Thank you so much for the lovely comment. That’s super kind of you and yes we all have a love for the elves, they are so bright and vibrant. Makes them so much fun to paint. I have a great video of theoden coming soon too 👍🏻
Hi Dan, just a quick one to say you're my fave youtube channel for mini painting. I love the pace of your videos, you're very clear with explaining the techniques you use, and really dig your style, too. really good stuff for people my level - not new to the hobby, but want to level up. keep making them, please! would love to see some more old lotr cast metal vids too!)
Wow. This is very humbling and very kind of you my friend. These are such lovely words and I thank you so much for taking the time out to message me. I’m so happy to know you enjoy the pacing and style as I often wonder if it’s something of a format that other would like. I will absolutely get around to collecting and painting more old meta lord of the rings minis. I have a huge list of models that I’d like to get through and lots of different sets that I know people would love to see painted. I will take your words on board and do my best for you my friend. Thank you so much again for your time. Hopefully speak to you soon 👍🏻
@@Bread0fHeaven they've got so much character, don't they. expensive to buy second hand now, but I've been repainting some old Galadhrim warriors I've dug out the loft, and using some of your processes while doing so. so much fun to paint, and I've got Haldir to look forward to next. I actually dry brushed some orange brown onto the chain mail, and although it tones the section down a bit, it really emphasizes the contrast between the plate armour and the chain mail.
@@pkfreeeeeze oh yes they are full of character. Although I like the new Gw models I feel the old ones have their own level of authentic quality and style to them. The idea of adding the light dry brush of brown sounds like a wonderful extra little technique that just makes them pop! I really love that idea. Some of them can be expensive but on times it is possible to grab a little bargain now and then. Sounds like you have quite a nice collection hidden away too. Always nice to find a fellow collector. Keeping them safe or years and looking back on them is a really great. I really do love the armour style on the galadrhim warriors. The panels make for such fantastic focal points and really make them look very regal.
What an amazing video Dan! I love the colour combinations here. I would never have thought to use a purple wash on the brass colour, but it turned out so natural IMO. And the 2 fingers on his draw hand being leather is a great idea that ads so much extra character to him. Your Leather technique is fantastic! And it has really helped my mini's improve their realism look. It's always special to see you use that technique. I'm noticing that you rarely use a straight "Black" colour, but prefer to use really dark greys instead. And after watching so many of your painting sessions, I think I can see why. I believe it looks more natural and highlights easier. At least that is what I gather from it. And it is something that I am starting to do as well. My "black" colours seem so much nicer after mimicing your "blacks". I liked the hair technique as well. I can see the individual strands, and can imagine the heightened sense of pride over dry brushing it. I enjoyed your story mid video too! Sounds like you and your Wife had a lovely time for her Birthday. I'm glad you had a wonderful experience at the Comicon, and met Craig Parker. How cool would that be to meet him again and show him this model? Wow! I really hope you do, and can imagine how impressed he would be to see how you've brought his character to life! I can see a huge smile on his face, yours and your wifes. Magical! My wife and I went to a Comicon here, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. We got to meet Mads Mikkelsen. My wife was a huge fan of his show "Hannibal" and happened to have a canvas bag with an image of Mads (Hannibal) on it, eating a piece of "meat" with a caption saying, "Om nom nom" (a comical way of portraying a tasty reaction to enjoying food) , lol. Mads loved the bag! Asked her all about it, and they shared a nice small conversation. He signed it for her with an autograph from BOTH himself personalized to her, and from Hannibal as well. And I thought that was pretty cool of him. Of course he had pictures of himself to sign for fans, but she was the only one with that unique bag, and now it is all the more special to her... and never got used again, lol. But it is now a keep-sake for her. He was also super nice (as Craig Parker was with you), and he spent much more time with us than he did with the other fans with the generic pictures to sign. Not sure why, but he took a liking to us and we really enjoyed our time with him as well. I'm glad to hear you and your wife's Comicon story, and was glad to share my wife's and mine with you as well. ⭐And I would love to read other subscribers interactions with some people they have met as well, in the comments here too! Hoping to see some here in the future...⭐ Haldir looks so special completed and posed on that wonderful base and background. And what a magical platform you have built and chosen to place him on. You really do build some amazing bases and scenes for your mini's! I feel like we missed out on a video making that base! It is spectacular to say the least! As always, it was a great painting session and lesson, and I enjoyed every minute of it. Your passion just poured through the video on this one, and that warmed my heart as always. That's why I was first drawn to your channel, (ages ago now it seems), stop by, comment, and precisely what separates you from the rest. Yes, again... our own Bob Ross of mini painting!!! Thank you for being such a great guy, Dan! Much love to you and yours, from the Maple Leaf to the Land of the Dragon! See you in the next one, my friend! 💖✌
What a fantastic and lovely story to hear about yourself and your wife meeting Mads like this. I love to hear stories that people have about meeting some of their favourite characters and how down to earth and humble those actors can be. I bet your wife was over the moon with having such a great interaction, but also such a personalised autograph as well. It is always inspiring to meet actors from your favourite tv shows and I find that you have a new found love for their appearances in other projects too. We have not Med Mads as of yet, but after hearing this story I really would love to see him in future and will be looking out for him. ****I would also love to hear others experiences with their favourite actors/actresses and their respective characters. I find these stories so nice to hear**** I am very glad that you like the colour choices on this one, I loved painting the golds and reds specifically on this model and think they really do stand out on the finished piece. Sorry I didn't make a video about the base I made, but I made this base a while ago with the intention of putting this piece together. It was a silly mistake on my part, but maybe in future I will make another cool display piece and do the full process ( I have one in mind already, but I'm waiting for the parts to come - Can't say what it is yet as I don't want to ruin the surprise. ) That subtle little layer of the purple wash really does its job and makes the brass colour look separate from the golden layers above. On the topic of "blacks" it is more of a case of me enjoying to paint the whole model and use a lighter primer. I know there's a few people out there who enjoy to prime in black and build the layers up and that is a great way of painting and suits their styles, but for my and my terrible eyes I find black as a primer to be too harsh. Using a grey primer for me allows the colours to really boost the vibrancy and allows for a nice bright finish at the end. This is all just personal choice and doesn't mean that any one style is better than another, simply that they are different ways to paint is all. I can find sometimes that when models are primed black it can be easy to just leave some areas black instead of shading them and that's just not my style of painting. I hope this gives a bit more of an idea as to why I use the greys more and build up from there. Again I find that spending some extra time really paying attention to the small details like the hair can really bring the model to life and can also give that sense of accomplishment and pride in the finished piece. It's a very rewarding part of the painting process that I find helps to level up your painting ability in a nice and easy way that also look great too. I can't thank you enough again for all of the comments you have shared on this channel my friend. It is always a pleasure to hear from you on here and to hear your opinions too. You always have a great way of communicating and a very friendly manner about you. You always add so much more value to the channel and the videos I post as the comments section is becoming a great community thanks to the likes of you. It is an older mini that is out of print unfortunately - however there is a strong second hand market for it on eBay. I got this one on eBay for roughly £8! A very good price for a quality mini. It’s just my personal choice and preferred base to paint off. I find with grey it sits well on the model but at the same time it doesn’t absorb the colour and tone down the colours as you apply them. This allows me to build the vibrancy and build the lightness up in a quick and easy way. Like I said it’s just purely personal. You could prime black if you would prefer but some of the colours may look different if you follow the same way of painting I have done here 👍🏻. I hope this helps you my friend.
