The Hag was the perfect country singer. I was fortunate to see him twice in concert. Thanks Merle for the memories.

George Jones is considered king of country, but for me, It's always been Merle Haggard. I never tire of his mellow country voice. True country.

I always tell people it is like this: There is Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and George Jones. You rank em how you like. But, those are the greatest. I love them all intensely. However, I have to put a thumb on the scales for Merle.

Without a doubt. The most prolific SONG WRITER of his or any other generation in Nashville BAR NONE. Hank Williams carrier was less than 10 years.Haggard's was 50 and he had hits in all 5 decades. His hit songs speak for themselves but, beyond those hits are one of the most important and amazing catalogs by ANY songwriter in ANY genre of music comparable to Bob Dylan, Lennon/McCartney, Cole Porter or ANY other name that one might mention. Music is not a competition but greatness speaks for itself...in my humble opinion.

  • @williamjarman9076

That song has some great lyrics. How many times do you think Mearle went on stage feeling bad. Those footlights bright and in his face. But still had to smile for his fans. I think Mearle went down fast after he realized it was over as far as tours go. Grew up on Mearle and still listening at 63. What a great songwriter, musician and singer. There aren't many that were ever out there like that. ( Hank William's, Mearle Haggard, Kris kristofferson , Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan) They were songwriters first . And wrote many songs for many different artist including themselves, but out of all who among these greats I still have to say Hank William's and Mearle Haggard will always be at the top of the list. Takes a different breed to be able to do what Hank, Mearle, Kris, and Bob did . Songwriters first as I said and always Mearle Haggard will be my favorite of all time.
