  • My handlebars worked loose. Turns out, it was a worn riser bushing. So, this video shows you how to replace the bushings. The bushings and new bolts were $50.00 at the Harley shop.

An 8 year old video solves the problem I have today. Same bike, same color. Paint is still factory fresh. Thanks for the upload.

Thanks for the video....my 01 Road King has the same problem. Dealer wants 3 hours labor, now I think I can pull it off myself. The best thing about your video was the "rope trick". Great idea!

Just a tip for anyone doing this.
The right riser 'should' have that small washer on top of the bushing.
It is there to match the the left riser which has the Earth eyelet on it, or your handlebars would be slightly uneven.
You would probably never notice the difference if you left the washer out, but it is meant to be there.
On some other models the washer on the right hand side is at the bottom of the riser bolt underneath the triple tree because the Earth Eyelet is on the bottom on the left side.

Thanks this was a big help, also like the way you still take the time to parent your kids while instructing us, good job man.

I just replaced the riser bushings on my 2003 Heritage Classic. I did watch this video, and picked up some pointers. I just loosened the bottom riser bolts, and rotated the fork left to right. Then left again to remove the right riser bolt, and old bushings on the right side, with new polyurethane bushings, and metal sleeve. Fork swung to the right, remove the riser bolt on the left, and old bushings, replaces with new polyurethane bushing, and new sleeve. Torgued left bolt, swung fort to the left again, torqued the right side. Tight, and smooth ride with no vibration.

Good video. My only suggestions would be 1: old blanket on tank and fender. 2: a drop of blue loc-tite on every bolt. Eases the mind while flying down the highway!

I have done some research and it seems the torque is 30-35 foot pounds on the 1/2" bolts and 15-18 foot pounds on the handlebar mounts both with loctite

Torquing to spec is a nice touch. So is loctite

Thank you, I have the same issue with my 2000 road king, and will be following this vid step by step tonight. I thought it was ust gonna be the part holding the bars but once i got it apart i realized that wasnt it. This seems like the issue. Thanks again from ATL Ga

If you're replacing bent bars (or bars you don't care about) you can do what I did and slice off all but the section that bridges the risers and enough for a "handle" on one side. That lets you snug the riser caps on your easy-to-hold new tool, tighten the riser bolts, remove tool and place the bars quickly and easily since the riser bolts will be tight and the bottom risers aligned. You can also use the tool to install risers on a top triple clamp that is not on any forks and you can grip the tool in a bench (or even better a pipe) vise for convenience. I should have made one forty years ago but better late than never.

Nice video. Gave me the encouragement to tackle this job in addition to swapping out handlebars. I'm thinking rubber handled socket wrenches might be a good investment, too!

Good video. I have exact same bike and color scheme. Just did mine. Video was clear and to the point. On a side note ….. mine had that same big washer on the same side. It must’ve been factory! 🤷🏻‍♂️

Why no blue Loctite on the top bolts? Time to switch over to a two pc handlebar clam much stronger clamping and easier to work when replacing bushings. Ask me how I know 2014 flhr with 16' and neoprene bushing's, the HD rubber breaks down too fast..

Good video but I cringe a little when I see your paint and chrome not protected/covered while using hand tools. I always throw an old towel over areas next to where I am working.

Great Video, my 2004 Road Glide has at least 1 1/4-3/4 front to rear play in the bars. Mine will be next. I am sure it will be a joy. Question: Did that bolt dropping out of the bushing knock a Dime size chip in the fender? I about crapped a bus when i thought it might have hit your fender. Hope it never hit. Outstanding Video, Thanks, Scooter 60404

Maybe if theres two washers on one side and non on the other. I would think ,one will go on each side to even them out. And should be on the outside, so would be first to go threw bolt then the other cupped washer ,then the rubber, then next cupped washer reversed like you did in your video. Possibly. I would have to look up the year bike and get a part schematic of there neck pieces , exploded parts view might tell you more in detail. @22:13 in the video, or just before ,sounded like you had two washer on one side.. but I could of heard it wrong also. If so my bad. Someone put first one on no washer. And then realized there was two washers and doubled up on the other side . Probably not remembering they didnt put any on the first side. What years the bike, see if I cant find a schematic parts view of it for yeah.

The ring around the fork lock pops off. The Mohawk strip fastens inside the ring of the taillight. Under the fork unlock ring are two screws. You can see him put it back together in the end
