For the last four years, we have been steadily working on building an off-grid, self-reliant life. Together we build our home from the ground up with is fully off-grid and runs on solar power. We also have been working to develop our farm and 100x100sqft garden. In today's episode, we finish up our mobile self-sufficient chicken coop and head down to our pond to go fishing.

We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.

I want to comment on Erin's evolution in reference to editing and photography/Videography. You have come a long way in 4 years! BUT I also remember Josh being camera shy.......oh, sometimes I long for the Good Old Days! Lol just kidding. 4 years in, and still loving your channel!
This family produces, by far, the most professional, "done right the 1st time", extremely high quality DIY vidjas on the planet. Make it look so easy, but those who do this irl, know it is anything but! God bless you all.

Make sure those egg collecting doors don't just slide up, but have a critter proof latch. Round here, the foxes would figure a slide up hatch in minutes. They are clever enough to open the hen house doors if they have a simple drop latch halfway up the door (that they can reach). Lost enough hens to fully admire how resourceful foxes can be.
That's great info to supply.
Had a strong feeling for years that European foxes were bred and trained by clans 1000’s of years ago to steal food from neighbouring clans/tribes. When I first saw Gobekliteki carvings of foxes and similar in other 3d cave paintings, it became more likely.

Suggestion: put an overflow pipe at or near the top of the barrel to keep water from soaking the wooden floor and inside the coop.

Put a similar rain water catch system on our shed roof a couple of years ago but ran a garden hose to the raised bed gardens with soaker hoses in the beds. Put an over flow outlet pipe near the top of the barrel. Works great. Pinch the barbs down on the fish hooks. Makes it easier to release the fish with less damage. Another great video.

I just installed rain barrel for my green house. Mosquitos are what starts messes. I put a screen with tight wire around the circumference. Also the barrel will overflow, so an overflow pipe must go in with a flapper to keep those rascals out/ Valve only opens one-way

My coworker had a similar door setup for their chickens, and the sensor failed, which allowed a predator in; you may want to setup a fail-safe system that alerts you if the doors don't close by a certain time, such that you can manually close them
We have one of our Eufy security cameras on the coop to monitor the door 😊

We have an automatic coop door for our chickens and we love it. Light sensor closes and opens to let them in and out and keep them safe.

One suggestion, I cut the barb off my hooks to reduce any fish damage for catch and release at my pond. Also, if your pond is filled by run off, install aerators.

I am impressed with the chicken coupe. Using as self sufficient as you could, using solar panels for the automatic door opener and using the blue barrel to catch the rain water to water the chickens. Great idea. I love the ideas you guys come up with. I love watching family videos like this. It makes my week. Keep up the good work.
Lovin' the coop! Brings back memories of both sets of grandparents raising chickens. In their roost houses, they had roost poles (saplings) attached horizontally across the angled uprights. As a kid, I loved how the chickens could clamp on those poles and not fall off. Thanks for the reminder!
I also used branches with forks. I could spend forever watching guinea fowl of chooks. Walking from the end of the row, over each other, to get prime spot in the middle. This went on forever until they went to sleep. Sleep being only time you can guarantee catching or doing stuff to them. If they know you are watching and waiting to lock them in. They would wander more. Ha ha!
Have you considered putting a feed door on the other side of the coop with a lift-up door, just like the egg-gathering door? Otherwise, you still have to go in to distribute feed. I love the re-vamped coop!!

To keep your cat off the counters place some strips of painters tape sticky side up. Should take just once of the cat stepping on it to deter them from getting on the counter.
