    A bandsaw with a fine metal cutting blade will make short work of those tops. Literally take less than 2 seconds with a nice clean cut and no chomping at the case!

    It is totally worth picking up a Dremel. They are multi purpose so you will likely find other uses for it. Just make sure you clean it out regularly as the dust debris will get into the motor area.

    If you don't care about trying to save the grading label, you could just put the flat head in after on the one corner cut.
    Still fun to see the mess be made :)

    Phil; those pliers that you’re using are called “ lineman’s pliers “ I usually use a big pair of side cutters make the cut at the top middle .usually the case splits in half .

    Those are referred to as Lineman's Pliers .... but a lot easier/faster/cleaner to just run the top thru the table saw/band saw etc and then pop open!

    They're called lineman pliers. Electriciuse them, & firefighters are known to carry them in their bunker gear in case of entrapment that includes wiring.

    I've seen other people crack open graded cases before, and the only advise i can give you is to put the case under a towel next time while you're cutting it so the plastic chunks dont fly everywhere.

    This man is a str9 savage breaking a BGS 9.5(which is what most people dream of getting), cause that shit might come back a PSA 8 or 9(never know).

    ugh, watching you do this is painful. I used to break my BGS slabs like this and one time my screwdriver slipped and slid right down the face of the card. I then found a new way to break the BGS slabs. All you need is a mini bolt cutter. place the cutter right on the top of the slab, centered. When you cut it, it will split right down the middle without damage to the card. 90% of the time, I don't even need a screwdriver to pop the case off. i should do a video and link it to you.

      I've actually used a dremel tool with a cutting disc. Saw the top right off and pull the case apart. Super easy and zero chance of hurting the card

    A little part of me hurts as I'm a BGS collector. PSA is the Wal-mart of slabs IMO. The label kind of looks like a clearance tag. But hey, to each their own. Love the videos.

    If you watch this at x1.75 speed, the tension is astounding. A pair of nibblers would work well if compressors are too noisy.

    Not sure why people dont like BGS cause their cases look way nicer(PSA looks cheap and thin). Also, the silver and gold labels are super nice, and the sub grades are awesome. Wish more grading companies offer sub grades(so you know what part of the card is nice or not).

    As someone else mentioned, those are electrician's linesman pliers. Might be much quicker to purchase a scroll saw or bandsaw if cracking a large number of cases. Would go much faster I'm sure

    I know the Tatis cats is worth more now, but there’s no way that McDavid is gonna drop in value. It should surpass Tatis, unless he becomes a sure fire HOF.

    BGS has always been a better grade than PSA. They sell higher as well.

    Much easier to do using a dremel, you control the cut and and won't accidentally damage the card. plus the plastic flying around is dangerous.

    I get the appeal of the graded system, but I sometimes miss the days of a person actually making a decision about the worth of a card based on their own assessment of its condition. I got a Griffey Jr. 89 RC for 10 bucks when I was young because of a very minor defect. Sometimes you got lucky, sometime screwed. But that uncertainty is half the fun.

    I would try a Dremel with a plastic cutting wheel but if you aren’t into using power tools around your $1400 cards look into Knipex diagonal cutting pliers. They’re the best in the business.

    Not sure why people prefer PSA over BGS. They are known to regrade altered or repaired cards. BGS customer service and grading service times are shitty but at least you know the grades are mostly accurate

    Dremel tool or chop saw? Might work better. I think if you bought a pair of welpers, welding pliers, you might get better at it.

    Tin snips work well too. I’ve always wanted to try this using a cordless Dremel with a rotary wheel. Seems like it would give you the best chance at not damaging the card.

    Another great video Phil, I’ve seen this technique a few times, by a few people. Buy yourself a tin snips, only difference is, the cuts are a little smoother/easier. But a text book success.

    Beckett holds a premium over psa cause they grade tougher doesn’t make much sense doing this to a gold label card but whatever

      @@philspulls I know you prefer PSA but the card is protected far more with the BGS cases instead of the PSA, the sides of the card can move in the PSA and card slams into the plastic sides.

    Thanks for the video. I have a 64 AL bombers, 67 Seaver rookie, and 69 Mantle white letter all in BGS holders that I wanted to cross-over to PSA. But I was worried about the things you mentioned. The Seaver is a BGS 7.5, so that’s the one I’m worried about doing. And I’m hoping for at least a PSA 7.

    You should have also probably included safety glasses as a needed tool for this because I can only imagine what a piece of that plastic hitting an eye can do, but I doubt you or anyone who ever does this ever do.

      Modern cards are headed toward BGS because of the subgrades, but you hit the nail on the head for pre-2000s/non-modern era.

    Nice job! 👍 I'm not too much into graded cards. I cracked open a Trout rookie card similar to how you did it. Just cut one corner off then stuck a flathead in there. 😧
