- A journey down Crested Butte's expert Rambo run, the steepest tree-defined ski trail in North America. This run is extremely technical and should only be attempted by tenured experts.
Crested Butte is a remote ski resort in southwest Colorado. This video was filmed across in early March 2021; conditions were typical for the time of year.

I did this run last March and it was definitely the most challenging I’ve done, mostly due to those trees and rocks. The steepness was insane though in person.
I did this years ago on a snowboard. It took me 25 minutes to get down it, my legs were on fire and I could barely breath. My group went back to the condo and it was the last day so I really wanted to do it. I went there and I was the only one there which made it scarier in case something happened. I started down it and within 15 seconds I knew it was a mistake. Worst part was knowing there wasn’t anyone around and that I had no option but to go down it. It was insane. It wasn’t snowboarding, it was survival.
No stopping when you get in the send zone.
As a skier this looks DOABLE, but I can’t imagine how u were able to get down that on a board while in control. Ur a legend for it, hell you’d have my respect just for walking down that monster

These turns with a snowboard must be insanely difficult.
I've been snowboarding for like 12 years and there's no way I could make it down this on a board while making turns lol only way down for me is to sit or plow the whole way I can't imagine the stress of that
Thank you for having the presence to look up at the run and gift perspective from the bottom. I see so many great ski videos where they failed to do that. Wonderful perspective, which captures the stiffness, far better than the actual moment of going down.

Yep. On a deep pow day, it is sooo much fun, since you can lean back into the snow, and it doesnt feel as steep, and most of the trees are covered, along with the rocks!
Home turf. We just bootpacked the entire run by sidestepping on skis, twice. Part of the terrain prep CBMR does to keep all of you safe. Enjoy. Those trees will be for sale next christmas!

The best part is that due to the go pro it’s not even as steep as it actually is in appearance. Honestly I probably would have had a panic attack if I had to go down that thing. Props to you for braving it.
Exactly. This video probably makes it look like nothing compared to actually standing on top of it. I've never been to Crested Butte(at least not in the winter), and I'm not a good enough skier to even contemplate attempting this(especially because 95% of the time I ride, and I sure as hell am not going down this thing on a snowboard, even though I have a lot more experience on that than skis), but to me, on camera, this doesn't look as bad as some of the steeper double diamonds. But I'm sure it's far, far steeper than anything I've done, or would do. Maybe it's just my phone that makes it look not as steep(and like you said, the GoPro), but you do get glimpses of how steep it truly is.
Sucks about the trees/stumps/rocks though. Imagine falling and tumbling down that thing with jagged tree branches and rocks sticking out at you? No freaking thanks.
Looks like a lot of fun, especially with good snow. I would assume you have to hit it early in the morning on a powder day as I am sure it gets tracked out fast. Thanks

Looks easier off to the sides in the trees. This reminds me of the hidden chutes at Silver Mt. Idaho.
Sort of reminds me of some of the crazy south side stuff at Big Sky, like Castro’s or To Hell You Ride. Mix a 50+ degree pitch with the hazards. Looks fun.

Well it is not 55 degrees, maybe if measuring the back if a bump but not consistent pitch. 45 degrees looks more right.

It's steep, but the only challenge I find is avoiding rocks when coverage isn't good (which is much of the time).
It's so much easier to ski steep terrain in CA where it actually snows, and the snow has a texture that sticks to steeps so that a single snowboarder can sideslip the entire seasons snow away in one run.

Since then I moved to Utah and Honeycomb gate out Solitude dwarfs pretty much anythin outside of Jackson as far as inbounds stuff is concerned.
I worked at the resort for 16 years and use to take easy out and pass Rambo by on my lunch hour double black diamond run.
One of the most challenging runs I've done in my life. I did it the next day again and fared only a bit better.
Reminded me when I first tried to ski it. On a 180 degree back jump turn, my skis caught one of those little trees and tumbling I went. Was pissed, skied it the next day ok.
My buddy would take the woods on the left and i would take the right, we meet at the bottom and get treated to a nice powdery run out because not many others were ripping that area. Did this about five or so times over the course of four days plus a couple runs straight down the cut, which was definitely more gnarly than the woods next to it with the same steepness. I had so much fun on this run but i also live on the ice Coast. I found freddo's cliff to be much, much more scarier than rambo.

Have been skiing 50 degree+ up here in BC at Revy, Banff, etc for the last few weeks, but at least there's coverage in the glades! I like my skis too much to ever drop something as sketch as that.

I grew up skiing at crested butte but never skied rambo as a kid. Now I ski RTS at Willamette Pass which is almost as steep.
Wait what. Something on tiny little Willamette is steeper than hoodoo or I'm on bachelor which can struggle for pitch but Willamette seems tiny
@@ketchcoreyvideos Yes. WP is steeper than both Hoodoo and Bachelor for sure I've skied the steepest stuff at each resort, the face at Hoodoo, Pincales/Cirque at Bachelor, and RTS at WP).
I have witnessed these runs as well, and can attest to Willamet... I miss that place, do they still let you ski for an hour for $8/hr?
@@saascends no more skiing by the hour but they do have aggressive dynamic lift ticket pricing because down in Capital partners is acquiring them and so you can find a daily lift ticket for 19 bucks midweek if you plan it out in advance.
Reminds me of Mount Baldy Southern California Steep and lots of obstacles😮 at the end of the video when he turned around and showed the Run it looks like skiers left right next to the trees had the least amount of obstacles and was semi smooth

This is one of those runs you piss and pray going down, turn back, study a line and attempt that line the second time.

Slow and easy ...don't be afraid to STOP at any time and assess the situation directly in front of you... I personally would go on the cat track at the end of the run FIRST before I even took the run and check everything out then take the chairlift back up the mountain then go down it

My dad tried tobogganing down a slope like that with a few other people on it years ago and he was in the front and they hit a tree near the bottom and he broke both legs and did some damage to his body and arms. They called that place Suicide Hill. Many years later when I was in my 20's I went up that hill with my friend and his new Toyota Landcruiser... all we could see was sky on the way up... just barely made it when we got to the top... it nearly rolled over backwards down the hill. We never tried it again. I think we lost about 10 years off our lifespan from that.

Going down it I was more worried about the debris rather than the steepness. The leg muscles were definitely burning after that run though 😂. Have an older pair of skis for this you don’t mind getting chewed up.

Rocks look like the biggest challenge. There's a lot of runs that start at 48+ degs, but for only say 20-50ft.
Author just walked the slope, if he chose a good line (there's were several in the video and he clearly randomly chose lines) could have skied 2/3 without stopping....of course stamina willing! What a slope!

Having done them all, Defiance Ridge at Snowbird, the Spiny Chutes at Alta and the Mushroom chutes at Jackson are all steeper. And I'm not just saying this, I have geology to back me up. Crested Butte is a magma extruded mountain and has been eroding over the millennia by water. Alta, Snowbird and Jackson were all glacial cut mountain. As we all remember in middle school geology, water eroded valley/mountains are V shaped. Glacial eroded mountain and valleys are U shaped making them steep towards their upper reaches.

glad you said tree cut run I live in crested butte and it gets really annoying pointing to a much much steeper run like 500ft away and saying "dude that ones obviously steeper" its just the steepest run that has all the trees cut off of it.

i skied it 15 yrs ago and fell at the top and a girl asked me "do u know where u r" sure and skied down no problemo. it's really averages 45 degrees some of backside of the bumps may hit 55 degrees.

It looked like it would be mandatory air from the line of sight, but ended up being significantly less precipitous than it seemed.

Ski Colorado! They have the best snow & the best terrain.
I grew up in CO but CA (Mammoth, Tahoe) kicks it's ass in terms of snowfall and coverage on steep terrain. Stuff that would almost never be open in CO is almost never closed in CA.
One big dump at Mammoth could burry all those trees until May

People did bomb RTS at Willamette Pass when it hosted the speed skiing championships in 1991.
Someone reached 117MPH on it.

And that's Rambo with a ton of snow. Often there is way more trees, everywhere, and not nearly so much open snow.

No 😊 its like some Swedish resorts claiming close to 50 degrees. They measure it over a few meters, not average gradient over a longer distance. Guests like brag to friends that they did something steep so no incentive for anyone to measure honest.
It is very steep for a marked run though.

The crazy thing is, this camera does not do this trail justice at all. Granted, I've never been on this particular trail, but I've stood over some very steep runs, and they can look almost impossibly steep when you're standing above them. You get glimpses of how steep it is, such as when you see the bottom from about halfway through, or when he turns back and looks up the hill, but as anyone who skis/rides knows, as steep as a trail looks from the bottom, is nothing compared to what it looks like when you're at the top.
Respect to you sir. Sucks about the trees/branches/rocks/stumps, etc. though. When I was about 15, my friends and I drove up to Stratton, VT, and being southern/mid VT, it's not exactly like skiing out west(my cousins, who grew up in CO and had a time share or condo or something in Breckinridge(where my sister lives now) used to joke around about it all the time. I'd always call them spoiled, because we'd be skiing in damn near perfect conditions(at least for around here), and they constantly be complaining about ice. Half the time I didn't even know what the he'll they were talking about. Then I went out west over Christmas break one year, and I understood it(especially because Breckinridge is way up there, like nearly 14,000ft, above the treeline in some cases.))
Early or late in the season here like half the trails aren't open due to lack of snow, and those that are often icy as hell. I was flying along, two of my friends were skiing and the rest of us were boarding, and they go into the glades, linking the main trail, we follow, and on my way out of the glades back towards the "normal" trail there was a bit of a jump. So I built up some speed, and as soon as I'm about to hit the jump I see something sticking out from the left side of the jump/bump, I thought it was a branch or something, and tried to avoid it, but do me going so fast, and there being trees everywhere(trees not really being conducive to snowboarding, especially at my level of experience back then), I ended up riding right over it while putting pressure onto it from trying to stear away from it, and it jacked up my board like I didn't even know was possible(and I had just got it for my birthday at the end of August, having paid half of it myself because I wanted a really good board that was just right for me as we were getting more serious into the park, rails, even the halfpipe at that point.)
Not only did I have a super deep gouge running from right in front of my left toe to about 5 or 6 inches behind my right heal(I ride regular), but right at the end of that line, there was a big, nasty, deep, probably 1.5x1.5 inch "wound" up against the edge/blade. It was like someone took a big bouncy ball, and just tor a piece off. I was sooooo pissed(as I'm sure you can tell, I'm still quite bitter about it. Lol.)
That's not a ski run, that's a Christmas tree farm.
I love crested butte, by far my favorite mountain. But by god… just looking at Rambo from the bottom is too much…
I know it's steep....but it would have been great with insta360 cam...having a profile view with horizon lock would really showcase how steep the run actually is.
i'm quite ignorant about settings, but the few 360-cams I've watched from east coast runs that I'm familiar with make the runs appear steeper than I know them to be. not sure what horizon lock does to that or anything though. like i said, ignorant about cam setup.
