Just got round to putting a pair of Fender Cunife in my Deluxe, massive difference, the bridge is probably the best electric guitar sound I have ever heard, the neck although good could do with having a tighter bottom end, wouldn't mind trying a Lollar Regal low wind
I have a MIM Thinline 72 reissue, I love the pups on it. I was debating upgrading to the CuNiFe. Your demo makes it clear that for the money, it's not really worth it unless I get extra money. Then again, if I had enough extra cash, I would go for the same model in the MIA line. Until I win the lottery m, I'm sticking with the MIM for now. Thanks.
This was just the comparison I wanted... almost. It would have been easier to navigate your video with timestamps for easy comparison. You saved me money: thanks.
@@Biovoguitar The MIM's just sound like a low-wind HB. WR are "scoopier." What I call "smokey tone". But I think it's down to magnetic poles vs a bar magnet, rather than much else. Different focus of the field.
The cunife p/u's really shine with some dirt on them. I have the cunife/ cobalt in my Squire Jazzmaster. It was a big improvement over the stock p/u's. The cunife's have very high mids which is great in a band mix
I’ve been considering changing the neck pick-up in my MIM deluxe but although it can be a bit dark and muffled sometimes with the right setup it just has a real mojo that it really inspiring and compliments the single coil tele bridge pickup mine has. I’m liking the cunife pickups in demos and having tried a CS tele in a shop but I think I’m gonna have to keep MIM stock and buy another deluxe and put the new pickups in. Can’t stop loving my MIM for what it does.
Great job man, very useful. As many others, I was planning to put cunife on my mex deluxe 72. I listened with pro headphones...and I can only agree with you. Cunife are maybe just "slightly clearer, slightly less muddier, slightly better"... but almost fucking identical to the mim. And that minimal difference would be completely lost in the mix, and no way enough to justify such price difference. But I read too many pathetic comments saying that "cunife are far better", "MIM sound terrible compared to cunife" ( 😂😂 ) and so on. Really PATHETIC, no other words for those who alter reality that way. I found another pro comparison between all kind of wide range humbuckers, including MIM and cunife... same results. Truth is that with mim wide range, even if is different in structure and materials, they did a very good job making it almost identical to the expensive father. Also I would like to add that I applied 1 mega pots to the mim wr and they get MUCH clearer than with stock 250k or even 500k. So I would be happy if cunife ones were far better, no problem to spend that money.. but simply it's not like that, it's not real. Cheers
Good review. Preferred the originals myself. Found the cunife somewhat harsh for my taste. (The mim wide range versions used in this model of the Deluxe did improve over the years from the first ones used in WR reissues, according to what I have read, and perhaps by 2014 that was the case.). Of course, whatever your own ears tell you is correct for you and your style. -Highly recommend the Porter wide range, btw, which have their own take on the WR idea.
Great comparison video. Do you notice any difference in the Fender logo on the pickups - CuNiFe versus MIM. Specifically the R registration mark. I bought a pair of the Cunife and had them installed. Now I notice that the bridge’s Fender logo has a huge R, while the neck has a much smaller R. I’m wondering if Fender changed the embossing after launching the new CuNiFes and I just got one that was older stock and one that was newer stock, or exactly what is going on with that R registration dot. Does anyone have any idea? The pickups sound great, but I’m just trying to understand the difference.
Great comparison! Does anyone know where to find instructions on how to set the MIM widerange pickups up? Height from strings etc. Mine sounds sooo muddy Cheers!
for years on any pickup with bolts or screws I’ve adjusted them per string to match volumes pinning both the overall bass and treble sides completely down but pickups without this adjustment are rigid though I’ve gotten by tilting them to balance the overall tone so like if too muddy the treble side would be closer to the strings
CuNiFe provides more harmonic contents, very revealing. MIM were not bad though. I have the exact guitar, stock PU, and I prefer it over my Tele American Deluxe Thinline, except clean tones.
Kind of what I expected. The CuNiFe's sounded a bit more open/airy/articulate, but the MIMs held their own. I have a Squier CV '72 Thinline with the MIM's and I really like them.
I actually had a mexican telecaster thinline with the original mexican widerange and they sounded a little bit more airy compared to the solid deluxe from the video, but did not had it anymore by the time of the video. But the CuNIFe are more open for sure.
I modded a Fender American Pro 2 Tele about 3 years ago with two Cunife pups with 1mg pot and I couldn’t be happier. I have other Custom Shop level guitars but I play this Tele more than any of my other guitars. The MIM pups are nice too I just prefer the Cunife pups.
@@Biovoguitar I think the originals came 1 mg pots so there was that plus I watched some UA-cam videos with people who had modded with those pick ups, and I preferred the ones from people who used 1 mg pots.
I think that the cunife suits people who like that sort of tone. It's clear sounding. I'm just wondering if you can use the tone knobs to reduce the treble with the cunife to make them sound a little warmer like the MIM? Is it possible? So that its inbetween a cunife and mim.
I would definitely think so! I have the MIM and the tone control is very good, you can hear it effecting the tone all the way from 1-10, so if the newer cunife telecaster's are similar, even just dialing tone back to 8 would probably get it to be about the same as the MIM. All that being said I have come to love the low output warm sound of the MIM, I would only replace it with a Lollar Regal, it retains a lot of warmth while being a little more clear, but they are expensive.
I own a squier CV tele custom. The factory pickup I just found to be extremely muddy and dull, couldn't adjust my way out of it. Then I got hold of a used Creamery WR and replaced the original. I can definitely hear that the quality of the Creamery pickup is better than the origianl squier one, but still very dark and muddy. I had to use an extreme amount of treble to clear it up that the high strings was way too bright. And then due to my guitar has a single coil bridge that one is becoming even more trebly, way out of how it should sound. Just dont like the muddiness. Its so bad that Im in doubt whether the pickup is defective, but the output dont seem to be low, by ear at least. Yours sound much brighter and cleaner. Now I wonder if I should invest in a 2020 Fender CuNiFe, but its expensive and I worry I will end with similar results. Need to pull the covers off to tell which are just standard humbuckers inside. Fender pulled a swifty by not using cunife and just a lot of wax around smaller humbucker bobbins.

Finally someone who reviews the MiM to the CuNiFe!! Most people are only reviewing the vintage CuNiFe to the 2020 CuNiFe. Amazing review!! 🎸 I like the sound but I don’t think It’s too big of a difference to justify $249 per pickup on my 72’ Thinline Reissue. I wish Fender can offer an upgrade for the people who already have the “Wider Range Humbuckers” but want the CuNiFe
I thought the same, but in the end I installed CuNiFe pickups in my Thinline (with 1meg pots) and the difference is night and day. They are very bright and punchy, besides tone difference I think the biggest one is the dynamic responce, cunifes are way more dynamic. Brighter than my sensors also but with fuller bass and mids.
Those who are claiming to hear a huge difference are deluding themselves. There is a VERY slight tone/EQ shift between them, but neither is clearly superior.
There is a huge difference. I don't own either one, but I know what I hear. If I were shopping for WR s, I'd compare several brands. The difference would only become, more apparent in a mix/live setting with CuNiFes cutting through with greater detail.
IMHO the CuNiFe Widerange pickups win by a landslide over the MIM Widerange pickups. The disparity in tone and character is actually quite startling TBH. Thanks for posting, I needed to hear this comparison.
amazing comparasion! i wanted to sell my MIM and buy the new american one with Cunife, after watching this video i think ill just do the upgrade of my MIM with a Cunife pair. The MIM hunbuckers sound terrible in comparation with the Cunife.
Neither sounds like the original. The CuNiFe has a bit more body and sparkle, but the MIM sounds just fine. Better than. It's a really nice, clear, bright, open sound. Maybe a little low on output, but I wouldn't kick the MIMs out of bed.
OK, let's get real: The CuNiFe pups are not better or worse than the originals. They have a slightly brighter, harsher, more percussive sound. It's purely a matter of personal taste. I actually prefer the more mellow sounding stock pickups.

Magnified poles with ceramic bar.
Those who are claiming to hear a huge difference are deluding themselves. There is a VERY slight tone/EQ shift between them, but neither is clearly superior.
I mean, there is a difference for sure, but I don´t think is a gigantic one, for the price difference at least
WoW what a huge difference ! MIM is a Mudfest, whereas theese Cunife’s actually have a wideranging tone. Gret comparison
I´m glad it helped, big difference both in sound and price.
Not enough difference to warrant the cost.
Thank you!
amazing comparasion! i wanted to sell my MIM and buy the new american one with Cunife, after watching this video i think ill just do the upgrade of my MIM with a Cunife pair. The MIM hunbuckers sound terrible in comparation with the Cunife.
The MIM pickups are not so bad!
Neither sounds like the original. The CuNiFe has a bit more body and sparkle, but the MIM sounds just fine. Better than. It's a really nice, clear, bright, open sound. Maybe a little low on output, but I wouldn't kick the MIMs out of bed.
Superb.✌😎✌👍🎸🎸
I´m glad it helped
OK, let's get real:
The CuNiFe pups are not better or worse than the originals. They have a slightly brighter, harsher, more percussive sound.
It's purely a matter of personal taste.
I actually prefer the more mellow sounding stock pickups.
totally agree, both are great, but I actually ended replacing them with seymour duncan phat cat and could not be happier.
Phat cat? How did it manage the different dimensions and screw position on the pickguard between them and wide range??

Personally didn't hear a difference. They did a good job with the fake ones!
I think the MIM are a little good bit modier than the CuNiFe, but for the price difference is not worth it for me.
