This song It is also known as "Interlude”. Gillespie called the tune "Interlude" and said "some genius decided to call it 'Night in Tunisia'". He said the tune was composed at the piano at Kelly's Stables in New York.
Interlude. Twelve bar sequence. The complex bass line in the "A section" is notable for avoiding the standard walking bass pattern of straight quarter notes, and the use of oscillating half-step-up/half-step-down chord changes (using the Sub V) gives the song a unique, mysterious feeling. The B section is notable for having an unresolved minor II-V, since the chord progression of the B section is taken from the B section of the standard "Alone Together, " causing the V chord to lead back into the Sub V of the A section. Like many of Gillespie's tunes, it features a short written introduction and a brief interlude that occurs between solo sections - in this case, a twelve-bar sequence leading into a four-bar break for the next soloist.
Lyrics:
The moon is the same moon above you
A glow in its cool evening light
The stars are aglow in Tunisia
Never does it shine so bright
The cares of the days seem to vanish
The ending of day brings release
Each wonderful night in Tunisia
Where the nights are filled with peace.
The stars are aglow in heavens
But only the wise understand
That shining tonight in Tunisia
They guide you through descent sand
And words fail to tell a tale exoticto be taid
Each night's a deeper night in a worldages old
The cares of the world seem to vanish
The ending of day brings release
Each wonderful night in Tunisia
Where the nights are filled with peace.
Was an honor to perform with Jon Faddis, trumpet teacher and mentor!
2:34 I just love it when a trumpet player can have such a bright and big sound and then just switch to a super soft and mellow sound
Jon and his name is “Jon” as well! :)
That was cool
I enjoy that
Jon Faddis... the only who inherit the electrifying gift of Dizzy.
My dudes, that is the legendary Jon Faddis on the trumpet...!
This got recommended for me and i am not mad at all
Latin jazz is an unlimited emotional experience. God bless all of them. The mambo is back !
Magnificent interpretation of the Dizzy Gillespie classic. The trumpet player is killing it, and all the other players are boss!
A quick history of this song: “A Night in Tunisia” is one of the most famous jazz standards, composed in 1942 by Dizzy Gillespie.
In the beginning, there was no mention at all of Tunisia in this song. It was named “Interlude », and its lyrics were completely different... But why Tunisia?
During World War II, the American army fought the German army in North Africa, particularly on Tunisia’s soil. Several thousands of American soldiers died there, their remains now resting in the American cemetery of Carthage. The Second World War represented a crucial moment in the African-Americans empowering movement. Black people fought alongside White people and were welcomed as heroes by liberated populations. But in the United States, they were still subject to segregation and did not receive the same honors at the end of the war. Thus, the years that followed were years of uprisings which lead to the Civil Rights Movement.
The bebop style, introduced during this period by Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and others, pictured that rebellious spirit perfectly. This innovative style turned its back on big bands’ too conventional and consensual jazz. It developed complex harmonies on a rhythm way faster, more nervous and syncopated, taking inspiration from African rhythms.
“A night in Tunisia” belongs to that movement: its rhythm is Afro-Cuban, its harmonies and its melody have something unsettling and exotic which can evoke Orient… or Tunisia. The same Tunisia which represented, during the war, the arrival on the African ground, the continent of origin of Black Americans.
Thus, this Tunisia where “the moon is the same moon above you […] Never does it shine so bright”, where stars “guide you through the desert sand” and where “the nights are filled with peace” was a beautiful symbol of return to the roots, peace, and hope for African-Americans
Thank you for the great account of the origin; even more for the rich history of all performers who found refuge in Europe when their own homeland kept them from belonging to their birthplace.
I don't mean to be rude or even racist but the majority of Tunisians are not black I'm myself Tunisian and I'm not black so when u say that the africo-americans are originally from Tunisia is completely false
@@supportersofcheguevaraandc5551 He never said african americans were from Tunisia, he said Tunisia represented landfall on the continent of Africa, which is the origin of Black Americans.

Fantastic comment---History, culture, music and innovation of the Black and Latin interplay. It's all represented in your post. Thanks("Shukran" as they say in Arabic).
Can't stop listening this set... Maybe one of the best nights in Tunisia ever played. Dizz should be proud... No doubt!
Mr. Gove's great arrangement...!!
I love this group plays A Night in Tunisia. I love Mambo music.
Pacific Mambo Orchestra; That band is 'SMOKIN'!!!!!!!!! YES; 'FUMANDO'!!!!!! I hope to hear the orchestra live as soon as they hit the Big Apple. The arrangement was well done and Jon Faddis hit those golden high notes in the spirit of the great Dizzy Gillespie. The percussionists were definitely 'on point' and the entire woodwind and brass sections were screaming; 'lets swing this'!!! A job that was definitely, 'well done'!!
A NIGHT IN TUNISIA: COMPOSED BY THE INDELIBLE

All yoy guys are unbelievable!!!!... The most evolved version I've heard of that magic theme.... And the best background for the Dizzy's heritage with Mr. Faddis... Muy grande!!!
Salutes to you mindi!
One of the best version I've ever heard of Gillespies theme. The PMO's sound is like a thunder and Mr. Faddis ... well he's Dizzy's son. So great!. Mr. Birks would be proud!.
Lots of old friends from my years in the Bay Area in the band. Great playing and great chart. Also hello to Jon. Let's go get some Mexican food.
Authentic?
Dafnis is one of a few drummers who can play with a Latin percussion section and enhance the music without covering up the parts of the percussionists.
I love how near the end it goes to the original Night in Tunisia (5:35).
Now that is music. Mind sufficiently blown.
I still need to listen to this theme at least once at week... overnatural!.
Killer!!! Awesome arrangement!
NICE, Jon Faddis Brilliant
He is the best!
Guys, Dizzy would be doing a standing ovation to theses boys! Amazing performance!
Got to say, this is a great arrangement of one of my favorite Jazz tunes. Just enough novelty to give it its own personality while still paying homage to the original. Love Jon Faddis.
