Thank you for posting this. I was worried about how the reissue would sound as the facelift one was done so well. This has been a most wanted for years since I missed out on the MOV press.
I gotta say I was unimpressed with the new pressing. Starter groove growl on all four sides on mine, and while it does best my OG pressing in sounding beefier, it is definitely still from digital (probably hi res, though). An improvement over the first pressing but sadly a missed opportunity for an all-analog remaster for this masterpiece. For reference of what can be done with 90’s rock with an all-analog pressing, grab one of the recent 2 LP pressings of RHCP’s Blood Sugar Sex Magik, just a fantastic set of discs, definitely the definitive version of that album to own. Maybe one day, Dirt 🙏🏻.
I’m familiar with inner groove distortion, but you’re right, ultra sibilant and obvious digital distortion in the first minute of each track 1. Excellent review and useful information...too many UA-cam vinyl groups are just tedious and so softball in their content. It's nice to find one like yours that actually isn't afraid to express an opinion and back it up with deep knowledge.
I've always been the type to try to collect original pressings, or at least early re-issues, whenever possible. But it never really occurred to me that music in the 90s probably wasn't mixed with vinyl in mind. It was probably mixed to sound good on CD and cassette, and vinyl was kind of an afterthought (if it was released on vinyl at all). Now I'm thinking maybe I should consider modern re-issues for the 90s stuff on my wish list just for better sound quality. I do still like the idea of having an original pressing, though.
Thx ! I ordered my copy upon first announcement. I’m writing this 21.33 wednesday evening in Sweden , and I’ll get mine on friday. This is reassuring regarding the sound quality.
Great video. I'm gonna have to get this. Just realized for a while there wasn't much vinyl I was interested in...all of a sudden Revolver box set; Pink Floyd Animals 2018 remix just released now this lol...there goes my savings account. Still gonna try & stop to visit when the wife & I drive to Florida.
Never had the original on vinyl (as you alluded to most didn't either) but I did pick up the music on vinyl a few years ago and it does sound amazing. Looking forward to the other releases on vinyl...eventually. As you so appropriately stated...first need a lot of them bones! Cheers! 🤘🎶🤘
Excellent album! One of my favorites from the 90s. My CD copy sounds great, so I doubt I'll drop the coin on the new reissue, but it's good to hear they did AIC right by this pressing.
I bought this the first weekend after it came out. I remember my brother and I played it on the cassette player in our stepmother's car twice that day, we were so impressed. We were already fans, but this was such a big step in growth from "Facelift". It's not my favorite AIC record (Facelift is; it was my first ever music purchase), but I still love it. Still have that cassette, too!

Ugh, I didn't know this but that sucks it's not a gatefold. I never get why they cheap out on packaging. It's literally one of the main reasons people collect physical media.
It seems like a massive cop out. It is a stupid, lazy decision and it looks bad. The cardstock is very flimsy, and the record inner sleeves are unlined paper. Disappointed overall, but I bought it for someone else not me. Can't comment on sound at this time.

@@puppetmaster8551 i strongly disagree. Mad season was a great album. Great lyrics. Layne wrote the lyrics for the entire album. He also delegated lyrics to spudso because he was disenchanted with Cantrell’s pompous Fkn attitude
@@JoeMarker lol writing lyrics doesn’t make you an all time great songwriter there is a whole lot more to songwriter than lyrics and Layne didn’t do very much if it. Mad season is a good record and Layne wrote some great lyrics for it but it was also a supergroup, it’s not like Layne wrote the album. Also quit making up random bullshit about Jerry’s “attitude”, Layne literally put out an album with AIC later that year. Everybody in the band was extremely supportive of Layne even cancelling multiple massive tours including one with Metallica so Layne could go to rehab instead. Mad season had nothing to do with Jerry it had to do with Layne wanting to try something different and make an album with some other friends. Some of y’all Layne Stan’s always try to blame shit on the other members it’s dumb as shit. Layne is my favorite singer ever and he was an all time vocalist and a great lyricist but he absolutely was not an all time great songwriter, Jerry on the other hand is because he wrote tons and tons of entire songs something Layne did very little of. He didn’t delegate anything to anyone, Jerry was always the primary songwriter and wrote more of the lyrics on facelift than Layne even did. They both wrote lyrics from the beginning, Layne also wrote more lyrics on tripod than any other album and that was right after mad season, he wasn’t delegating shit. Jerry wrote songs including lyrics and always has, Layne wrote more lyrics as the band went on so the exact opposite of delegating happened. They put out whatever was the best shit, sometime it was Jerry’s lyrics other times it was Layne, musically tho it was always Jerry writing most of the music since their inception. Most of their most iconic songs are written by Jerry including the lyrics, on dirt alone Jerry wrote would?/them bones/rooster/down in a hole, 4 of their most iconic songs ever. Jerry was humble as fuck back in the day also, he had absolutely no problem letting People praise layne for lyrics he wrote and he always downplayed his role in songwriting to try and make it sound like more of a team effort when many of their biggest songs were just Jerry writing everything. The problem with 90s stuff is the compression. They were putting many more songs on a CD and if they did not stretch out the songs onto a double LP the music was compressed to fit on a single album. STP Core is a prime example. Glad to hear they did not make that mistake with this one.
Incorrect. Cds suffer from more compression than vinyl. It's called brickwalling and it's designed to seem loud. To squeeze more songs on vinyl, you have to roll off all the low end. That's not compression
I just got this at my local store today. Kinda a bucket list album for me too. It has a weird digital noise at the start of the 1st song side a. Just not a great sounding album. But not a bad sounding press.
I am amazed and surely agree those high dollar 90s pressings are artifact collectable but not going to make audiophile approval. Interesting point to make. I have this record coming in the mail today! Thank you!
I got the MOV version and found out the reissue was coming out. It sounds really good so I’m sticking with it but the reissue would have saved me some money. Never fails.
I'll be curious how it stacks up against the MOV version, I have it as well. Just waiting for the stupid mail to get my 2 lp set however! (and they should've done a damn gatefold!!)
The problem a lot of 90s albums is the runtime. Most of the albums are well over 50 minutes and that's just too long to put on 1 LP, but record companies still do it. Meaning the audio is going to be lower and probably compressed. It's the reason why I sold my copy of Dirt. I'll probably go pick up the 2lp version.
I have an original first release EU cassette of this record, it sounds really great. So I'll stick with that. When I hear that a reissue is much louder than the original, it instantly makes me think that the dynamic range is f*ked up. Sometimes that's not the case but sadly most of the time it is. Don't know about this one, but makes me think...
What’s the best way to “display” your records? I’m at almost 550 LPs now, and I still haven’t figured it out lol. Sleeve and record inside the jacket or outside?
Fighting 8.5% inflation (more like 35%) with a 1% Fed funds interest rate is like stopping a forest fire with a bucket of water. Folks prepare accordingly. Make investment in other not to depend on the government for funds
I had the MOV pressing for years until I sold it earlier this year since I knew there was going to be a 2LP 30th anniversary edition. Sound wise MOV did a poor job specially compared to their other Alice In Chains releases like MTV Unplugged, their reissue of Dirt is lacking in punch and dynamic range due to being shoehorned on one disc. I was only ok with it since I got it real cheap back in 2018. Going to get the Dirt 30th Anniversary today and I have a good feeling it will blow me away like with the 2LP Facelift Regarding 90's vinyl, only good sounding one I've heard is RHCP's Blood Sugar Sex Magic. Spread across 2LPs with plenty of punch and dynamic range that smokes the 2011 reissue I used to own
Just an off the wall comment/question have you ever given Jesse Collin Young 1973 album song for juli on the turntable and given it a listen it's a common record and you probably have one in your shop
Discogs says there are at least three different pressing plants with this run: MPO in France, Memphis Record Pressing, GZ Media in the Czech Republic, and United Record Pressing in Nashville, with the last receiving some negative reviews in the comments. The Walmart is either MRP or GZ and is getting favorable reviews as is the MPO pressing.
I bought the box set. Like an idiot. But I am very excited about it. Also bought a red copy from Wal Mart. Cancelled when I bought the box set. But Walmart charged me and sent it anyway a few days ago. Lol.
It's true that some Nineties pressings aren't great, but some are worthwhile. NOFX has always done right by their fans when it comes to vinyl. Also, Butthole Surfers' vinyl is pretty great. I have an original press copy of Electriclarrland (released in 1996 -- mine was a promo copy that was still sealed when I bought it from the member of the press it was mailed to) which sounds excellent.
Has anybody came across this!about 10 years ago I bought oasis what’s the story morning glory a double record and I put side one on thinking to listen to oasis and it was side one of Pearl Jam ten 🙁on the other side it was oasis and the second record was oasis also, has anybody came across something like that before?

bro you do NOT want any album on ANY format to sound louder. louder has no headroom. you need to use your volume knob and turn up your volume, you then can take advantage of superior sound quality, high dynamic range, less compression and limiting, les squashing of waveforms. be thankful when a record is quieter.
Man don’t bother with the MOV, I got one like 6 months ago for $150 and I was actually upset with it. I didn’t think it sounded as good as everyone said it did. This new reissue sounds phenomenal though.
I’m not a huge AIC fan, but this reissue has peaked my interest in them again, and I must say I am experiencing an Alice renaissance, and really want to add this to my collection.
The "remaster" now plays when you try to listen to the original version on Apple Music. The sound is not good. They fucked with the mix. Its not the same.
The comments here are pretty misguided imo. The Music on Vinyl pressing honestly doesn’t sound that good. It sounds compressed and is crammed onto 2 sides and is easily the worst of the MoV reissues. Someone mentioned that because Unplugged is highly regarded, then Dirt must be good. It doesn’t really work like that. Unplugged uses original EU metalwork for the MoV reissue so is essentially the first EU mastering repressed onto arguably better quality vinyl. It’s in a completely different league to the MoV Dirt reissue. I am not sure why people are saying it sounds good…maybe they want to offload their copies now? I did find the Jar of Flies to be pretty good aswell. Sap wasn’t quite as good and I would probably pick the Chris Bellman RSD cut over that.
It's so hard to top this album. The fact that AIC still had great releases after it(and after Layne died)is really impressive.

That's awesome I'm glad I got the reissue. I should be getting it tomorrow
“a few of them bones!” 😂
This type of vids are nice as someone starting a collection. Do i need to hunt down a original or the reprint is a better for listening
Sweet! Definitely picking this up then. 😎
I have the MOV and the new repress.
I A/B'd them.. they're very very similar.
I bought the original tape version awesome quality for the time
Were there any other sources other than digital available for this 2022 reissue though?
What about The Nightfly by Donald Fagan. Does it really sound that good?
I have an original first release EU cassette of this record, it sounds really great. So I'll stick with that.
When I hear that a reissue is much louder than the original, it instantly makes me think that the dynamic range is f*ked up. Sometimes that's not the case but sadly most of the time it is. Don't know about this one, but makes me think...
Being spread over 2 discs allows for the volume bump!
I have the original release cassette and it sounds like shit , like all cassettes
@@darianoquinn4157 Depends on the audio system and the condition of the cassette.
🔥THNX!🔥
I have the MOV... I'll compare when the reissue comes in!
I think trading is easier with proper guidance, especially from a proffessional it really helps reduce the chances of running into losses.
Looking lean, mean, fresh and clean, man. Keep up the good work
I had the MOV pressing for years until I sold it earlier this year since I knew there was going to be a 2LP 30th anniversary edition. Sound wise MOV did a poor job specially compared to their other Alice In Chains releases like MTV Unplugged, their reissue of Dirt is lacking in punch and dynamic range due to being shoehorned on one disc. I was only ok with it since I got it real cheap back in 2018.
Going to get the Dirt 30th Anniversary today and I have a good feeling it will blow me away like with the 2LP Facelift
Regarding 90's vinyl, only good sounding one I've heard is RHCP's Blood Sugar Sex Magic. Spread across 2LPs with plenty of punch and dynamic range that smokes the 2011 reissue I used to own
So does it sound like they gave the remaster a bass boost? I hope so, always thought the album lacked bass
To have the artifact is the reason to be a collector
Just an off the wall comment/question have you ever given Jesse Collin Young 1973 album song for juli on the turntable and given it a listen it's a common record and you probably have one in your shop
Love that album!
Cool
Were they pressed in Japan ?
Best place to sell original vinyl?
What is in the deadwax? I understand there are three different cuts.
Mine were both super warped with a bunch of bubbles in the wax. I can't get any records without warps
Got this on pre order!
I think you’ll like it!
@@noblerecords that record blew me away when it came out. I was in high school!
Is the Walmart red version from the same pressing plant as the standard black? Does anyone know? I prefer the audio quality over the color.
I would imagine so. Walmart exclusives actually usually sound great
Discogs says there are at least three different pressing plants with this run: MPO in France, Memphis Record Pressing, GZ Media in the Czech Republic, and United Record Pressing in Nashville, with the last receiving some negative reviews in the comments. The Walmart is either MRP or GZ and is getting favorable reviews as is the MPO pressing.
Also, there are apparently 2 different masterings. The MPO variant is mastered by Rare Form Mastering and the others by Wes Garland. Go figure.
What's the retail? ~$35?
Reissues done right are fantastic. Take Beck for instance......Pallas pressed gems
Huge Alice In Chains ⛓ fan glad that they are finally rereleasing their albums
Me too!
I'm probably going to get Dirt, but am extremely anxious for the Unplugged.
I bought the box set. Like an idiot. But I am very excited about it. Also bought a red copy from Wal Mart. Cancelled when I bought the box set. But Walmart charged me and sent it anyway a few days ago. Lol.
Very cool album
I for one, approve
You only like obscure music you don’t even know
mane this that one guy with the records
Dillon are you talking to yourself through your channels 😂
I got the original vinyl as well. Haven't listend to it in quite some time. I'm not a fan of reissued double vinyls. I'll rather stick with OGs.
I wish I still had my Dirt cassette.
Just dig around and you’ll find dirt
I see what ya did there. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I own it on cassette. Sounds rad! Just ordered a copy of down by law last of the sharpshooters on cassette.
Do you know who remastered it? Is it analog or digitally remastered?
Wow, mine isn't even supposed to ship until next week! :(
I preordered can’t wait, now if they could just reissue jar of flies and unplugged 😎
Yes! I think they will at some point!
@@noblerecords hope so I love aic but those eBay prices are insane. Vinyl scalping is definitely one of the least fun aspects of this hobby.
@@austinjones7104 yeah but you have to admit it feels good to own something you see selling for those prices, even if you have no intention to ever sell. Especially if you got it at a fraction of the asking price.
@@mikepotter3802 oh for sure seeing something you own become rare, desirable, or valuable is always fun, unless you’re in the buying market. I collect music autographs there’s plenty of ups and downs.
I’m going off script and compare this latest pressing to my CD copy from the 90’s! I’ll keep you posted
Probably same audio source 🤣
Is it 45rpm or not?
Loud is good so long as it not smashed
bro you do NOT want any album on ANY format to sound louder. louder has no headroom. you need to use your volume knob and turn up your volume, you then can take advantage of superior sound quality, high dynamic range, less compression and limiting, les squashing of waveforms. be thankful when a record is quieter.
Nice...
Thanks for watching! 🙏
Not being a gatefold sucks though. Unnecessary cut cost there
Man don’t bother with the MOV, I got one like 6 months ago for $150 and I was actually upset with it. I didn’t think it sounded as good as everyone said it did. This new reissue sounds phenomenal though.
It is not an UK press. It doesn't exist. The OG has been pressed in Holland and in Spain and Colombia. Check on Discogs. And I have that OG too.
I’m not a huge AIC fan, but this reissue has peaked my interest in them again, and I must say I am experiencing an Alice renaissance, and really want to add this to my collection.
You went on a 'Grunge bender'....LMFAO!
The "remaster" now plays when you try to listen to the original version on Apple Music.
The sound is not good. They fucked with the mix. Its not the same.
Today I receive my Funko pop of Alice in Chains DIRT, Sad :(
Thanks for watching! 🙏
A few of them bones. I see what you did there
Thank you! 🤣🤣🤣
My experiences with nowadays represes are completely opposite. Most of my newer vinyl sounds like shit.
