Narration is super fun to listen to. World class story teller quality. Make that universe class. The vibe of the narrator's voice imply decades of experience. Behringer must recognize honor and thanks
This is one of the best product reviews I have ever watched on UA-cam, for anything!. Straight to the point without any faffing around plus I didn't get lost trying to keep up with the simpleness of this unit. Many other YTubers could learn a lot from your style. Brilliant. Is this Catalina IOS compatible?
I have the umc22 at home and am slowly learning the craft - I have my eye on this guy and the extension unit in the event my band gets serious about recording our own albums instead of paying other studios
andy i i bought this one too just recently, after i watched this review. i tried and intalled the unit at home , honest to goodness this interface model is very professional simple and elegant
Because you lean on the pricing so much you do need to update this already - 250 and 200 on average respectively which is quite a difference. Great content. Cheers
I recently bought one of these for 16 channel live playback; 90% of audio interfaces won't allow you to reference all DAW outputs, even in ASIO, and the relatively cheap UMC1820 was one of those that did. I shan't go over what's already in this great review, but I'll add the things that I've noticed about this unit. The headphone amps have a lot of volume, i.e. they'll comfortably drive any pair of studio headphones without you having to worry about volume. These headphone amps aren't on par with my Apollo X8, and nor would you expect that given the price difference, but they lack bottom end, and some low mids too, whilst adding quite a bit of top end. To most ears this makes them sound open and transparent, they probably wouldn't notice the lack of low end, but it's worth remembering this as if you were mixing on headphones you'd probably end up with an un-even mix as you'd be over-compensating for the lack of low-end. As mentioned, I use this for 16 track live playback, so I cannot comment on what they're like to record with, but the flexibility with the outputs, and the sheer number of assignable outputs means that this is a real winner for me. It's also worth mentioning that the audio quality from the rear outputs isn't affected in the same way from the headphone amp, if you're concerned by that fizziness you could essentially run your headphones from the rear output 1/2 and use the USB driver to adjust volume there. These are £210 now; still a bargain in whatever respect you feel like measuring it. edit - I've just measured the audio from the rear outputs, it does have the same high-end that the headphone amps do, but, not quite to the same level. I tend to mix with probably too much top-end, I can get away with it on the Apollo X8, but with the UMC1820 I'd probably have to correct that at source before printing the wavs for live playback. However, that's an issue that I've caused myself, rather than being down to the UMC. SO, I'd say its converters are on the bright side, but, that's not always a bad thing and only to an extent that you'd need a high-end interface to compare it against before you really noticed it.
this is an amazing interface honestly i bought one like this , well designed i was surprised the behringer didn designed it just for the sake of multiple inputs but they are really care for an excellent quality sound reproduction , very functional knobs with elegant front panel .i love the features of switchable mono to stereo monitoring perfect for my external vu meter connections.very reasonable price - thank you for this helful audio interface review.. ( doy in paris )
Hi. Thanks for the informative reply, can you please tell me how stable are the operating system drivers? What operating system are you using with Behringer UMC1820?
great interface, no frills driver support in windows. Will work with just about any setup. Has ADAT IN/OUT which gives me 8 more channels. Also, these go on sale on occasion for $199, so keep your eyes peeled. Almost a no brainer to have one if not two of these in every studio!
Great job describing all the ins and outs of this unit (pun mildly intended). I've had one of these for about 5 years now, and I absolutely love it. So much that I bought a second one AND the ADA8200. So I've got 16 channels for my studio and the extra interface for my live band, where it's routed to a DAW that handles all of our separate in-ear mixes and backing tracks for FOH. It's got great quality preamps, a very user-friendly interface and all the features that just about any 8-channel interface under 1000 dollars or pounds will get you. And it's even more affordable now than when it first came out. I paid 250 dollars for the first one in America, then a second one on Thomann for $185 a year or so later. The ADA8200 was about the same price at that time. Since then, Focusrite has improved the Scarlett series, but I have no interest in "upgrading" to that unit, the Behringer handles everything with no flaws, and the latency is about the lowest you can find on the market, sometimes able to play at 8 samples of latency.
I've had two of the UMC404HD since they came out. One for home and one for a portable/remote recording setup. I'm thinking of getting one of these if I ever upgrade/need more inputs. Great unit for the money. Next lowest 8in 8out I saw was the Tascam for about 30% more.
mee too :). the 404 is almost exact copy of the Apogge Quartet....... quartet was 1500..... the uphoria 200 !!!!!!! so today i am gonna look at the 828...... i was wondering if a new 828 is coming soon?
Thank you for the detailed look at the UMC1820 . I currently use a Tascam US 1800 and was looking for a spare. The Behringer UMC1820 and a Behringer ADA8200 would replace it.
Uli behringer buys parts in such high bulk he can have these made and sold for a really low price. JHS pedals, when shooting out the behringer pedal line, pedal described it as "I buy by the crate, behringer buys by the shipping container". Not everything behringer is great but this and the pedal line are amazing. I have the umc1820 and love it. Looking to get the mic preamp for the adat
Thanks. Just to let you know, i took it to a studio just before christmas for a recording session using a Macbook Air & Logic, and it performed like a champ! 👍
Bought over a year ago. Its perfect for my analog audio recording studio Star Studios in Vinemont AL. Agree with this video 100% couldn't have said it any better. Great Video :-) .I luv behringer equip.
I got it and got to say for price wow compared to wat I payed for my motu a few years ago 👍👍👍👍wow Plus if you got mpc one you got 10 ins and outs plus Adat for more ins and outs , no need for a fancy digital mixer , any can mixer and this interface and you sorted If you got a mpc one need all the outputs and ins you can get This is the one ☝️
An MPC One is exactly why I’m looking at this review! XBass can you tell me- have you used the UMC for all of it’s outputs with the MOC, and if so, how it’s been? Any problems? I’m wanting to play live (finger drumming) and have most of my pads be sent as separate outputs to sound desk so they can mix with a band
Thank you sir. My fucking Presonus Studio 1824c just died and I'm fucking pissed. Had it 1.2 years. NOT happy. YOU sold me on this. Watched a few vids and read some reviews , but YOUR vid was great. Thanks. Already got a Behringer ADA8200. SO , I should have no issues getting 16 XLR or mix of instrument inputs going with this.
thanks. yeah I'm lovin the umc1820, and if it dies, it's so cheap you just buy another, lol (btw i think if you register it Behringer now offer 3 years warranty on all their stuff)
I am a Berry fan from way back, but bought an Audient id44 3 years back, and then the Berry ADA8000 8 input expander. Used these until I had to sell right before the first of the year along with most items to survive. Picked up a UMC202HD to get me by, and when it came time to go big I bought the UMC1820 because I was SO impressed with the UMC202HD. I will be adding a ADA8200 soon. The UMC1820 is a great sounding unit, even tho the driver has its quirks. My ONLY real problem is that the UMC202HD goes to 192Kz, where the UMC1820 only goes to 96Kz? But with that said the ADA8200 ny goes to 48Kz, so it is a moot point. GREAT review, and I have to say if I was not convinced already that these interfaces were great you would have sold me!
Could I lean on your for a quick favour? If you press the instrument switch, does the input get louder? I think it should but on mine, it does the opposite - it gets quieter and so I'm concerned it's defective. Especially as the XLR inputs are unusably quiet as well... Thanks!
i have basic knolwledge of English but your review was so clear and i started to think am good in english. whatever i have a concer about how to connect this device to FL Studio and how to record a vocalist and a guitarist also. you did a step by step review which make sens for people like me who just starting music production. if you can help us with another tutorial for connwecting and using this device on Fl studio and Cubase we will be so grateful to you, one more time thank you so musch for this amazing video.
Thanks for this. I'm seriously considering this unit for my first interface. I really like that you pointed out the quality of the unit, and the design considerations that you pointed out. I'm really into those type of things and find that, these days, most products are complete rubbish. I think you sold me on this unit.
Very detailed review, but how many channels can I record simultaneously with my DAW? If I plug in 8 different instruments/mics can record also all of them all in one go via the single USB wire? I tried various audio interfaces in a similar price range and all them 4ch and 6ch in/out devices eventually give me just a stereo signal. To me this defeats the purpose of a multi channel device. You save changing the cables but you can't make a live recording of let's say a fully rigged band (vocals, guitar, bass, drums) or several guitars and mics or multiple (stereo) synth in a single take. So what gives?
This is a great review, thank you! I have one question, if you're a Windows user - can you use the additional outputs for doing 5.1 surround sound through Windows? Thank you again!!
Hello and thankyou for your clear video that helped me to decide and buy an used UMC1820. I have a question: is it possible to sum audio outputs like the iD22 that I had: when you hear sound you have 4 outputs in the same time 1/2 +3/4, here it is possible through a DAW but dawless ? Thanks for advise. Anyway I join you saying it is an highly incredible quality/price gear.
Tempted to get one to replace my ailing Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 Gen 2. A Gen 3 here is Australia is still about $800, and the new Gen 4 is over a grand! I need the i/o and ADAT i/o, but do I need the cost of another Focusrite interface? This looks very similar at less than half the cost of even an older, not current 18i20! I do like the Focustrite Control software though. Very intuitive and simple to use. How's the software control for the Behringer UMC1820?
Can you use this as a stand along (without computer) device? I want to use it with the Behringer Powerplay HA8000 headphone amplifier for silent practice at home so each band member has the "More Me" function.
Hello, I would like to ask: I have a 16 channel analog mixer and I would like to connect it from mic preamp out to the UMC1820, I understand that the 10 line level input bypasses the preamp. But I wondered if I connect a 1/4" TRS cable to the "Midas" input does it bypasses the mic preamp on the interface? Thank you
Hi! Thank you for such a comprehensive review. I have this interface shortlisted, along with a MOTU 4. Can you tell me what sort of latency you're seeing with this interface please?
Great review and walk around. During my gigs, I constantly need to find an audio output for the many media guys I encounter. Is there a unit that can take one audio feed from my mixer and avail it to 8 to 10 outputs so that I can be stressed less about media feed please?
I love what Behringer does and I have many of their products especially their synths but this one did not work for me. I purchased from Sweetwater and they were great remoting into my computer to help fix it. I was getting a pop turning on my speakers even when the UMC 1820 was off. I was told this is normal but I never had that issue with my Apollo twin, Focusrite 18i2, Audient or several other audio interfaces I’ve used. Another issue is when you turn your 1820 off it reverts back to 44.1 and if your using 48 it’s annoying. Behringer confirmed with me this is normal. Sweetwater found a work around where you turn your computer on (I’m on pc windows 11)then go to sound settings and trigger sound from there then it would catch. Too much for me to do so I sent it back. I was also using a behringer Ada 8200 with it and that linked instantly. Behringer was great and pretty fast to respond through Music Tribe but it’s just not the same responding through email when your having issue with a product. Still Love Behringer and will continue to buy their products this one just didn’t work for me.
Well I figured out how they do it at that price :) I sang the praises for six months, seven gigs, twenty hours of live recording. Then the clicks and pops and drop outs started. Escalated to the point where it became unusable. No warranty, no user serviceable parts. Too cheap to spend money on shipping even if it were repairable. Thought it was musicians stomping on cables or something- no, tested it out at home / same issue. Maybe my experience is atypical. Bought the Focusrite 18i20 third generation. Night and day. Barely gets warm / the Behringer always ran hot. Same HP Windows 11 laptop recognizes it immediately at start up. And the Focusrite includes a proper control panel - albeit counter intuitive.
@@in.der.welt.sein. Yes. However...I tried all rates - no joy. Remember, it worked fine for months - and then the problems happened - I didn't change the sample rate, always set to 512. And then the problem escalated - huge dropouts for seconds at a time. Same sample rate settings on my new Focusrite and my old M-Audio and both interfaces work flawlessly. So I have to conclude my Behringer had faulty hardware. It may have resulted from sunlight hitting that black plastic box. Not pro gear. But you may get years of use out of one - I think the sound quality was excellent. Input preamps are a little weak but that doesn't usually matter once you mix the sound. And since I'm just using it for live recording, latency is not a constricting factor - I can select pretty much any rate that works since we aren't overdubbing. Although I don't want any delay to the foh - that would be bad for the musicians. But I've now upped my game with an ART S8 splitter. I take the transformer isolated outs for my interface and the direct outs go to the FOH mixer. So the first thing I do when i arrive is intercept the signals from the mics, keyboards, DI bass amp - whatever - and then pass the unaltered signals to the PA mixer. In fact they do can do their sound check whilst I'm still fiddling with my inputs to my DAW. And just in case someone has a condenser mic requiring 48v phantom power - that gets passed through from the foh mixer. I need to focus on my cameras. All I want to do with the audio tracks is get nice fat waveforms. I mix those tracks when I get home and then edit with the video. I don't want anything to do with the live audio, that's the FOH guys job :)
@@76MrBlack It's toast now. Maybe in a home studio if you're careful it will last a while - but on gigs it didn't hold up. Focusrite 18i20 is reliable - and now I've added the expansion unit - Octopre - plus another splitter - so I can record 16 tracks live which allows me to have multiple mics on the drum kit. Here's a couple recent recordings with the new rig. All the mixing is done in post. At the gig I just make sure I'me capturing nice fat waveforms. ua-cam.com/video/IN93lPFND7k/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/wERY4uDUOyg/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/tEx_RNsIKmc/v-deo.html
" I have both units. I haven't used all 18 inputs, but they all work. Both units *'appear'* well built. I'm sure that *'Convertor Geeks'* will slam these products spec-wise. Yet, the convertors aren't bad tbh. "
heya man this is probably going to be a silly question but i dont know much about audio equipment and cant find an answer anywhere: i have this connected up to PA speakers and am wondering what is the best position for the main out? am i right in saying the main out maxed adds no gain to the signal and therefore no distortion?
Thank you for the review... I have just bought mine... but I do have a question... I can only get streaming on channels 1 and 2, when I use channels from 3 to 8 they do not show when doing live streamings, or is it that just channels 1 and 2 are for streaming¿? I very much appreciate your assistance. CHEERS!!
ughh i can not get mine from recording kick left, snare right. not able to record 8 mics on 8 separate tracks. ive tried turning switches on n off n restarting computer numerous times. is it my DAW?🤔🤬🍻
I am using Behringer UMC204HD for live performance with my band. Out 1+2 stereo backtrack sequencer, Out 3 Guitar - RCA convert to DI, Out 4 RCA click track for drummer. it sound great when using headphones and another output in average level output at home. Problem appear when all out comes together in studio mixer with all the band players, the output sound distorted when raise the volume to average band level output (because need to balance with other band players) , I ensure its not clipping both form DAW or analog Mixer but still distorted when volume raised at average level with another band players I read that because UMC204HD has high THD (Total Harmonic DIstortion) seems cause the problem. Is that happen too with this UMC1820 ? have you try mix in DAW and output the volume up to average band level volume without distorted with this device ?
Hey, great video thanks, I'm just interested where you found the Behringer UMC1820 and ADA8200 Ultragain at those prices, I've only seen them at £235 and £185 respectively? Thanks :)
Hi! Great video! I used to record years ago but my Tascam stopped working as I wasn’t suppprted by the Catalina update on MacBook. Haven’t done anything in four years so thinking about getting back into it again. Is this supported by current MacBook programme and is there a driver needed?
Thanks for great review. Once question: can I use external hardware gear with this integrate? External hardware compressor connected to in and out on the back of the unit and then in DAW set it as a send effect.
No i wouldn't do that, the loop time from OUT to comp and back IN to the DAW will introduce a very small delay, but you could do that with additive FX like reverb & delay. Besides, a compressor used send/return gives you parallel compression. If you did want to get parallel compression using an external compressor, then YES you could do what you describe, but you'd need to line up the resulting recorded compressor audio after the recording is done cos it'll be a little laterelative to the original signal in the DAW due to the round-trip latency. If you use a comp the traditional way it will be in series & best placed before the input record point, but with the dynamic range typical DAWs have now it's hardly worth it in terms of restricting dynamic range like you might on a tape system... unless you are going for a certain compressor sound that is, but obviously once you record THRU a compressor, the compression is baked into the resulting audio recording and cant be removed or modified afterwards.
Can i use this for rehersals with my band (monitoring wit in ears), where we can have own mixes for each member? Or do i have to get the xr18 or something like that.
Question on the direct monitoring. If I understand it correctly, it will allow me to listen to inputs 1-8 without having a DAW running, like in the case of wanting to just sit down and play gear without using the DAW (just practicing or creating sounds before needing to record or apply effects, etc.). Did I get that right?
i've gotten this one for about half a year now, though often when i take it somewhere else than my studio i get more noise, be it white noise or a bassy buzz, do you perhaps have any clue as to why? could it be the power supply being dirty, or the interface itself being quite susceptible to rf-interfernce, or just my cables?
Excellent introduction. Could you pl help explain the diffrence between behringer UMC 1820 and zoom r24 they look close, with r24 having better functions. While individual trach recording is a must have for my requirement, a quick sterio mix out is also a requirement for production jobs. Which of the two or alternatives you suggest. Cost is an important consideration for me. Pl help, I am just starting and don't want to make bad decisions i may regret later.
both function as an 8 mic/line input audio interface, but with the zoom you can record without a computer (max 8 tracks simultaneously & up to 24 tracks in total). So the zoom functions as a glorified portastudio too.... depends what you want to do EXACTLY which you dont really say
on smaller devices with just 1 or 2 mic pre's it can usually take enough power from the usb for 48v phantom power, on larger devices with more preamps it needs a p/s and/or if the device features other stuff such as dsp processing etc
I have an xenyx x2442 mixer. With this unit would I be able to use individual channels from the 2442 and route it to be able to use the individual channels in Cubase 11 pro? i.e channels 1, 2 ,3 and so on and have it show in Cubase as individual channels 1,2,3 and so on? I hope this question makes sense.
The xenyx x2442 has 8 direct out from the first 8 channels. You can route those IN to the first 8 inputs on the UMC1820 & they can be routed to Cubase audio tracks 1, 2, 3 etc. You can Monitor THRU Cubase by connecting the main L/R OUT of Cubase back to a stereo mixer channels on the xenyx x2442. Then connect the xenyx x2442 to your speakers via the Monitor L/R OUT.
@@dancetech Thank you for this speedy response. This is what I was hoping to hear so a big big thank you. I will purchase this right now, very much appreciated.
Could I lean on your for a quick favour? If you press the instrument switch, does the input get louder? I think it should but on mine, it does the opposite - it gets quieter and so I'm concerned it's defective. Especially as the XLR inputs are unusably quiet as well... Thanks!
on mine if i plug in a guitar, the Line is louder than Instrument level. Also on mine the XLR mic sockets are fine. With a dialog condenser mic plugged in (using phantom power) i set the gain to about 2 o'clock to get a good speaking level with the mic about 30cm away. drums etc obviously are way louder so a bit less gain required. Depends how you monitor also. You should always use an interface monitoring THRU the DAW software, so the MONITORING control pot should be turned all the way clockwise to PB 1-2 & audio tracks in the DAW should be set to Input Monitor ON, so the signal passes THRU the DAW audio track and out the other side at the main DAW Outputs 1/2.
Here’s the issue - I shoot videos of small bands, live gigs. I need to intercept the pristine, dry audio that I can mix when I get home and merge with the video. Most all of these are four or five piece bands and have their own microphones, mixer, PA speakers. I don’t want to fiddle with their live sound. I just want to record the tracks on my laptop DAW and feed the signals line out zero latency direct to line in ¼ inch on their boards. I just bought the Behringer UMC 1820 with advertised 8 outputs. Turns out they are controlled from the DAW and even though their driver control panel shows up in advanced settings, it has no affect. No sound out of 3-8. Shame - otherwise a wonderful unit.I recently recorded a three piece band with my old two channel interface. The bass player was adamant not to have his bass come out of the PA speakers - only his cab. But if, like so many of these interfaces all the inputs get mixed to a stereo mix…
have you experimented with the Direct Monitoring control pot & buttons - two buttons: One labelled 'IN 1-2' & the other labelled 'IN 1-8' ? I haven't tried it, but if the knob is turned fully clockwise to PB 1-2, you get direct monitoring and the switch IN 1-8 is depressed, then inputs 1-8 should pass thru to the outputs - did you try experimenting with that? - otherwise maybe try cable splitters -- Another option is taking Direct Outs from the mixing board channels if they have them., or make up some bridged Insert cables and you can take an output from the insert send/return socket on the mixer the venue is using (or buy if you can find some, I think HOSA make one etc)
@@dancetech Ah - cable splitters - that might be the cheapest answer. Thanks. I guess the sound quality wouldn't suffer - maybe a little gain? Although...where would I split them to? For example, I need to take the DI out of the bass amp - into the interface so I can record it. However, the direct output must NOT have that signal in it. The bass cab itself is the only place we want the bass. Anything plugged in to any of those 8 XLR ins gets mixed in to the stereo output at 1&2. Unless you select 1-2 instead of 1 - 8, but if you do that you only have two channels in the monitor mix instead of, say, seven. Yes - I did experiment with the mix knob and switch. 1-2 works but 3 through 8...no signal. As I understand the manual, when you have the mix knob all the way to the left you should have direct output - zero latency - at those trs jacks on the back. No matter what I do, no signal. Turns out these interfaces in this range anyway, rely on the drivers and DAWs to select outputs - instead of just something happening in the box. One man show - I set up a couple cameras and walk about getting video clips which I eventually synch to the audio I mix from my laptop multitrack recording of the gig. I was spoiled by how well this went a couple months ago at a solo gig - my old M Audio interface in to a Windows 7 laptop recording into my DAW, Sony Acid Pro 7. But to further my endeavors I need to record at least four musicians - all their own vocal mics plus instrument DI's, cabs and maybe keyboard. It's all about the sound. If you have the time and still have your UMC 1820 connected, maybe you can do a test on your unit. Go into the driver - Audio Device, Advanced, Configure. If you click on the volume tab you get an Input and Output panel to, theoretically, control the output levels at jacks 1-8. No matter how I slide them still no signal at jacks 3-8.Thanks! I think I good some proper sound at this gig but need more channels for upcoming jobs: ua-cam.com/video/TpRUhTHSusQ/v-deo.html
We use a splitter snake with two sets of 16 tails. One set goes to our XR18 so we can do our own in-ear mixes and multitrack live recording, and the other set goes to FOH (pro: engineer only receives one large set of tails that can go straight into his stage box without needing to mic everyone up - con: you have to mic the band yourself, and if the engineer doesn't have enough inputs on stage, they would have to unplug their own stuff your set - communication is key!). So in your case, you would plug all live cables into the splitter snake, send one set of tails to your UMC or other interface, and the other set goes to FOH.
@@dancetech Oh wait - cable splitters - so I take the source xls and trs plugs and split them, one goes to their board and the other end goes to my UMC 1820 for recording. No monitoring out of the 1820 needed. Looks like Hosa makes some for $14 - two female XLR's into one male and vice versa.
@@rickkproductions2888 You mean without connection to a computer I presume? That's a good question. In theory it could & the unit has the s/pdif/adat switch on the front, but how the routing would work without connection to a computer?... i dunno. The manual of course says nothing on it.
160 quid equals how many dollars :). also, in may 2022, i see they r out of stock at most websights...... i think u got them on a blowout price....... do u think Behringer is coming out with a new one :). thanks sir
Slight Problem when using this interface to send things to digitally to hardware inserts in Pro Tools as there are 10 analogue outputs but only 8 analogue inputs which means the SPDIF inputs are channels 9 & 10 but the SPDIF outputs are 11 and 12. This is a problem when using it with digitally connected hardware inserts in Pro Tools as Pro Tools can only cope with inserts being connected to the same numbered ins and outs e.g. if your using O/P 9 & 10 to send to your hardware unit the return must come back on 9 & 10 and if your using SPDIF then it doesn’t.
I m a beginner about interfaces. But i was wondering, is there any device that would work at the same time as at least 8 audio/midi interface and midi box with usb/midi interface... to make it simple; something that would combine something like Behringer U-phoria UMC C820 + Mio XM 4x4 with 4 five pin midi in/out and 4 USB Midi Host ?
@@alainszyller615 Well you don't have to have separate interface & USB MIDI boxes, you can get many different audio interfaces from various companies which have traditional MIDI IN/OUT connections built-in, any of those would work and then you just need a MDI THRU box to distribute the MIDI OUT from the DAW to your various MIDI hardware units. For playing/triggering the hardware you can do that using a master keyboard connected either via a traditional MIDI IN connection on the audio interface or with a USB master keyboard... In that type of traditional MIDI setup you always play/trigger the external hardware units from the same master keyboard... You play the master keyboard THRU a DAW MIDI track & set the selected MIDI track to the channel of the external hardware unit you want to trigger... the MIDI from the master keyboard passes THRU the DAW MIDI track, is 'channelised' to the correct MIDI channel set on the DAW MIDI track & then passes OUT of the DAW & MIDI socket to the hardware... only the hardware unit assigned to that channel will respond... if more than one hardware unit is set to the same channel you can then create layered sounds using more than one hardware synth, both triggering on the same channel. If you want to play different MIDI hardware synths directly from their own keys and record the MIDI to the DAW, then you'll need a MIDI merge box to bring all the MIDI OUT's from all the hardware synths you wish to be able to play, IN to the DAW MIDI IN socket... Just remember that when you play a hardware synth IN to a DAW MIDI track, the preferred method is to turn Local Control OFF on the synth you are playing so it triggers itself via the returning MIDI data coming back THRU the DAW from the DAW MIDI track. I'M GOING TO BE MAKING TUTORIAL VIDEOS ON ALL THIS SOON WHEN MY STUDIO SETUP IS DONE 👍

hi all i need some help i have got one of these units and iam having a problem getting anything out the main L and R outs i have reloded the drivers a number of times with out any change and also the 8 line outs seem to be problem iam useing cubase 11 as a daw with a tascam dp32sd and my plan is to bounce between the 2 thanks
the behringer must be assigned as the audio interface for the DAW & the MONITORING knob must be fully clockwise pointing to TO: PB1-2 - above the monitoring kob the left button must be NOT depressed so it is assigned to outs 1-2 - then it should work for playback audio from the DAW. To hear incoming audio at the Behringer inputs put the Cubase audio tracks into Monitor mode & obviously each track must be assigned to receive from the required Behringer input.
Are the Outputs 3/4 for the headphones the same output as 3/4 on the back? Meaning if I set up a headphone mix on 3/4 I can’t really use outputs 3&4 on the back for anything else?
yes. but remember, this unit has analog outputs 1-10 on the back, so you get 2 extras. Thus when you use 1/2 for your main monitors you still get 8 analog outs spare, many other units - particularly in this price range only give you 8 outs. Obviously you can also expand the unit with adat (behringer ada8200 best bang for buck) 👍
Hello. bought this one from Thoman. I'm not sure but I think bottom part of soundcard case become very hot. is it normal?? I even sent it back first time becouse of this. They sent me another one and it's same behavior .
Great review, thank you! Do you know if this is iOS12 compatible? I'm running a Focusrite Scarlett Saffire Pro 26 and there's no longer support for the interface!
Good luck with that. I’ve had 4 of their converters, all of them were the 8 channel strip type 8200s. 3 of those 4 died within months of being plugged in and I soled the 4th before it could die. I sent one of the dead ones in for repair and it took 4 months to get back. They did sound remarkably good while they lived but that life was far too short to be worth anything. Behringer doesn’t make bad sounding stuff, they just make stuff that falls apart. Btw, I am not including Klark Technik in that group as many do. I have two of their spq eqs and those seem to be very good and holding up fine at 2 years now.
@@dancetech fair enough question but I definitely have pure power. My power runs from my wall to a CPU, then out to a very expensive power conditioner that actually does work (unlike Musician’s gear, furman and others that are just a circuit breaker) and then to my gear. All of my Behringer’s were consecutive as in one after the other over about 3 years of time. During that time I had a Focusrite 8 pre and art tube opto8 plugged into the same Motu 24Ai. Also plugged into the same ac power I had a Motu 24Ao, and about a 2 dozen high end preamps and compressors. I never had any issue with anything other than those Behringer light pipe units. I also had 3 behringer power play headphone amps over the years that also died early deaths. I had one small behringer eurodesk mixer I bought for tiny solo gigs that Had about 1/2 a year before it died. My consensus is that behringer is crap and crap is crap! There is one exception in that their microphones seem to be very very good. They usually have to be cleaned of flux to sound great but they do sound great and last a long time.
I got one today but i found it sounded completely different (sounded worse) to my focusrite scarlet solo while listening to Spotify and UA-cam through my Adam audio 7" monitors. All the bass seemed to have left and it was significantly brighter in the higher frequencies.. i would like to know if this is something you or anyone else may also have noticed or if Spotify sounds the same between interfaces for you. I'd expect an audio interface to spit out the audio it receives from Spotify or UA-cam without colouring it in any way but for me this doesn't seem to be the case :/ hopefully there is a fix for this or maybe I've just gotten a lemon
My issue with a bank of push-in front panel toggle switches is that the subtle difference in appearance between engaged and disengaged is difficult to discern at a glance in a dimly lit environment. That makes this unit hazardous for live performance use (e.g. recording an event). It does appear to be useful in a budget studio.
hi there. i have latency issues using it on reaper. how do i do feedback loop on this umc device? i am trying to sort the offset setting to have no latency when recording.
the Monitoring control on the UMC1820 should be turned all the way clockwise to PB 1-2 & then set the audio sample buffers in Reaper to the lowest, that should do it.
If you can monitor the instruments live, then you can turn the buffer as high as you want since the musician won't hear it anyway. That's really the only way you're going to get "zero" latency.
Hi dancetech, thank you for your review, very helpful. I read somewhere that it is not possible to use different pairs of outputs simultaneously with this interface. Is that true? and can you give me your thoughts on that? If that's the case, I wonder what's the use of having so many outputs? Thank you again.
One use for having so many outputs is if you are performing live, and you want more than just one backing track to send to the FOH engineer. In a normal setup, you use a stereo track with the click on one side, and EVERYTHING ELSE on the other. This relies heavily on the artist's ability to actually mix their single backing track properly, for every song, for every venue. With multiple outputs, you can have a click track, one track for synths, one track just for intros and sound FX, one for bass, violin, or any other instrument you don't want to pay another musician on stage for, and they can all be mixed separately by the FOH engineer, catered to that specific venue. We currently use an LP-16, but I'm considering switching to this as the LP16 output jacks keep breaking right before gigs...
@@B3Band Thank you for the detailed answer, I understand what you mean. Do you know if the ourputs can be used as mono outs as well as in pairs for stereo out? If that's possible I'm getting this interface, so versatile!
I’ve had mine for about 2 1/2 years and have no problems with it. I’ve recorded a drums, guitar & bass and it’s been great. Good quality.
Thanks, yes it is compatible
I have the umc22 at home and am slowly learning the craft - I have my eye on this guy and the extension unit in the event my band gets serious about recording our own albums instead of paying other studios
I've had this for 2 1/2 years, love it. I usually just use one or two channels, but I like the ability to use the extra inputs when I need to!
andy i i bought this one too just recently, after i watched this review. i tried and intalled the unit at home , honest to goodness this interface model is very professional simple and elegant
One of the only audio interfaces below $300 which has two phone outputs aswell lol
I bought it a couple of years ago, and I am still fine with it. For the price? Pretty good! No remarks. Every home studio will be enriched.
Me encantó la explicación y sobre todo la pasión que le imprimes a la review. Saludos desde México :). Nuevo Sub.
Because you lean on the pricing so much you do need to update this already - 250 and 200 on average respectively which is quite a difference. Great content. Cheers
Brilliant analogy the hatchback and the Audi, told a big story, in a simple picture.👍
Nice to hear Behringer get some love as all I seem to see is people slagging off their synth re-creations.
great interface, no frills driver support in windows.
Good review.👍
It works great. My only issue is in Its long-term durability. I've had mines for abt 3yrs. So far it's still alive.
Behringer should pay you for this review... ☺️
just ordered one thanks for your help in that!!!!
I got 1 of these, works nicely so far!
Great review! I'm definitely going with this if I ever upgrade. I've used the 404HD since it first came out and I love it!
Thanks. Just to let you know, i took it to a studio just before christmas for a recording session using a Macbook Air & Logic, and it performed like a champ! 👍
No fucking about. Quality review mate..I'm a bit of an audio snob but you've convinced me. Nice one.
That monitoring condiguration is bloody great when an artist is recording but needs to hear the backing track from the DAW. This thing is best value.
Getting mine tomorrow! Great review - thank you! 👍
The best review out her eon this Card! Very well done, new sub! Only thing i'm missing from their website is which software they're supplying with it.
Bought over a year ago. Its perfect for my analog audio recording studio Star Studios in Vinemont AL. Agree with this video 100% couldn't have said it any better. Great Video :-) .I luv behringer equip.
Nice review man!
cheers 👍
I got it and got to say for price wow compared to wat I payed for my motu a few years ago 👍👍👍👍wow
Plus if you got mpc one you got 10 ins and outs plus Adat for more ins and outs
, no need for a fancy digital mixer , any can mixer and this interface and you sorted
If you got a mpc one need all the outputs and ins you can get
This is the one ☝️
An MPC One is exactly why I’m looking at this review! XBass can you tell me- have you used the UMC for all of it’s outputs with the MOC, and if so, how it’s been? Any problems? I’m wanting to play live (finger drumming) and have most of my pads be sent as separate outputs to sound desk so they can mix with a band
Love you dude, you made me buy it
hehe, they are super for the price! 👍
Thanks!
i have basic knolwledge of English but your review was so clear and i started to think am good in english. whatever i have a concer about how to connect this device to FL Studio and how to record a vocalist and a guitarist also. you did a step by step review which make sens for people like me who just starting music production.
if you can help us with another tutorial for connwecting and using this device on Fl studio and Cubase we will be so grateful to you, one more time thank you so musch for this amazing video.
if you search our channel for Garageband i did some videos showing how to make a song in Garageband, but not in cubase or fruity, sorry
Thanks for this. I'm seriously considering this unit for my first interface. I really like that you pointed out the quality of the unit, and the design considerations that you pointed out. I'm really into those type of things and find that, these days, most products are complete rubbish. I think you sold me on this unit.
love your review. Thank you!
Thanks 👍
It is good value. I got a 2nd one just for the MPC One.
Yes, you can record simultaneously 8 chnls in one pass.
I picked up the Motu M4. Only 4 total inputs. Great sounding unit.
This is a great review, thank you! I have one question, if you're a Windows user - can you use the additional outputs for doing 5.1 surround sound through Windows? Thank you again!!
would this work for plugging mics into then straight into GarageBand via usb? I'm new to recording etc.
p.s thanks for the great review
Hello, I would like to ask:
I have a 16 channel analog mixer and I would like to connect it from mic preamp out to the UMC1820, I understand that the 10 line level input bypasses the preamp.
Is this class compliant? I’d love to multi-out my MPC to a console.
Pops and clicks usually have to do with your sample rate settings.
Try a usb with a Ferrite filter in line.

The UMC404HD and UMC204HD have inserts to plug other gear in along the line. Is that possible with this one?
300 USD at this point.
P.S. Had the sound of James May appearing in your vid for a moment there. 🤣
So, can the headphone be in stereo? I like to run my Line 6 Helix in a stereo format and want to be able to hear that from the headphone signal.
Great. So is this also a soundcard? Can i just plug it in the computer with usb and get 8 Independent tracks on my daw (cubase)?
Yes. I use Cubase with this card. I have a PC & a Mac. No drivers are needed for Mac cmptrs.
" I have both units. I haven't used all 18 inputs, but they all work. Both units *'appear'* well built.
I'm sure that *'Convertor Geeks'* will slam
these products spec-wise. Yet, the convertors
aren't bad tbh. "
heya man this is probably going to be a silly question but i dont know much about audio equipment and cant find an answer anywhere: i have this connected up to PA speakers and am wondering what is the best position for the main out? am i right in saying the main out maxed adds no gain to the signal and therefore no distortion?
I usually try to use 12 o clock for things like that, but if your setup is working with the interface at max, then leave it there.
Do you happen to know how to turn the Uphoria 1820 into 44,000k instead of 48,000k? The control panel seems to be default to 48,000k. Thanks!
you do that in the DAW or other audio software. choose your record sample rate there
I am using Behringer UMC204HD for live performance with my band.
How do you switch from hearing playback in monitors and headphones?
I have this is okay but I discovered that if signal is plug to channel one channel 2 will also display the signal what could be the problem
Hey, great video thanks, I'm just interested where you found the Behringer UMC1820 and ADA8200 Ultragain at those prices, I've only seen them at £235 and £185 respectively? Thanks :)
Loved your video, congrats!
I want to buy one, do you think it works on macOS Catalina?
update: its costing 244 euros now 😪
Update: It's now €269 on Thomann
Hi! Great video! I used to record years ago but my Tascam stopped working as I wasn’t suppprted by the Catalina update on MacBook. Haven’t done anything in four years so thinking about getting back into it again. Is this supported by current MacBook programme and is there a driver needed?
no drivers needed for mac
Amigo, sua placa ainda está funcionando perfeitamente? A latência dela é aceitável? Ela grava os 8 canais separados simultaneamente?
yes, yes & yes
Question on the direct monitoring. If I understand it correctly, it will allow me to listen to inputs 1-8 without having a DAW running, like in the case of wanting to just sit down and play gear without using the DAW (just practicing or creating sounds before needing to record or apply effects, etc.). Did I get that right?
yep
Can you run two 1820's together? Or do you need the 8200 to get 16 channels?
Midas has been taken over by Music Group since 2009 the company of Uli Behringer and also the owner of Behringer Music Products.
Hey, nice review! Do you know if this will work with a USB 3.2 port as well? Thanks!

@@dancetech Awesome! Thanks for the reply!
i've gotten this one for about half a year now, though often when i take it somewhere else than my studio i get more noise, be it white noise or a bassy buzz, do you perhaps have any clue as to why? could it be the power supply being dirty, or the interface itself being quite susceptible to rf-interfernce, or just my cables?
Finally, may I use my smaller Steinberg Audio 2:2 interface with this, as it would give me a total of 10 ins?

Brilliant review
Hi, can you use the line outs as monitors? I'll use this for live setup. 4-pc band with each using in-ear monitor. Cheers.
Great video, but what does the power supply do in an audio interface? My previous one didn’t have it so i’m curious of its uses.
on smaller devices with just 1 or 2 mic pre's it can usually take enough power from the usb for 48v phantom power, on larger devices with more preamps it needs a p/s and/or if the device features other stuff such as dsp processing etc
I didn't see a BNC connection for sync. I have an ADA8200 that I would want to slave to. Is the sync clock necessary?
no, they use simple adat sync, either can be master, the switch is on your ADA
@@dancetech that's super helpful, thanks so much!!
I think I good some proper sound at this gig but need more channels for upcoming jobs:

@@B3Band Thanks. Makes sense. Are you talking about line level through the snakes, microphone level - both? Brand recommendation?
@@dancetech Oh wait - cable splitters - so I take the source xls and trs plugs and split them, one goes to their board and the other end goes to my UMC 1820 for recording. No monitoring out of the 1820 needed. Looks like Hosa makes some for $14 - two female XLR's into one male and vice versa.
I see the Spdif in/out with the rca connectors. But why above the optical(adat) connecters does it say "ADAT/SPDIF"?
cos it can transfer stereo 192k over optical or multi streams at 44.1k or 48k
@@dancetech Thanks for the reply! Will this work in Standalone mode?
@@rickkproductions2888 You mean without connection to a computer I presume? That's a good question. In theory it could & the unit has the s/pdif/adat switch on the front, but how the routing would work without connection to a computer?... i dunno. The manual of course says nothing on it.
@@dancetech Thanks again for the reply !
What does the PAD function do?
reduces the incoming signal before it hits the gain circuit.
@@dancetech Ahh cheers.
Passive Attenuation device.
Reduces the signal
Why not just reduce the gain instead of using PAD?
I m a beginner about interfaces. But i was wondering, is there any device that would work at the same time as
at least 8 audio/midi interface and midi box with usb/midi interface...
to make it simple;
something that would combine something like
Behringer U-phoria UMC C820 + Mio XM 4x4 with 4 five pin midi in/out and 4 USB Midi Host ?
they should all work together because the midi interfaces are not audio devices
@@dancetech thanks a lot. That's what i was guessing. i only asked in case of some device that would combine both functionalities at the same time.
@@dancetech Thank you for this comprehensive explanation, i'm gonna study carefully.

both USB MIDI and 5PIN MIDI:
Kurzweil SP4-88
Behringer DeepMind 12
Behringer 2600
Novation Bass Station 2
Korg SQ1
MIDI controler only with USB MIDI:
Roli Seaboard 49 first gen
Only 5PIN MIDI:
Alesis SR18
CV Gate only:
Moog Werkstatt
I have a
Steinberg audio interface UR22 Mk2
Audio mixer Moukey 8
and I MIDI Daisy chain, probably too much
I use Cubase 9.5 elements
So I thought those 2 devces together would aloow me to work better than the MIDI chaining and the use of my Moukey mixer
will work with the new 2021 M1 MacBook Pro which only has USB-C type connection? Do I just buy a USB-C to USB adapter?
Yes, that’s exactly what you do :-)
Can you play back into it from the computer?
hi all i need some help i have got one of these units and iam having a problem getting anything out the main L and R outs
i have reloded the drivers a number of times with out any change and also the 8 line outs seem to be problem
iam useing cubase 11 as a daw with a tascam dp32sd and my plan is to bounce between the 2
thanks
the behringer must be assigned as the audio interface for the DAW & the MONITORING knob must be fully clockwise pointing to TO: PB1-2 - above the monitoring kob the left button must be NOT depressed so it is assigned to outs 1-2 - then it should work for playback audio from the DAW. To hear incoming audio at the Behringer inputs put the Cubase audio tracks into Monitor mode & obviously each track must be assigned to receive from the required Behringer input.
Is it noisy like other Behringer rack equipment? Any hiss in the monitors??
nope.

@@dancetech Thank you for the prompt reply
3 out of 4? that's incredible odds.are you sure you dont have a dodgy mains power source?
Will I see this as 8 separate channels in my DAW on my Mac and not as a stereo mix down?
see my reply where you asked on the other video
Thanks so much for taking the time to reply! @@dancetech
Hi How you link it with a Apollo twin duo Thnx
hi there. i have latency issues using it on reaper. how do i do feedback loop on this umc device? i am trying to sort the offset setting to have no latency when recording.
the Monitoring control on the UMC1820 should be turned all the way clockwise to PB 1-2 & then set the audio sample buffers in Reaper to the lowest, that should do it.
I think that is only in Asio mode where it only has one set of outs. I may be wrong though. New to all this.
