    Ronnie Van Zant loved Merle. Ronnie was a country singer , but he was fronting a southern rock band. I could see Merle singing some Lynyrd Skynyrd songs just as well as I could see Ronnie singing some of Merle’s . This is the perfect example. I love both versions.

      I think if the plane crash hadn't occurred, they might've morphed into a country band at some point, given the fresh blood and unreal talent Gaines injected into the band with his arrival. I'm a guitarist, and you can fake the blues if you're only "ok"...but you can't fake those kind of Danny Gatton/Albert Lee licks up and down the fretboard unless you're "top level"!

    Man Great Players , but I’ve got to say my all time favorite version of the Strangers was from 1977 - 1984 to me no one could touch Roy Nichols but that time period as far as his live band is probably my favorite. With that said Merle always had a phenomenal band until he died ending with probably one of the absolute best lead guitar players his son , what a Amazing Career , Amazing Voice , & Amazing song writer !! I found out at a early age & young musician why he was my grandfather’s favorite & it quickly turned it to my favorite. Now almost 30 years later for me & my Grandfathers been long gone but the poet for the Common man is still my all time favorite!!!

    As well as performing a version of Honky Tonk Night Time Man on the Street Survivors album, Ronnie Van Zant recorded another version of this song using the same tune but using his own lyrics. Ronnie's rewritten version is called "Jacksonville Kid" and appears on the deluxe version of the Street Survivors album released in 2008. Pretty sure you can also find it here on UA-cam.
    Perhaps the most significant thing about it is that it is thought to be the last recording Ronnie ever made.

    Agree with you Sarah 100% on both Synyrd and Garth.. Merle is the best there ever was or ever will be. Sorry Johnny Cash fans; but Merle is the no. 1 guy, ever. He is a professional singer, writer, musician, and imitator; and I don't know of anyone else who can do it all the best!

      +James Rockford I first heard Skynyrd's version and really liked it... as I'm a huge LS fan to begin with. Then I saw that Merle Haggard wrote the tune. I have a connection to the song as I am a bit of a "night owl" by nature. So...who is the "sounds like Roy" referring to? I say Roy Clark.

    Merle and Ronnie were supposed to do a duet, then the unthinkable happened. And in a interview with Gene Odom (RVS childhood friend and
    later on security for Lynyrd Skynyrd band ) had said the last song Ronnie Van Zant heard was Merle singing rambling fever. pilot said trouble, and Gene turned off the cassette player.

    Guitar: Clint Strong, Fiddle: Jimmy Belkin, Dobro&Steel Guitar: Norman Hamlet, Drums: Biff Adams, don't know the bass player unless its Fuzzy Owens. Bonnie Owens is the background vocalist. If you really want to hear Clint Strong play, look up "friend in California", or "cold war", both by Merle Haggard.

    • @cforsberg5244
      @cforsberg5244 4 роки тому

      That's what I thought too...I think in the LS song, Ronnie does mean Roy Nichols, but going by the Haggard video, it looks like Nichols was more of a slide/pedal steel player (?) while Clint Strong is the one actually playing most like how Steve Gaines plays on Skynyrd's cover of it. Could be that Ronnie didn't know that, and assumed Nichols covered all the "guitar bases"....after all, he wasn't a guitarist himself

    • @MarkYeary
      @MarkYeary 4 роки тому

      This was 1987, after Roy had retired for health issues. Clint mentored and shared stage with Roy when he 1st started with Merle in 83-84. Norm Hamlet was Merles Pedal steel/dobro player and band leader from 1967 til the end....2016
