lmao this is fantastic! I love you for doing this to the cards!

Wiggle it, just a little bit! Hell of a job. I've pitched a few times, I'm an expert too! Lol best channel on YT
Dude you’re a millionaire, get an air tool and a cutoff wheel bro.
Whats a millionaire have to do with it. Us broke as fools have Harbor Freight..
Say man great video ballsy, one thing bro you forgot safety glasses FYI, enjoy your stuff keep it up!!!
Awesome video, that tool is specifically called a linemans pliers. Love the videos and keep up the good work
Phil I love your videos and editing. My new favorite breaker
Dremel tool or chop saw? Might work better. I think if you bought a pair of welpers, welding pliers, you might get better at it.
Don't hurt that pitching hand 🙈 great job 🏆 I was thinking of using a jack hammer 👷
The amount of baseball puns in the comment section of your videos 😂
This is my favorite content. Phil breaking stuff.
Tin snips work well too. I’ve always wanted to try this using a cordless Dremel with a rotary wheel. Seems like it would give you the best chance at not damaging the card.
I've used a Dremel and it works perfectly....
Those are called linesman pliers and that section is for wire stripping and cutting.
Oh cool
congrats on getting them out safely, screwdriver came close to the tatis, jaw hit the floor phewwwe
shakeitup 777 no one talkin about the screwdriver landing on McDavid. I gasped so hard lol
Another great vid Phil.

Thanks!
Its way better that the silly star thing!
Who else wanted to see him do the actual submission? 🤔 Like cut the cards out of the plastic & then place them in Card savers
Another great video Phil, I’ve seen this technique a few times, by a few people. Buy yourself a tin snips, only difference is, the cuts are a little smoother/easier. But a text book success.
Daring. I can’t believe you did this. And glad no one and no cards were hurt during the making of this video.
Got to give them credit. Could make it easy to open, low ball ratings in hope getting you to pay multiple times to rate same card.

I never held my breath so much while watching a youtube video. Lol and him acting like a 500 dollar card is pretty much nothing. Lol

That's crazy Phil but funny on the expert part. I get it though if you don't like BGS then it's all good.
Beckett holds a premium over psa cause they grade tougher doesn’t make much sense doing this to a gold label card but whatever
I prefer PSA

You know what else I can't believe? You guessed it.
Frank Stallone.
Can’t believe Phil passed on a “just the tip” joke
Them pliers is what you tie rebar with, they are called Klein's.
The anxiety before you even start!! Like watching a horror film where they are going into a room you know they shouldn't.

question. why not use a dremmel or small cutting wheel?
Cause I don’t have those things and would be a lot harder to do on camera
@@philspulls gotcha. great video! i'd still be nervous doing that though... :)
Gotta be done sometimes. Thanks for the tutorial! Wish more people shared this
I personally would have used a Dremel cutting wheel for plastic.
Phil, do you own a Dremel? It could cut through it like butter. 😀👍
I don’t
Bingo.....baby cut off wheel and you might not even need the screwdriver
Love the video and completely understand, I only collect PSA cards too.
I put my money on these coming back both 10s from PSA.
🤞🏼🤞🏼
@@philspulls My money is PSA returns with (1) 9
PSA is a frekin skam..ida kept the nice bgs like resend 2 bgs for fun Phil will learn 40yrs n card hobby i know mr.mint personally u cant tell me shyt
Mr. Mint is older than beta tapes, his heyday was early 90's.
Hey Phil, do you have an idea on the value of a Tatis auto/ORANGE #d-25--
topps chrome, Rookie debut...
AB 5766 send it to me ill get it graded free of charge n ship first class bk.

Going to be trying this for the first time soon, thanks for the instructions!
Haven’t laughed this hard in a long time 🤣
Wire cutters would have probably been easier to use lol but solid effort for sure
I did 5 of them and used a hack saw and a flat head, not much mess.
Scary!! Thx Phil.
That was stressful....but I’m a BGS guy...I love the gold and black labels, but I understand that PSA 10 best for resell🤙🏽
Modern cards are headed toward BGS because of the subgrades, but you hit the nail on the head for pre-2000s/non-modern era.
Those are called linesman just an fyi Phil! Use them at work everyday lol
He should have got some kleins
