Damn, I thought I'd be on the fence at $100, but at $200, that's a hard nope, especially considering that for 100 more, you could get an Arcade 1up cabinet. Yeah, it's bigger, but it's also significantly better.
yeah I got a smaller galaxian machine the main difference functionally speaking is that mine doesn't have a built in battery and it was only £15 ($18) and with a bit of rewiring mine can have 9 extra games
They are out of their damn minds asking $200 for these.
Yep. This a no go for me. Arcade 1up all the way.
For only $150 you can make your own arcade cabinet with some wood, joysticks and buttons, a mo and monitor and a raspberry pi to put the games in.
Definitly! Came here to say the same.
200 bucks is pure insanity.
😵 yes, insane 😵 that's the right word
Doesn't Walmart have bigger versions of these for around the same price? Pretty sure they do. Lmao. These that he has are kinda lame. Get the bigger ones!!
K M yes the 1Up Arcades, I just purchased like 4 of them to finish off my game room. They are really nice. I’ll be doing a giveaway soon of them.
They're actually going for about $169.99 on the Geek Store website. Remember, these are for those who want to preserve the art of arcade history by supporting what's essentially a perfect replica of the arcade machine. And it even plays...with a tiny micro-switch controller at that! The price is fair.
@@Ashzulla If you are in any of the mame arcade building groups the quality of the 1up are always looked down on. However you can not get around the fact that they are fully licensed.
$200. The same price as a Nintendo Switch Lite. No thanks! Appreciate the review MJR.
The Switch Lite is a practical, pedestrian product for playing games. Numskull's units are art pieces meant to celebrate the golden age of the arcade and the striking visual tour-de-force that defined it. In other words, the former is a toy, the latter a way to preserve the past.
@@pacario9625 yea but for what ???? U can literally download those games on a toaster. They pretty much are trying to capitalize on your nostalgia. Which is pretty fucking sad considering the games dont take much to run. The most expensive thing is probably the labor to put them together. Yeah 200 bucks for wood and a 30 year old game ??? Yea no..
@@pacario9625 I agree, only a true arcade connoisseur would pay $200 for yet another cheap emulation toy shaped like an arcade.
@@Akira-si2ww Ah, but it's not cheap, but a high-quality homage to the past. Think of it as akin to those expensive statues of video game or anime characters people love to buy. It's no different than that...except it's both playable and historic.
@@karlatorress13 I think you're missing the point--these exist as ways to celebrate the lost art of arcade cabinet aesthetic and design. But alas, a philistine such as yourself wouldn't understand.
Suddenly arcade 1up cabs don't seem so pricey
Right? And they have 4 games at least.
@@Openreality and you can mod them out with a raspberry pi really easily
They were never pricey. The internet just complains all the time.
@@pokeroot2876 I mean some of them I'd say aren't worth the price because of the dial controls on one of them, and not having something to cover the art where your hands shit. I'd say maybe the turtles and marvel ones might be a little much, but they're pretty quality gamesn I would pay it for sure
Public opinion says these guys have priced themselves right out the market.
..but it's okay because they asked MJR to provide some "early feedback"
At least the Neo-Geo mini has a functional analog stick that is not going to cramp or stress the wrist to use and it has 40 games preinstalled to use which is better than the SNK switch cart that comes preinstalled with 20 and free DLC for 15 more. Sorry but 40 games on something that remotely resembles how they were originally played is more worth the price. And it doesn't need to hookup to the TV, it just needs a power source, be it a wall outlet or a car adapter to USB port.
Numskull and Replicate have been selling expensive $100-200 1/6th scale cabs for years now. I don't think they sell very well at all. I Kickstarted Replicade's Centipede and Tempest, and regret Tempest because the rotary dial is garbage. Centipede is OK, but only because I got it for $85. Had I paid the MSRP of $150 I wouldn't have been happy with it.
The price just makes these unwanted imo, they would be great around 50 or so.
Not playable for more than 10 minutes. After that very uncomfortable. My hands cramped up no matter how I positioned them (tried one at a retro used store).
I think the Neo-Geo mini units are the only small arcade units worth playing.
seems more decorative
Small arcades/mini arcades seem only good if they still try to factor in some good size, like it doesn't need to be full on 6 ft, but if i dont plan to move the thing anyway, the smallest they should make them is like at least 3ft tall.
It's important to note that these are meant primarily for display purposes--a tangible way to celebrate the lost art of arcade cabinet design and stylings from thirty years ago. The cabinet is wood, the joystick is a micro-switch, the art is a perfect duplication of the original--these are celebrations of a nigh, dying form. The fact that these are actually playable on top of everything else is just icing on an already tasty cake.
@@pacario9625 oh its defiantly still cool as fuck hahah
I bought both of these games on my Xbox One a few days ago for under five bucks- they are licensed, arcade perfect, and I can play them on my big screen TV. I’m good-
For an additional $195 you can have an LED marquee and quarter sound effects though!!
I love how Metal Jesus thinks I'm going to spend $200 on a friend's birthday present.
I doubt they will sell 10k of these...
Not at $200 a pop. I expect these to get pretty steep markdowns.
Retro Juice Gaming I think you mean...numskulls.
They're all almost sold out, however Galaga will be releasing soon, with an updated pricepoint of $150, with the removal of the certificate and coin. Galaga will not be limited to 10,000, since Pac-Man did so well.
Got a pacman arcade 1up for $199 at walmart so no thanks for these smaller ones
I seen the pacman at Walmart clearenced for 99 bucks. 129 for galaga
I can't imagine having a Track & Field cab like this with the amount of button mashing you have to do on that game. Best learn how to hypertap with the one finger.
$200 gift yeah I don’t think so! Lol
I don’t like *anyone* that much!
@@SumDumGy i do but i wouldn't insult them with a machine this small. i would just save the money and get the full size 1up version.
200$, really?! What a joke.
@Andy w I agree with you these are not for me. However I will say part of that money will be to go towards licensing however I don't know how much per unit.
If it was 50 I would probably consider buying it but at 200????? That’s a pass
Even at $169.00 (the current, stated price), Numskull isn't making a lot of profit on these. These mini cabs (which are actually larger than you might think) are built with high quality materials and are essentially passion projects for the company. At $50.00, well, that will get you one of those cheapie 6'' machines at Wal-Mart.
@Andy w That's fine...once you add (at least) another $1800 to that. Arcade cabs aren't cheap these days, and Numskull's solution is a reasonable one, in both affordability and space requirements.
@@pacario9625 Well said!
I think if you were 50 (I'm 43) your freakin' hands would be cramping up. I've already got arthritis, hell no!
Soon to be the Virtual Boy of Arcade Machines.
I wish I had said that.
I dont get the appeal of these
It's for people with lots of money who like busy decorations.
Basement dwellers are idiots
These units are for those who always admired the exquisite art and talent that went into the original machines. The arcade cab is a dying art form, and purchasing the original machines is too expensive for most, so Numskull is doing the next best thing by bringing these forsaken machines back in miniature form.
"I feel like I'm gonna break this damn thing!" - J from MIB
It weird how someone can hate the ps1 mini but get pumped for this tiny trinket.
It looks like more of that my arcade junk that is out there. 🙄
It's not weird that anyone can hate the PS1 mini, it's garbage
Hey...
Don't get mad at sony for putting out the ps1 mini!
It makes a great dust collector.
"Two hundr-"
Seeya!!!
Looks cool.. but the price point is way to high. Go with the Arcade 1 Up for that much.. Good vid.
rob davis 1 up are also overpriced junk,go with real cabs.
@@jrapocalypse real for me is way too much $$. I bough a Arcade 1 up and added about 900 games to it and It works for me. And yea the retail price for them is also to high but caught it on sale.
@@robdavis4777 I haven't been so lucky yet. I'm still waiting for a sale. I just have to be patient.
Real cabinets are not really an option. For one, spending 1500+ on a single game is not something I want to do. Secondly, space is at a premium, so Arcade1Up would be a better bet for me to mod.
@@jrapocalypse Check out the new star wars arcade 1up. Its actually probably the most spot on version with light up marquee. Very cool looking and even has the same flight yoke controller. Yea they arent built as solid and heavy as the original arcade cabinets, but there are a couple that are pretty cool. I have the 12 in 1 deluxe one and swapped out the cheap 1up spinner for a nice solid more responsive one, and it made a massive difference. $200 for these though are too much. $100 tops!
Not getting any payment for the reviews, but they always get these cool machines to keep. That's kind of a nice payment. ;)
I didn’t keep them.
Well that sucks. Usually they allow you to keep the review units.
he said they gave the machines to him TO TRY.
@Slobodan Lang And...?
I’m happy with my arcade1ups
it comes with a USB cable you say... it has licensed graphics you say... I say imagine if your PS4 played ONE GAME from 40 years ago. No one would think that's a good value at $20 let alone ten times that.
Can’t Wait ! Have all of them on preorder 😍
Looks pointless , too small to play
Ikr. Just ridiculous.
Luckily i dont have his giant fingers
It’s more of a novelty for collectors. Still pretty cool.
They're just targeting collector's who think it would look cool in their collection but other than that, I agree, pointless!
I would buy the Power-Up ones that at least is two-thirds the size of an original arcade unit, imo.
Carpal tunnel inducing
You could buy a used new generation console for that price. Heck the 1up cabinets are that price and bigger.
These are actual size cabinets its just Metal Jesus is so dang tall!
You’re almost to 696,969 subscribers. Don’t forget to take a photo.
If they didn’t quarter the size of the controls as well it would be better
That's very cool. Especially as its a size that I could actually find room for in my game room.
$200 is pricey although I bet they measured the market demand for something like this and found limited quantities at a higher price was less of a risk.
Pretty cool to look at, but not ergonomical at all. Your hands looked like they were about to break something there.
Tried one at a local used retro store. You're absolutely correct.
It's primarily a display piece--a perfect replica of a dying art form. A piece of history, if you will. The fact it plays at all is almost irrelevant. If all you want is comfort then, yeah, this unit isn't for you.
@@pacario9625 well, if the company wanted to make something to display and not to play, they should have gone all the way in that direction. Something with miniature coins to insert, I dont know. Instead, it's a piece of hardware that does neither very well and asks a lot of money in return.
@@fcrfortes I disagree--the fact that it plays with the actual arcade ROM makes it the perfect replica in every way--it sort of clinches the deal, so to speak, and allows passerbys to fully experience the greatness of those old games. But this is not something you will play for hours. There are better options for that.
These cabinets make mjr look like a giant
I'll never get over that goofy, classic Pac-Man art! Classic.
Id rather use my 200 dollars on a Switch Lite with human size controls.
or they could've made it into like a coinbank so one can really save any loose change particularly quarters which would start /continue games.
Love your videos
Omg! Love it!
Great video 😉
The climb up the Stairway to Seven... hundred thousand subscribers continues!
I actually *really* like these but the price... ouch.
It's truly cool--I have the Pac-Man one. If you view it as a limited edition art piece and celebration of a lost facet of time, the price doesn't seem so bad. Indeed, these units are impressively built and look great on any shelf or tabletop. I can't wait to pair my Pac-Man with his better half!
too small and that wouldn't be a problem if the price was at a reasonable price. This looks like a 50$ tops price item in my opinion
Neat,but too small for me
I guess it looks kinda cool as a collector's item, but definitely not something I could play seriously. Looks really uncomfortable for your hands and hard to watch the screen while playing.
Watching you play that was like a retro-arcade version of jack-in-the-beanstalk.
Nah, unless it's a full size cabinet, i'll just play it on my phone.
200?? insane.
First of all, great video as usual. Second, I've seen reviews on these types of smaller upright arcade games before, but no one mentions if there is some sort of equivalent to the set of DIP switches that are on the back of every arcade game. They control things such as how many guys you start the game with, what score you have to achieve to get awarded a free guy, etc. Do these smaller versions have something equivalent or are you just stuck with the settings out of the box?
Galaga is one of my favorite games of all time, I wouldn't pay more than 50$, I've got a modded Arcade1up cab and I'm more than happy with that
ive just never understood the appeal of these things. Really too small to actually play with any sort of seriousness.Just my take on them..BUT glad to see retro will never die.
I can see the appeal from people heavily into retro gaming collecting and especially arcade stuff. The design is pretty cool and does not take up a lot of space, but yeah they're not super practical. If they were cheaper than the market would be a *lot* bigger I think.
Great video as always man! I wish they were a little bigger, i'm 6'3'' so it'd be awkward
How do you fit the quarters in those slots?
If it was double the size I might be interested, but what am I going to do with this thing apart from putting it on display.
What is this? An arcade cabinet for ANTS?!?!
I appreciate the video review. For $300 I could get the Arcade 1 Up version with a cabinet / bigger screen and more comfortable playing feel. It felt great when I was at E3 this year.
Just last night at my local retro drive-in theatre I played Galaga and Pacman on a split console. the same cabinet would play either Galaga or PAC man, but it was an OLD cabinet, not a remake
when you could have a raspberry pi based version with lots of different games on it, for about the same price, it's not worth the cost.
Bruh!? Your fingers alone covers up the whole damn thing! 😅😂😅 this $20-$30 novelty is being sold for $200 WTF!!!!
You'd have to be taking some pretty powerful drugs (or just be plain stupid) to get conned into paying $200 for this.
If these were going for $20-30 I would see them sell out very quickly. That would be an awesome price for something like that imo.
@@huldu As lovely as that'd be, the concept of these is that they're premium quality collector's pieces - they're made of real wood and metal materials, and are very high quality pieces. We pay vastly more than that to make each unit, so we're actually already not making too much profit at the $169.99 price point haha! :D
We're pretty proud to say it's the most authentic miniature replica on the market though!
@@NumskullDesigns
I was thinking during the video that these look very well made. I'm not even going to take mine out of the box.
@@NumskullDesigns Doesn't matter. Overpriced is overpriced, regardless of quality.
I picked up my Mrs Pac-Man and Galaga full size cabinets for 150 and 200 so this is an insane price. I’ll pass.
Would be awesome if they release an Mortal Kombat Version :D
Don't own these mini cabinets i have seen and review one and it's very high quality.
Thanks for showing :D
It'd be cool if they could also accept quarters adding a piggy bank aspect to them.
Price needs to come down a bit otherwise just get one of the arcade 1up machines where you get multiple games in one unit
Even at a lower price I'd prefer the One Up. I can sit on a short stool and enjoy the One Up for extended periods of playtime.
I have 2 arcade1up and 1 on preorder but then that's it ill need to get some miniatures because space
I'll stick with my Out Run cabinet WinXP emulator.
Nice review, these are cool. "No ghosting" on Pac-Man - haha!
So is the Pacman a 4 way gate on the joystick? I see they did Galaga with the 2 way joystick gate.
yes pac man is a 4 way.
I wonder if it's the licensing cost or just an inefficient manufacturing process that's causing these to be so much for what they are. $200 is definitely a bit much for something like this.
Agree its way to much when you can get the mini console way cheaper
Not a bit too much , a LOT too much!! Worthless for anything but sitting on the shelf. Regardless of what anybody says these are very uncomfortable to play after about 10 minutes.
Especially considering the 1-up machines cost less than that and are 3/4 the size of traditional machines. Mind you, the 1-up machines are cheaply built but even still, I would expect these to cost 75-100 dollars at most.
They are at most 80 to produce.
Love the back lit marquee and just overall appearance of them. My main concern is finding a table at the right height to comfortably play one. I wonder if it's possible to hack them to add games.
In my opinion, there is no way to comfortably play these for extended periods.
Metal Jesus U ROCK!!! God Speed and Game On!
Ooooh some nice cabs! I'd love a NBA Jam one for my game room!
The Arcade1up machine is only 100 more and way bigger
I got pacman the other day it was a dud I had to return it because the joystick wasnt responding to right input all the time
How does it compare to the New Wave Toys Cabinets? Better quality? Controls? Size? I have a Tempest coming to me in the next few days.
Surprised you didn't do any visual size comparisons for us. I've been getting the Replicade releases of Centipede and Tempest due to their unique controls and they're pretty great but they're smaller than these. I think 1/6th. Plays fine though and Tempest in particular looks great.
Why this over 1up arcade?
hey metal jesus i live near seattle and was wondering if you could recommend any game stores that may have a good amount of ps1 games?
Considering you can get these games for the Nintendo switch and then hook them up to your tv in HD or you could build an arcade cabinet and run a Picade i don’t see the point. I doubt the built in battery is replaceable either
Would be cool if you could add more games to it. I have a few of these mini cabinets. They're cool, but TBO they don't do much other than sit on my shelf because they look cool. They are a bit challenging to play with their small controls.
Really cool scaling, obviously not for prolonged play, but for displaying and being eye catching. Pricey, but what collectable isn't.
this reminds me of the popeye tabletop arcade by nintendo in the 1980s. i loved that game so much
MJR are you at all excited about the re-releases of Baldur’s Gate 1&2, Planescape Torment, Icewind Dale, and Neverwinter Nights on console?
Track and field would be awesome for those bigger units they sell at Walmart .
The only time you can trust a content creators opinions on a product is when they paid for it themselves. If it's a sponsored video then obviously it's simply an ad at that point. In this case the item was given for free but no sponsorship but I still don't trust it because the expectation is for a good review. Otherwise that company will no longer send you review items for free. TL:DR I only trust reviews for items people bought themselves.
I get paid from ad revenue only. My only motivation is making good quality videos people want to watch. Whether you decide to buy this or not is completely up to you.
I typically give them away. The Galaga machine goes to John Hancock for review and the Pac-Man goes to my buddy Troy.
Did I see correctly? Does MJR really have a Box of that unreleased Babylon 5 Game on his shelf???
Double the price I'd be willing to pay. Plus, I'd like to have heard a little bit more about the build quality on these.
The build quality is good. Its real wood and not that plastic crap arcade 1 up has. I see people complain about the arcade stick and buttons being small. I don't have the galaga one but I can promise you I can use the pacman joystick just fine and I have big fingers. The galaga machine they say will come with dip switches and if that means a rapid fire option the fire button on the galaga machine should have no issues at all.
@@richardcarpenter24 I own both the Numskull cabinet and the 1Up and the Numskull is definitely a higher quality and easier to play build than the 1Up. That's not to say that I don't love the 1Up, but btween the two, the Numskull is definitely my favorite pick. Of course you could always just build one, (I built a 1/2 scale cab out of metal) but even custom built ones have issues. It's personal preference, really.
I’d buy it for the cave shooter in a sweet Japanese candy cab!!
Kick back received
The detail on these!
The controller looks so small compared to your hand but if you think it is fine then that's cool. I will say though that it would be nice if there were more than just 1 game per cabinet. Plenty of variations on Galaga and Pacman.
Definitely considering TMNT arcade 1up but would rather have wrestling one.
Rather get the 1/2 size units at Walmart for $300. Way easier to play on and actually seem more like the real thing.
I got the SF for $250 at Walmart, followed a YT video on how to mod it with a raspberry pi, it's like the coolest thing ever - I even swapped out the buttons and stick for better ones, totally worth the money
Oh man, such an awesome looking arcade machines and not too big so i could even get one. Love them both!
The main question that makes it worth the money. Does it save high scores. The only mini unit I see worth buying is the Replicade ones since they save high scores. This should be a standard feature
When I was a kid back in the 80's, those Galaga machines were the ones that really grabbed me. No matter what, I could go to the biggest arcade there is, I would absolutely have to play Galaga. At least one game. Only now in hindsight do I realize the effect of that game's appeal on me. Man, I want one of these!
I don't know, I'm looking at your hands and I'm thinking that's just too damn small, it's kind of crazy. I know you said these are probably perfect for some peoples' game rooms but I'm thinking a full sized joystick and arcade buttons just for the mere performance in playing. I give you props for trying it out. And as small as the screen looks, the little sprites in there, I'd probably get mad at it after a while and throw it across the room, lol.
I adore my Numskull Pac-Man and Galaxian. However, the Pac-Man joystick is broken (up and right movement). The joystick is not durable. It would be great if they have USB port in the back for an external joystick. I wish they have that option in future cabinets.
I would buy Track and Filed, would love a Ring king version as well.
And kung fu master and Karate Champ twin stick version, oh god , set myself off again.
You have to send them back or are they yours to keep?
I gave mine to a friend.
