Legend has it that there's the blue axem ranger who controls the dragonzord.
That pre-fight side view line up is a nice little sentai trope parody.
SMBZ was pretty much my main introduction to the Axem Rangers as a kid. Almost blew my mind to see them in an actual Mario game a couple years later lol
But in the game they come from, they look too simplistic and weak. In Super Mario Bros. Z, on the other hand, they look really threatening and dangerous. And in fact I was extremely disappointed when I found out what their real form was like in the games.😒
In the series they looked so epic.😋

This was the scariest boss battle for me back then. Not Smithy, not Culex. These guys. Then you have to fight the ship itself.

@@Mr.M2045 5 against 3, then after they lose, I have to fight one more guy ready to wipe my whole weakened team out. Then I had to do that chase sequence again

This was where I raged quit the game in the original. This fight in particular could've been perfect with a 5v5 fight
I totally agree. In the original game, I lost this fight thousand of times. It was impossible. The only way I could win was using Lazy Shell attack on Mario and Lazy Shell cloth on Peach. She receives just 1 damage with it and saves the team.
Someone told me two decades ago, that in order to beat them, you had to take out each member in the following order.
Pink
Green
Black
Yellow
Red
Nah, that's just from least to most health.
There is a logical reason for it though. Pink has the lowest health, and is the biggest nuisance. She can heal others and turn your party into mushrooms and such. Green then has a lot of powerful spells that attack the whole party. Then black just attacks a lot and often. Yellow doesn't do much but has a lot of HP. Then if you beat red, the breaker beam thing is activated and I think it's actually possible for red to get on there when defeated, even if the others aren't. Red also does a buff part way through the fight, I think so he gets stronger as the others go down, so the difficultly isn't too trivial when the others start to fall. And from what I understand, this is generally considered the best boss fight of the game.

Yes, I remember that as well - and Scott8978's explanation jibes with my recollection of how the battle went.
@@Scott89878 I've read that some would take green out first since his spells can be more annoying than Pink's healing. She heals, but she only does one member at a time, compared to Green who attacks everyone at once a lot.
I haven't seen it mentioned very much yet, but I really love how they redesigned Blade. If you look at Blade's original design, it has absolutely nothing to do (visually speaking) with the arena where you fight the Axem Rangers, despite the fact that you're supposed to be fighting them aboard Blade. "Where exactly on Blade did they jump to?" I always wondered.
Well wonder no more, because now Blade's deck looks exactly the same before the fight as it does during the fight. Hooray for visual consistency! ^_^

This boss fight is precisely why I never finished the original game…the Axem Rangers themselves would fuck up my team and then the ship would finish them off…
That it took me the same amount of time and effort in the remake is insane. During the 3rd try, I managed once again to defeat them along with the Blade 😂😂😂

I’m so happy playing this game, I never beat it on snes since I got stuck but I remember seeing my neighbor play this level which got me interested. Now I have a lot of experience with Jrpgs and can finally beat this game.

This fight always gave me difficulty in the original game. The Mario mallow bowser triple attack made it hell of a lot easier
Yeah bc you aren't very good at it then. Remakes like this one makes the game easier just as most games are now. Try playing a game from NES or SNES some don't have save points. Yet people now have cheap save points

All these years and it just clicked that it's ironic that the Axem Rangers are fighting Mario in a game where he CAN'T get any larger. (At least not on the SNES version, haven't played the Switch version yet.)
Kinda makes me wanna see them in a more traditional Mario game, in a scenario where once they mount Blade, Mario needs to get a Mega Mushroom to do any damage. Bonus points if they can work Peach into the scenario, throwing the mushrooms his way- "Magic mushroom, make my plumber grow!"
So "Axem Rangers" is now "Blade" when you defeate all the Axem Rangers
Indeed. The final target in that fight being called "Axem Rangers" in the SNES english version was a translation error. You see, Blade's name in the original Japanese was "Axe Force", so one of the translators might have mistakenly thought you were attacking the Axem Rangers as a group. But no, in that phase of the fight, the target you're hitting is their battleship, Blade.
Yes, that was actually an error on Ted Woolsey’s part. He was the translator of the original SMRPG game. You’re actually fighting the Blade ship in the second phase, not the Axem Rangers’ combined forces.
I swear I can’t watch this without expecting a random ass Mecha Sonic crashing into the ship.

The mario franchise power rangers, only they were missing blue and tiger.
Funnily enough if you compare them against all of the various Super Sentai teams that have ever existed (even the many ones released after SMRPG), you'll find that the Axem Rangers use a color configuration that has never been used for any sentai.
While there are many teams that have a green ranger on the main team (as opposed to being a sixth ranger like in MMPR/Zyuranger), there has so far never been a sentai that lacked a blue ranger.

The "Tubular" of SMRPG boss battles, if you will. As someone else has already mentioned, it helps to defeat the Rangers in a particular order - Pink, Green, Black, Yellow, and finally Red. I just remembered also that Peach's Mute DOES work on the ship in the original, so I highly recommend those who have this remake try and see if it works!

Likely because these designs were the original style, while in SMBZ they were given new adjusted sprites using Zero's sprites from the Mega Man Zero GBA games for Red, Black and Green, while Yellow and Pink used sprites from GutsMan.EXE and Roll.EXE respectively from the Mega Man Battle Network games.
This was likely because those sprites had a lot more animation to work with compared to the limited ones used from Super Mario RPG.

Wow they made this fight harder. I would guess because you have access to your side party.
they also attempted this fight the harder way.. usually you kill pink then so on so forth so they can't heal.
Not sure if I'd call it harder, the person playing just seems to either have issues with timed blocks or doesn't want to use them.
I don't know if it's just me but this fight was made so much easier in the remake; I was never able to one shot these guys with just the Lazy Shell.

Sadly with the damage boost mechanics added to the remaster nearly every end game boss fight from these guys onward was a push over. My party was doing so much damage i wiped out every ranger at the same time in 3 turns and then the beam breaker in 2 turns after that....still the nostalgia was so sweet and appreciated.

This battle was always a bit on the easier side for me. But then again, at this point, I had the Lazy shell weapon for Mario and all my characters levels were in the early to mid-20s.

@@gregritferdjr I'll have you know that this battle was excruciating, even in the remake. Having never played the original SNES version, I didn't know what to expect. The Breaker was the hardest part.

I hate Breaker Beam. Particularly this one because you might have the defenses or you might not be prepared for it if its your first time.
I remember the first time I played this as a kid I wasn't fluent in English and I was playing a version in Spanish (was it a patch? maybe idk) and I remember getting to this part and "huh, what would Axem stand for... I mean ofc they're a power rangers callback but idk about the name"... now I see the freaking axes and I'm like "OH DUH"
They had the Moves, the Numbers, & the MegaZord to Boot! What happened? How did they Lose?!

This was it, the fight that made me put this game on Easy...The difficulty spikes in this game can be such nonsense with the cheap one-hit kills. Yeah, of course I could just fight more regular encounters to level up, but who tf wants to do that, that's boring AF
