- How To Tighten Road King Loose Handlebar. You'll have to loosen up the front nacelle, remove headlight and the bar clamp cover to access and adjust your handle bar on a Road King, You will have to loosen the 4 bolts holding the bars in place. This was done on an 2005 Harley Davidson Road King. This will work on all Road Kings. If you have any question just ask.
Tools Needed
5/16 wench
1/2 deep socket
5/16 deep socket
3/4 inch box wrench
Phillips head screw driver
#Harlydavidsonfix
I just bought an older Road King. Very nice bike.
The only thing I need to do is adjust the handle bars to fit my arms which are a little shorter than the previous owner. So, I need to loosen the bars and pull them closer to me for better comfort. I looked and studied the situation and couldn't figure out just how to get to the bolts to loosen and make the adjustment.
I'm so happy that I ran across your video. I was surprised to find out how involved this process was. No, it wasn't a big, big deal, I never could have figured it out without your video. It was excellent, and simple to understand.
Thank you very very much for taking the time to me make this helpful video. There are people out here who really needed it....namely me ! Lol

Extremely helpful video. I followed it step by step. "Now don't go crazy" in a Long Island accent... It kept going through my head as I was wrenching... Thanks Rocco!

Thanks for posting this! I swapped bars about 20 years ago and they have finally started to work a little loose. This was a fantastic reminder of how I got in there all of those years ago! Great video angles and the tool tips are spot-on! Perfect! Thanks for making this available!

Thank you, Rocco. Helped me adjust the handlebars on my Road King from the previous owner! Patience doesn't begin to cover it, but I just kept repeating to myself, "Rocco said be patient. Rocco said be patient." 😄

I just purchased my first Harley, a 2007 Road King Classic, from a slightly taller guy. Handlebars are bit out of reach. Thanks to you, I will be able to do the adjusting myself, with confidence! Thank you for posting.

Little tip about putting in the bolt, nut, and washer that holds down the cover. Put it in from the top, lift the screw as you turn. You dont have to hold the nut then. Thank you for this video my last Harley was a shovelhead .so quite a bit different. I sware if I could train this 2014 roadking for my 70 flh I would in a second.
Thank you for your Tip David. Ride Safe and have a great day.
Going on road trip to the Florida Keys tomorrow morning and noticed that my bars are loose tonight. Was able to tighten them using your video and it took me all of 10 minutes. Now I don't have to worry. Thank you Rocco!
Happy to hear it all went well. Thank you for watching and all your support hsheynin. Ride safe and that sounds like a great trip.
Thanks. I just bought this Road King and the previous owner, for some reason, pulled the handlebars down so far that they hit the tank. Your video was very well done and easy to follow.

Rocco, your videos are superb. I appreciate every little thing you tell us as you go along. It takes the apprehension out of me trying to do it myself. I've had more than 60 bikes and I've been riding 30 years, but as I was maneuvering my 2002 Road King Classic in my basement - not while riding or running - I lost focus for a split second and it gently lay down on its left side. I was able to lift it back up but now the handlebars are a wee bit loose when I ride. Now that I've seen this video I feel confident in tightening them myself. Thank you!!!

2 wheel Rocco, you’re explanation is one of the best, I enjoy your videos so Thank you!
Thank you so much. Exactly what I wanted to see. Not to tighten handlebars but clean the chrome that is a little oxidized under the chrome cover. Didn't make simple to access that area for a detailed cleaning.
Happy to help. I agree they didn't make it simple but very doable. Take your time. Thank you for watching and all your support Eric ride safe and have a great day.
Thanks Rocco, I noticed my handlebars were loose pushing my bike around the garage. I was going to do my fork oil soon because I watched your video on that about a month ago, so I am going to combine the jobs now. I appreciate you taking the time to teach us.
Happy to help. Any questions just ask. Thank you for watching and your support RSK. Ride safe and have a great day.
@@TwoWheelRocco What does the 3/4 inch bolt that you tightened last underneath do? When I bought my bike used I could tell it had been in a minor accident. when I am sitting on my bike with the wheel straight my handle bars are slightly turned more right, throttle side is closer to me than the clutch side when the wheel is straight. So something got bent but the forks look straight. Is that 3/4 bolt an adjustment for this situation?
@@rsk8310 Those are handle bar bushings. Tighten them up, Try to manipulate your handlebars and they should get them straight again. Or rotate the bushings 90° retighten. Let us know how it works out. I see it a lot on older bikes.

It IUDs not necessary to remove or loosen any bolts for windshield removal, it clipped into place. Furthermore, you do not need to remove the headlights to get to the handlebar bolts.
Just trying to help. The windshield was quite tight. Peoples tighten them so they don't vibrate. Loosen the bolts so don't have those rubber grommets torn up. Now for the chrome trim. That's over the handlebar hardware. That's another story. Maybe your bike don't have it but this one did. Thank you for watching and all your support Jack. Ride safe and have a great day. Take a look 1:12 on video and see if you do not have to remove the trim. Thank you for watching Jack. Ride safe and have a great day.

Excellent video Rocco! I watched a bunch of videos about replacing my bars, but yours is the most thorough - that’s important for me. And your LI accent makes me smile! I love the island. Do you know the band Zebra? WBAB broke them in the early 80’s

Good old days....Thank you for your comment.
Such a ri-goddamn-diculous way for Harley to build this. Typical Harley engineering BS but we love 'em anyway. Thanks for a great video.
I could not have said it better. They know exactly what they are doing. Trying to get your money. Thank you for the Sub Brian. It helps. Ride Safe and have a great day.
@@TwoWheelRocco sometimes when I'm wrenching on one of my Harleys and see how they designed it, I think: are they really this clever, or are they really this stupid? Maybe their market share would improve if they didn't take an adversarial position with their customers by deliberately engineering them to be a pain in the ass to work on.

Just got a new RK, needed some help adjusting the handle bars, this video did the trick. Thanks.
good luck with the Road King they are great bikes. Ride safe have a great day any questions just ask.
I don't know about your 2005 but on newer bikes the rear screw/washer/nut does NOT need to be completely undone. Just run the nut to the end of the screw but don't remove it. Things are now loose enough that you can tilt the cover up and slide it off to the rear. That's why the slot at the back of the headlight nacelle is wider, to allow the screw to slip out. I didn't discover this on my own BTW, it's the recommended procedure in the service manual. Again, I don't know if this applies to your 2005 but it worked like a champ on my 2023.
Just trying to help. Thank you for your comments and all your support Flintstone. Ride safe and have a great day.
@@TwoWheelRocco Seriously, I'm not being critical here. You saw how hard it was to deal with that nut. If you don't completely remove it the job is 10 times easier. That's even how Harley designed it to be done. Why make the job harder than it needs to be?
Harley service manual, page 3-86, steps 3-4:
3. Loosen screw (3) until nut (5) and flat washer are near the end of screw.
4. Lift the handlebar clamp shroud (4 ). Pull rearward through the gap to remove shroud.
Sometimes it's worthwhile to read the service manual :-)

@@cjflintstone9509 My 2002 and my 2005 I do have to remove it, next time I'll take a better look at it and see if I can get away with it but I know my 2002 is a CVO and you still have the tac in your way. I don't know about your 2023, but I do appreciate your time I'm not trying to blow you off, I'm a little busier on a Friday, Thank you for your time.

Great video for helping us know how to adjust the tilt of the handlebars. (or replace a bulb) I just wish someone would post a video of how to alien or straightened the front end (or handlebars) from left/right. I can't tell you how many Harley's I've seen with "off set" or mis-aliened bars. I drives me nuts. You're going down the road with a straight wheel with handlebars off to the left or right.
Happy to help. As for the handlebars, not being straight, that's the bushings they start to wear and get loose. You could tighten them from under the tree. Rotate them straight them. Thank you for watching all your support cowboy. Ride safe and have a great day.

I followed your video yesterday to tighten my 2005 road king custom handlebars...perfect!. I have a question for you if I may. , I need to tighten a running light, I removed the 2 small Allen screws and looked up, I see a nut that looks like I can tighten? How do I get to it with the wire in the way? Is a special tool required?

Super Duper video! Thanks two whole bunches! I did not realize my bars were loose, until I leaned on them while reinstalling my gas tank and they slipped down about four inches. Your video is highly detailed and should be a great help for anyone needing to adjust their bars. PS, is it recommended to use any Blue LocTite on any of the bolts or just leave them bare as you did? Are there any Torque numbers easily available for any of the bolts? I am like a serial killer when it comes to over-torqueing and often stripping bolts and screws.

That second screw buried back under the nacelle is a bitch to get back on. I dropped the washer and it took me 15 minutes to find it and get it back. I finally held the nut and washer up against the underneath side of the nacelle and carefully started threading the screw in from up top. Once I knew the threads caught, I knew I was safe from losing the nut or washer. But that part took half the total time of complete disassembly, handlebar adjustment and reassembly. 😞

Love your videos, picked up plenty of good info. However, the "loose" handlebars I suspect were due to the deterioration of the stock Harley riser bushings and you tightening just compressed them a little further. I would replace them with the new urethane bushings available aftermarket AND Harley has them too!

I looked up on UA-cam "tightening Road King Handlebars" and found your video. Very helpful and no surprises when I did this this morning. One question, did the bars come loose on their own or did you or someone adjust them at some point. I just got my Road King and (maybe you can answer this questions) I added slip on exhaust. When I took the bike for a test ride, the bike completely lost power and turned off. When I turned the ignition off and on, nothing. I went to push the bike in to my garage and the handlebars moved so that's the reason I had to tighten the bars. But any idea why the bike lost power. I know it could be so many things, but thought I would ask anyway. Thank you, Joe
Happy to help. These bikes get old, things loosen up.. Thank you for watching and your sub Joe. Now for your bike. Not Starting. Does the starter work and what is your bike exactly doing when you try to start it?
@@TwoWheelRocco Thanks for the fast reply. It starts now, but I'm not sure why while I was riding it it completely lost all power and shut off. I've never had that happen. I let it sit for about 5-10 minutes and brought my other key FOB and then started the bike. When it lost power, it was like the battery wasn't connected.
@@Joe124100 battery and key fob is weak replace and you should be all right. Seen it before.
